Waxman Wins Powerful Energy and Commerce Post
Rep. Henry Waxman unseated fellow veteran Democratic lawmaker John Dingell Thursday to become chairman of the House’s powerful Energy and Commerce Committee.
The House Democratic Caucus voted 137 to 122 to accept the recommendation of its steering committee and agreed to replace Dingell, 82 years old, a long-time friend of the auto industry, with Waxman, a 69-year-old Californian anxious to ease global warming, a top concern of president-elect Barack Obama.
More over at AoSHQ; they’re linking to an article where Senator Boxer is promising that the first priority is spending 15 billion on clean energy initiatives – no, that doesn’t mean nuclear power. Get real.
But never mind that, right now, because there’s something more important that needs to be addressed. We of the VRWC want to make this point very, very clear: the fate of the domestic auto industry is now solely in the hands of the Democratic Party. We had agreed – against many of our legislators’ better judgment – to go with a bailout, but the Democratic Party has decided to put it off until at least next month, for reasons that no doubt seem good to them (sorta via Hot Air). And, of course, starting in January it’s going to be obvious even to the most uninformed that the GOP’s no longer in charge. Sobeit – but the corollary to this is that this is no longer our problem. We are no longer responsible. This is now the Democrats’ mess to fix, and they will be 100% responsible for the results.

The people who talk about virtually endless supplies of fissile materials are counting on the extraction of uranium from seawater, a completely unproven technology. Known, actual, reserves of fissile materials are starkly limited.
Building the thousands of nuclear plants needed to take on a significant portion of our energy needs and hoping for some miracle to drop fuel in our laps is a bad idea.
Now if an energy producing fusion design becomes available that’s a whole different matter. Hydrogen we gots.

You are forgetting the resource of dismantled Russian warheads (read ‘most of the current US commercial supply’). May I suggest the WNA’s take on the uranium supply. We can also use thorium/plutonium to stretch out the supply.
Fusion? I’ll believe it when I see it 30 years from now (that’s what they said 30 years ago).

We know the MSM will be in the tank as much if not more than they were for Bill Clinton – we have to get around them. They’re not the behemoth they once were & are dwindling as we speak. People knew the MSM were in the tank for Obama, & they have lost mucho credibility. I think there may be some fracture if everything’s not roses & chocolate by summer, & we have the alternative media to spread our message – we simply have to make good use of it.
I thought Barney Frank would be a good “Face” for the Democrats, however let’s have Waxman in there also…

U-235 may be limited. but fission reactors may be fueled by thorium. Also, if we build breeder reactors we can turn Uranium -238, which we have lots of to Pu-239 and fuel reactors with that. We can also reprocess spent fuel and extract the remaining U-235 and Pu-239 for use in new fuel. And, no, I’m not a physist. I’m a nuclear engineer who has worked in the industry for 30+ years.
