How so very… dramatic:
Edwards Staff Had Affair ‘Doomsday’ Strategy
…Up until December of 2007, most on Edwards’ staff didn’t believe rumors about the affair.
But by late December, early January of last year, several people in his inner circle began to think the rumors were true.
Several of them had gotten together and devised a “doomsday” strategy of sorts.
Basically, if it looked like Edwards was going to win the Democratic Party nomination, they were going to sabotage his campaign, several former Edwards’ staffers have told me.
See also The Daily Beast. I don’t know what’s funnier: that they had a ‘doomsday strategy’, or that there was actually anybody left by January 2008 that honestly thought that Edwards had a shot at winning the Democratic nomination. Besides, why go through anything convoluted? If they really wanted to torpedo their candidate thoroughly, all they had to do was rehire Amanda Marcotte.

IMO, the "Edwards Affair" provided the quintessential example of media bias

The song that never ends.
itrytobenice (Diary) Sunday, May 10th at 11:58PM EST (link)It still goes on. The media is obsessed with the breakup of Levi Johnson and Bristol Palin, thought they were just a couple of irresponsible teens (hardly earthshattering news) while they ignore John Edwards’ felony behavior of paying his mistress hush money from campaign funds.
They are not just biased, they are active propogandists.
Proper grammar saves lives.

Weasels
Kayla Sunday, May 10th at 9:02PM EST (link)These jerks were ok with taking a check from Edwards while they were planning to ruin him. All of them are total losers.
I understand the jerk part of it

hindsight
dt (Diary) Sunday, May 10th at 11:54PM EST (link)I think you’re judging them with the benefit of hindsight that they didn’t have. Thus, to call them losers is, in my opinion a little bit unfair. If they thought it was possible that the rumors were true but weren’t sure (and keep in mind these are the people that are predisposed to disbelieve this sort of thing about their candidate; the guy for whom they have, in many cases, given up years of their lives), then they would be loathe to act publicly or privately against him. I take it from the story narrative that the doomsday scenario would have been invoked if two predicates were met: 1) Edwards was heading towards the nomination and 2) the rumors turned out to have basis in fact. Based on what they knew at the time, and based on when they did it, I think they were being perfectly prudent, and frankly, I’m not sure what else they could have done.
They are losers
Kayla Monday, May 11th at 12:54AM EST (link)They didn’t need hindsight. According to George Step (can’t spell his name)they knew the guy was running around. Where is the morality here? As a Repub this would have been great for Edwards to win the nomination and this blow up in Oct. But he and his campaign had an obligation to the Dems who believed in them and worked for them, and sent money to them, to be honest. This would have have destroyed the Dem party. And instead of being honest and saying “our man in unelectable,” and withdrawing from the race, they hatched this repugnant plan. All the while making sure they got their paychecks of course. The arrogance of Edwards and his minions is astounding.
Mostly agree
dt (Diary) Monday, May 11th at 3:21PM EST (link)I agree with everything you say here except for the part about whether they knew. I don’t know who George Step is or how credible he is, but I know several people that did work for Edwards, and I can guarantee that they didn’t know (or frankly believe) that Edwards would have had the hubris to run for office having this in his past. If they did know, you’re right, they were weasels for not outing him immediately. If not, I’m really not sure what else they could have done than what they did.

More lib news bias, as if it weren’t proven beyond a shadow of a doubt already…

Don't know if I agree about your comment about people in January of '08
dt (Diary) Sunday, May 10th at 11:52PM EST (link)Had Edwards been able to pull a win in Iowa (in early January), the landscape of the race would have been very different. If they did put the strategy together in late December/early January as the article says, the timing makes a lot of sense. Agree on everything else.
Leo Hindery and John Edwards
katesmith (Diary) Monday, May 11th at 1:04AM EST (link)Hindery like Soros seems to be everywhere, recently attached to the Tom Daschle tax ‘snafu.’ Prior to that he was sr. economic adviser to John Edwards. On 10/1/07, NY Magazine summarized Hindery’s views on the upcoming primary v Mrs. Clinton. Hindery said, if Edwards could just retail himself to the body politic without the press, I think he’d be the nominee today. Even though they have almost total control of the press, nothing is ever enough for the left.
John Edwards is niether

No heroes here
fisk2521 Monday, May 11th at 8:22AM EST (link)There are few words to describe a ‘man’ like Edwards.
When I first read about the ‘doomsday’ plot by Edwards’ staffers I thought, ‘well at least there are some liberals who believe that his behavior towards his wife and family are just wrong….and we must reveal him for what it is”.
Of course, that’s not actually true is it? They were not taking any stand against a man of so little character, but afraid he would win the nomination and NOT win the election because the majority of Americans would find him reprehensible when it was revealed…. anything to beat a Republican presidency regardless of who it was.
There is no integrity here on anyone’s part…if they thought he could have won regardless of his lack of character, they would have supported him.
Seems that happened anyway.
