Ed Morrissey is dizzy with trying to figure out which would have been worse: President Obama meaning the snub to Brown and Great Britain, or that it was apparently just a by-product of the administration’s inability to run the country. Me, I’m too busy being appalled that there are supposedly functional adults in the Democratic Party that thought that saying the below would help. Read the whole thing, but only if you think that both your head and the wall will survive the pounding that you’ll be giving the latter with the former:
Barack Obama ‘too tired’ to give proper welcome to Gordon Brown
Barack Obama’s offhand approach to Gordon Brown’s Washington visit last week came about because the president was facing exhaustion over America’s economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been “overwhelmed” by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.
Mr. President?
Man up.
You see, I don’t give a tinker’s dam if you’re feeling overwhelmed. I could care less if your stress levels are elevated. If I came across you puking in the White House toilet from the nervous tension, my only response would be to flip the switch that turns on the fan before I went to find another bathroom. That’s because you wanted this job that you now have, and if you didn’t know that it was a killing job then you should have asked somebody. 2.5 years apparent aging for every one on it; that’s the cost of being POTUS. A look at before-and-after pictures of Bill Clinton and George W Bush should have driven the message home for you. In short, you have no excuse, and my sympathy is zero.
So, instead of sending out people to whine for you about how you can’t get your head above water, ask yourself: are you prepared to hack it anyway? If you are, then shut up and do it. If you aren’t, do the country a favor and quit. God help me for saying this, but if you can’t do the job give it to Joe Biden; he can’t do the job either, but at least he’s not too proud to beg for help.
Moe Lane
PS: Find the person who made that statement to the Telegraph, thus embarrassing the country, myself, and (least importantly) yourself. If that person works for you, fire that person. Fire that person filthy.
Right after you fire this idiot:
The real views of many in Obama administration were laid bare by a State Department official involved in planning the Brown visit, who reacted with fury when questioned by The Sunday Telegraph about why the event was so low-key.
The official dismissed any notion of the special relationship, saying: “There’s nothing special about Britain. You’re just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn’t expect special treatment.” The apparent lack of attention to detail by the Obama administration is indicative of what many believe to be Mr Obama’s determination to do too much too quickly.
Because there’s going to be a post-Obama era someday, and I’d quite like there to be something to work with in it when it comes.

Speaking of Obama and schools closing in DC...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, March 7th at 11:44PM EST (link)is that Obama seems to apply his chicago logic to the rest of the country. DC, VA and MD residents very poor drivers in the snow and there is real danger for anyone out and about in these areas during snow and ice. I live in Prince William county VA, with a 4 wheel drive truck and I will stay home during snow storms unless I know there is no one else on the road. Just a week ago we had 4-6″ of snow and the Federal Government remained open. Accidents everywhere, now I do not know that the President makes the determination to close the Federal Government but if he is he most surely does not get that DC, VA and MD are not Illinois. People in this area do not have snow very often and thus do not have chains, snow tires, many 4 wheel drive vehicles etc. Just another example of his immaturity. Just because 52% of Americans vote for you does not mean you are somehow aware of differing situations of other areas of the country. At least Bush (from Texas) had some understanding of the capabilities of drivers in the DC area.

You brougth up a good point, most people in the South rarely had to put on their car heaters let alone drive in the snow. That is why they close schools and the Federal Government in this area, they know they risk the children in the buses, they understand that kids at home also means that maybe the parents should be home too.
Lastly, he is arrogant that is exactly it. He was bragging of sort that he knows how to drive in the snow. Look at me, I braved the weather of Chicago I am special revere me.

At that point, I wrapped my head in Duct Tape, then I got on the phone with my attorney and she went ballistic. No result of her conversation with Medicaid yet, but we’ll see what floats soon enough.
This morning I went to see my parents again, then I had a bit of fun for almost 2 hours driving around trying to track down a friend on vacation here who got lost in his non-GPS rental car after taking the wrong exit from Florida’s Turnpike. He had zero idea of where he was and proved it by confusing me in my own county !
After that, I went to the range because I had to blow off some steam and also to “zero” a new scope on one of my rifles, do the same with a light/laser package for one of my pistols and then it was on to some move-and-fire CQC exercises.
I was tempted to stay there and just keep firing at targets until it was dark, but I wanted to see the Truck Race…….. that I forgot was on already……..I got to a TV with 10 laps to go…….. happy happy joy joy.
So I did what I shouldn’t have to do…. I went back to the house and gathered everything from Mom’s Medicaid application package, made copies and then got on the phone to the attorney and had her meet me to re-certify the whole thing that took 3 months of solid work to get together in the first place.

