Link to a lovely peace-loving religion news story.
Kenny Solomon (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 9:23PM EST (link)Steel yourself for this one………………..
India……. 8-year-old girl celebrating the day of Holi is shot by a Muslim
A few hundred kids and adults were ‘spraying colors’ in a joyous Hindu celebration. So of course, a Muslim “man” shot one of the kids for spraying him.
At least some of the crowd kicked his ass then turned him over to the cops.
Neither God nor any legitimate religion with human beings as members would remotely allow and laud the existence of an entire group of “people” who would do this to a child (or anyone else for that matter).

Northern Ireland, August 2001
Next93 (Diary) Sunday, March 15th at 1:50AM EST (link)As I recall, there was a news story just before 9/11 about some SOB who lobbed a bomb at a group of indigenous Irish (or as our press likes to state it, Catholic) little girls attempting to attend a schoold dominated by English-descended kids (read: Protestants). It all sounded very similar to our Little Rock High situation back in the 50′s.
So it’s not correct (as in “wrong”, not as in “politically offensive”) to say that animals like this one in India don’t happen in other religions.
Big difference between the east and the west: all of the Christian world recoiled in disgust after the bombing in Northern Ireland.
Compare and contrast that to the dancing in the streets throughout the Muslim world on 9/11.

DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 10:35PM EST (link)Nothing like going around and killing religious zealots during the time of the Crusades or maybe lighting up some zombies to get all of that anger out of the system. Thirty something years old and I am playing video games on a Saturday night instead of drinking some beer with my buddies or spending the night with the wife. Oh, BTW the wife is playing PS3′s RS5 with me as the female heroine in Co-op play. Gee whiz, I have such a swell wife and my kids are going to love. Well, not so much with playing the Mature games until they are 18. Anyway, I am happy tonight to see that there is an open thread just in case I need to go over the deep end and rant and rave about some Global Warming Enthusiast. Anyway, back to RS5 and some zombie killing.
I have a question to all...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 11:18PM EST (link)I have two people, both who make $90,000 per year. Person A bought a luxury 3000 sq. ft. single family home in 2006 for $525,000 with no down payment, 2 trust 80:20 loan. Person B bought the 1900 sq ft. townhouse in 2008 for $300,000 with 5% down and 95% mortgage with a for 30 year fixed interest loan. It is 2009 and Person A has $520,000 of principle left on his mortgage and Person B has $282,000 left of principle on his loan.
Now both Person A and Person B both work at the same company doing the same thing, working as electrical engineers. Both were laid off two months ago, the one that bought the $525,000 house has nothing left in savings and Person B has enough savings to pay the mortgage for the next 5 months. Person A will not be able to afford his mortgage payment next month and will most likely default on his mortgage in the next three months. Person A is facing foreclosure and Person B has some time before he will be in the same boat.
My question is the following, how is the Government going to justify stepping in on both loans to allow Person A to stay in his luxury single family home while the person that lived with in his means gets bailed out only after he completely depletes his savings and most likely retirement to stay in his smaller less luxurious home. Please help me here, Person B the next time he buys his home might want to buy much more than he can afford so that he can have the luxury house and be in the same predicament as Person A.
I am just saying. I could think of many scenarios like the one above and come up with situations where the person in the large house makes out after failure better than the guy who prepared for such inevitabilities.
Don't think you're asking the correct question
civil truth (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 11:40PM EST (link)If you frame the question wrong, you can’t expect to get a meaningful question.
Short answer: Government doesn’t have to justify anything it does, just as a man with a gun doesn’t have to justify how he treats someone unarmed. (Just another variant of Life isn’t fair; get over it.)
Alternatively…
The basic question you’re really asking here is to define the guiding principles for our life choices.
Most religious people would point to a God-inspired code of conduct/ethics to direct their decision making. Those who don’t subscribe to religions would define a code that comes from within them.
In any case, nobody can sensibly look at the actions of others to define one’s principles for life. And especially not derive them from anticipating irrational actions by others.
Now tactics: that is a different matter, but in that domain, ethical principles are secondary, acting to set boundaries; getting the job done is central.
The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis
http://www.gmsplace.com/
I was just trying to demonstrate absurdity...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 11:53PM EST (link)of Government bailing out mortgages directly, judges reset loans and principle. oh, the responsible person (i.e. me, hypothetically) vs the irresponsible person (i.e. friend, hypothetically since none of this happened yet), when is Government who claims to be fair going to justify using money for the means of proping up one over the other. I know the whole Government thing is in control to make whatever decision they want but to demonstrate the blatant reward of irresponsibility vs. reward of responsibility can only mean devasting results and choices in the future. That is all.
Not the government's job
Next93 (Diary) Sunday, March 15th at 2:08AM EST (link)As it happens, I’m pretty much in the situation that person B is in. I’m an electrical engineer who was laid off last month (however, since I hanen’t received a paycheck since mid-January and will probably NEVER see my back pay, I guess you could say I’ve been unemployed for 3 months). We’re looking at loosing the house in four or five months if I don’t find a job that pays enough. .
So, speaking as person B, my opinion is that even though the situation totally sucks, it’s NOT the government’s job to bail me out, reset my principal, or get involved in any way. I don’t know when we reached a point in our thinking that the government should come in and rectify every situation that sucks, but it’s the height of stupidity. There’s nothing in the constitution that says that I have a right to have the government solve my problems for me, or that I have an obligation to pay for the government solving other people’s problems.
I have a lot more faith in my ability to deal with it on my own than I have in the government. Our current president said on the campaign trail that “The American people deserve a government that has a better answer than ‘you’re on your own’.” I say that the American people deserve a government that says “the only mortgate you have to worry about paying is your own”.
Obama was The One in 2008.
He’ll be a BIGGER one in 2012.
Me, too!!
DefendUSA (Diary) Sunday, March 15th at 7:51AM EST (link)And that could be me…person B, as well. And, “Uncle” shouldn’t bail out anyone. At this point, I may lose my house, no matter how fiscally responsible I was. We bought our house for 330,000 back in 1999 w10% down. We did some remodeling based on then home values and are at the same 80/20 and no equity left since housing prices have drastically fallen.
I have paid every bill I have through one unemployment and now face another with a twist. We had a business fail, and have more debt. A new job cost us separation and what was left of our retirement. (That turned out to be a good thing, given the market downturn.)
Though all that I still had savings that I absolutely would not spend. Moved the family, still making the mortgage and a Rent payment since house has not sold with the savings. Now, no job. Money will be gone by the end of summer.
Is it the government’s fault? Nope. I hope I don’t lose my house. I hope we find a job, soon. If that doesn’t happen, I suppose I can file for bankruptcy. Bad things happen to good people, but the ones who knew they shouldn’t own more than they could afford should be allowed to learn a hard lesson.
*starred thought*
To be a leader is to do the uncomfortable thing. Man up, Mr. President.
Lots of Fed jobs out there, have to hold your nose,
Achance (Diary) Sunday, March 15th at 10:22AM EST (link)and spend some time on the spells and arcana they want, but they pay pretty well and you won’t work hard. Since the house is burning; keep warm!
Thinking about it myself; lots of jobs, not much work, plenty of time off, and I get to buck up my Social Security to modern wage levels. The only SS I’ve paid since ’87 was on self-employment earnings which was part-time and intermittant work. The State of Alaska doesn’t participate in SS. I’m very worried about the US nationalizing public retirement systems. Since mine is still pretty actuarily sound, they’d very much want to get their hands on it to take care of say, CA’s mess.
In Vino Veritas
I agree with you here...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Monday, March 16th at 12:21AM EST (link)it is not the Governments job of bailing out people. Government steps in and says they are helping us, when all they are really doing is messing everything up in there effort to save people from their own decisions. I feel for all that are in that position at the current time, I may be in this situation in September, my DoD contract is up and may or may not be optioned.
I am there with you, I am confident about my ability to find a new job and pay the bills in a financial pinch, that is what we do. Lose a job and have bills to pay, you will be surprised how easily we will find a way to make the bills when we need to. That includes getting rid of all the luxury and live on a very, very tight budget. And in the end we are on our own, (no Government).

