James Oberstar for Secretary of Transportation?

*James Oberstar?*

What, they couldn’t reanimate William Proxmire?

Yes, yes, he’s yet another Washington insider: anybody who was stupid enough to believe Senator Obama when he said “The real gamble in this election is playing the same Washington game with the same Washington players and expecting a different result.” shouldn’t vote anyway, for the good of the Republic. But Oberstar?

This is the guy who tried to amend The Commercial Space Launch Amendments Act in 2004 by adding language that would have regulated suborbital flights to almost regular-airline levels – or, to put it more bluntly; this is the guy who tried to wreck the American space tourism industry. When he became House Transportation Chair after 2006, there was some worries that he might want a second crack; fortunately, he apparently wasn’t able to get the excuse to get one. But if he’s Secretary of Transportation… well, Rand Simberg sums it up perfectly: “Uh-oh” (see also here).

To every space enthusiast who voted for Senator Obama… thanks, guys. Thanks a lot. But look on the bright side: maybe the Chinese will put together something in a decade or two.

Moe Lane

PS: Don’t bother contacting Obama’s people. If they didn’t care enough to run his name, or they did and didn’t care enough to find somebody else, then they won’t care that you’re complaining. You’re better off contacting the Ranking Member for Commerce, Science & Transportation:

202-224-5922

202-224-0776 (FAX)

…although any worried Democratic space enthusiasts reading this should remember that her ability to do anything about this potential mess is currently somewhere between nil and zilch. Yeah, that was really bright of you guys, huh?

Commercial Spaceflight? Ehhh...

Jay_Cee Thursday, November 6th at 6:49PM EST (link)

I don’t know anything about this guy, but I can’t imagine much that I care about less than the commercial spaceflight industry. Is it ever going to be anything more than an environmentally unfriendly amusement for millionaires?

You're not whom I'm aiming at.

With all these white guys floating around let alone all being Washington insiders, how in the world is he gonna bring hope, change, and unity if he keeps the black population on the fringes?

I’m not trying to mean. It’s got to really suck that they put such hope in this guy and it’s not going to change a thing for them.

I Don't - NASA Should Be Worried

IJB Thursday, November 6th at 7:28PM EST (link)

Luckily I think Obama has enough hubris to let the programs go on.

There’s a very strong constituency in the Democrat Party that wants to gut space flight and NASA and put that money into social programs.

I don’t remember if I’ve heard anything specifically along these lines from Obama. But I also know I haven’t heard any lofty rhetoric from Obama about space and space flight (or science in general) either.

I fully expect NASA and related agencies will be cut back under Obama. They may not be “gutted” (though, with these guys, I can’t even be sure about that). But any cutbacks will effectively end any decent programs, and will basically turn NASA into another gov’t ‘jobs program’ accomplishing nothing of value.

Former MN House Staffer here. This guy is functionally retarded and a porker of epic proportions. He spent millions on a bike path on a place where its freezing 6 months out of the year, let along playing politics when a bridge in his home state collapsed he blamed in on the president and not on the billions of dollars he could have diverted to bridge infrastructure in his home state, which went to other pet projects of his instead. I dont even think he has a residence in his district anymore as he spends the majority of congressional breaks in europe learning about various “infrastructures” in paris, berlin etc.

I would not want a job working on the Orion spacecraft right now. Lots of money and Democrats have not been especially interested in space over the last few decades sense Kennedy.

I’m not a big fan of the Space Station or manned systems anyway anyway, more into the unmanned stuff, but that’s my bias having worked in that side of space systems.

seems to me that we are back to the old Joan Claybrook days at DOT. That means more nagging, heavier cars in the name of safety at the same time CAFE is requiring the automakers to get better mileage, and maybe a push for the return of the double nickel. Relax. The smothering embrace of the nanny state will make it all go away very quickly.

Government is evil.

