Well, that was disappointing.

Maybe slightly depressing. Ask me in the morning.

Despair is, however, a sin, so we’ll avoid it.

I spent the drive back from DC trying to figure out what kind of post I’d be writing about this, until I decided that – as usual – the best policy is honesty. Obviously, I’m unhappy that McCain seems to have lost the election: I prefer him to Obama. This is apparently going to be a fairly unpopular opinion for me to have, which won’t be the first time. I’m also aware that a fair number of people are going to take this opportunity to attempt to savagely mock my side of the political spectrum in general and this site in particular (and a few may even spare a mock or two for myself), all of which is going to be an active annoyance for the next week or so, and a low-grade one for somewhat longer. We’ll also have to listen to the inevitable you-should-do-it-my-way people, although that’s actually fairly typical in the internet anyway. All in all, this is why people avoid defeats; they’re pains in the fundament.

And that’s pretty much it. Heck, I’m not even numb.

Believe me, I’m surprised by this, too.

Moe,

Be well Moe.

Now get back up and get ready for next time.

Have a good night, everyone. Good luck and God bless.

Thanks Han,

I’ve never gloated when we won, and I appreciate your thoughts tonight. Hopefully, after watching the Obamunist’s civilian security force in action in Philly today, I hope there is a next time.

We might lose NC as well along with Florida. This is tough. The polling was correct after all.

I think it is time to at least give a stern glance to those bashing the polls and offering false hope.

…rethink, rebuild. Come back hard, and challenge the Democrats at every turn. Having a strong opposition is a cornerstone of a healthy democracy.

But learn to move beyond wishful thinking. This result isn’t a surprise; but the days leading up to it were full of argumentum ad consequentum diaries: “If Obama wins, it will be terrible; thus, McCain will win”. That, and the “I like being the underdog” narrative that McCain put out.

I’ve seen this head-in-the-sand reasoning put the UK Conservative party into the political wilderness for a decade; without any viable opposition, the Labour government has just rotted. Please don’t let that happen here.

I think it's pretty obvious that we are in the

septembergurl (Diary) Tuesday, November 4th at 11:42PM EST (link)

midst of a sea change in American political life. We have taken as a country a sharp turn to the left (reasons for this to be discussed later).

Obama gambled that he could run as a straight-out leftist and win, and he was right. It’s a hard thing to admit, but people appear to be in a mood for the kind of statism we have not seen since World War II.

McCain ran the best possible campaign. Without Palin it would have been a rout.

I think that most Americans think they have elected a black Lincoln. They will find out otherwise. It will be a difficult lesson for them but fun for us.

The other good thing is that we can no longer be routinely called a racist country, can we? That card can’t be played any more.

Obama DID NOT run as a straight-out leftist. He ran as a tax cutter, and I strongly believe that this is the promise that carried him over the top. Especially since McCain failed to effectively counter this promise or present himself as a low-tax pro-growth conservative himself. Surprisingly, Obama actually got to the right of McCain on this.

I can’t tell you how many centrists and even light Republicans I talked to during the course of the campaign believed that Obama was going to cut their taxes and only raise them on somebody else. And that McCain was going to raise their taxes (especially taxing them on health benefits).

Many if not MOST Americans want to pay less taxes, and will vote accordingly. This is not “leftist,” but now they’ll have to learn the hard way that you can’t simply soak top-earners and hope to benefit yourself. Obama simply managed to befuddle enough Americans.

Maybe not a landslide, but a complete sweep

I am sad for what we as a nation will reap when the policies that were so ignored start to emerge from the WH/Congress.

I’m sorry for what my grandchildren will be forced to rectify. And I am saddened for the great amount of potential that could have been conveyed by GWB going into this election but was squandered. If ever there was a man absolutely prepared for the Presidency, McCain was it; and inversely, was Obama ill prepared.

Hopefully, in the coming months and years, the “test” prophesied by Biden fails to materialize; I am less optimistic on that.

From a Lib Dem McCain supporter

07rescue Wednesday, November 5th at 12:27AM EST (link)

If it is any comfort to any Republicans who are saddened at the losses tonight, there are now many Democratic Clinton supporters who now understand more than ever before how unfairly and disreputably the Democratic Party, and the left wing in particular, have treated you. We may quietly dissolve back into the DP, but like any worthy trojan horse we will be there to blow the whistle on the voter fraud and other crap that certain wings of our party will inevitably commit in the future. I don’t know whether we will succeed in turning the tide, any more than John McCain could stop them, but we will do our best. I hope we can make it a fairer fight in the future, and I personally vow that while we may disagree on policy issues, we do share many heartfelt values, and do not believe that the ends justifies the means.

