(Via Drudge) 17 billion. Off of a 3.4 trillion dollar budget.
How quaint.
May 7 (Bloomberg) — President Barack Obama is seeking $81 billion more in spending on domestic initiatives in his record $3.55 trillion budget plan while calling on Congress to trim $17 billion worth of programs, including tax breaks for the oil and gas industries.
[snip]
Unlike past years, the administration won’t release until May 11 its “analytical perspectives” or “historic tables” that help explain its spending decisions and put them in context. Obama repeated his pledge to cut the deficit in half by the end of his term in 2012.
I know that this is going to sound like a radical notion, Mr. President: but maybe if you stopped letting your fellow-Democrats swill at the trough…

“I’m going to come back and say, under any set of assumptions, finding the 17 billion dollars a year, I don’t think, is a side show,” White House budget chief Peter Orszag said on MSNBC.
Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, told FOX News that he’s not impressed by Obama’s $17 billion proposed cut.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/05/06/white-house-official-obama-cut-programs-save-b-budget/
“It’s as if you took a teaspoon of water out of the bathtub while you left the spicket on at full speed,” he said, referring to Obama’s $3.4 trillion budget.
“Basically right now we’re running up a debt that is so high as a percentage of our gross national product that we couldn’t even get into the European union,” he said. “I mean we’re headed to third-world country status if we keep this up.”
Obama has said repeatedly his administration will go through the budget “line by line” to eliminate waste. But the resulting savings are relatively minor compared with the government’s fiscal woes, especially a deficit that’s likely to exceed $1.5 trillion this year.
Republicans weren’t impressed with the cuts.
“While we appreciate the newfound attention to saving taxpayer dollars from this administration, we respectfully suggested that we should do far more,” House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said.
Too much saving….

Those tax cuts for oil and gas industries...
Crowe (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 3:04PM EST (link)… the language isn’t clear. Does that mean the tax cuts are going to the oil and gas companies as part of the budget cuts, or does that mean the tax cuts for those industries are some of the “programs” being sliced?
I’d have a hard time believing the former, but don’t know how a tax cut could be considered a program that could be cut to trim fat off spending.
But then, the ways of this Administration don’t generally make sense to me anyhow.

About half of the trims would come from curbing defense programs that have been identified by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates as expendable
izoneguy (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 3:33PM EST (link)About half of the trims would come from curbing defense programs that have been identified by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates as expendable. They include ending production of the F-22 fighter plane and canceling a new presidential helicopter fleet.
…The proposed cuts, if adopted by Congress, would not actually reduce government spending. Obama’s budget would increase overall spending; any savings from the program terminations and reductions would be shifted to the president’s priorities.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Obama did pledge to cut deficits in half to $533 billion by the end of his term- which is bigger than anything Bush ever forecasted. (Fox News)
This video i found today basically shows what different news sources are saying about the budget cuts. Definitely worth a look:

Yep, government math
paulincolo (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 4:28PM EST (link)I keep hearing O’s spokesman say we are committed to cutting the deficit in half by the end of his first term. This is of course, outright deception. As you noted, not half of Bush’s last year, but O’s first after he quadruples the deficit.
So if Bush deficit is D, then 4D/2 = O’s 4th year. Congratulate yourself if you got 2D, double the deficit of Bush in O’s fourth year. I wish some of these talking heads would point that out.
Of course this doesn’t even count the trillions added to national debt in years 1-3.
Congress can only ADD ... Subtraction is heresy
GreyCloak (Diary) Friday, May 8th at 7:54AM EST (link)The dot.bomb bust, 9/11, and an Iraq War that can be debated … Bush’s budgets never exceeded $482 Billion in DEFICITS.
Actual expenditures for Fiscal 2009 may create a $1.3 Trillion DEFICIT, but it was never in a budget … the $800 Billion “stimulus package” (give or take a $100 billion) was passed by a Democrat Congress and signed by Democrat Obama this year! But Obama counts it as part of the “inherited deficit.”
When somebody says “I’ll reduce the DEBT by half,” I’ll pay attention. Until then, I’ve sold my children to the US Government … perhaps THEY will revolt against serfdom some day. I hope.
Which deficit? Not his.
abbynormal Thursday, May 7th at 4:41PM EST (link)According to this speech from February, it’s the “inherited deficit” he intends to cut in half by the end of his first term; not the deficit he’s creating.

What year did the White House start releasing budget estimates?
bret Thursday, May 7th at 5:23PM EST (link)I don’t recall ever seeing a “white house budget estimate” as separate from the CBO before this year. Has this actually happened in the past, or is this the first time that the white house is releasing separate budget estimates from the CBO?

Not sure what kind of new math the article is performing
civil truth (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 11:43PM EST (link)…but where I come from, 0.5% of $6,350 would be a bit less than $32, not $61. Maybe the author is a graduate of the Obama University. Or he made a typo and didn’t pick it up.