It ain't going to happen...
lonebeagle Sunday, March 8th at 3:14PM EST (link)Obama is a lightweight and he’s completely out of his league. He’s never had to do anything in his life that required taking real responsibility. He’s never been in the military and led men–he’s never had to inspire people to perform through adversity.
In other words, he’s clueless….
This is why executive experience is important.
Steve Maley (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 9:21AM EST (link)Even the governor of one of the less populated states (Alaska? Louisiana?) knows how to juggle executive priorities. Maybe Jimmy Carter proved my premise flawed, but you get the point.
The job of a US Senator is summed up in 3 words: bloviating second-guesser. That’s Biden to a T. Obama, God bless him, was still training for that.
It’s Change we (collectively) wanted, it’s Change we got. I felt 100x more comfortable with Ronald Reagan at the helm; even if he was dozing in cabinet meetings, he had delegated to competent grownups.
It’s going to be a long 4 years.

Not only has the man never had a real job,
Achance (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 9:31AM EST (link)he never got one of the fake jobs on merit. He was exactly as Biden described him and that’s what was being hired. I’ve worked with a lot of AA hires and token appointees. What’s really tragic is that they think they’re actually doing the job and are oblivious to the fact that somebody else is doing the job they’re paid to do and all they do is go out and look “clean and articulate” and gladhand. And I guess what is even more tragic is that the fact of people like this makes everyone look askance at any minority in a job. The anti-AA Blacks and others are totally right about what it has done to perceptions of Blacks in the workplace.

You'e cold, Achance...
Steve Maley (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 10:12AM EST (link)…but dead on with this.
The phenomenon is not limited to AA hires, though.
I worked with an engineer early in my career who was the white good-ol’boy (as in Randy Newman’s Rednecks*) counterpart of Obama. Firm handshake, winning smile, and a deep, resonant, confident voice.
But nobody home upstairs.
I have followed this guy’s career trajectory: from engineering into a PR/lobbying job with my previous employer, then involuntarily out the door. As he has gone on to other companies (rarely at his own choice), each position has a half-life as predictable as Carbon-14. He lasts about 18 months in each job. By then, the afterglow of the job interview, the press releases of his hiring and the honeymoon period in the VP chair has worn off, and the employer has a chance to feel regret for ceding any executive authority at all to the guy.
Financially, he’s done way better than me, I’m sure. The rising tide in the energy business meant mergers, fat severance pay, buyout packages, etc.
Obama’s much the same, but since he’s never had a real job that mattered, mistakes have never caught up with him. He has charisma, the ability to make people remember meeting him, talking to him superficially & remembering the experience in a positive way.
But I remember this about my guy: he said the same thing to my wife every single time they met, over nine years of working together. “Hi, my name’s (Ralph). I don’t believe we’ve met.”

The winning smile, the “executive” hair, the quick soundbite quip that doesn’t make sense once you have time to think about it. Yeah, let’s nominate him – or her, there’s a female version too, usually selling real estate. One of my favorite sayings about that kind of person in the political incarnations is, “He’s a real nice guy until you get to know him.”

Good question, GC
Achance (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 11:10AM EST (link)Guess she’s back to being the Un-Republican. Somebody must have told her that Republicans liked the other nominee. Seriously, it’s not like she and hers talk to me much, but what I hear is it is about Mat-Su Valley politics and some enmity between her or one of her insiders and the other guy, possibly about the coal bed methane issue in the Valley but that is rumor. The Mat Valley casts itself as the bastion of conservatism, but when the coal bed methane projects started, they went NIMBY as well as anybody in California could have. Can’t say that J. Mathews was a conservative, nobody on our Court really is, but he was a lot more conservative than this woman seems to be. Knowles appointed her to the Superior Court.
Our system really doesn’t give the governor good choices. We have a citizen/bar Judicial Council who sends a list of nominees to the Governor who must choose from those nominees. Gov. Murkowski tried to force them to at least give him all the applicants to choose from but lost, so it would take a Constitutional Amendment to change it. Until then, the bar will make sure that the courts here stay pretty liberal.

IJB Sunday, March 8th at 2:28PM EST (link)I too was very disturbed by this move of hers, and I think it’s something that all of us around here need to talk about.

