Come, I will hide nothing from you: it would be blatantly unfair for me to mock the President for choosing Chicago bundler Louis Susman to be the ambassador to the Court of Saint James. You see, unlike a certain subset of the population I know how the game is actually played; certain ambassadorships are considered prestigious, and some aren’t. The ones that are prestigious – and I don’t think that they get much more prestigious than the one for Great Britain – are going to be filled for political reasons, which means that generally they will not be filled by a professional diplomat. The last four were, in fact: a retired admiral, a senior government official/financial guy; a financial/oil guy; and a senior government official/car dealership owner. An investment banker who raised 500 grand for the President is not particularly surprising, in other words… unless you happened to be one of those people who actually believed that line of Obama’s about how he was going to do things differently. As I didn’t and don’t, I really can’t see how I can go off on this, so I won’t.
Besides, the Brits are already doing it for me.
Barack Obama under fire for picking a crony fundraiser as his ambassador to Britain
The selection of Mr Susman, a lawyer and banker from the president’s hometown of Chicago, rather than an experienced diplomat, raises new questions about Mr Obama’s commitment to the special relationship with Britain.
American commentators denounced the selection of a rich friend to the plumb post, regarded as one of the most prestigious in the president’s gift, as worthy of a “banana republic”.
They said it was proof that Mr Obama has turned his back on his campaign pledge to end politics as usual.
Read the whole thing, particularly the bit where the Daily Telegraph compared the Susman pick to that of Rod Blagojevich’s pay-for-play scandal (the Telegraph has apparently come to its own conclusions over whether Burris bought his seat). They’re partially upset that the ambassadorship is going to somebody who isn’t a diplomat in a time when “there are fears in British government that Mr Obama is not as attached to the special relationship as his predecessors.” Yeah, that had me scratching my head, too… until I realized that the passage translated to “the Americans elected a Democrat again.” You can’t really assume foreign affairs awareness with that party, you know what I mean? Don’t get me wrong: many of them have it, but you can’t count on any one Democrat being checked out on the subject.
And, of course, the Brits are also personally disappointed that President Obama is playing politics as usual. If that sounds contradictory, hey, talk to them.

PS: The same article suggests that Obama is sending Caroline Kennedy to be the ambassador to the Vatican. Pity: I was hoping for Doug Kmiec, mostly because watching Pope Benedict XVI drag him by the ear to the nearest confessional would have officially been the Greatest Vatican YouTube EVER.

