I have nothing really to add to either this or this, except to note that:
a) I’m not particularly surprised;
b) The Republican primary in PA next year just got a lot more straightforward, while the Democratic one is now going to be significantly less so;
c) The Democrats are rapidly running out of reasons why they can’t pass their hearts’ desires.
And, oh yes:
d) Elections have consequences, and we’re about to have a year and a half of some. Please keep that in mind in November 2010.

Operation Chaos Time? Will the Democrats be able to clear the field for Specter? They'll certainly try
red_oakster (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 1:24PM EST (link)This is a man who helped deliver the Clarence Thomas, Roberts, and Alito confirmations. There will have to be some lefties unhappy with having Specter as their senator.
There also is a great opportunity for conservatives to register and vote in the Democratic primary for a candidate other than Specter. This chance should not be missed.
In the silver lining department
red_oakster (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 1:46PM EST (link)Specter’s disappearance removes his seniority from GOP committee assignments. From now on, the GOP presence on the Judiciary Committee will be solidly conservative. It actually leaves Snowe and Collins with a little less leverage within the caucus on social issues.
Specter is a coward who is only interested in....
Wubbies World (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 1:54PM EST (link)… his own political self preservation. Sen Coryn nailed it with his statement to thew affect.
Specter has and always will be about being the left of center moderate he always has been. He is also about his own power and preservation. He has no morals or principles, just himself and his survival. His votes have always reflected that in the Senate.
I am glad he is gone.

Do not use the words "moderate" and "Specter" (or "Snowe", "Collins", "Schwarzenegger", etc.) in the same sentence please. [nt]

aesthete (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 9:24PM EST (link)Snowe and Collins are more conservative than their respective demographics would imply (which is still not much), and they generally keep their mouths shut WRT their “moderatism”. Sure they aren’t Rudy Guilianis or Mitt Romneys, but they’re not in the same category as the backstabber is.
(W/Arnold, I have no idea, so I’ll refrain from commenting on him.)
