One week ago, our own Mark Impomeni went on the Randi Rhodes show (talking to guest hostess Nancy Skinner) on the liberal Nova M Radio network, and shut it down cold*. Today, via Hot Air, we are told that Nova M is no longer.
COINCIDENCE?
I think not.
I’m joking, of course: the real reason is that they didn’t make any money, mostly because not enough people want to listen to liberal talk radio. I know that this confuses some people, but then it’s mostly the same subset of people who thought that they could stop the GWOT – and how is that working out for you guys, these days? 17,000 more troops to Afghanistan? Well, maybe if you give even more money to the Democrats they’ll finally realize that they loved you all along – by creating ever-larger paper-mache heads of George Bush, so I’ll be nice and explain this one more time. There is nothing inherent in the medium of talk radio that makes it a killer app for conservatives. It is merely a technology that conservatives are comfortable with, from long familiarity. If liberals were likewise comfortable with this technology, they would be already using it effectively, and there would be no need to watch liberal talk radio stations fail with amusing regularity.
Fortunately, I’m likely to be ignored on this. Just like every other time that I’ve brought it up.

Major Issue with this Impending Fairness Doctrine or Truth in Radio Doctrine or something like that...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 8:22PM EST (link)is with the AM radio band full of open bandwidth what is to stop a startup liberal talk radio station from getting on the band? E.g. using 1600 or maybe FM here in VA for instance, nothing’s stopping them… Or is there? Why not just use the radio station that is already established to pay for you e.g. 630 WMAL VA/DC?MD? Just another thought to throw into the arguement.
Lastly, I really need to read up on the process of starting a new radio station especially on the AM band.
small correction to comment...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 8:48PM EST (link)in my comment I stated “E.g. using 1600 kHz” should read E.g. using 600 kHz hell depending on the power could use a number of frequencies in the AM. Check the FCC website for local allocation of the AM band in your local area, to tell your friends that are Ok with this doctrine. Why can’t a liberal talk station start its own new AM radio station and apply of a license from the FCC.
So under the fairness doctrine
bk (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 8:38PM EST (link)would some successful conservative station have to swap 12 hours of hosts with some loser liberal station? Swap Sean for Randi for example?
Seems completely fair. How can anyone argue with that? (*eyes roll*)
This why the Dems
red4ever (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 8:45PM EST (link)are so hot for the un”fairness” doctrine. They cannot compete in the marketplace of ideas so they have to stack the deck.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

The problem with liberal talk radio is...
fmaidment (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 9:23PM EST (link)…that unlike TV and newspapers, where a challenge to their ideas and thoughts must come several hours or days later by e-mail or letter, which the paper or TV are under no obligation to print, on talk radio the host must answer the question right then and there.
In other words, liberals can’t make it on Talk Radio because they are immediately challenged by people with a better understanding of economics and individual liberty than they have.
Conservatives like Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh (and Libertarians like Glenn Beck and Neal Boortz) understand economics and individual freedom. They are challenged by liberal callers and win. Liberal talk show hosts are challenged by conservative callers and lose.

Why Liberal Talk is a failure
DerKrieger (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 9:30PM EST (link)The Democrat party is a coalition of Leftist special interests who are only unified under the Democrat banner because of their opposition to Conservatism.
Liberalism lacks a core set of immutable principles that the entire Liberal base can rally around and from which all their beliefs extend.
Without a core set of principles what is there to attract a radio audience?
Can you imagine pro-amnesty supporters listening to a disposition on the need to cut back on population because of the threat of global warming? I don’t understand why these groups aren’t already at each others throats.
Liberal talk is doomed to failure simply because of the nature of the Dem party as a loose coalition joined in the common cause of opposition.
“In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.” – Thomas Jefferson
“I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.” – James Madison
Whenever the legislators endeavor to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are thereupon absolved from any further obedience.” — John Locke, 1690
I really tried ....
ddstrain (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 9:43PM EST (link)to listen to Jerry Klein when he was on WMAL. I really tried to listen to some liberal on a station out of Baltimore. I have tried to listen to liberal talk radio. It sucks. There is no other way the describe it other than … it sucks. It sucks the joy out of you. It sucks the optimism out of you. It sucks the sensibility out of sensible arguments. I just end up with something akin to a Slurpee brain freeze trying to follow the alogical arguments, ad hominem attacks and diversions.
I know a guy who has a public access show who is on the liberal side of the political spectrum. Twice in the past few years he was proud to say “It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy” when certain events transpired. Those events events were the deaths of Jesse Helms and Jerry Falwell.
How can I listen to broadcasters who find joy in the deaths of others? Maybe that is why they can’t maintain an audience.
The real reason Liberal Talk Radio fails
NickDeringer (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 10:17PM EST (link)I heard this explained some time ago and it hits the nail on the head.
Conservatives listen to conservative talk radio to hear like-mined people discuss concepts that affirm their world view. There’s no other media venue that allows conservatives to do this. Conservatives are a vast untapped market that has been ignored by the liberal media for decades.
Liberals have their world view affirmed every time they listen to CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, NPR, Hollywood movies, etc. Most of the stories and features run on CNN paint the military as bad, religious people as drooling Luddites, big business as evil, etc. Liberal talk radio is not competing with conservative talk radio, it’s competing with all those other outlets for liberal thought.
That, my brothers and sisters, is why liberal talk radio will always fail.
NickDeringer
I think the problem with Liberal Radio hosts is that they are
antisocial (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 11:23PM EST (link)always hateful. You can’t listen to a Liberal host for 30 minutes. They are thin skinned and angry people. All you get to listen is complains against everybody else. They are not for anything. They are against things. Against nature. Against liberty.
Even if you want to listen to alternative views you just can’t stand the garbage.

