Somali Pirates up the ante.

As you probably noticed, I’ve been polite in reacting to the administration’s handling of the first wave of Somali piracy. This has been mostly out of pragmatism: like Jonah Goldberg and Ed Morrissey, my interest is in seeing dead or stopped pirates, and my generally low opinion of Democratic Presidents aside when it comes to setting foreign policy, this is actually one time when Obama’s natural instinct for detachment would be fine. The military knows how to handle piracy, particularly when they’re not required to worry about nation building whatever euphemism the administration eventually comes up with to replace ‘nation-building.’ Which they wouldn’t have to. I’m even pleased to see the chest-beating bravado from the Online Left: it’s, well, cute – and God knows that their ideology gives so few opportunities to act anything like the ‘primitive’ men that they publicly deride and privately envy.

Besides, I also knew that this was going to happen (via Jammie Wearing Fool):

Somali pirates in brazen challenge to Obama and allies as they hijack FOUR more ships… and open fire on a fifth

Somali pirates have brazenly hijacked four more ships in the Gulf of Aden over the last 24 hours and opened fire on a fifth.

The pirates captured two trawlers yesterday, a cargo ship named the M.V. Irene overnight, and a second cargo ship named the M.V. Seahorse today.

This afternoon a Nato official said a band of pirates had opened fire on a fifth cargo ship – but it managed to escape.

…at least in the sense that this particular confrontation was inevitable. These guys are, after all, pirates – and they’re quite keen to find out just how far they can push things. As Ed noted here, they’ve worked out that we’re ready to shoot them if they grab Americans… but how will we react to Filipino, or Egyptian hostages? For that matter, how will we react to our Congressmen being shot at? And how will we react when we see the consequences of a soft response – or a hard one – plastered all over our television screens and monitors? Because innocent people are going to die either way. That happens, in the real world. Fortunately – and thanks partially to the currently strutting Online Left – it’s going to be fairly hard for the President to go passive on this. And I of course expect them to fully support Obama when he gives the order to shell or bomb notable pirate havens. Even when it looks bad on the evening news.

That’s part of “I got this,” you see.

Unfortunately, the DoD is blabbing...

fmaidment (Diary) Tuesday, April 14th at 7:42PM EST (link)

…meaning they’ve put our soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen at risk. You’ll note that following 9/11, we said we’d get the terrorists. We didn’t say, “we’re planning on invading Afghanistan.”

The DoD is talking about attacking the pirate’s land bases. They could simply say, “we’re planning a response” or “we’ll be dealing with the pirates.” This would leave them at least wondering what our intentions are. Instead, they are now preparing for our assault.

Great job, PresBo.

But how could we attack their bases in Somalia?

bk (Diary) Tuesday, April 14th at 9:53PM EST (link)

That sounds like an attack on the soil of a country that for all practical purposes poses no threat against us, we haven’t gotten 17 resolutions against it approved in the UN and their blessing for any joint attack, and we haven’t worked with our allies to coordinate a response.

Sounds to me kinda like a case of going it alone with a cowboy mentality against a foreign country in no position to attack us, not involved with 9/11, not involved with al Qaida, not involved with world terrorism on any grand scale (oops I forgot we’re not supposed to say terrorism), not in uniform (i.e. just civilians when on dry land), and without any definition of success and with no target date for when it will end. Oh and there’d be plenty of civilian casualties, certainly including children and probably including women.

I thought six months ago all these were the things we were supposed to vote to change. I must have misunderstood.

Not to mention ...

I United Nations resolution to wipe out the pirates could happen overnight.

Unlike Saddam Hussein they have not greased the United Nations “skids” by spreading around millions of dollars in “Food for Oil” slush-fund money, buying the votes of the UN representatives from France, Germany and Russia.

The Somali pirates don’t have all that oil money to throw around, all they have is their ransom…..

Say, you don’t suppose that they have been skimming some of the millions of dollars of ransom off to pay protection to the UN?

Nah, would never happen.

And, oh yeah, a Seal team on board to welcome them.

More dead pirates would help this situation greatly.

If you read my comment, you will remember that it was about the millions of non-whites who vote D despite having strong conservative views.

For example, blacks in CA voted about 70% against gay marriage in the last election.

The term in question – BoyPresident is not, in my opinion, going to help persuade that 70% to consider voting R because years ago, because calling a black man “boy” was a way of letting him know his place.

Could it call up some deep negative emotions in those conservative votes? Could it hurt efforts to get them to consider the Republican party?

I know from my work, stuff like that doesn’t help.

Notice in my comment, I strongly and explicitly said that I don’t consider BoyPresident racist but that didn’t stop you from immediately accusing me of saying that. In fact, you claimed I called all of RedState racist. My actual exact quote was:

“I think this site and group is much closer to the ideal of judging by their character than their skin color than just about any group I’ve come across on the internet or elsewhere.”

The comment about demographics simply meant that to win elections, now and even more so in the future, R’s are going to have to win more black, Asian and Latino voters.

