It happened today on Fox News Sunday (via Hot Air Headlines):
…Shelby, who also voted against the $700 bailout bill for the financial industry, called it a “bridge loan to nowhere,” and said General Motors, Ford and Chrysler have to undergo a fundamental restructuring of their operations rather than look for federal help.
He also predicted auto industry executives would soon come back to Washington looking for more money, beyond any assistance they are given now.
“This is a down payment on many billions to come,” Shelby warned. “This is not something that happened overnight. This is 30 years in the making. These companies basically have failed or are failing. They probably need, according to some people, about 60 percent of the management to go, and about 40 percent downsize of the workers.”
Shelby also threatened a filibuster of any auto aid agreement, but was unsure whether he had the votes to sustain it.
I don’t think that there’s a Contributor to RedState that disagrees with Shelby’s second paragraph. We’re all grimly certain that the auto industry will be coming back for more life support money next year. I’m not sure whether Shelby’s actually trying to sweep back the tide here, or merely making sure that our objections are on the record; either way, there’ll probably be a bailout before the end of the year, and then it’s your best guess when the Big Four (I’m including the UAW in this one) will have their hand out again.
Presumably the Democrats will be hoping that their new clients will not fly in on corporate jets the next time that they stop by to ask for the taxpayers’ money.

Diogenes314 (Diary) Sunday, December 7th at 11:05PM EST (link)And it’s three little servants. They need to filibuster anything that doesn’t include bankrupcy and reorganization. If the Party of Pelosi wants to destroy the U.S. auto industry, let them do it by themselves.
Plus the filibuster will give us a starting point for our Campaign 2010 Senators Who Need A Primary Challenger list.
Exactly right Diogenes...and way to go Senator Shelby
conservativemusician Monday, December 8th at 12:16AM EST (link)The Dems should not be allowed to look for political cover through “bi-partisanship” (gag me) with the Republicans. This deal should be hung squarely around the neck of the ReidPoBama coming debacle next year.
Also, GWB needs to stop worrying about his legacy, for crying out loud. This was not his fault…it was the Dems and the terrible management of the Detroit auto makers. I hope for once…just once that GWB takes one for our team and not pressure our side in Congress to support this stupid bailout. Shelby is correct that this is just the beginning of the corporate welfare, so it does the GOP no good in the long or short term to be tied to this terrible legislation. This could be the beginning of the GOP standing up for principle as Obama takes office and could present a golden opportunity for conservatives.
The best thing GWB can do for the country is to stop going before the cameras and just let events play out. The more he talks, the more ammunition the Dems will have. Sooner or later, bankruptcy will have to be the solution. I just hope these idiots won’t screw us out of several hundred billion before they have this “epiphany”.
"Bridge loan to nowhere"
Bill S (Diary) Sunday, December 7th at 11:08PM EST (link)Outstanding. That’s the play on words of the year.
Not only should the GOP filibuster this, they should publicly state their disagreement with GWB’s cooperation on this deal.

I actually worked on a Democrat's campaign...

I continue to help elect Democrats

I have an idea to propose as a counter bailout plan..
Attack Mode (Diary) Sunday, December 7th at 11:52PM EST (link)Do a 3 month suspension on the income tax, capital gains, and the corporate tax. Additionally we suspend all UAW benefits minus basic health care costs. Add a reduction of severance pays by 15% and lower on a regressive scale based on years since active employment (lowest wage equal to minimum wage times 1.5 = $22,620 annually).
This would free up internal cash revenue for the Big 3 and also be an instant pay raise for every tax paying individual in America.

Aaron, I have to ask
Reaper0Bot0 (formerly Han_Pritcher) (Diary) Sunday, December 7th at 11:55PM EST (link)If GM is going to crater in a matter of weeks, absent a large infusion of cash, how will that save them? Please note that I am not saying that I think it’s a good or bad idea to bail them out.

It won't: but then, neither will the existing bailout plan.

