This is how you do it, by the way. You don’t let them define the agenda; you certainly don’t let them define the terms; you concede nothing (you can always agree, but you do not concede); you keep going back to a disputed point over and over again until they get tired of trying to sneak one past you; you never lose your cool; when you catch them trying a stupid tactic like read a headline and pretend that it’s established truth, you call them on it without a hint of self-consciousness; and in this case, you don’t accept the other side’s presumptuous bluff that they speak for the American people. Because they don’t.
And you don’t give a tinker’s dam if they like you afterward. To quote Truman: if you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.

SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, April 25th at 4:47PM EST (link)The lack of strong Republican voices speaking the truth on this topic infuriates me.
I don’t count Cheney in the mix, but where’s Mitch McConnel, where’s Congressional leaders where’s anyone else. Johnny Mac has never liked this topic, and I understand the reasons why, but good grief the silence coming from Republicans is deafening.
The lack of a strong response on these topics is what is killing this party and until there are strong Republican voices speaking the truth on these matters clearly and loudly, the party will never return to power.

TNJim (Diary) Saturday, April 25th at 5:21PM EST (link)with your sentiment, Steve:
“Not to go all Jeff Goldstein here on language and meaning, but conservatives have crept towards conceding the definition of “torture” to the media and the left.”
I hope he was referring to “conservatives” in Congress and not to conservatives in general, because out hre in the “wild” We’ve conceded no such thing. But you’re right, the “lack of a strong response” to this and many other things the left tries to redefine is what’s killing this party.
And Norah O'Donnell is a slobbering liberal mouthpiece.
Praying (Diary) Saturday, April 25th at 4:45PM EST (link)I hope she reviews this video and sees just how idiotic she sounds! My dad was in the military, my brother was an officer in the military, and my son hopes to attend a military academy. Our own people – Americans – go through every single thing we did to these terrorists as part of their SERE training. I doubt that I would be willing to let my baby go off to the military if I thought this was “torture”. I’m sure it’s not a walk in the park – I’m sure it pushes the limits – but just as an athlete trains for a marathon, so must our military train. I guess if you didn’t train and tried to run a marathon, you could call it torture. But who would really believe you? Another observation – liberals are wimps.

The MSM is a complete fraud. I am asking all Republicans and conservatives that you should debate and berate the MSM every chance you get. What I mean by this is if you go on Hardball call Matthews a complete fraud and an idiot, who cares he hates you anyway.
Everyone should ckeck out the “torture memo” debate between Nora Odonnell and Dick Cheney’s daughter, AWESOME (connect at Weekly Standard Blog).
The only thing I would change if I was on TV would be to add words like “Nora cannot believe you are this ignorant…this naive..this left wing”
I would call them on their bias make them fight back. Look what happened when an average guy at one of the Tea Parties challenged and called out that CNN reporter, I think she still is on holidays.
To repeat; HEY REPUBLICANS THE MSM HATES YOU FIGHT BACK AND TREAT THEM ACCORDINGLY!!!
This is what I have been saying forever now.
jeffreywturner (Diary) Saturday, April 25th at 9:42PM EST (link)The GOP and consrvatives everywhere are going to keep facing defeat at the polls as well as legislatively UNTIL WE FIX THE MEDIA PROBLEM.
The good news is that the print media is fixing itself already by dying.
All we have to do now is address and marginalize the television media.
I would advise that starting now, we NEVER say the word media without the word liberal in front of it. Cram it down their throats. Every interview, every quote should contain the term “liberal media”, so that they can’t even quote us without saying it themselves.
We need to make it so the average American looks at the MSM the way we look at the supermarket tabloids; strictly for entertainment and not as a source for useful information.
If we could make it so that most Americans actually researched things themselves instead of just trusting whatever they hear from the media, we could shift the entire debate in this country about 10 feet to the right.
“Life is too short, can’t we all just eat pork and kill some terrorists?”

The video
Justin_Case (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 7:43AM EST (link)refers to William Wallace as portrayed by Mel Gibson in Braveheart.
THIS is torture! He survived the hanging.
davo119 Sunday, April 26th at 8:44AM EST (link)And then the verdict of the court:
“So resolved that the above-mentioned William … should be dragged from the Palace of Westminster to the Tower of London and from the Tower of London and thus through the middle of the city to the Elms (Smithfield) and as a punishment for the robberies, murders, and felonies which he had committed should there be hung and afterwards disembowelled.
“And because he had been outlawed and had not been afterwards restored to.) the King’s peace he should be beheaded.
“And afterwards as a punishment for the great wickedness which he had practised towards God and His holy church by burning churches, vessels and reliquaries, his heart, liver, lungs, and all internal organs should be thrown into the fire and burned …”
The execution of Wallace stands forth among the violent ends which have a place in history; and those bloody trophies, the head, arms and legs which were set up to frighten a broken people into submission, only served to deepen their wrath and renew their courage.
Never give in! Never! Never! Never!

