To sum up the New York Times article: New York Democrats in the Assembly have come to an agreement with New York Democrats in the Senate and the New York Democrat in the Governor’s office to raise state taxes on all incomes above $300,000/year. This is felt to be the best way to handle the looming 3.2 billion deficit in taxes from the previous projected budget – as opposed to, say, spending 3.2 billion less next year. Meanwhile, Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver went to some trouble to make certain that this tax plan did not include tax offsets for homeowners; the suggestion that this is for partisan political purposes is, of course, scurrilous. So, no doubt, is the observation that this tax bump is going to be squarely hitting small businesses at the same time that some of them are going to get hit on their federal tax burden as well.
And, of course, it is completely unfair to point out that New York’s economy is critically dependent on the collection of talent, capital, and organization that was already in poor financial health even before this new development. I am given to understand that the inhabitants of Wall Street tend Democratic in both contributions and elections. It’ll be interesting to see how many times they can be kicked before there’s a general reassessment of that policy. Presumably it won’t happen right way, if only because it takes time for people to admit to themselves that they actually do have class interests, and they’re not voting them; but patience is a virtue.
As for the rest of New York, I ask what I asked the Washingtonians earlier: how’s one-party rule working out for you guys?

Besides, true-believin’ “environmentalists” like these people ought not be using coal-generated hot water to wash dishes anyway. They should use only fully organic dishes and utensils made of dried dung to support “sustainable agriculture.”
Come to think of it, if they would just get FULLY “back to nature” and go out and graze the grass themselves, think of all the carbon used to produce and ship foodstuffs that could be saved!
It would really lower their carbon hoof-prints that way, even more than sipping “fair trade” low-fat soy mocha lattes from Starbucks.

As long as state and local taxes are deductible from federal taxable income, taxpayers in lower tax states are subsidizing the prolific spending and taxing in the high tax (“dark blue”) states.
They’re welcome to tax themselves to death if they want to, I just don’t want to have to pay for their folly when I have no vote in their state.

The destruction of New York State
fisk2521 Sunday, March 29th at 4:20PM EST (link)Moved back to upstate NY a few years ago – - grew up here and love the finger Lakes area. It has been economically depressed for years in upstate…. industries left, population decreasing and the young leave to find better places to raise their children. This is in my opinion because of the liberals in Albany who have controlled and taxed this state to death. It is a sin to see the beauty of this state and understand the terrible impact Sheldon Silver and his mob have had in it’s rapid decline with absolutely no thought to the people they are injuring. Seems like that’s the Democrat’s mode of operating….. lose your job – - too bad – - we have to save the spotted owl…. go green regardless of who it injurs or destroys.
Please don’t forget the increased energy taxes that are coming ….. this on top of Cap and Trade should just about finish the job here. Many don’t believe that Obama’s promise to raise individual energy costs by $1400 a year….. this in his rapid actions to ‘take advantage of a crisis’. Many people in NY like all over the US don’t know what’s happening until the bills show up in their mailbox and then wonder what the hell happened.
We’re also gratified to know that Indian “nations” are in the process of suing for “their lands” back – - with the help of the Department of Interior (using your tax money). These suits are groundless, but no mind – - they are ALL victims – - even if they did actually sell their lands. With Obama in office and the tax free Indians free to contribute without fear of breaking ANY laws, why the hell not…. reservations for everyone …… land taken from the tax rolls and “taken into trust” by the federal controllers.
It fits right in with the new approach that Obama is taking to ‘change’

XavierC Sunday, March 29th at 5:13PM EST (link)… if it was a matter of tax and fiscal policy.
Unfortunately, it comes as a package deal with anti-immigrant attitudes (I happen to be brown-skinned), denial of science (witness last night’s posts on Earth Hour), and a host of other relatively inflexible positions.
XavierC: "anti-immigrant?" Man ... where do you idiots get this stuff?
Martin Knight (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 5:36PM EST (link)I mean why is it impossible for so many people with IQs above room temperature to distinguish between being anti-immigrant and anti-illegal immigration?
In other words, who the hell told you that Republicans give rat’s hairy @$$ what color your skin is? Are you an American? Are you in America legally? If the answer to any one of these questions is yes, then it doesn’t matter if the color of your skin is green with pink polka-dots.
And as for science, we’re not apologizing for believing that skepticism still has a role to play in science – we believe any branch of scientific inquiry that launches demonization campaigns against skeptics is no longer scientific. Republicans are not going apologize for believing that Al Gore is not a scientist.
Here’s some advice you stupid sheep-brained idiot (and I mean this in the most affectionate way) – put down the damn New York Times. Stop listening to fools who have never met a Republican or social conservative in their lives tell you what we think, how we think and the way we live.
Why don’t you find out for yourself? Go talk to a Republican with an open mind and find out what’s real and what’s not. No, we do not wish to send homosexual individuals to concentration camps. No, we do not want all non-Christians to have their citizenship revoked. No, we do not want to install cameras in people’s bedrooms to make sure they’re doing “it” right. No, we do not pour toxic chemicals into lakes and rivers for fun. No, we do not want to bring back slavery. No …
In other words, stop assuming you know a damn thing about Republicans. It’s obvious you’ve never met one, spoken to one or perhaps even seen one before.
Get that done first before trying to enlighten us with the “benefit” of your ignorance.