Lay Off Kmiec
jackhammer Tuesday, February 24th at 4:47AM EST (link)Kmiec is both a good republican and a good Catholic. He rightly was miffed with the evangelical republican treatment of Romney’s religion, and was fooled by the campaign of Obama, even though he did clearly distance himself from his abortion positions,a dn has been solidly pro life all of his life. I am sure the Pope would gladly welcome Kmiec as ambassador, she would be far superior to Caroline Kennedy.
"Tell me, friend"
MikeG (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 5:30AM EST (link)“When did Doug Kmiec the Wise abandon reason for madness?!!”
until he was dissapointed
jackhammer Tuesday, February 24th at 6:31AM EST (link)Moe is saying the Pope would haul him off to confession, and if you followed the controversy regarding the denial of communion for him, the church had the priest send an apology to Kmiec.
He, like many others, was fooled by the beguiling tongue of Obama…..that combined with some of the utter ignorance on the side of evangelical republicans and what he witnessed with their treatment of the Mitt Romneys very real mormon convictions made him disillusioned…and in some ways I can understand it.
Some voter groups are not lock step with one party only. Catholics seem to be “gettable” as are women on a whole. When republicans win, they get them…..if the evangelicals want to scare all of them off, then go for it.
Sorry. Republicans who endorse Far Left Democrats ...
Martin Knight (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 7:20AM EST (link)… and launch fullscale broadsides against their own party in print and broadcast don’t get to be called “good Republicans.”
You’re probably one of those people who thinks that Lincoln Chafee was a “good Republican.”
That he got fooled … and is still fooled by Obama doesn’t say much good about him. That Barack Obama is on tape promising Planned Parenthood that he’ll sign the FOCA the instant it crosses his desk allows me to question his sanity, not to mention his intelligence, his Catholicism and his Republicanism.
PS: I was a Romney supporter. Kmeic has no excuse.
question his Republicanism, but not his Catholicism
jackhammer Tuesday, February 24th at 7:39AM EST (link)The part I took objection too is that the Pope would grab Kmiec by the ear and drag him into confession.. That is neither a fair nor sound depiction of his convictions.
PS. I was more for Huckabee or Paul, because Romney has a lot of other issues that don’t make me fully believe his conservative convictions. Is he running for California Governor?
If you endorse, donate and campaign for a FOCA supporting politician ...
Martin Knight (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 8:05AM EST (link)… then your Catholicism has an asterisk and a question mark. Simple. After the positions he had taken in the past, he has proven himself to have no convictions that cannot be bent by a charismatic politician – meaning he has no convictions at all.
Second, make up your confused mind; did you or did you not write up there that Kmeic is a “good Republican”?
And as for Romney, stop echoing the “cool kids.” You certainly have no standing to snark about Romney being a “flip-flopper” when you’re here asking us to “lay off Kmeic” for far more egregious, far more recent and far more wholesale U-Turns on every aspect of public policy than Mitt Romney has ever contemplated.
PS: Why am I not surprised you’re a Paultard? How do you square Paul’s Republicanism versus the “good Republicanism” of Doug Kmeic?
Kmiec is an ignorant fool.
mbecker908 (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 7:44AM EST (link)And I mean “fool” in the biblical sense, see Proverbs. And so are you.
Anybody who can persuade themselves that Kmiec’s position on abortion re Obama is an acceptable view of the world has no clue about the fundamental issues of either life or politics.
Oh, and he shouldn't be hauled off to confession.
mbecker908 (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 7:45AM EST (link)He should be excommunicated.
If Kmiec got hauled off to confession,
GCBWI (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 1:48PM EST (link)excommunication might no longer be necessary.
Hmm. No, we won't.

jackhammer Tuesday, February 24th at 8:12AM EST (link)I did not create it for this site. I have had it for a while, and it is for communication with a lawyer. I can give you my real email.
I like msot of what I read here, and was referred here by a college friend (baseballcrank.com).
I just take exception when people overstep in reference to Catholicism. If the church has had the priest in question write Mr. Kmiec an apology letter, it is not to be expected that the Pope would “haul him by his ear to confession”…soemthing that he would more likely do with Caroline Kennedy or Nancy Pelosi, whose support of abortion has been unwavering.
The Pope and the Church are among the strongest supporters of the right to life, and have not wavered in expressing it vocally. They do not consider Kmiec to have overstepped, and I don’t claim to know the will of God better than them….
Good, that stung you.

So, why again should we ever listen to anything he has to say?
NightTwister (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 9:57AM EST (link)My 13-year-old son clearly saw Obama for the empty suit that he is. Anyone that was fooled by Obama needs to at best quietly disappear from the public spotlight and never have anything he says taken seriously again.

Did Kmiec ever publish that letter ?
Michael Dugas (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 9:34AM EST (link)I have searched and seen mention of the letter, by Kmiec himself, yet I have seen no mention to what the letter actually says. It’s far easier
for me to believe that the letter is more of a testament that the priest
didn’t use the proper channels in deciding to deny Kmiec the Eucharist than it is a letter saying that the spirit of the denial was wrong.
To me it seems apparent that Kmiec is one of those people with who it is more important to have their rope tied to the leading horse than it is to stand strong on proclaimed principles and risk being ignored by the current front runners.
If anyone has SEEN this letter of apology please link it. And I don’t mean out of context excerpts from Kmiec himself.

Makes no sense
Kyle-MI (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 2:57PM EST (link)Even from a political point of view, this makes no sense. Does anyone ever remember who the US ambassador to the UK was? Has any of these ambassadors amounted to anything after their stint was up? Why are these guys angling for this job? There are plenty of nice little Caribbean countries that I think would be the top goal for any politically connected ambassador – beautiful weather and surroundings with little responsibility. The UK is too important an ally for some political hack.