It’s a necessary evil, but it is an evil. Any application of government should be done in a somber fashion, as it is a failure of our humanity that we couldn’t handle it as individual citizens. Deciding whether to apply government to solve a problem should be considered on the same level as burning down an orphanage full of children to solve a problem. Deciding to tax should be thought of like deciding to stab an innocent man for our own gain. Anyone who celebrates government is a ghoulish wretch who must be ostracized from polite society.

But it seems like the underlying physics make for a much tougher argument – too much energy needed to get off the planet. What does a single rocket launch require? a few hundred tons of propellant?

And where is the economic upside? Asteroid Mining? Maybe in the next century…?

Actually I’m not even sure I’m a big fan of government space exploration. Seems awfully expensive and the biggest payoff seems to be international prestige.

Economic upside

Next93 (Diary) Thursday, November 6th at 11:03PM EST (link)

If we leave it up to people like you it’ll be a lot more than a hundred years; we’ve made virtually no progress in the last 40 years because of your line of thinking, and there’s no reason to beleive that will change in the next 60.

I’ve heard these “projections” (based on almost total ignorance of the technology or its potential) ever since Nixon dismanlted the public space program; you don’t see the economic upside, it’s welfare for white people, why are we spending tax money “in space” when there are drug addicts who don’t have cars/unwed mothers watching black-and-white tvs/performance artists without medical insurance, yadda, yadda, yadda.

And you know what? I agree with you. You shouldn’t be forced to pay for something you see as a waste of taxpayer money. We should only be putting our tax money into things we know produce results, like, say, methadone programs and condom awareness for fourth-graders. At the same time, I SHOULD be allowed to invest in private enterprises that I think will bring about the next major advancement in human development (and make a LOT of money in the process!)

What we’re talking about here is PRIVATE money. If some rich guy wants to spend his money to fly into orbit, and in doing so creates jobs, avances the technology that get us to that upside (and a lot faster than in 40 years), and possibly opens up whole new fields we can’t even imagine right now, who are you to say he can’t? I’d rather he be buying a suborbital flight than jetting around the country to tell us schlubs who can’t afford carbon indulgences offsets that we should be living a simpler life.

Oberstar’s objections to private space is that the current rules don’t give the trial lawyers enough of a ledge to perch on while they pick the meat off the bones in the event of a crash. Gee, a career congressional democrat fighting for the good of the trial lawyers instead of the good of the country. What a shock.

Oh, and by the way, getting into orbit requires about the same energy as a flight from New York to Syndey. Current developments in PRIVATE space technology may make it possible to beam space-based solar power (about 10 times more efficient than earth-based solar arrays and not effected by weather or season) to the surface of the earth.

Obama was The One in 2008.
He’ll be a BIGGER one in 2012.

is less regulated than airlines? And that’s a good thing?

Personally, particularly in a post-9/11 world, I’d like to be a little more careful of who we have developing what amounts to ICBM technology (minus the warhead). If you think a 747 makes a hell of a weapon take a look at the typical surface to orbit rocket. It’s 90%+ high explosive.

They just want someone, anyone, that will help return us to $4.00/Gallon Gas. Global Warming and all, they want to beat people into conservation without regard for what it does to Family budgets and the economy overall. They will also want to double or triple the Gas Taxes, in the name of rebuilding the infrastructure and/or whatever excuse proves convenient to ram down our throats (like they tried to use the 35W tragedy).

Looking back…

If the Democrat party had not been using any/all means necessary Legislative, enviro-terrorism, Lawsuits, to block Drilling for Resources here he would have NEVER gotten to the point where we are now in getting 70% of our oil from overseas. Gas would have not gone over $2.00/Gal, let alone the $4.00+ in most locales this year. The economy would NOT have, therefore, slowed/stalled to the point that it did (CRA causing Mortgage crisis still would’ve hurt, but less would’ve gone under if their cost of going to work hadn’t quadrupled). The inflated Gas prices caused all goods to cost more.

But then, I’m sure some dumb-ass (yes, word chosen properly/correctly to correspond with the Democrat logo: JackAss) is gonna enlighten us to the Bush/Cheney Oil companies conspiracy, rather than 35+ years of Enviro-Terrorist policies of Democrats, being the cause of all America’s evils.
