Familiarize yourself with the background to this.

All done?

No, they probably drink tap water.

I noticed quite a few corporate references among the socialist’s.

Interesting they take part of their 10 minutes of “consensus negotiation” to count their personal property.

Nov 5th = Guy Fawkes Night ?

maddog (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 7:56AM EST (link)

I’m not sure if that is what this protesting clown meant, but Guy Fawkes Night.

Clips from Wikipedia:

It celebrates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of the 5 November, 1605 in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, were alleged to be attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London, England.

This day was celebrated in the Colonies and was called “Pope’s Day”. It was the high point of ‘anti-popery’ (in the term of the times) in New England. In the 1730s or earlier Boston’s artisans commemorated the day with a parade and performances which mocked Catholicism and the Catholic Stuart pretender. It was also the day when the youth and the lower class ruled. They went door to door collecting money from the affluent to finance feasting and drinking.[5] George Washington forbade the celebration of the day among his troops due to its anti-Catholic and pro-British purpose.

has anyone gone outside to see if they can see the Comet that is supposed to be visible this evening near the constellation leo and left of the constellation Orion? It is supposed to be one of the most bizarre comets they have seen, it orbits the sun reverse of the planets and it seems to have not visited the inner solar system before. In addition with a low power telescope you will be able to see the comet moving since it is moving across the sky at a rapid rate. I think the name is the Comet Lulin, anyway it is greenish blob with a curling tail. Check it out one night only.

Another good quote:

Let’s go back to the final sentence of TBNYU’s non-violence statement: “In our quest to construct an ideal university, we seek a university founded upon mutual respect, democracy and accountability, and we espouse methods consistent with that quest.”

You wanted mutual respect (equal treatment), democracy (judicial hearings), and accountability (responsibility for your actions). You’re getting it.

Addison (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 12:55AM EST (link)

Oh dear.

We at least sang funny songs. And only for 20 seconds. Then we left and drank vodka and played Trivial Pursuit for hours.

Here’s the thing. I like protests. I think they’re pretty American. I think they’re patriotic.

But these protests are the results of these progressive coalitions that have SO MANY goals that they end up demanding things so far outside the scope of any of the participants experience that it becomes totally ridiculous. A Monty Python sketch. You have to have some grounding in an issue and in the people you’re advocating for to carry this off.

See RedState’s favorite (<–sarcasm) Saul Alinsky for a list of ways in which this and other protests have gone horribly wrong.

And then they playact like they’re in a different time and place and world, wherein the “consensus” model achieves something in asymmetric policymaking. Their playing by Star Trek rules in a Star Wars universe, or something.

And then they start saying ridiculous things. Scripted things. Things they’ve heard. They’re acting in a movie about themselves and now cameras have become cheap enough to make the simulation of a biopic all the more real.

I know, from experience, that these students are likely some of the smartest and most creative in their class. But they’ve learned all these phrases and tactics and stereotypes that mold their actions into idiotic actions. Doomed.

Oh dear.

“I know, from experience, that these students are likely some of the smartest and most creative in their class”.

I really, honestly and sincerely hope you are entirely wrong. The entire escapade was pathetic and sad, poorly planned, poorly organized, poorly managed and internally inconsistent.

They are simply sheep, trying desperately to matter.

The actions are dumb...

Addison (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 1:08AM EST (link)

…but I’m betting these folks are pretty smart. It all depends how intelligence is channeled. How people think they should apply what they know. How they should apply what they know in figuring out what MORE they should know.

Obviously these people are dedicated. Obviously they’re able to absorb information about a subject. Obviously they want to do something.

It’s too bad that the mold they’ve poured themselves into is so antiquated and silly.

it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses

Disagree...

MetaCosm (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 1:22AM EST (link)

“Obviously these people are dedicated” — I absolutely disagree. The first ‘demand’ was that they don’t get in trouble. This shows that they were not dedicated at all. Protesters matter because they are willing to take the consequences of their actions, because they actually believe. The FIRST DEMAND was they get NOT get in trouble, which says EVERYTHING about their level of dedication. Remember the good old days, when protesters WANTED to get arrested for the cause?

“Obviously they are able to absorb information about a subject” — huh? What subject, what information? They had 13 vague demands, and they prattled on uselessly about consensus… I have no idea what information you claim they absorbed….

“Obviously they want to do something” — So? Is that an excuse for doing it poorly, or a nod to them doing something (even something so intensely stupid, it has set back their cause)? They hurt, possibly killed their cause, and now most everyone who reads about it — is laughing at them, and their cause. I think they caused more damage to their cause. Sometimes inaction is the best action.

~ MetaCosm

You make good points...

Addison (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 1:27AM EST (link)

…I think I commented on all of them in my original post.

I don’t think what they did was useful. I don’t think their perspective was wide enough. I don’t think their tactics were good enough. I don’t think that they cared as much as they thought they did.

I’m not excusing anything, I’m commenting on why what they did was silly and ineffectual and why. And how it was a waste of ambition and knowledge.

it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses

MetaCosm (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 1:53AM EST (link)

Sorry for biting your head off, I agreed with most of your first post.

One of the things that drives me crazy these days is — everyone has to be special, unique, a magical unicorn! The vast majority of people are “average”… and that is just fine.

IMHO, they are not “smart” (in any dictionary definition of the term). But, on the upside, you didn’t call them “geniuses” or claim they had “photographic memories” — both of those phrases annoy me so much more than “smart”. :)

As an undergraduate student at NYU and a longtime RedState reader, I can say that there is an extremely positive yet unintended outcome from having a student body constantly pestered by this kind of vacuous liberal shenanigans: NYU has one of the most well-organized and influential College Republicans clubs in the nation.

I anticipate (and pray) that the level of passion that has motivated the grassroots conservative movement at our school will gain momentum on a national scale given a few more months of the Obamateur administration.

On a funny note, half the students likely to be expelled are involved with the UAW, which used to represent the graduate students at NYU until its contract expired a few years ago (and they all went on strike). It indeed is a small world, afterall.

blh1976 (Diary) Tuesday, February 24th at 9:34AM EST (link)

Despite their hopes, these protesters were met as an occupying force against an innocent cafeteria. The protesters thought they would be greeted as liberators once they overtook the cafeteria, but alas, they met only freshmen sipping campus lattes and angry lunch ladies, armed with simple plastic spatulas – not the weapons of mass production they initially thought they’d find. Their occupation was not “mission accomplished”; it was a botched attempt at instilling neosocialistic ideals in a land where there was no appetite for freedom from the NYU gestapo. The cafeteria only wanted to be left to make green tea, meatloaf, and on Fridays, square pizzas with tator tots!

The protesters couldn’t understand why their freedom wasn’t greeted with shouts of cheer and glee in Greenwich. Maybe, they over thought their strategy? Maybe, they should’ve come in with more ground troops. Maybe, they should’ve had a surge strategy – maybe, something like backup forces from Berkley, Yale and Harvard? Instead, in the end of a sad, but failed attempt to liberate the corporate cafeteria, they were vanquished with little else left but to continue denying reality with their leader trying to build “consensus” while his force succumbed to rants of “F you” and “take your hands off of me!”

Tragic.