I learned to respect your views and understandings like never before during this campaign, in large measure due to Red State, where thoughtful people can disagree in productive discourse. That has been a tremendous gift for me, as a lifelong Democrat. Meeting John McCain also has been a tremendous gift, and I feel profound sadness that he will never get to lead our country, he would have been a great president. I haven’t cried in 13 years. I didn’t cry when I learned I have cancer last month, I didn’t cry when I lost body parts to lifesaving surgery. I cried listening to John McCain concede the presidency tonight, it was a greater loss. He is a great man, whom I learned to love.

I am grateful to all the Republicans who shared my concerns about Barack Obama and welcomed the PUMA Democrats into your fold. Thank you. I hope we did everything needed to earn your trust.

Rest, but please don’t ever give up. Keep fighting for what you believe in, we are listening. You have more friends than you know.

It’s scant comfort now, I know. But seeds do grow, and every statement of principle you speak for plants another one. Do our country proud and never give up.

socialist in my book, and that is one of the big reasons he won. People want socialized medicine and they want someone to pay for their college, which Obama also promised, and to pay for their housing and there will be a jobs program based on the New Deal era programs to build bridges etc. Government will take over pension plans and 401Ks too. you cn forget about privatizing health care and social security.

We’ll all be lining up for our gummint cheese soon, unless we’re in the re-education camps where we’ll be getting beans and rice and listening to Michelle’s speeches.

Like Moe, I am disappointed and for the same reason: I preferred McCain to Obama. But, McCain was not my candidate of choice. I am grateful he introduced us to Sarah Palin, who I adore.

I do think Obama is going to have a tough time of it, though. The rest of the world is going to hate him the same as all the other American presidents – for doing too much or too little. Now he is going to have to end the financial crisis, and as we saw with the war, Americans have very little patience.

So, we’ll see. Let it unfold.

God’s Will will be done in the end-and he can make all things work, but with an Obama presidency vanishes any hope of reversing RVW or reducing the number of lives lost to abortion in the next ten or twenty years. I can’t help but view tonight as a direct attack on the lives of the unborn. Tonight abortion becomes further entrenched as the single largest form of institutionalized violence since slavery. Yes, tonight is redeemable, and God is in control, but I’d hesitate to call what happened tonight “the will of God”. Rather it is a tragedy that will result in the continued corporate sin of a nation blind to the murder of the unborn.

I'm not disagreeing with that, BUT

and be the “loyal opposition” to temper and stop these programs from happening. We have to have a better idea, explained competently, to have a chance. Suck it up, we lost this round. Now find a better way. We had it before, a simple solution. As John said, we lost our way. We now have to find it again. The republican party got too used to power and brought us along. We need to pull the party back to it’s principles that won us a majority -the same principles that won the Democrats the White House this year. It comes down to this – “who cares about me?” We lost this year, but we can get it back, we had it in 1994, what happened?

but there was polling data that indicated that the Pumas had dwindled to a tiny minority and that the bradley effect, if it ever existed, was not an issue. I can point you to the articles if you like.

I think the biggest take away point for you guys is that there’s a big difference between healthy skepticism and wishful thinking. The latter may be soothing but it leads you to bad conclusions. You certainly shouldn’t uncritically accept any poll results, but you should accept that competent pollsters can give you valuable data about the real situation at the time (or at least a first order approximation of same).

I’d try some historical perspective. Talk to him about previous hard fought elections and the aftermath. Knowing that this is far from the first time our country has seen this kind of thing may help him get some perspective that it isn’t the end of the world.

Personally I find the story of Jefferson’s win pretty inspiring, since it was the first time in our country power was being handed over from one party to the other, and it occurred bloodlessly, in a civilized manner.

You could also talk with him about McCain’s concession speech, and about the role of a principled minority party (maybe with a segue into 1992/4).

How could the masses be that stupid, but then the masses are asses most time. I am just so upset, never thought it would come to this. Someone tell me how Obama won again. What made him win and how could that be.

I used to be a nanny at one time and when you go for an interview, some of the people wanted years of experience for someone to take care of their 3 month old baby and we would laugh because a baby is only a baby for so long and said folks voted to have this man run the country and I have to ask, so how come you did not want the kind of experience that is of great importance for successful governance of the country. I am trying to move on because life goes on, but at present, I just cannot come to terms with this. John McCain is in the best positition to govern and the people failed him. Where is the justice?
