[BREAKING] Boehner to House GOP: Vote against the stimulus.

But, hey, remember: \"I won.\"

Or, as Heritage put it, “The Pelosi-Reid-Obama Debt Plan”. Anyway, Politico reports:

President Barack Obama is coming to the Capitol this afternoon to curry favor with congressional Republicans. But it appears GOP leaders have already made up their minds to oppose his $825 billion stimulus plan.

House Republican Leader John A. Boehner and his No. 2, Whip Eric Cantor, told their rank-and-file members Tuesday morning during a closed-door meeting to oppose the bill when it comes to the floor Wednesday, according to an aide familiar with the discussion. Boehner told members that he’s voting against the stimulus, and Cantor told the assembled Republicans that there wasn’t any reason for them to support the measure, according to another person in the room. Cantor and his whip team are going to urge GOP members to oppose it.

In a nod to the president, Boehner did point out that this is the third time that Obama has met with Republican leaders, compared with the zero meetings they’ve held with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) — a now-familiar refrain from Republicans in the House. But Obama’s diplomacy clearly isn’t buying any votes yet.

(H/T: Instapundit) Apparently, “I won.” counts as diplomacy these days.

Below are some of the offered GOP amendments to the The Pelosi-Reid-Obama Debt Plan:

…and that’s some impressive bipartisanship there, huh?  As one of my colleagues noted, a lot of this would have been fig leaves – and I’ll note in semi-response that House Democrats didn’t seem to even care about acquring any.  No wonder the House GOP did an alternate stimulus plan; no wonder Cantor’s going to do a whip-round against the current mess.

And, hey: no wonder that the White House is currently yelling at Pelosi to get the freaking contraception money out of her monstrosity.  Even this administration can see a rhetorical club when it’s heading so directly towards its head, and accelerating…

Call Boehner's office

DerKrieger (Diary) Tuesday, January 27th at 12:08PM EST (link)

I live in AR but I called Boehner’s office to voice my support for his opposition to this pork fest. I urge everyone to do the same as well as calling your own Rep. We need to expose more of the pork and special interest payoffs like the money Nan tried to secure for Planned Parenthood. Get busy!

It’s really pretty easy with the online email forms – you compose your message, copy, paste, and change the names/state to personalize each. Took me about 20 minutes to whip out 10 or so emails earlier this evening. I also called my Tennessee senators/rep today – figure I’ll go multimedia on them (phone, email, fax) and maybe they’ll get the message. Corker and Alexander have both been a little AC/DC on their votes. You think they’re on the right track, and suddenly, wham! They fall off the wagon.

These people don't work for Obama

DerKrieger (Diary) Tuesday, January 27th at 12:21PM EST (link)

How hard is it for them to understand that they work only for their constituents. Even the supine Harry Reid had the courage to say he doesn’t work for Obama. If I were in Congress I’d say the same thing.

Cheetah772 (Diary) Tuesday, January 27th at 12:35PM EST (link)

Going into 2010 elections, maybe Repubs can use it as a club to attack Democrats if the stimulus package turns out to be a massive waste of money and an epic failure. It’s more likely it will fail anyway. I know it won’t mean Repubs will retake the House, but it could mean a major dent for Democrats and especially for President Obama as well.

trying to get an actual needed bill to stimulate the economy that should include some public works, but mostly supply side tax cuts that have a proven track record under Coolidge, JFK, Reagan and Bush.

But the House bill is nothing more than a huge pork bill, stimulate govt permanent fed and state govt jobs bill and one time puny tax rebates.

And if the only choice we have is this, then we must choose the choice to oppose it andf let them own the consequence as we point out that the only jobs it “saves” and creates are enviro lawyer jobs.

Now, we should continue to try and get Obama divided from Mother Pelosi that cut out many of Obama’s business and other tax cuts. We must try in the Senate.

But if we fail, then we must oppose.

No compromise

DerKrieger (Diary) Tuesday, January 27th at 12:53PM EST (link)

There is absolutely no reason to compromise on this bill. I’d rather forgo any tax cuts if it meant that there was zero additional spending by these clowns. The Dems can always repeal the tax cuts later but the spent money is gone forever. Now is the time to press for tax cuts only even if it means a tax holiday for everyone equivalent ot the dollar amount of the stimulus. It would be immediate and actually stimulative.

