I am Joe.

Are you Joe?

I am a thirty-eight year old stay-at-home father who lives in Maryland, and who already has a Messiah; I don’t need another who’ll raise my taxes in order to “share the wealth.” My parents never raised me to have a hand out, and I can make my own way, thanks. And while the mistakes that I’ve made in my life are mine, they’re only an excuse to not listen to me if you want ‘em to be.

Like Iowahawk,

I AM JOE.

I’m a 35 year old trauma surgeon in Iowa. I have federally-sponsored student loans which will take years to pay off, but I am the one who worked 80-120 hours per week (for six years) at or below minimum wage to earn my training. I am Joe.

I’m a proud American, who happens to be gay and lives in Manhattan. I also understand that without the privileges and benefits this nation and its government provide, I would not have my paycheck. So yes, I’m willing to pay my fair share.

Until the republicans learn that people like me (an attorney and author living in Manhattan) are also “Joe” they will lose. We are all “Joe.”

I don’t have much right now. I work 60-70 hours a week. My company does not pay me for any hours that I put in beyond 40 hrs.. Most of that work is voluntary on my part to make sure I stay ahead of the curve. Also I want to stop working for my company and start something on my own. Make my hours and my thinking count. I don’t think setting up my own business is fantasy. That’s my dream. I am working towards that dream. If I get my efforts and timing right I should be able to make it. Even if I don’t make it big it won’t be for lack of efforts.

I am taxed and that money is used for welfare by the government for those who don’t work or can’t work is an idea I find hard to stomach. If my money has to go to charity I must make that decision.

I definitely am Joe.

but the point I was trying to make wasnt about WHAT is done with tax monies. And I admit I know I am swimming upstream here at Redstate and I APPRECIATE that moderators allow me to post here by the way…). My point is that paying taxes of and by itself is not some sort of horrible burden imposed upon us. It is a responsibility of all citizens to fund the government which provides necessary services.

Even if you disagree with those services, and/or the efficiency the services are provided (and of course you do, if you are paying attention!) all citizens have a responsibility to pay their fair share. The knee jerk hatred of all taxes is contrary to the American idea of doing your share and shouldering ones responsibility.

No your not. You are Joe's eructation

Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Saturday, October 18th at 10:37AM EST (link)

Usually when folks start sharing their occupation and sexual proclivities as justification for a retort it is mendacity. But that aside, who cares and how does that make you Joe? Frankly, I believe you have rather missed the point.

This economy demands government palliates an already egregious tax burden, which often approaches confiscation. Yet we have one candidate, Obama, revealing his true faith in Marxism as the answer. I suppose his answer is to keep people impecunious, lest they become the evil rich. The more money one makes, the more we will give to your neighbor.

Now that his middle class tax “cut” has been revealed as nothing more then a giant welfare program, Obama calls foul. His plan to tax success and destroy American business would be disastrous at any point, but moreso in our current situation.

However, Obama has told his last lie and in the process provided some rather interesting insight about his vision. It is one that sets neighbor against neighbor or Joe against Joe, if you will. That not only is contrary to American values, the tenets of our Republic and common sense. It is economically destructive, divisive and sophomoric. I just hope enough of the American people, especially our youth, are not beguiled by such irresponsible behavior.

“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

Joe is my 'brother'

Wubbies World (Diary) Saturday, October 18th at 10:40AM EST (link)

Joe is my brother in more ways than most would imagine. They are not the same person physically, but they are the same person in their life stories.

My brother didn’t graduate from high school. He became an unlicensed plumber assistant – like the real Joe.

A few years later, he went to night school and got his GED, followed by more night school for his plumbers license.

In time, he became very good at what he did, and he went to more night school and got his master plumber’s license. Followed shortly by his contractors license.

He now owns his own plumbing company.

Not bad for a high school drop out with a “fantasy”, or more aptly put by us real people, “a dream”. My big brother is a real person, and he has always been my hero who I looked up too. He is the reason why I went back to school for my degree.

Barry Obama and the MSM denigrate and destroy decent people, like my brother, on the 6 O’clock news for sport as long as they obtain the power they want.

My brother is not a perfect man like any of us, and most certainly like me. However, he is a good and decent man who I admire.

Joe is my brother, and he is my role model who I look up too. The MSM wants to destroy my dreams by way of destroying my big brother. These people have no shame or morals and they make me want to puke.

