From The Smoking Gun:
OCTOBER 28–Angered that two neighborhood teenagers knocked over a John McCain sign on his lawn, an Ohio man allegedly grabbed a rifle and fired three times at the duo as they sought to drive away from his Warren Township home. Kenneth Rowles, 50, was charged with felonious assault in connection with the Saturday afternoon incident, which resulted in one boy suffering a minor bullet wound. According to a Warren Township Police Department report, Patrick Wise, 16, yelled, “This is for Obama” as he knocked over the McCain sign. Wise’s cousin, Kyree Flowers, 17, was waiting in the passenger seat of the SUV, which was struck by three bullets fired by Rowles. One bullet hit Flowers in the arm, while another shattered the passenger’s and driver’s side windows.
And damn straight he should be charged with felonious assault: a .22 caliber rifle isn’t a freaking toy. It’s a weapon, and unless somebody’s pointing one back at you it should be firmly kept away from any disputes. Thank God no one got killed.
You know what would be nice? A joint statement from the candidates telling their supporters to back off on this. Because I’m getting tired of reading about Molotov cocktails, and hoaxed hate crimes, and shot-up campaign buses, and black eyes at campaign rallies, and pepper spray attacks on campaign workers, and defaced buildings/cars/campaign signs. I understand that even now we’re getting off insanely lightly, compared to the rest of the world – but that just means that the rest of the world’s pretty messed up, sometimes.
Enough is freaking enough.

I was a retread named Zombie Flanders / randomkid. Wednesday, October 29th at 1:02PM EST (link)I am on a college campus…I don’t expect riots, if Obama wins I expect public celebration (of the peaceful type, like random people hugging each other and drunk people (after all it is a Tuesday night) yelling and stuff). If Obama loses I expect just a general melancholy. Similar to what will happen wrt the Phillies in the World Series (except the ridiculous rain thing messing everything up…this is what happens when the World Series is so late in the year). My college is also in a predominantly black area of town, so I expect the feelings to also be present among the townies as well as the students.
As for the article, ugh it seems like there’s more of these stories every day. On both sides, I haven’t been keeping score…

Responsible gun ownership
Jill1066 Wednesday, October 29th at 1:04PM EST (link)The 2nd amendment guarantees law-abiding citizens the opportunity to own firearms. With that comes a huge responsibility to make sure the gun is not used improperly. The homeowner was justly irritated at these vandals, but that does not mean he was justified in firing at them. Every state is a bit different, but I don’t see any state giving a homeowner the right to exit his house to avenge minor property damage by discharging a weapon. My understanding is that if a guy enters your house you can presume hostile intent and act accordingly, but shooting at petty vandals is going to land this guy in legal hot water.
No pity, I don't care which candidate's sign it was.

tankertodd (Diary) Wednesday, October 29th at 1:46PM EST (link)I guess that’s why teenagers shouldn’t be allowed to vote.
Using deadly force on someone for taking a sign or any property is WRONG.
Using deadly force on someone who is unarmed and not a threat is WRONG.
Using deadly force on someone who is fleeing is also WRONG.
A policeman wouldn’t be permitted to use deadly force in these situations. This leaves me to believe that gunowners should be required to understand and agree to standard Rules of Engagement in case this guy is not such an aberration.

of course, you shouldn't shoot someone over a sign
generalgrant Wednesday, October 29th at 1:46PM EST (link)but you also shouldn’t vandalize other people’s property and if you do, then you shouldn’t be surprised if they overreact, especially in this highly-charged emotional environment.
And you might think differently if this had ever happened to you. 4 years ago, my Bush/Cheney sign didn’t even make it one night in front of my house and believe me, I WAS PISSED! I wouldn’t have shot anyone (non-gun owner that I am) if I caught them in the act, but I probably would have tried to hurt them physically and to save my sign and teach them a lesson.
It also sounds as if this dude had his signs vandalized before and these punks were asking for it by yelling at him. Yes, he should be punished because he broke the law, but it isn’t as if he went out randomly looking for someone to shoot. Those punks came onto his property and vandalized his property and provoked him in one of the worst ways imaginable. And those punks should be charged, as well.
I’d also suggest that it isn’t just a sign. It’s political speech and others don’t have a right to come onto your property and stop you from engaging in political speech. It’s beyond mere vandalism, it could rise to the a level of political intimidation, which is an even greater offense….a hate crime, perhaps.

finaljeopardy Wednesday, October 29th at 2:40PM EST (link)McCain had to point out that Obama has chosen to surround himself with radical leftist ideologues who would go so far to damn our country from their pulpit, cheer on 911 terrorists or bomb federal buildings themselves. Obama had long-standing relationships with these people, and he relied on their political support throughout his career. He also collaborated with them on pet projects and steered money to them as a state legislator.
Now we see this was not coincidence; the thread that ties this all together is wealth redistribution. Both Obama’s parents were socialist / communist believers. He’s hard-wired for it. Anyone who thinks there is a sensible moderate deep down inside of Barack Obama is lying to themselves.

ILLINOIS_CONSERV (Diary) Wednesday, October 29th at 5:21PM EST (link)every day of some sort of killing or act of violence that is stupid, sad, unbelievable, unacceptable, sickening, disheartening, etc… every day, across the country, there is violence over silly, petty things that make us just shake our heads with disgust. People killing each other over a pack of cigarettes. Kids killing each other over a new pair of Nike basketball shoes. It isn’t the shoes or the cigarettes. It is a case of a people acting out who are mentally unbalanced. In this instance, it isn’t a case of some otherwise level-headed guy who because he just loves McCain and had his sign ripped down that he decided to shoot at some kids. This a troubled man who has an anger issue or mental issue of some kind and his actions just happened to be triggered by this event. A month from now it could be triggered by someone damaging his mailbox or cutting him off in traffic. While I agree there is NO ROOM for this kind of behavior I also believe that it is not indicative of someone who is just over the top for McCain. He is a sick man who needs help in addressing his mental health issues. And he needs to be incarcerated.