Mortgage bailout questions
bk (Diary) Sunday, March 15th at 5:45AM EST (link)Let’s say that I had a $200K mortgage and got bailed out so that I only have to repay $150K.
- Does that $50K count as imputed income or whatever the right term is? If not (as I suspect), then why not?
- If 10 years from now I can sell it for $225K, do I owe back the entire first $50K and then however the other $25K gets taxed? If not (as I suspect), then why not?
- Why doesn’t this get carried back a few more levels? If 25% is knocked off, then how about going back to the construction workers who made $10 an hour and telling them they owe $2.50/hr of that back since they were really overpaid by 1/3.
Yeah yeah I know that last question is silly – in order to show how silly the whole thing is – but the first two questions seem legit.
Mortgage bailout answers.
mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, March 15th at 10:06AM EST (link)Under the law before cramdowns by Tax Courts came up, there were only two options. First, if your home was foreclosed and the lender lost money on it through resale you owed nothing to the IRS. If you did a short sale (selling for less than your loan amount) with the approval of the lender, you “could” get slapped with the equivalent of a 1099 for the shortage.
With respect to your questions today, nobody knows because there is no black letter law and no IRS regs covering the subject specifically. The question will be most likely settled in the courts over the next ten years or so. Given the tax records of the guy who is ultimately responsible for the IRS, I’m guessing there won’t be any taxes due nor will any money from the sale come back to either the government or the original lender.
That's what I'm guessing too
bk (Diary) Sunday, March 15th at 10:37AM EST (link)So all us suckers who kept paying mortgages get hit yet again, as the people who bailed on them won’t face any consequences at all.