mom2oneson (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 12:23PM EST (link)There is a Part 2 to the interview
BAW Saturday, April 25th at 7:20PM EST (link)At least I’m pretty sure this is only the first part. I watched two last night but they were not from MSNBC. They were posted by someone else and linked at dailykos. The comments are disgusting but Liz Cheney (does she use her married name?) was brilliant throughout. At the end of the second one Nora said they’d be back to talk about something little McCain said about the former VP but I never found a part 3.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlI9KkQj3Do&feature=related
Someone said the release of the memos was an Obama administration’s declaration of war on the Bush administration. This is why I was so glad the former VP spoke up. They fight back. They know what they are talking about and actually meet the definition of “articulate.”
In any war, anytime, I am proud to be on the same side as the Cheneys, Dick, Lynne, and Liz!
No Wonder the LIbs Hate the Cheneys....
furious (Diary) Saturday, April 25th at 7:41PM EST (link)…Mom, Big or L’il Sis, none of them give an inch to a liberal opponent (for which both Joe Lieberman and John Edward still bear the scars). None of them apologize for being who they are (see: “Michael Steele” and “D.L. Hughley”). None of them are embarassed to stand up for what they believe.
And that’s just the Cheney WOMEN. Dad’s a whole ‘nother irritable ol’bear.
Wish the current crop of senior Republicans (looking at YOU, Sen. McCain) had half the gumption the Cheney women do.

A Foreign Occupation
avgamerican (Diary) Saturday, April 25th at 8:33PM EST (link)Obama is proving again that he can’t protect America. It was never his goal to protect America nor was it his communist-demcratic party’s objective. Obama and his hordes are aiding the terrorists. I think this mob wants to see America fall from leadership of the world and be subjected to the European United Nations one world government. I don’t even look at the dems as Americans anymore. They are a foreign occupation.
Inept Republican Leadership
avgamerican (Diary) Saturday, April 25th at 8:45PM EST (link)How come the republican congressman and candidates can’t speak like this? I always got the feeling during the debtes that the wrong people were running for office. Liz Cheney and Mark Victor Hansen have a better grasp of the facts and can deliver the punch.
Wow! Great grasp of the facts and debate control.
Old_Crow (Diary) Saturday, April 25th at 9:03PM EST (link)Liz was correct, we have decades of experience with these same interrogation tools used during training thousands of our own military personnel. An appropriate line in the sand was drawn so that the interrogations never crossed over into the realm of torture.
BTW, terrorists are not entitled to protections under the Geneva Conventions. So the WWII argument is a non-starter. Both Japanese as well as American POW’s in WWII were entitled to those protections. That’s why there were prosecutions after the war.
Interesting that the ‘Bama fan club sees nothing wrong with executing three pirates, two of which were unarmed. But think that rough interrogations of three HVT’s was cruel and inhuman…

eburke (Diary) Saturday, April 25th at 9:25PM EST (link)The reason most Republican spokesmen SUCK at debates and in interviews is because they don’t have the stones to challenge the premises of the questions. The allow the libs and the MSM radicals frame the question(s) and fight the war on THEIR turf.
Liz’s performance should be required viewing for every stinkin’ GOP leader and candidate for public office – you dismantle liberals by refusing to accept their cliched BS w/out challenging it, mock them (nicely) when they substitute news headlines for facts, and you totally change the battlefield on which you are fighting.
It can be done, oh wimpoid GOP establishment….but that will mean you actually have to BELIEVE what you say you do.

Liz Cheney is a Bright Star for GOP
rsrob Sunday, April 26th at 2:50AM EST (link)Ms Cheney should be making the rounds on all the networks. By far she makes the best case on this issue.
Well done Ms Cheney in terms of going into the lions den and going on the offensive to get several critical points across:
- this is NOT torture; it does not make sense to call it torture when we make our own undergo waterboarding as training
- 3 people have undergone waterboarding under the program; cmon now – even rational liberals can say that the harsh interrogation of 3 people who provided life saving intelligence does NOT make this much of a “program”
- on top of this, GWB admin went to great pains to brief both sides of the aisle with the boundaries under which these methods were to be used including a relatively brief period of time after 9/11
Bottom line this is not torture, it is not an ongoing program, and it was used on only 3 people under limited circumstances for a limited period of time – AND it worked (again saving lives)
Wow, Norah got bulldozed!
Britcom (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 3:47AM EST (link)That was obviously wholly unexpected.
We need to get Liz Cheney into a room with all of the clueless GOP leadership so she can teach them all how to have a spine with the leftist media.