Liberal hosts are intellectually dishonest
NickDeringer (Diary) Wednesday, February 18th at 7:43AM EST (link)I try to listen to liberal points of view, but they seldom if ever make an honest argument. They accuse conservatives of being against immigration when in fact we are only against illegal immigration. They accuse us of being against stem cell research when in fact we are only against embryonic stem cell research. By conflating the issues that avoid dealing with the real underlying problems.
When you call them on it they resort to calling conservatives racist, sexist, homophobic, neo-natzis and end the discussion.
Liberal talk radio will only survive when it’s imposed at gun point.

Stop the Fairness Doctrine: give bail out money to some left-wing radio shows.
spainishirish (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 10:52PM EST (link)It speaks volumes, pardon the pun, that the Left’s inner fascist emerges whenever it can’t control a small sliver of media. A conservative’s first instinct when Tom or Katie or whatever moron starts babbling nonsense is to switch the channel or cut off the set. A leftist’s first response when some conservative talker does well is to have the government pull the plug on them. Therein lies the difference between the ideologies.
It's not just talk radio
Adjoran (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 11:58PM EST (link)The left tries to shut down or shout down conservative opinion anywhere. Watch them on the crosstalk television shows. See them protest conservative speakers invited to public venues or college campuses. Observe as they steal and/or deface copies of fliers announcing conservative meetings or speakers.
The only different thing about talk radio is it is the one area where they haven’t succeeded in blocking the discussion of ideas they oppose.
The left cannot tolerate ideological challenges
peg_c (Diary) Wednesday, February 18th at 7:05AM EST (link)Yes, they fail on radio. Yes, their nihilistic ideology is on every broadcast and cable network and smeared throughout every newspaper and magazine. But their goal is not to succeed with their ideology on radio, and in fact the failure of lib talk may have been part of a grander plan for their argument for the F.D. Notice Bill Press’s lame talking points to Megyn Kelly about “the money.” These people with their zillionaire enablers cry about the conservative money supporting talk radio. These lefties don’t need radio – they need to destroy radio. They need conservatives to LOSE radio as a critical medium for disseminating and propagating our principles, criticizing liberals, and keeping our movement alive. Also, the success of conservative talk radio not only proves no one wants to hear lib talk, it proves the market works. The left detests the free market and competition. They don’t believe in it, so when it works they must destroy it. The plan is to cause the shutdown of all communication companies supporting conservative talk by forcing them to broadcast money-losing lefty idiot talk. In shutting them down and consequently Rush, Mark, Sean, etc., they remove the one single venue for true, active, robust conservatism. They remove our ability to hear the unvarnished truth of the left in their own words followed by the methodical and devastating dismantling of same by some true geniuses on our side.
The left cannot tolerate (and has no good arguments against) the broadcasting of conservative ideas. They cannot tolerate criticism and challenge. What they cannot tolerate and control, they must destroy. What supports us must be taken from us. If they can remove every single venue for conservatives to spread our ideas and arguments, they will do it. And it’s not just radio; the left has been seeking methods of regulating speech on the internet for years.
But the human need and desire for freedom, freedom of speech and expression, and the ideals that so many of us hold dear, cannot be squelched, banned, legislated away, but, like water, will seep out and rise up.
Government cannot be the solution when government is the problem.
Liberalism only works when it's imposed at gun point
NickDeringer (Diary) Wednesday, February 18th at 8:49AM EST (link)Even if you look at the underlying philosophies of modern day liberals (they are not liberals in the classic sense of the word) they are based on Utopianism. They are based on a world view that ignores the basic realities of human nature. Marxism fails because it treats human beings like ants and not individuals. “When everybody owns everything, nobody takes care of anything.”
There are few liberals who are willing to have this debate. Instead you have a faker like Bill Press or Ed Schultz yelling and screaming or making fraudulent arguments that side step the real issues. The only people stopping Liberal Talk Radio are liberals.
NickDeringer
Liberalism only works when it's imposed at gun point
olsmithie (Diary) Wednesday, February 18th at 11:46PM EST (link)Which, in a nutshell, is why the first move is always to disarm the general populace.

Interesting facts about Nova M stations
seandparnell (Diary) Wednesday, February 18th at 11:28AM EST (link)One of the claims made by advocates of the “fairness doctrine” is that big corporations own most of the radio stations in the country and won’t allow left-wing talk on the air, or if they do they put it on low-wattage stations that can’t reach an audience of any notable size.
At the risk of being told to take my furs and literal interpretations to the other side of the river, I decided to check this out, looking at the stations and signal strength of everyone who carried Nova M programming, and wrote about it on my organization’s blog: http://www.campaignfreedom.org/blog/id.819/blog_detail.asp
The short version: roughly half of the stations carrying Nova M programming were 5,000 watt or better, with enough juice to cover the major metro areas they broadcast from. And of the rest, most were small-town stations where 5,000 watts would be dramatic overkill – Astoria, OR and Brattleboro, VT come to mind.
And of course, several of these stations were owned by Clear Chanell, CBS Radio, or Entercom, some of the biggest radio conglomerates in the country.
So much for the myth that left-wing talk can’t survive because they’re on weak stations.
