One thing for sure about the Senate - Every Senator thinks he is the smartest person in the world and that the next 99 smartest people in the world are his fellow Senators.

Obama is going wild naming these other geniuses to posts, but only ones from states with Democratic governors so that there is no chance (at least until an election) that a Republican can replace him or her.

That could get interesting in 2 or 4 years if there is a backlash against incumbents and lots of these rookie appointees are up for election.

How many sitting Senators has Obama selected for Exec posts: NY, DE (Biden), IL (Obama), CO, others?

Even I, and I'm optimistic about 2010, don't think the GOP can take back the Senate in 2010 - they'd have to take 9 or more seats back, and given what's up in two years, that's a bridge too far, unless Obama's & the Dems' approval ratings are in the sub-20s when summer 2010 rolls around (a possibility, but not a likelihood).

What's probably a lot more likely is for the GOP to make progress in take-backs, getting the Dem numbers down to 55, 54, possibly 53, and setting the stage for taking back the chamber in 2012.

(The House, OTOH, is another matter - that's the chamber we could actually take back in 2 years, if things go our way.)

Even though there is no chance that a Republican can get this seat unless there is a special election, I have stood against the 17th Amendment in the past and I still do now.

The legislature should pick the Senator.

Given the number of Dem Senators that are getting extracted into the Obamadministration from the US Senate, there will be a lot of seats being up for grabs in 2010 with no real incumbents in them. So Obama had better make this next year be a good one, or the GOP could, if it works hard and sticks to conservative priniciples, take over the Senate again in 2010.

The only question is how, and how many.

Blago, before the arrest, had a 12% approval rating. It's now in the single digits.

If he's convicted, he'll be running numbers again.

There is an alternative, and the one that I PREFER is, by letting a State Legislative body make the selection - WITHOUT GOVERNOR APPROVAL OR VETO! If you want to save the CO$T$ of a Special Election, let names be entered into nomination into a States’ Senate body, deliberate, and let the States’ Senate make the final appointment. You will have an honest/open discussion and vetting of anyone that gets promoted to the US Senate from any State in these situations then. Another reason why Illinois especially needs to let IL Senate decide (permanent change to their process) is because if a Special Election is held we know record number of Dead people in IL will come out to vote for the Democrat in the Special Election!!

Just like they used to do in the old days.

Problem solved IL Dems!

And I'm sure you wouldn't suffer any electoral consequences if you took the choice away from the Governor *and* the people!

Well, probably not much. Right?...

I'm hoping that this gets really nasty and BLAGO feels the need to defend himself (in great detail) ad nauseum ad infinitum - and no . . . I'm still not
