EATAPETA is a traditional holiday started by Meryl Yourish, and much beloved by those who get annoyed by the group (quite bipartisan, by the way: I’ve seen vegans go off on PETA). The Anchoress recommends that you go with seafood for this year’s festivities, what with the entire “sea kitten” thing: Musing Minds is taking recipes. But that might be because of the Lent thing.
As always, remember: if you happen to be someone who does not eat meat – and there are a variety of valid reasons why people personally choose not to do so – but you despise PETA anyway, just throw BBQ sauce on whatever it is that you’re eating in order to symbolically reject the group.

fishing
mom2oneson (Diary) Sunday, February 22nd at 11:12AM EST (link)omg Achance my son LOVES to fish!!! Fishermen are the NICEST men. They always help us!!! The bait grosses me out but they always help us. They do everything even when he catches one they take it off the thing for him. He could fish all day. I bring a bag of paperwork to do and we sit on the fishing pier. I dont’ know what makes him so happy but he loves it!
Nice isn't the word that comes first to my mind,
Achance (Diary) Sunday, February 22nd at 12:46PM EST (link)but I do salt water trolling, a very different game and group of people from those who fish from the banks or from piers. They can all get pretty curmudegeonly when the fish are running and boats are in each other’s way, lines get crossed or cut etc. I drive the boat. My wife does most of the fishing. I help net them and hit them in the head. I also shoot the halibut when we go for halibut. Here they’re big, strong fish and it is a good bit of work to land them, especially big halibut. The boat’s cockpit is a bloody, slimy mess after a day of fishing and I, of course, have no friends when it is time to clean that mess up.
King salmon are the only salmon around this early and there aren’t a lot of them. It takes skill, luck, and especially time; you’ll burn a lot of gas to catch a king salmon. 28 inches is the minimum size you can keep and you’re ashamed to be seen with one that small but you’ll take them, they’re called shakers, if that’s all there is. If you’re good and lucky you can bring home nice thirty to forty or more pound fish. Don’t see them much bigger than the forties here because we’re so far from the open ocean. Still see them in the fifties out at Sitka and in the sixties and seventies are not uncommon on the rivers in Southcentral Alaska. The salmon were practically wiped out here in Southeast by fish traps back in Territorial days. The State has restored the numbers, but not the size of the fish here. We need to do what has been done with halibut and start catch and release on all the big fish so they have a chance to breed. The fishery management scheme is causing the fish to become smaller.

I don't think there are a LOT of valid reasons not to eat meat
kyle8 (Diary) Sunday, February 22nd at 7:52AM EST (link)there is only one valid reason, You are a Hindu or someone else who believes in reincarnation.
Then there are various other reasons like you MISTAKENLY believe that it will make you healthy, and you are a total wuss who is all worried about hurting a stupid fish or chicken. And that you have been brainwashed into giving up one of the few things that makes life worth living by fanatics like the Peta people.

Vegans stink!
Achance (Diary) Monday, February 23rd at 5:59AM EST (link)The human body really doesn’t digest some of that stuff they eat very well. Lots of the beans and sprouts and stuff are very incomplete proteins that unless eaten in the right combination with other foods simply can’t be digested, e.g, always eat corn with beans. Consequently, they are constantly emitting “greenhouse gases.”
