Because it’s 10:30, which is when the vote is supposed to end, and I’m not hearing whether he did or not.
[UPDATE]: 10:49 PM, and these guys are clearly not going to be getting thumbs out of orifices any time soon. I’m going to assume that Senator Brown will eventually be able to locate the right building (hint: it’s the one with the big dome) and vote. In the meantime, let me leave you with this thought: even if you happen to be laboring under the delusion that the GOP was noticeably more corrupt than the Democrats, surely you must be able to admit that we were at least able to get legislation passed without this level of drama.
[UPDATE]: Oh, he snuck in while I wasn’t looking. About bloody time. My last sentence remains unchanged.

6eorge, any thoughts on the direction of the Market?
DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 1:13AM EST (link)as a result of this monstrosity.
1) I'll have to work through an analysis in $ and 2) no surprise occurred today
6eorge Jetson (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 2:27AM EST (link)1) As we were discussing yesterday, we’re about to “print” a ton of new dollar claims on real assets that I dubbed TPRCs yesterday. This will dilute the real value of each single claim. Since there is no magic wand to make more real assets appear overnight, the value of the dollar will fall, both against foreign currencies (assuming their native TPRCs are stable) and against real assets.
And so when we measure the S&P or Dow in dollars, we need to realize that we’re measuring with an unstable unit. It takes more dollars to buy the a constant basket of real claims, and so the value of a constant basket of claims goes up. Same number of a company stock shares, same dollar price, what’s the problem? It’s not until we take a trip to Europe or Asia that we realize that we are much poorer. Or while my family income might be stagnant, the cost of living sure isn’t. (Ahh, the 70s, maybe disco and leisure suits will make a comeback.)
2) As to the effect of the final passage today (or the final cloture clearance for landing), I think all that a politically neutral market participant observed today was the expiration of a slim-to-none chance of its blockage.
IMO, the RedState faithful did a great job of not conceding a minute to the opposition until the final buzzer. That’s the job of we RedStaters. It’s not the job of an investor, however, to ignore the overwhelming odds that were against us winning today. (But if we keep this intensity, real conservative change is a-comin!)
Thanks, 6eorge...

logikal Saturday, February 14th at 1:14AM EST (link)“take your holier than thou somewhere else. Browns actions are unimaginable for me.”
At least you didn’t put that in the same post as the one about your grandmother, the contradiction might have destroyed the interwebs.
My mother died of ovarian cancer. My grandmother had a heart attack and then fell over, breaking her neck. We’ve all experienced loss, although, I’ll assume neither of us had legislation ramifications quite as awesome as this bill weighing on us at the same time. I am glad that you were there to share that time with your family and I am sorry for your loss. But this man had more than just an ordinary job to do. Many of those that you disagree with feel this is historically important legislation. Sometimes the needs of the many, the millions of Americans, exceed the needs of the few, even if they are your own grieving family. I am sure that this is something he was not looking forward to having to do.
Again, I’m sure you disagree on that point. Still, lets say you were this senator, and you did decide to stay home on this vote. And then some snot on the internet said, “She’ll still be dead tomorrow, why couldn’t he vote?”
Point being, I think it’s being much more “holier than thou,” to assume that you’re the authority on how one should grieve.
Larger point being, if the tables were turned and R’s were D’s and vice versa, I don’t think you’d take kindly to the lack of respect. You can say otherwise but I certainly wouldn’t believe you.
Logikal, thanks for proving my point...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 1:21AM EST (link)You illustrated my point wonderfully. You just proved the holier than thou, you just told me to step down form my soap box, you see this just went both ways. You told me how dare I judge… when you just did the same thing.
Lastly this legislation did not need to get done tonight, think for a moment and then write, what you just wrote was a waste of my time- now move on.
Provacative
logikal Saturday, February 14th at 1:31AM EST (link)But lacking substance. So is your point now that we’re both holier than thou? I guess I can live with it. That doesn’t erase my original query that has you in such a huff. Can you say with a straight face that, were the tables turned, you would react in the same way?
Of course not.
As for whether or not this needed to be done immediately, I don’t know. Frankly, parliamentary procedure has never been my area of expertise. My gut says that, were his vote not there, opposition could have filibustered this vote, significantly delaying incredibly long overdue aid, if not ending with this bill’s demise only for another endless back and forth. But, seeing as I figure most on this site think that if we just got rid of Capital Gains taxes, America would be back to her former self, I’ll assume that’s something you disagree with as well.
Logikal, the answer to your question is YES!
DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 1:39AM EST (link)My arguement stands!

DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 1:25AM EST (link)again, I did not have time to read this bill, did you? That is my point here, this did not need to get done on a Friday before a holiday weekend. This man showed where his allegiances lay my friend.
Lastly, if the D’s did it, I would expect it… and I would expect the R’s to take care of their family not play allegiance to the D’s.
She’s still be dead tomorrow, wow that was real education for you, your parallelism is atrocious.
I come here
logikal Saturday, February 14th at 1:40AM EST (link)Because I honestly believe that the only way forward in America is through trying to understand the people I so deeply disagree with. I have this weird hope that one day our politics won’t be played out only through theater and mean-spirited gridlock. Call me a dreamer.
I’ve never posted before because this obviously isn’t a place to debate politics. What would be the point? The same as, what would be the point of you posting on Daily Kos or any of the myriad liberal blogs.
But I come around, as I said, because I want to see the conservative perspective to these things. And I posted this time because I truly believe that were the shoe on the other foot, you all wouldn’t be so glib.
“Lastly, if the D’s did it, I would expect it… and I would expect the R’s to take care of their family not play allegiance to the D’s.”
I didn’t say play allegiance to the D’s, my hypothetical revolved around if there were legislation that Republicans needed one more Republican vote to pass. If this were 2003, and Republicans needed one more vote for legislation they deemed vital to this country… Would this site openly criticize and mock a Republican for leaving his family to make the vote? I’m assuming you’d probably hold him up as a hero.
Stick to reading my friend...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 1:47AM EST (link)especially, with the last paragraph of your provacative post. Read up on conservative issues, Did I answer your question?
The Government does not move at the pace you perceive. I know, you want creditentials? This kind of spending does not need to happen this quickly. I started reading this bill a week ago, and I had less than 24 hours to read the latest.
Lastly, if you want the Conservative opinion read the Diaries, here we argue the Conservative message not the Liberal Talking Points.
Don't let them chase you away. Stand for what you believe. But back it up. I disagree with you , but conservatives listen to both sides. And if your here listening to the "other side", then maybe??

Christine (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 8:04AM EST (link)I would say, if R’s needed one more vote to pass legislation and the person they needed had a family emergency, they would DELAY THE VOTE FOR A DAY OR TWO.
This legislation didn’t need to be completed on Friday at 11pm. Obama isn’t even in town, for crying out loud. It will be Monday or Tuesday before it is signed, and there’s little if any immediate relief in the bill.
Dem’s just wanted this out of their hands before people started really reading it.

Also, logikal does not seem understand that this amount of money and Government expansion will not do anything for a long time. logikal Saturday, February 14th at 1:45AM EST (link)I didn’t particularly come here to debate the merits of this bill. But you’re blind if you don’t think a good many Americans deem stimulus of the country vital and time-sensitive.
And why do Republicans need so much time to read the bill? The Republican vote was going to be NO to pretty much anything this side of a bill that included only tax cuts. Boehner has made that pretty clear.
Logikal, this is not stimulus.

logikal Saturday, February 14th at 2:02AM EST (link)That I’m not here to debate the bill, because you and I will never agree on what the proper action is. From what I’ve seen going through this whole process, there are things I don’t agree with.
I’ve never spoken for the American people, but you’d be daft to think that there aren’t those who feel that action has been long overdue. And if both houses of Congress were able to create something they were happy with, but without one vote would be held up by the obstructionism of a petulant minority party, I can understand the urgency. That is in no way me blessing every detail of the bill, just understanding the haste.
Again, none of this takes away from my previous position.

Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

My final Comment to Logikal...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 2:08AM EST (link)My final points, when in the history of the Congress was something this large pushed through in such a short amount of time? Never, so why did we take less than a month to do this and then give the United States citizens less than 24 hours to read the final version?
Next, I answered your question, I would be pretty disgusted with Senator Brown if he had a R next to his name, for getting back to push a bill like this through over the death of mother. Sorry, that is just the way it is, and if you haven’t noticed this is a website for the conservative thought and discussion, so if you expected anything but the sniping you saw you are kidding yourself; however, lighten up.
Next, your comments are based on your unsubstantiated knowlege of the Americans need for a stimulus. I contend this is not the case, the same went for Republicans when Bush was President with the last one. Trust me, I was angry with the Republicans for doing that last TARP bill. I read this bill, and the gravity of it is so far reaching that Americans that want to read it need to be given the time to do so. To me, Senator Brown trucking back to Washington tells me something, it is especially a bad bill that had Americans know what was in it they would be angry. There is nothing stimulating about this bill, it is Government spending to increase its size and scope. That is it. That is why I told you to read the darn bill, open your blind eyes to the fact that this is a disaster waiting to happen.
Next, the Democrats voted with the Republicans in the House to allow 48 hours to review the bill. Did they get that, NO. The Democrats did nothing they promised to do, Nothing; therefore, the logic that there are things in here that would never fly for the American people.
Next, Tax Cuts are more effective than Government Spending. It is the quickest way to infuse the economy with money immediately. Those tax cuts include reduction in income taxes, captial gains, corporate tax rates, etc. Government expansion takes time and spending is horribly slow even in the DoD. If you worked in it you would understand it.
Shall I go on?
Oh please, continue (sarcasm)
logikal Saturday, February 14th at 2:55AM EST (link)“Next, I answered your question, I would be pretty disgusted with Senator Brown if he had a R next to his name, for getting back to push a bill like this through over the death of mother.”
Fine then, I don’t particularly believe that, and I’m fairly certain the proprietors of this site wouldn’t hold an R up as a shining light, saying, “Even though his mother had died, Senator Republican heroically came to Washington for this monumental bill.”
“I read this bill, and the gravity of it is so far reaching that Americans that want to read it need to be given the time to do so.”
Funny, I don’t think this argument existed on this website for a bill like the Patriot Act… But I disagree with this point since the basics of all of this bill have been out in the open since they started work on it. Has anything slipped in since the last revision? Of course, but this isn’t anything particularly new in American law-making.
“To me, Senator Brown trucking back to Washington tells me something,”
Yes, but you have to understand that you have a certain viewpoint that certainly taints what his actions tell you. Others see this as the bill being so important in his mind or the mind of his constituents that he needed to come back to do this.
“it is especially a bad bill that had Americans know what was in it they would be angry. ”
That’s a mighty big claim for a person who apparently has had no time to read the legislation.
“There is nothing stimulating about this bill, it is Government spending to increase its size and scope.”
This is a point I’m not going to discuss on here, as you and I most certainly have a very different viewpoint of what stimulus actually is. You flatly assert that tax cuts are more effective than government spending. I’m sorry, but that’s just not fact, that’s your opinion. Moody’s disagrees (saying that food stamps and unemployment benefits are the best stimulus and that tax cuts and incentives are actually the slowest). Also, when state budgets are basically imploding, which will lead to layoffs of teachers, firemen, and police officers, how exactly does cutting off government revenue help this? The answer is that it doesn’t, which is why a good deal of governors R and D alike support stimulus spending. You may disagree with all of these points, but you’re a fool to think that just because you say so, or just because Moe Lane says so, or especially just because Rush or George Will say so, that tax cuts are the only solution.
“The Democrats did nothing they promised to do”