I'd support Gov. Palin over any Democrat
Achance (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 4:10PM EST (link)and practically any Republican over Sarah Palin for any statewide office. Lisa Murkowski has always been more or less pro-choice and she’s been open about that here and pretty handily won both her primary against a strong pro-life candidate and the general against a very strong pro-choice candidate. That settles it for me on that issue, but frankly I’m not a one-issue type voter.
In Vino Veritas
thanks Achance. Lisa made my vile list but not my more vile list.
pilgrim (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 6:04PM EST (link)Of the incumbent Senators whose term expires in 2010 only Lisa Murkowski and Evan Bayh were unable to join Barbara Boxer and And Arlen Specter in the “a government should have the power to force abortion and sterilization in order to control population” political position held by Senators in my more vile list. That was a bridge too far for Evan and Lisa.
pilgrim she represents what
AKSteveB (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 7:10PM EST (link)Alaskans tend to favor, more than Gov. Palin. This state leans a lot more towards libertarian than truly conservative.
Hell is other people – Sartre
except AKSteveB Lisa's vote is not a libertarian one.
pilgrim (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 7:50PM EST (link)The President’s decision will shift U.S. funding from true family planning programs to programs that provide and promote abortion with little or no regard for the sovereignty of democratic nations that oppose abortion as a method of family planning.
A libertarian would vote in favor of an amendment to undo the President’s decision because for a libertarian sovereignty of another nation will be of high regard. A libertarian would rather leave another country alone than to impose programs on them that they oppose.
I'd characterize Alaska as more libertine
Achance (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 8:17PM EST (link)than libertarian, though there are lots of libertarians here, or at least people who’ll tell you they’re libertarians. Some of them could actually articulate something about what a libertarian is. There is a strong pro-life element here, but the State has a lot more bars than churches and more people take drugs than take communion. What marks Alaska as a “conservative” state and keeps it more or less Red is an aversion to the nanny state and to greenies.

Here is another Alaskan opinion...
shirk Sunday, March 8th at 6:10PM EST (link)I am a conservative Alaskan from Fairbanks. We like Gov. Palin just fine up here. Please read the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner article from Saturday on the supreme court nomination or the Conservatives4Palin blog to get a clear picture of what went on and who these two judges are. Gov. Palin had two choices: buck the Alaska constitution or choose the more constitution-adhering judge. Palin requested information more “sweeping” in scope than any other governor has requested on these judges and went with the judge that was the most qualified. An Alaskan lawyer involved in pro-life organizations has said that Judge Christen is “thoughtful, fair, and adheres to the law.” (Daily News-Miner) The balance on the court ends up a wash if Christen votes with more liberal judges on pro-life issues. Achance, I hope we can have good discussions about Alaskan politics: the landscape looks different from the Interior, and I want to provide a view “from the North” while still learning about the inner-workings of Juneau (which is way too far away for our liking).
It's no farther from JNU to FAI than from FAI to JNU.
Achance (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 6:57PM EST (link)Just a matter of perspective. Anyway, we can all wallow in economic depression when ANC sucks the life out of the rest of the State.

Glad to see another Alaskan here.
AKSteveB (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 7:06PM EST (link)I’m not a fan of the Governor but it is good to have a local person here who is. I think a lot of the folks here, both those who think she is the next incarnation of Reagan and those who think she is a character out of Deliverance don’t really get what our local issues with her are.
Hell is other people – Sartre
Here's the Fairbanks News-Miner Op-Ed about Palin's SC pick.
Achance (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 6:49PM EST (link)The News-Miner and the Ketchikan paper are the only ones worth reading in Alaska and I generally trust the News-Miner. No Republican in Alaska could nominate somebody associated with Trustees for Alaska to the SC or to anything else. It is a rabid Greenie group. So, I don’t have any quarrel with her on the pick. My usually reiable sources were more or less right with their rumors anyway; had something to do with greenie/energy stuff.
In Vino Veritas
I did read that, given the two best choices, that Palin made the right choice
Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 6:23PM EST (link)will try and find the link later
The alternative choice was a radical anti-oil/energy idealogue who could do harm on the court, whereas the palin pick is a conservative down the line except on abortion, an issue the states have little power over.

janis (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 9:50AM EST (link)is shaping up the way it is. Just give every thug dictator and tyrant out there the freedom from repercussions from us and Voila! No foreign policy problems. Obama doesn’t have to worry about making the hard decisions of how to stop Iran from getting the nukes–just let them have the nukes. Obama doesn’t have to figure out how to make Syria quit supporting terrorism, just let them go ahead and do what “feels right to them.” Russia? Phfttt! They are big and we need to just let them alone since they are way over there and not threatening anyone but those little countries that supported Bush.
It would be WAY too exhausting to formulate and execute a consistent and principled approach to foreign policy. Kind of like how it’s way too hard to do it domestically…..
