I was lucky enough to make it to the DC School Choice Rally (sponsored by DC Children First and DC Parents for School Choice) today, thanks to a (liberal) friend of mine who was able to watch my son for a few hours – and who didn’t mind being asked for a favor like this on very short notice. Then again, she and her husband moved to their current address at least partly to make sure that their kids wouldn’t be stuck in a horrible public school. I understand that sentiment entirely: my wife and I made similar calculations.
The Weekly Standard, Heritage, and the Corner all have some good coverage on the rally (see also Instapundit), so I’m mostly going to just step back and let the videos of Virginia Walden Ford (executive director of DC Parents for School Choice) and the photos speak for themselves. I will note this, though: this “compromise” that the administration is currently offering is nothing but. It’s an attempt to get the heat off of both it and the teachers’ unions that are trying to gut school choice. By keeping the existing program running long enough to finish out the current scholarship roster, the White House hopes to take the personal urgency off of the grassroot activists that are currently raising a stink.
And the grassroots activists know this.
Interview with Virginia Walden Ford
The poor woman had to do the above interview twice: I mucked up the recording on the first one.

paulincolo (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 1:15AM EST (link)The Washington Post article noted in the link: “The Department of Education recently issued a three-year analysis of student achievement under the program that found limited gains in reading and no significant progress in math.”
A previous Wall Street Journal:
“The latest annual evaluation was finally released Friday, and it shows measurable academic gains. The Opportunity Scholarship Program provides $7,500 vouchers to 1,700 low-income families in D.C. to send their children to private schools. Ninety-nine percent of the children are black or Hispanic, and there are more than four applicants for each scholarship.
The 2008 report demonstrated progress among certain subgroups of children but not everyone. This year’s report shows statistically significant academic gains for the entire voucher-receiving population.”

This is going to sound really bad,
xenothan Thursday, May 7th at 2:29AM EST (link)but I don’t get it. Was this a pilot program that, if proven successful, was to roll out nation wide? I am all for improving education as I have four children in school. What I don’t understand is why we are in an uproar over 1,700 low-income families not getting vouchers anymore. I pay federal and state taxes every year and part of that goes to education. Why should more of my tax money go to a lucky few?
If this was about freedom of choice for everyone, then I could get behind the idea. If the government would allow everyone the choice to pay taxes for public education and send their children to public schools or not pay those taxes and use that money for private education, then I could see the all the hoopla.
Don’t get me wrong, I think it stinks that these children were given the chance to go to private schools and then had it taken away through no fault of their own, but just because they are from low-income families they should get special preference over other children whose families cannot pay for a private education.
If the public schools are so messed up that we need an entitlement like this shouldn’t we be trying to revamp the current system, for the benefit of all children, instead of choosing a few lucky children to receive a good education?
The Teachers Unions own your party. This means revamping the current system is not going to be possible.
Martin Knight (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 2:49AM EST (link)There is a reason why the Obamas and most Dems in DC send their children to Sidwell Friends and other tony private schools. Their children at least get an education.
Second, these 1700 kids are not getting anything “extra” – at least $9000 is the per child cost of education in DC – these kids get less than that, and the rest goes to the Teachers Unions. Most of their parents are willingly taking second jobs to keep their kids somewhere where they’re actually learning.
PS: Not enough lifeboats doesn’t mean everyone must go down with the ship.