At least according to every population trend I have seen.

Now, if you want to ban me, go for it but I’m not playing dancing bear for you anymore.

To take a different tack against the Pirates,

Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, April 14th at 8:59PM EST (link)

I think we should go back to “Ignore them; maybe they’ll go away.” Well, almost, anyway.

Lest we be accused of acting “unilaterally” or “arrogantly,” we should take only the actions necessary to protect ships sailing under a US flag or with American citizens on board. What those actions might be I can even leave up to the Authority himself, as long as He can figure out something effective. You can’t tell me those Naval Aviators wouldn’t love to be given open season on pirates attempting to board the Love Boat.

We should do NOTHING about the ships currently being held by the pirates–their own countries can handle that in their own way.

Let this stand as the modus operandi until the rest of the world, through the UN, BEGS us to help them handle their problems. If they don’t need us, fine. If they do, it should cost them, arrogant SOB’s that we are.

And any idea of “proportional response” should be immediately tossed aside.

I have to say

BlueLandRed (Diary) Tuesday, April 14th at 9:25PM EST (link)

that I agree with you. We should definitely protect US ships and citizens, but I’m not sure why we should just step up and start policing this part of the world.. gratis.

As for attacking their land bases/ports. I’d be more for this if I thought it would “knock out” the pirates. But the “barriers to entry” for piracy are very low, so I just can’t see how any set of attacks is going to lead to long term success.

Personally, I’d like to see Congress start handing out Letters of Marques and let shipping companies fund their own protection.

I'm glad the point was pretty clear.

Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, April 14th at 9:48PM EST (link)

We need to resist the urge to expand this success into a wider battle against all pirates. We must protect ourselves and let the Devil take the rest.

Problem with that strategy

Kyle-MI (Diary) Tuesday, April 14th at 10:04PM EST (link)

From every ship and crew that they kidnap, they get a ransom with which they buy more weapons and boats. Then they grab more ships and it just escalates. Sooner or later more U.S. ships will get hit.

Maybe. Maybe not.

Flagstaff (Diary) Wednesday, April 15th at 12:51AM EST (link)

Maximum protection at minimal cost. Right now, we are doing nothing, and getting no protection, only mop-up action.

I suspect that in your scenario, the other countries would be carrying on their own operations before that happens, or would ask for help. And the pirates have to survive to prosper, don’t they? Heck, we could all just avoid those waters, perhaps, except they seem to cover the entire Indian Ocean.

How about this for a tactical response

Next93 (Diary) Tuesday, April 14th at 9:52PM EST (link)

If we can’t arm the American-flagged ships themselves, we build a fleet of PT-style boats to escort every American-flagged ship that’s within 400 miles of the coast of somalia. Anything that comes within 2x the range of an RPG from an American merchant vessel in pirate-prone seas gets blown out of the water, quickly and efficiently. The shippers themselves would probably rather pay the US navy for the escort service than pay the increased insurance and eventual ransoms for thier ships. We should offer this service to every other country that helped us in Iraq. The rest can go pound sand.

If only! Most of the reports I’ve been reading say that the shipping companies are happier to pay the ransoms. It sets it up as a regular order of business. They pay the insurance companies, the insurance companies pay the ransom, the ships don’t get seriously damaged and trade more or less continues. It all reminds me of the original Trek episode A Taste of Armageddon and right now I think it’s time to start blowing up some some disintegration chambers.

jimmuy8 (Diary) Tuesday, April 14th at 9:33PM EST (link)

If you kill one pirate another will take his place. these latest attacks prove that. After all, it is we who are invading their waters, transporting goods across their sovereign territory uninvited–we are the invaders, what do we expect?

I mean, if Somalia was running drugs and cargo off the coast of Texas without permission you can bet every red-neck, gun-totting Texan would be paddling out to protect their home.

By killing those freedom fighters without a UN resolution, without a declaration of war, Obama is nothing but an international war criminal.

So we are like tresspassers to them? nt

Sovereign Territory?

JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Tuesday, April 14th at 9:56PM EST (link)

Somalia is a non-nation. It’s basically a piece of the African continent where there is no country, no government, no “sovereign” power.

I think you mean territorial waters. Assuming Somalia was an actual nation with a functioning government, their territorial waters would extend 12 nautical miles, by international law.

Rush’s point about Mr. Goldberg’s piece was it was unnecessary at minimum and harmful beyond that as it helps the cause of ‘oh well, Obama’s not so bad after all.’ As one of the audio clips played in the show indicated, Obama linked his so-called Pirates success to proof that his economic plan would succeed as well. (Rush’s point). The left controls public opinion by relentlessly attacking the masses. Over time with headlines and snippets they change minds. To me we are in the fight of our life in a rickety life raft. I don’t need one more person taking water on the raft by making themselves the news story which is what Mr. Goldberg did. Obama is a giant loss for us period. When you’re drowning why debate if he was half right on one media creation? National media can write want they want to further the career they desire.