As a brown-skinned Republican...
digitalhap (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 5:58PM EST (link)… I am quite amused at your lack of understanding regarding Republican positions. Not only am I brown-skinned, but my last name is Aziz. My parents came here from Bangladesh (East Pakistan), a Muslim country. I was born in Schenectady, NY, and I grew up in the suburbs of DC. From my first-hand experience, I can assure you there are no anti-immigration policies advocated by Republicans. Anti-ILLEGAL-immigration is a different matter entirely. As it should be.
Denial of science is always a curious statement coming from “the debate is over” liberals and Democrats. When a group of people use the word “consensus” in a statement regarding science, I know where the actual denial is. By the way, the make-up of my brown-skinned family looks like this:
Father – mechanical engineer
me (oldest son) – computer scientist
sister #1 – physicist
sister #2 – electrical engineer
As for the “host of other relatively inflexible positions”; that’s a blanket statement. There are some things with which good people must not compromise, so many of those “inflexible” positions are likely quite appropriate.

Liberals fleeing areas due to Failed Liberal (read: Progressive – Socialism/Communism American style) Policies…. That would be my first reaction… Let them suffer and maybe, just maybe, some of them will wake up!!! HOWEVER… We know the consequence of these things…
And still, they keep moving and WARPING the Electorals Map!!!!!
Michiganders in the S.E. part of the State have seen the surrounding Counties (Oakland and Macomb, and still more being corrupted) of Wayne County (where Detroit, and surrounding Socialist communities reside) decay from being infested and infected by Socialists… er… Liberals/Progressives…. escaping the Policies and the Consequences of those Policies…. As Liberals flee, the morons still take their (level of stupidity and inability to have learned from their Voting mistakes) with them to corrupt the Governments of their new locales… Those Counties now help over-ride the will (and common-sense) of the rest of the State of Michigan in voting Socialist Governor (Canadian Born, they had to import an even more Leftist/Communist – the ones they had been running were apparently ‘too reasonable’) Jennifer Granholm and our Moronic Lefty Senators (Levin/Stabenow)…
The folks in States surrounding CA have seen this same stupidity on the State level… As CA gets more and more Ridiculous/Pathetic in its Socialistic TAX/SPEND Policies some folks pick up and move (unfortunately) taking their bad attitudes and Voting behaviors with them infecting, infesting, corrupting, and DESTROYING, your States politics…. giving us todays warped Electoral College Maps (Red/Blue States) on Presidential nights (close the last couple and spilled over the top to give us Oblahblah this time)….
The Mid-West has faced the same fate… With people fleeing IL and MI to Red/Purple States (Conservative positive growth States)…. Shading them evermore closer and closer (now over the top in many) to the BLUE!!!

Many recognize this effect (lots of RS comments regarding it): Exporting Blue-ism
JLenardDetroit (Diary) Tuesday, March 31st at 3:32PM EST (link)(Exporting Blue-ism, as discussed in comment above) During the last Election people of the South-East were lamenting the numbers of Liberals from the North-East that have flooded their areas and brought the Stupidity (IMNSHO) of their voting habits/beliefs with them….
People in States all around the West complain about those coming out of CA bringing their Liberal mindsets and voting habits with them….
This has been an issue in the Mid-West for a long time with the Brain-dead, always to be and vote Democrat, fools influenced by the Chicago-area Thug Politics we’ve often discussed here moving into IL’s surrounding States… some of the North-Easterners flooding into PA, or through and into OH, changing its shade more and more….
Detroit Socialist and Thug mentality, like Chicago, has been exported across the country… As the Automotive industry declined many LIBERALS employed in those Factories (and what-not) have moved into the surrounding counties within MI changing them from Red to Blue. Likewise, many of them have left the State seeking other Automotive related employment out-of-State or other opportunities in general (just as was the case that brought a huge influx of people from around the country as the Auto-Industry ballooned in its growth years – now just reversed flow)…. They keep their UNION mentality, that everyone owes them more and more for the same work (that in many cases, a trained-monkey could do)….
I do NOT doubt that Conservatives have moved on also, but I contend many Conservatives with higher skill-sets can/do often find even greater employment (through their core value and understanding that we compete for jobs) in their own areas displacing the less-motivated who just turn to their Union to find them some other automatic-hire job…. Also, Conservatives can often seek to create their own businesses (often in the area they already live) to fill a need. We prefer to be our own Boss and to have a company that turns around and creates jobs for others, while most Liberals just want the safe paycheck with someone else to always worry about it and for the Liberal someone else always to be blamed when things aren’t good for the Liberal!!!

Not to be disagreeable, nor even to disagree, but

It may not have been your intent, but the direct implication here is that the Libs will leave and the Conservatives will be left behind to prosper. If so, it could mean that what was blue would become redder as the red states become bluer. The actual facts are unclear.
Logically, if there are more of us than of them, we should want them spread evenly around the nation. That way, we’d control everything. If not, we should want them all concentrated in as few states as possible.
In some respects, it isn’t a question of Conservative vs. Liberal or Republican vs. Democrat. It is Takers vs. Producers. There are certainly plenty of voters who have abandoned all ethics and decided to vote for the guys who will take from producers and give to them. Many of them haven’t considered what will happen when THEY are the ones who HAVE, and their competitors (in the broadest sense) have decided to take from THEM.
Generally, people of all kinds go where the jobs and wealth are. Problems sprout when it happens too fast and no assimilation into the cultural ethic that created the jobs and wealth has time to occur, creating more takers than the producers can support. It can happen whether the newly immigrated are legal or not.