They promised to get stimulus passed as quickly as possible, if I recall. After the behavior of the Republicans during their time in the majority, and even now, I don’t really believe the Democrats owe them much in this regard.
...or just because Moe Lane says so, or especially just because Rush or George Will say so
DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 1:55PM EST (link)“Funny, I don’t think this argument existed on this website for a bill like the Patriot Act…”
I am pretty sure the arguement would have happened with Libertarians who visit this site on a regular basis. You are comparing the Patriot Act to this Reinvestment Act, there is no comparison; good try, though tell me where a spending bill of this size and scope has not been argued on this website?
But I disagree with this point since the basics of all of this bill have been out in the open since they started work on it. Has anything slipped in since the last revision?
No, this bill has not been out in the open, the conference bill has not. All we had was the Senate version and HR-1 was out for a while but these are roughly 600 pages. Words have meaning Logikal, 400 pages slipped in? Have you worked for the Government or competed for a Government contract, or even been awarded a contract? Probably not; therefore, do not mistake that once sentence can change everything in a bill.
“Of course, but this isn’t anything particularly new in American law-making.”
OK, lawmakers paperclip things to the bill, sure; but at least we get to see it and I never seen one where they slipped all of this in such a short amount of time.
“You flatly assert that tax cuts are more effective than government spending. I’m sorry, but that’s just not fact, that’s your opinion. Moody’s disagrees (saying that food stamps and unemployment benefits are the best stimulus and that tax cuts and incentives are actually the slowest).”
You are pathetic, Moody’s can disagree with me all they want, it does not change the fact that what you support does not work. Have you worked with the Federal Acquisition Regulations, or in a governemtn department both State and Federal. Have you worked on budgets for the military, given your naivity I will assume not. The Goverment will take 10 times longer to spend that money that you so blindly think will do more than tax cuts. Read on Keynesian economics, the read Hayek.
“The answer is that it doesn’t, which is why a good deal of governors R and D alike support stimulus spending. You may disagree with all of these points, but you’re a fool to think that just because you say so, or just because Moe Lane says so, or especially just because Rush or George Will say so, that tax cuts are the only solution.”
R and D Govenors agree go state by state and tell me which Governors other than California, are on board for this?
Maybe you are too young to remember the USSR, Poland, Hungary, eastern block, North Korea, or China 15 years ago this is what this bill represents the step to.
Government spending at the Federal level will have little to no impact on the economy other than short term manipulation of the numbers i,e, unemployment see the bill for who gets to report on the impact of this bill).
I do not use George Will or Rush or Moe Lane; this is a tired all mind-numb robot arguement that the left has tried for years. Wow, you are truly trying to get the last word when you clearly have lost his arguement.

izoneguy (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 10:42AM EST (link)Once this hulking piece of dog doo gets exposed to the light of day it will be like a boat anchor on Obama. This will weigh him down and once those democrats start getting calls for their heads I wonder how many will reverse course and not have some much enthusiasm for more bailouts, nationalized medicine and more stimulus packages? You know this package was just throwing the dogs a bone to get them out of the house. Now Obama wants to start the re-model of America to suite his liberal vision.
Let’s just see how long it takes until Obama’s own democratic congress throws him under the bus?????
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
Kinda ironic, isnt't it izone.
redneck_hippie (Diary) Saturday, February 14th at 2:16PM EST (link)I’ve been thinking along those lines and I have been suspecting that the reason that the House Revolt held, is that they know that this boondoggle is so bad that it could preemptively sink the nationalization of health care, the destruction of capitalism through eco-ization of our economy, and the declawing of the Eagle (american military might); all 3 major pushes of The Novelty President. Oh, and Congress better be girding for card check and amnesty for illegals, which are stealth provisions to accelerate the takeover.
No matter how bitter this pill, it would almost be worth it if the rest of the agenda failed because of it. Wow, I actually feel a little bit better. At least until Congress meets again and, as it is said, a little more freedom gets killed each day in session.