Moe, if we're granting that GM is about to die
Reaper0Bot0 (formerly Han_Pritcher) (Diary) Monday, December 8th at 12:15AM EST (link)Then there is little point in calling this a bailout. At that point it’s just a conservative advocating what a conservative always advocates – tax cuts. Nothing wrong with that, but there’s little reason to tie it to an event you have no desire (or ability, perhaps) to prevent.
However bad an idea it might be, writing a large check to GM can assure that it does not die in the immediate future. If the goal is to keep GM from completely collapsing then the proposed bailout has the advantage of actually doing what it’s supposed to (even if only briefly and at stupendous cost with no long-term plan for viability). A series of tax cuts for people who are not employed by GM or its suppliers has, at best, a tangential relationship to the problem we’re discussing here.
GM deserves to die, I do not deny that stone cold fact. I just don’t see how Aaron’s proposal will have an immediate or direct effect on the problem at hand. It could do a lot of good, perhaps, but that good is not at all narrowly tailored to the problem of the immediate loss of an incredibly large number of jobs.
I don’t think GM deserves a dime of my money OR yours. I’d rather spend the money (if indeed it must be spent) helping retrain the tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of people who are about to be out of work. If the problem is unemployment there are better ways to fight it than keeping GM around as a jobs program.
I understand the desire to want a tax cut as often as possible because you believe that individuals are inherently better able to spend the money. That doesn’t mean that a tax cut will solve any particular pressing and immediate problem. Yes, of course there may be NO solution at hand, but that does not mean that tying a tax cut (or a series of them) to a problem while not intending or expecting that tax cut to actually solve it is a good bit of strategy.
I’m a lying troll.
My dear fellow, if we're going to insist that things be called...

Do you believe that this will be sufficient
Reaper0Bot0 (formerly Han_Pritcher) (Diary) Monday, December 8th at 12:16AM EST (link)Or even nearly so? And given the half a trillion dollar deficit we’ve already been running, do you think it’s a great time to drastically slash receipts?
I did understand what you meant. Perhaps I underestimate the amount of money GM would save, or overestimate the amount of money they need.
I’m a lying troll.
Do you think it is better for a deficit to be caused by excessive spending rather than insufficient tax collection?
JSobieski (Diary) Monday, December 8th at 12:23AM EST (link)The problem with Keynesian economics is that it treats government spending (which is on the whole, significantly more wasteful than private spending) the same as private spending.
Who do you think makes better investments? Oil companies investing their profits, or DC in building roads?
I agree with your point, that if GM is on death’s bed, a tax cut unless we are talking about a state and federal moratorium on taxes involving GM is not going to save the patient.
However, I would like to hear your answer as to question I set forth above.
My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

Reaper0Bot0 (formerly Han_Pritcher) (Diary) Monday, December 8th at 12:27AM EST (link)(an admission I do not make), then I would rather it comes from too much spending than too little taxation. I expect that position will be unpopular hereabouts.
In all fairness, we’ve spent much of the last year both increasing spending and cutting taxes. This marvelous state of affairs probably angers the both of us.

As to who spends the money better?
Reaper0Bot0 (formerly Han_Pritcher) (Diary) Monday, December 8th at 12:30AM EST (link)Depends on the circumstance. On infrastructure? The government. I’m keen to the notion that we can get some people working by improving our roads, government buildings, and broadband capacity. I work for a telecom. I am well aware of the cost/benefit analysis that convinces most of them not to bother building out decent broadband networks in lots of rural areas.
Private actors will avoid spending money when they won’t make it back. If it makes sense to wire nearly everyone then there will have to be a role for the public sector. The debate is really about whether or not we should get those folks wired. Or if we’re really smart, we’d use WiMax or LTE, but I digress.
I’m a lying troll.
Great rhetoric
tankertodd (Diary) Monday, December 8th at 12:11AM EST (link)We’ve been hearing the financial bailout placed on par with the automotive bailout. Two events couldn’t be more different. One was a whamo surprise. The other has been a no-duh for decades. 7000 dealers for GM vs 1000 for Toyota. The Job Bank. Insane salaries. Poor quality. I’m sorry, but a company that pays relatively unskilled laborers the same salary as a general practice doctor is not going to be around long. It’s that simple.
