That’s the thing about regulating everything. You end up regulating everything. From Natural News (and won’t their server logs be confusing them today):
(NaturalNews) The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund recently reported the unveiling of the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 (H.R. 875) on Feb. 4, 2009, by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), to both the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Agriculture. Cosponsored by 36 other Congressmen, all Democrats, H.R. 875 would essentially transfer all state control over food regulation to the Food Safety Administration (FSA), a newly-established federal bureaucracy to be created within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Its implications point to the elimination of all independent, family farms as well as all organic farming operations due to overbearing federal regulations subjectively determined by FSA in favor of corporate factory farms.
Via Protein Wisdom, and Is this blog on? (here and here). See also the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund. Rep. DeLauro – and her husband Stan Greenberg – are familiar to our readers; they’re the people that gave Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel free rent for several years. Turns out that one of Greenberg’s clients is biotech giant Monsanto… and elements of the Left have been sparring with that company over genetically altered foodstuffs for over a decade. Note that Greenberg’s materially involved in that dispute, thanks to some reports that he’s written on the topic. So there’s definitely a question here over whether this legislation regulating food production has been, ah, given a certain impetus. And in case you’re wondering what’s affected by this, well, here you go:
(14) FOOD PRODUCTION FACILITY- The term ‘food production facility’ means any farm, ranch, orchard, vineyard, aquaculture facility, or confined animal-feeding operation.
As Darleen over at Protein Wisdom said, “No exclusions, no limitations. You grow it, you’re included.”
Come, I will hide nothing from you: I don’t eat organic foods. I am perfectly fine with consuming genetically altered foods. I in fact think that many of the Left-types that I linked to above there are being almost terminally silly in their dietary habits, and I will be happy to fight them over whether or not the Third World should be benefiting from current genetic agricultural research. But none of that means that we should regulate organic farmers out of business – particularly in this economy. If somebody wants to frankly overpay for a tomato that’s never been sprayed with pesticides, and I’m not required to subsidize it with my tax money, let him have the tomato. It does no harm to me, it pleases the tomato eater, and puts money in the pocket of the tomato grower.
Sounds great, doesn’t it? We call this con-ser-vat-is-m. It differs from li-ber-tar-i-an-is-m mostly in whether or not you think that you have any right to ever interfere in the transaction between the tomato grower and tomato eater; libertarians tend to default to “prove that it’s necessary” while conservatives go for “I won’t rule it out, but I’d need a reason.” You can spend many, many hours arguing which version is better – but in my opinion either one beats the liberal position, which is “Sure!” without even thinking about it. Which is what at best happened here.

PS: Yes, I actually had to be heavy-handed with that last paragraph. If the organic-food people really understood us, they would have also understood that it might not be futile to try to get our support on this issue…

skorrent1 (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 12:22PM EST (link)By the SCOTUS ruling (sorry, I don’t have the cite, but under the New Deal) that said a farmer, who grew and consumed his own grain was engaged in “interstate commerce”, and thus subject to Federal grain regulation, because if he DIDN’T grow it he MIGHT have bought some grain that MIGHT have crossed a state line. So whether you sell, give away or eat your own zucchini, or apples, or grapes, you are a part of “interstate commerce”. Doncha love it?

I just can’t help but laugh at the commentators I heard a couple of months back on NPR, who were speaking hopefully that Obama would take the forefront in promoting home-grown organic produce, even to the point of having a “victory garden” on the roof of the White House. The way they were talking, they clearly expected the Messiah the usher in a new era of localized, organic food (presumably grown at local co-operatives powered by wind and solar energy and paying a living wage to its employees). The man really is a Rorschach test for the Left. Suckers.

restrictions on growth
teresamerica (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 2:32PM EST (link)I don’t know but for some reason liberals tend to think that they have to control everything. Now, liberals want to limit opportunities for growth that our farmers need to succeed. I will eat any piece of fruit or vegetable, regardless of organic or not, so as a consumer it is not an infringement on me, but for anyone who strictly wants to keep to the oraganic way of life, it is infringing on their right to eat what foods they feel “safe” or just want to eat.

Problem
drealoth (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 11:37AM EST (link)The problem (which may not be what they are trying to address) is that currently, “organic” means whatever the heck the person selling the food wants it to mean. Coca Cola could label Diet Coke as organic, and legally, there would be no problem with this (yet for example, there are tons of restrictions on what you can call a sausage or scotch or whatever).
I am a supporter of the Canadian Green Party, but forgot to mention that when I came here to troll around.
Tons....
whatifidontwanna (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 11:41AM EST (link)That’s not even accurate. You only need to have 32% “meat” (and the definition of meat might surprise you) to call something a sausage.
Just imagine, if connective tissue, grissel, et al can be called meat, and that’s only 32% of what you’re eating, why would you EVER eat a sausage.
If you look closely, most organic products are certified by a 3rd party. Granted that 3rd party could just be a sticker producer that slaps organic on the packaging, but the FDA is by no means a shining example of truth in labeling.

OK I meant for food labels not the actual definition
mom2oneson (Diary) Saturday, March 14th at 1:06PM EST (link)I think the poster was confusing organic and natural. Natural means nothing not organic.
There is like organic and then there is some organic ingredients. Like you can buy cookies with some organic ingredients.
Organic can also be in in a name of a company but so it’s on the box but the food doesn’t have to be organic.
Almost everything I buy organic is not very processed (I don’t buy boxed organic it’s too expensive) so I don’t know how that is labeled but I buy organic grains, beans, rice and fruit and it always says certified organic by __(state) dept of ag.
Some farms are actually organic in practice but they have not gone through the USDA requirements so they can’t use that label.

I’ve been to the Nutrilite farm in Lakeview and that is a certified organic farm. No sign of pesticides anywhere and they show off their good bugs they use to keep their farm free from the bad bugs.
We are only talking about the largest supplement manufacturer in the world and my favorite product comes from that farm in CA as well probably some other farms in Mexico and Brazil.
Their product is a top of the line. I believe the Chinese were interested in duplicating their farm to production phases, cause the Chinese have been to the Nutrilite packaging plant in Buena Park. Maybe my favorite supplement will now to be made overseas with the same company. Now they are targeting organic environazis, another precious libtard support group. I wouldn’t cry too hard for them except I am troubled by the omnibus term ‘farm’. The way libtards have interpreted statutes and the Constitution since 1939, that cabbage patch in your backyard could just as easily be regulatable by this legislation as any Archer Daniels Midland agribusiness. DSmurf does bring up an interesting point. Under NAFTA, we would probably have to accept farm products from Mexico and Canada that wouldn’t be subject to this insane bill or the new Food Safety Council (and why is this council in HHS rather than Agriculture?