Where there IS disagreement is in the allocation of tax burden and how it is spent.

Fair enough Moe. I am glad that we agree on some basic principals and I respect your different opinion on others.

The problem with "fair share"

paint_it_red (Diary) Saturday, October 18th at 11:31AM EST (link)

Is that neither you nor I get to decide, but the Congress does. The runaway spending of Congress very very obviously cannot be counted on to responsibly spend. They have run up a $10,000,000,000,000.00 debt. They spend without accountability and tax us for even special interest and constituency that will get them elected.

“Fairness” is about giving each their due. But Congess is not oriented towards giving each their due. Its oriented towards staying elected. That’s the way the system is set up. If we do not fight for lower taxes, and demand leaders, particularly a President who will cap spending, take a hatchet and a scalpel to runaway spending, then we all get screwed.

Taxing the crap out of everybody is not the answer man. Taxing the crap out of businesses and driving jobs overseas is not the answer either. Obama’s position on this reflects a failure of understanding of this point. Obama’s vote on the farm bill shows his lack of understanding on this point. Obama’s failure to stand up to the leadership of his own party shows he is not up to the job.

Obama’s failure to state any programs he would cut during the debate reflect this. Instead of naming programs, he did three things. One, he gave the usual, quadrennial b.s. about going line by line through the budget. You know what he will find when he goes line by line? He’ll find a lot of bloated programs that he’s promised not to cut because he’s so beholden to all the special interest groups and constituencies he’s made promises toward. And, what makes anyone think he’ll have the guts to stand up to the special interests behind the spending he “discovers”. He has no history of standing up to these interests.

Two, each time he was asked in the debates what he’d cut, he took the opportunity to segue into a laundry list, a Christmas list of what he’d “prioritize” and not cut. Not really answering the question.

Third, he talked about the cost of the Iraq war. Well, the sunk costs of the past, and his irresponsible foreign policies make it sound as if he would spend more, not less, both in American money and more importantly in American blood.

He’s got $700,000,000,000.00 in new spending on top of the huge deficit we’ve already got. Unlike McCain’s new spending, (which is estimated at $200 billion), most of Obama’s is perennial.

Obama’s energy plan, unlike McCain’s, fails to provide and centerpiece offshore drilling, nuclear power, and increased domestic drilling. While both support wind, solar, wave, alternative fuels, and coal, Obama only supports “clean coal” which is a far more limited source. Obama’s reliance on biofuels is more politically motivated than scientifically justified, and besides giving lip service to 5 million energy jobs, he has not provided any details on how those jobs will be created.

Obama’s support of Pelosi and Reid’s sham energy bill and his support of “use it or lose it” to force energy companies to drill where they’ve leased will further decrease our energy supply. Why? Because a lot of times there is a very good reason oil companies are not drilling there. You see, they already have all the motive they need to drill, the profit motive. But when an environmentalist group holds up drilling for one reason or another, why should the oil company lose their lease? If they choose to explore a more promising venue first, why should they lose their lease? If we merely take away their land where they’ve leased, then the government is doing something illegal in vitiating those contracts and, more likely, decreasing our energy supply by forcing us to devote drilling resources to less promising locations and taking away locations the oil companies would eventually drill in. Does he think someone else will come along and drill in those spots instead? That’s a pipe dream. The most promising drilling places are ANWR, and offshore drilling sites. We have more than enough oil than everything we import if we drilled enough at home.

The consequence?? While McCain will cut quickly into the $700 billion per year we send overseas, Obama will not, and may even increase that number. The deficit grows, and our taxes go up.

And another Obama tax secret is the FICA taxes. Those ultra regressive taxes that screw over lower income Americans will continue to rise, but because they are not technically “income tax” Obama does not count those. Obama has not even given lip service to entitlement reform, predicatably steering clear of the social security and medicare/medicaid third rails of politicis.

So, when you say “fair share”, a lot goes through my mind coming back to the same basic problem. Every American is due, in basic fairness, to have responsible leaders, watchdogs if you will, ensuring their leaders are not running amok as tax and spenders. A tax and spend liberal has no place telling people what their fair share is because he is not that responsible leader. He has failed every test of responsibility along the way.

Like Obama.

So, the more a business makes from these people buying their stuff, the more and more they pay in taxes. So making more money suddenly turns into making less money. So money that would normally get re-invested into growing the business either gets hidden somewhere that it can’t be taxed or goes to the government.