…to a better bill is for the Republicans to simply step out of the way and let the Democrats all get on the bus. Don’t offer any amendments to this abortion. Why should they get their fingerprints on this mess when it will only mean they will share the blame when the manure hits the fan. The Dems have the power to pass it over the objections of the Republicans, without a single Republican vote. So, in recognition of this fact, and the trust that the American people have placed in them, simply tell the other side that you’re voting against it en masse. That won’t sway the extreme left wing, but it’ll scare the bejeebers out of the moderate blue dogs, because they know that if it fails – and it most certainly will fail – they and they alone will be the ones holding the smoking gun. That alone will cause them to start backing away from their own leaders and their own legislation as they seek to find a way either to (1) get Republican buy-in, or (2) come up with a bill that has at least some modicum of success.

Who knows, this may scare them enough to slow the process down long enough for the economy to begin recovering on its own. Wouldn’t that be a hoot.

A Tricky Choice

jhayes Tuesday, January 27th at 5:09PM EST (link)

It’s my understanding that Obama has the votes to make this happen without Republican support, but because it is his first major act as Prez, that he wants to do it with bipartisan support, as it will certainly set the tone for down the road.

I think it would be wiser for R’s to aggressively weed out the pork in the program and THEN express reluctant support for “Obama’s plan”, always keeping that label attached to it.

That way, they can take credit for cleaning the program up and letting the “New Guy” take a stab at fixing the economy HIS way ( without the obvious pork) – if it fails, it’s still “his baby”, and if it succeeds, they were on board.

The absolute worst thing that could happen, is for Republicans to adamantly and loudly oppose the program (which will then most likely get the needed votes without them), and then for the program to succeed. That would not be pretty.

Just my 2 cents.

Yes, that would be the best option, IF....

government intervention works. We have seen this from FDR years. What makes you think this could work this time?

"Pelosi-Reid-Obama" - I like it!

Flagstaff (Diary) Tuesday, January 27th at 5:18PM EST (link)

That is, I like the order of names. The Obama should always be listed last, because he is the least experienced person in any list, and we need to remember it.

Also, Boehner’s approach should be applied to all things legislative, unless the Dems come over and agree with US. We need members who vote against the Debt Plan, against Eric Holder, against Tim Geithner and against everything else that violates our principles.

If they don’t vote “NO” on activity we oppose, what’s the point of being there at all? Our Congressmen of both types must realize that they need to establish a base form which they can credibly claim to be “different” from their eventual opponents, and from which to credibly assert the claim for superiority of Republican positions over the Democrats’ positions.

“The press is so powerful in its image-making role that it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”– Malcolm X, Audubon Ballroom, December 13, 1964

Vote against the Stimulus is a Win-Win-Win-Win Idea

Vote against the Stimulus is a Win-Win-Win-Win Idea

Win, you have sent of message that you do not believe this type of spending and Government intervention in the private sector will work, and you are not prepared to sub-prime mortgage our future.

Win, when it all fails in the end you can now show why the whole scheme of Government make-work programs and Government buyout of the private sector is a awful idea and that supply-side economics is still the panacea.

Win, Democrats and the MSM will not be able to find a way to blame you when this house of cards collapses.

Win, if the Democrats are right and it does work or the economy turns around by itself then the American people will be alright. Do you see Democrats how this works, you root America to win and you can never lose.

I wonder why the Blue Dogs would go

along with this thing either. Maybe I’m deaf, dumb, and blind (ummm ..cancel that!), but I’m not seeing much of a constituency for this train wreck period. There are plenty of Dems who’d like to see this thing doa too.

Blue Dog Democrats are caught in a Whipping Situation

DONTREADONME (Diary) Tuesday, January 27th at 10:47PM EST (link)

I agree with you that I do not see how the blue dog Democrats could ever support the plan as is right now; however, shrek of the house’s whips are pretty darn effective. Fortunately for the moment I am not a Blue Dog Democrat. This type of vote is what will bury the dogs in the 2010 election, that is if the GOP can put up a concerted effort to remind the local electorate of the incumbants votes on many of stretches pet projects.

They are between a rock and a hard place.

CarlSchurz (Diary) Tuesday, January 27th at 10:59PM EST (link)

If they vote for it, the GOP stands an even chance of picking them off. If they do not vote for it, they can get primaried by the DNC. Their seats are at stake.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth a war, is much worse. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

The DNC didn't support folks like

Heath Shuler (a blue dog example) because they like him, they understand that they can’t run a candidate utterly out of line with local values.