xenothan Thursday, May 7th at 4:00AM EST (link)I thought the teacher’s unions only supported liberal dems or has that changed recently?
Thank you for your points on lifeboats and Oscar Schindler. That really put it into perspective for me. Some children getting a real education is much better than none. I guess I am just getting tired of every time I turn around I hear of more and more spending which means my taxes go up again. At least this money is going to something productive, not some fish hatchery or a bridge to nowhere.
You may have just passed the Moby test; keyword: "may" [nt]
Martin Knight (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 4:18AM EST (link)heh, thanks for the "almost" vote of confidence
xenothan Thursday, May 7th at 5:29AM EST (link)I let myself fall victim to one of my own pet peeves; not researching a topic before posting. With so much going on over here I let myself get lazy and didn’t know the vouchers were well short of funding full tuition. The fact that the parents of these children cared enough about their education to work two or more jobs to make up the difference proves I was wrong in assuming these were just more handouts.
I can see why the libs are so against the program now. They rely on the undereducated to remain in power. If these children actually learn something and become productive adults they have lost potential voters. I’m all for starving the left of voters. Thanks again for your insight.
Heh; The "may" *may* have just faded a little. [nt]
Martin Knight (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 5:52AM EST (link)more of my tax money
mom2oneson (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 10:00AM EST (link)I don’t know *EXACTLY* how the funding works in the DC School Discrict. I wish someone that knew would post. Some money they recieve is tied to attendance. If the child is low income and they do the free school lunch form they get even more money from the federal government. If the child has a special needs label they get even more. They districts could care less about a kids education they want to make sure the kids show up so they get more money. It wouldn’t surprise me if they falsified attendance and free lunch records. This is where the parents have muscle by having their kids show up or to enroll them or not or not to fill out the free lunch form or not. It would directly cut funding to the school district.
I know here they have two days where they use the attendance for cash from some source and they have a party on those days so the kids will show up. I don’t know if private schools get funds from the federal government apart from these vouchers.
also private schools are much less expensive
mom2oneson (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 10:28AM EST (link)DC spends around 16K per student I don’t know if that is everything and if that average includes spending of children with special needs. Here in my area the districts spends 7K. Every private school here is less than that and the education is far better. I don’t know how to breaks down, I hope someone who posts does that can differentiate between special needs, title 1 funds from school lunch forms and stuff like that.
There are a million things to criticize but the cost of books is horrible with public schools. The books are often garbage and they raise the prices on them. With private schools and homeschools the books are way less and they are much better. It’s like $400 for school in a box and that is paying retail price I bet schools could get it for $180 or $200. I don’t know why they don’t order those for each kid. There is one school in a box publisher that has a self teaching curriculum even. If I was a decision maker for a public school I would get those and tell those high priced publishers raising the prices to find another source of revenue. Plus there is so much competition the curriculums to choose from are excellent.
Do you think
Karina (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 7:10AM EST (link)people will still think those opposed to Obama’s policies are doing so only because of the color of his skin? Wrong is wrong no matter what color you are. Maybe this will change that notion…for some.
My free market instincts
gonzo55 (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 7:28AM EST (link)tell me that if the Dems continue enacting policies that destroy the lives of black people, the free market should produce a more helpful alternative (here: the GOP), and blacks will start voting for the alternative.
I worry, though, that this requires an informed electorate to work, and who knows if someone who drops out of a horrible DC school at age 17 can really be considered ‘informed’. Yet another small way in which the libs subvert the free market.

grandmas and aunts too
mom2oneson (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 10:46AM EST (link)I can’t tell you how many grandmas I’ve met raising their children that are like oh I wish I could homeschool..the schools are so ___. They are tired of the raw end of the deal and the social problems the PS create for them. Also I think many black communities are kind of matriarchal (is that the right word?) older women have a great deal of influence and are often the main support of the community. This is really a special group, usually they are usually mature l(like they don’t have boyfriends or are obsessed with their nails etc) and they are SOOO encouraging of higher education.
They see opportunity and not just obstacles to whine about. I think we would see an explosion of young professionals in 10 – 20 years if they pulled their kids out of the public schools.

mom2oneson (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 10:55AM EST (link)We should all get more invovled with our local library and request and request and request books that talk about things with public schools. That is one way people can get accurate information. Request these books get on the bookmobiles. Most libraries have community rooms, we can reserve them and put an add in the paper and provide information. Projects have community rooms too.
this is a peril of gay marriage
gonzo55 (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 2:08PM EST (link)By awarding children to two men or two women involved in a functionally hedonistic relationship, the government ensures kids will be brought up by people unrelated by blood who may not be willing to invest the time in the kids’ interests necessary to find the best school. As K-Lo has said several times recently, supporting school choice means caring about other people’s kids, and this is very hard to do.

Please let us know about these rallies in advance so we can ALL email Mr. Steele and ask him to put it on his schedule.

cooganug Thursday, May 7th at 2:12PM EST (link)they just see them as a political commodity. Poor people don’t have the time or resources to pay attention to the details of policy. By promising them something that looks nice and shiby: Free health care, negative tax rates!, they are just betting that poor people will be unable to look behind the curtain and see the disasterous consequences of these policies. It is disgusting and cycnical and yet another reason why Obama will bring nothing but disaster to our urban centers.
