‘Community Service and You: a filmstrip in seventeen parts.’

Does that bring back memories?

Katherine Miller of Vandy Right reacts to the news that the Fairfax County public school system will mandate 40 hours a semester of community service prior to graduation, starting next year:

Now, last week, I actually argued to someone that I was comfortable with individual schools rather than the federal government mandating students complete community service to graduate. Bu, after considering this more, I’m having a Come to Jesus moment: The government, and by extension the schools, need not be in the business of mandating community service. Let me break it down for you.

And she proceeds to do so. I’ll just give you her bullet points: Katherine explores each one more thoroughly.

  1. Volunteering is…voluntary.
  2. This is the parents’ responsibility.
  3. Remember how lame social or community education was?
  4. Teenagers lie.

#1 & #2 are fairly… well, they should be obvious arguments, but given the way that most people – including the ones running this country at the moment – seem to think that you can legislate people into civic awareness, perhaps they aren’t. So, let’s recap: people volunteer for things out of a sense of awareness – whether it’s awareness of the needs of others, or themselves (volunteerism as a path to self-improvement is a common theme in our culture). People fulfill an obligation to service out of a sense of accommodation. Doing it is easier than not doing it (and you’re going to get resentment either way). And while it’s necessary to sometimes motivate adolescents, the government shouldn’t be in that business. Parents should be. If the parents don’t want to be on the hook for the job, they shouldn’t have kids.

But it’s #3 & #4 that resonate – and I should have thought of either of those in the first place. It’s true: this is civics, and civics is not fun, thank God. Civics will never be fun. If it was fun, we wouldn’t have to nag, bribe, cajole, or threaten people into doing it in the first place. So when they get forced to do it… I believe that the term is “towering resentment.” To which I can only reply: blame the President. It’s his idea*.

And, lastly, I will go even further than Katherine Miller: set this program up, and the levels of forgery involved will be so high, and so prevalent, that it will be able to support the services of semi-professionals in the school body itself. No, I’m not joking. Remember high school? Remember the kids that could “touch up” your report card? The ones that could fill out your biology log books in five minutes? The ones that wrote college entrance essays? None of those kids took classes, you know: they just had a knack for document manipulation and a little social engineering, and their peers were happy to pay for the results. And if you think that the administrators are going to really care, well, that’s nice.

So, all in all, I do have to wonder if this program has been thought all the way through.

Moe Lane

*And before we hear about how this administration is going to motivate high school students to enthusiastically volunteer, I should note that this is the same administration that wasn’t able to motivate more than 214 thousand people out of 13 million to sign off on its budget proposal – and that’s charitably assuming that all of the 100 thousand signatures that came from street canvassing were on that legendary Obama List anyway. Or that they all represent people who actually exist.

Hows about schools concern themselves with an education that

Community service and the draft

Loren Heal (Diary) Sunday, April 5th at 11:59PM EST (link)

Probably everyone who has served in the volunteer military, and emerged changed by that service, has had the thought that everyone ought to do it. That everyone ought to be _made_ to do it.

But just as the decision to serve one’s country is completely different than the decision not to evade the draft, so too is the spirit of service needed to volunteer for public service generally.

Mandatory community service is yet another example of liberals conflating cause and effect. Doing community service doesn’t imbue a sense of public spirit in a person, rather, public spirit leads to volunteerism, which then may prove to be positive.

Brought this wonderful concept to Maryland. I am opposed to it today as much as I was when it was voted in.

My son is a high school junior. He has accrued about 4X the amount of hours required by the state for graduation (75, if I’m not mistaken). However, he would have logged community service hours anyway, because it is the RIGHT THING TO DO, as a caring member of the community, NOT as a state mandate.

His father and I raised him with a solid set of values and respect for others. I volunteered in high school at a local hospital, and in my church community. My son has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity (I know, I know…), a community recreation center, his church, at the polling sites to assist the disabled, at a senior citizen center, and refurbishing a wetland. BECAUSE IT’S WHAT A GOOD CITIZEN DOES!

I hate the fact that the state mandates this. I can picture nothing worse than an adult volunteer having to monitor a surly, unwilling teen-ager whose only reason for being there is to collect a signature.

This is wrong on SO MANY levels.

Sorry for the rant, folks. This just cheeses me off…..

forgot one thing...

What about students who give up paying jobs for this

katesmith (Diary) Monday, April 6th at 12:00AM EST (link)

I don’t see mention the students will be paid for the 40 hours. Many high school students have jobs after school because they need the money. Either to help with current expenses or to save for college. Employers might avoid hiring students in favor of someone who can work steadily.

they have been doing this for a while

mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, April 6th at 12:10AM EST (link)

with state funded scholarships to state colleges. It may be a merit/academic scholarships but they require x hours of community service during high school.

they also have school to work programs

which is more like put these kids in a dead end job and provide cheap labor for local employers for high school credit.

It is the private schools in Knoxville that have community service requirements...

Praying (Diary) Monday, April 6th at 1:54PM EST (link)

Especially the parochial or Christian schools. My kids were generally required to do 30 hours of community service (they also participated in a social service organization that required an additional 50 hours per year). The difference here is that the KIDS had a CHOICE in what organization or activity they volunteered for. Usually part of the volunteer work was done as a class, during the day, such as on a school retreat. The rest of it was up to them to arrange and schedule. I am not opposed to requiring volunteer community service. I am opposed to tying it to “stipends” or forcing kids to do a particular task that may not agree with our family values or that interferes with other activities (such as sports). My kids swim. A lot. 23 or so hours a week. They leave the house at 5 am and get home at 8 pm, eat, and then start homework. It is what they love – a passion, a gift. Any volunteer work is completed on weekends or during the summer. And yes, they work, too. Summer jobs – life guarding or ass’t swim coach – pays the car insurance and not much else. Would this work for everyone? No. Would it be as positive an experience being run by a government funded public school? I doubt it. But volunteering, in and of its self, is really not a bad thing. The key there is voluntary. Indeed, the government need not be involved in this.

No!!!11!1!!1!1! The Bilderbergers are coming

I hope that they succeed beyond their wildest dreams, and that the program proves to be a miserable failure. Why? Because I’d rather have our money wasted than have it pave the way for other state-mandated “good ideas”. As Serenity’s captain said, I aim to misbehave.

Teens have inventive ways to get even

Teens in Maryland have managed to get revenge in very creative ways. Fairfax County, be verry afraid of the unintended consequences.

An unrelated example of their creativity…