Whenever I watch a MSM interview or a press conference
Achance (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 11:44AM EST (link)with a Republican officeholder, I want to scream “Objection” at three quarters of the questions. Reporters constantly lead and ask questions that assume facts not in evidence and STUPID Repulicans try to mumble their way through explaining that, no, they haven’t stopped beating their wife because they never started beating her; the listener gets lost in your answer and his conclusion is that yes, you did beat your wife.
Just the most mimimal preparation for dealing with improperly formed questions should be enough for people who should be accomplished public speakers. Most administrative and trial advocates can coach lay witnesses well enough in a few minutes that they don’t usually get tripped up by the opposition, so a day or two of training for high powered politicians and press people should be adequate.
In Vino Veritas
These are politicians you speak of, Achance. Lay witnesses
janis (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 11:52AM EST (link)are probably easier to teach since they know they need the help. Politicians seem to think that being elected makes them instant experts on just about everything. And God knows they love to hear their own voices droning on and on, even if what they are saying is absolute claptrap.
That would explain a lot of officeholders, but not
Achance (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 12:07PM EST (link)the Press Sec types. The only GWB Press Sec that ever challenged David Gregory, the worst at this stuff, was Tony Snow. Gregory is as bad as a senator at in the guise of a question he testifies for half an hour and then asks you to agree.
In Vino Veritas
Ah, Gregory comes from the "Charlie Rose" school of
janis (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 12:15PM EST (link)journalism. Set up your interview subject with a question, interrupt them numerous times while they attempt to answer, and then ascribe conclusions to them they never said. Alternatively, ask a question so overloaded with bias and misleading information that it begs the “Objection!!” that you mentioned above.
And I would agree with you that most Press Sec types might not fall into the category I described above, with one exception–I give you

It's too obvious that Gibbs knows he's lying and is smirking
Achance (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 12:24PM EST (link)about how the complicit “journalists” are just going to dutifully go out and spread the lie. I can’t stand to watch the man or the fawning reporters!
In Vino Veritas
Yeah, my experience with watching the lot of them is pretty limited.
janis (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 12:38PM EST (link)Almost non-existent, as a matter of fact. Gave it up in favor of still having a television that worked instead of a box with broken glass in it. Tried just having a basket of balled up socks next to me while I watched Bush press conferences back in the early days of the war, but couldn’t get any satisfaction out of throwing those. Then I tried tennis balls, which gave me at least a solid “Thunk!”, but they tended to bounce onto other stuff that broke, so those had to go. Loved Ari Fleischer, and worshipped the ground that Donald Rumsfeld trod upon when he gave his pressers, but Scotty-boy was the straw that broke it for me.
The viciousness of what passes for journalists these days is appalling.
Tony Snow...

from a post on my site...
cannedjam (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 2:29PM EST (link)The funny thing about this is if you do a quick google search on this exchange – there are lefty blogs contending that Norah was the one who actually laid the “smackdown” on Liz. This just goes to show how both sides of the political spectrum enjoy separate realities, the left’s just more closely resembling fantasy.
In a clear indication that Norah has detached herself from reality, she claims that we cannot waterboard captives because we would not want these techniques used on our own soldiers if they were captured. If only we could ask our beheaded and mutilated soldiers if they would have preferred being waterboarded as opposed to being executed – alas we will never know.
Bottom line, the techniques we used on these captives were the same techniques that we historically and currently use on our own soldiers during survival training. The point Cheney was making, and O’Donnell missed, was how can we not define these techniques as torture when they are used on our own, but consider them torturous when used on someone else?
My favorite part of the exchange is where O’Donnell actually believes she has caught Cheney in a misstep by defending the fact that we had lawyers determine to what extent we could pressure the detainees before it constituted torture. But according to O’Donnell herself, she contends we violated the Geneva Convention, so I guess the interpretation of law should be left up to television anchors, and not lawyers. Next time our government tries to determine what actions fall within the confines of a law perhaps we should not seek the advice of those who are paid to advise, but instead give MSNBC a ring.

Geneva Conventions
DefendUSA (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 2:55PM EST (link)If I have said this once, I have said it a thousand times.
The 1949 Geneva Conventions were not attended by Iraq or Afghanistan. They did not sign or paricipate. This means that no matter what people think about the way we treat combatants vs. non (or those combatants in civilian clothes), it means that they can kill Nick Berg with a knife, they can hang bodies from bridges. And the laws of the US prevent us from that eye for an eye stuff, unless threat to life is maintained for ROE. An who the heck legislates how people read what is a threat or not.
O’donnell is another tool of the left who ignores the fact that all who read those memos are as complicit as she maintains Cheney is. Her ididotic statement as perused by her own reality, not fact, but feelings was that this info could have been attained another way and lives would still have been saved.
Woulda, coulda, shoulda, Norah. You’ll never know and it’s beating a dead horse.
It’s done, it’s over and Liz Cheney smacked you down. Go read what Porter Goss had to say at WaPo, I think.