How about this. Cut everyone’s taxes then everyone will have more money to spend and:

A) Business can grow and employ more people so government programs can be cut and the government can lower spending.

and

B) Money moves around a lot more in the public sector (from all of that buying and selling) and is taxed every time it moves so government revenues go up.

So, Joe might get a tax cut, or he might be one of those in the unemployment line.

Doesn’t it strike you as odd that there was no mention of any exemption BEFORE the Obamasiah was caught talking about wealth redistribution?

Only then did we hear that, oh no, Joe wouldn’t get a tax increase, he’s exempt. Yeah that’s the ticket! We didn’t mean EVERYONE who makes over $250K, only those who don’t front us about it will have to pay.

Get in Obama’s face and you won’t have to pay the tax increase either!

Oh, yeah....And...businesses don't pay taxes.

29Victor (Diary) Saturday, October 18th at 1:55PM EST (link)

I almost forgot. Businesses don’t pay taxes, they pass the extra cost (just like any other business cost) on to their customers.

It’s a basic rule of business that Obama and his liberal buddies can’t ever seem to grasp.

Causing prices to rise and sales to fall.

Exception: Big businesses can often suck up a tax increase (or any other cost increase) and keep their prices low long enough to get rid of local small businesses that have to jack up their prices right away to cover costs. Then they can raise their prices even more having gotten rid of the competition.

The first one wasn't bad enough?

I owed more money on my taxes this year than I was able to pay. It was Social Security Taxes (which I know I’ll never see again). I arranged a payment plan with the IRS. My tax burden took priority over paying other bills.

I don’t want a hand-out from Obama to help with my “tax burden,” I want to be able to opt-out of Social Security and instead put the money into something that will be there when I retire.

I hope one day to be one of the people Obama considers “rich,” but the closer I get to that the further away it looks because more and more of my hourly fee goes to the government.

If Obama has his way, by the time I’m “rich” I’ll taking home (after taxes) less than I was when I was “middle class” but working more hours.

There are so few small businesses in America these days because people tend to do as much of their business as possible at the biggest and cheapest places out there. Local electronics workers are out of business to Best Buy, Local hardware store owners are out of business to Home Depot, local restaurants are out of business to Chili’s and the like, and everybody’s out of business to Walmart. Small businesses are disappearing because the American way of doing business is changing. If you’d like, you can lay this change at the feet of Bill Clinton’s economic policies as much as at the feet of the Bush legacy–I personally think both had a hand in it. But it is silly to say that small business is just now going to be threatened by a potential %3 tax increase on earnings over 250K. The death knell of small business was rung a long time ago, and it wasn’t rung by those who would have regulated capitalism, it was rung by those who thought that capitalism could do no wrong.

Not sure how Obama lied. He told Joe his taxes would go up. According to the chart, Joe would still be better off if he was making $280K with either Obama or McCain.

Two points: 1) If Joe is making $280K in a two-man plumbing business in Toledo, Ohio, he’s a genius. Right now, I understand his income is closer to $50K as the employee of the same two-person operation.

2) Perhaps McCain could have found a better example–a person who has worked for a decade building up a small business, working evenings, weekends, birthdays, holidays, etc. Such a person should make more than $250,000 and not be penalized–most Americans don’t begrudge Gates, Jobs, Dell, Waltons, et al because these titans have lived the American Dream. McCain was too lazy or too sloppy to find a real American success story. Maybe because McCain actually disdains those who pursue profits over patriotism.

under Obambam’s plan, he will roll-back Bush’s tax cuts that eliminate Joe’s MARRIAGE PENALTY TAX and the increase in general deductions we are getting under the Bush reductions. The dirty little secret is that the Obama BinBiden will cancel Bush’s tax reductions, repackage some of them as their own (his real, we will give tax cuts plan) but will ultimately see a TAX INCREASE. The Slime, er One, bases his “tax cuts” on the “rolled back amounts” to achieve his “claim” of cutting taxes.

Obama tax plan = smoke and mirrors, for some, and out-right confiscation of income to/of others.

Your knowledge is extremely tenuous. Taxes are directly tied to economic growth. We had tremendous growth in the sixties after a cut in marginal rates, we had even more growth in the eighties with more marginal rate cuts, we had growth in the middle nineties with a capital gains tax cut, and we had growth after the dot com recession with the Bush cuts.

All of these cuts have one thing in common, THE RESULT AFTER INFLATION WAS AN INCREASE IN REVENUES! Therefore the cuts had nothing to do with deficits.

Deficits have to do with spending. Now, you are CORRECT to blame the Bush administration for not vetoing spending, and spendthrift congressmen form both parties for not trying to reign in spending. But at no time did the democrats ever offer any spending cuts, EVER.

As for the present financial crises. There was certainly precious little free market involved. It was caused, 80-90% by actions of congress changing the rules for issuing sound mortgages. And also screwing around with the accounting rules.

It proves my point. That taxes would be LOWERED under Obama’s plan, not raised. Under the assumption that the $280K that Joe quoted was an after business tax quote (which is probably not the case), his taxes would go down under both scenarios. And if the $280K is BEFORE deducting business expenses (seems far more likely for a 2 man plumbing company…), it would go down more under Obama’s plan than under McCain’s.

I guess my point is that Joe is NOT an example of a guy who will have his taxes raised under Obama…so maybe it would be best to stop falsely claiming him as such.

The latest Obamination

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Saturday, October 18th at 3:51PM EST (link)

Obambam is out on the trail again trying to CHANGE (obscure) and distract from his original admission of being a Champion of Socialism. He mixes and matches, at his leisure, the different Taxes. He keeps trying to dodge the fact that his FEDERAL INCOME TAX PROGRAM will be WELFARE, by taking more Federal Income Tax from many, to redistribute TO several WHO PAY NONE!

His dodge now?!?! To obscure the issue by pointing out that some of those who will be receiving his Welfare checks pay Payroll Taxes. So, basically he wants to subsidize some folks’ Social Security obligation!!! If the moron is concerned about the unfairness of how expensive Social Security, Medicare, State and City taxes, etc…. all are on our Paychecks – why doesn’t he put forth a tax plan to provide an exemption to ALL (that is FAIR) for say the first $10,000 we all make. No-one pays any tax of any kind, by Federal mandate (the kind Liberals/Socialists love) on the first $10,000.

Better yet, how about we finally tie Taxation to the Minimum Wage?!?!? If it is indeed the Minimum Wage, why shouldn’t everyone get to keep each and every penny of that Wage?!?!
MinWage * 40 hours * 52 weeks = Exempt Income – PERIOD!!!
Of course, never gonna happen as it doesn’t allow Liberals to play with the tax-code and disguise WELFARE as TAX CUT. That would be the ONLY way I’d support the notion of a Minimum Wage (still reluctantly), if Tax Exemption was tied to it. Everyone truly benefits from it then.

We keep hearing the Lib’s blame Republicans with “distraction” politics. All the MSM does is attempt to “distract” everyone away from Lib/Leftist/Socialist (oops, sorry, it’s called “Progressive” these days) plans. In this case by avoiding Obama’s “spread the wealth” comment by attacking “Joe the Plumber.”

Talk is cheap and results can be observed objectively. Republicans have been in control of the White house for 8 years and Congress for 6 of the past 8 years. Yeah. Ya got me. I went back and watched the vid again. Obama never said that he would lower Joe’s taxes more than McCain would, that’s just what I’ve heard from the left since then.

But it’s really not about who Joe is or how much he makes (I keep getting drawn into that discussion), it’s about Obama wanting to “spread the wealth around.”

Wealth that isn’t his. Wealth that other people worked hard for and Obama wants to take so that he can spend it his way instead of letting Joe spend it the way Joe thinks it should be spent.

And no one is saying (at least, not too many people are saying) that Obama would raise Joe’s taxes at this time. But:

1) If Joe does manage to grow his business to a decent size, he will be punished by Obama for his success.

2) Why should the “rich” pay for middle class tax cuts for Joe or anyone else?

3) If Joe winds up ending his life with over $1,000,000 in assets then Obama wants to tax anything over that mill at 50%. So, if Joe is successful, he winds up having half of it (after the mill) taken away in the end.

But this isn’t what Iowahawk’s article is about either, what Iowahawk’s article is about is that anyone who in any way makes Obama look bad (even if it’s by getting Obama to show his true colors) becomes an instant target of the left and the MSM. And, if Obama manages to get elected and the MSM doesn’t amend their ways but continues to go after Obama’s foes in this way while treating Obama like he can do no wrong, America will become a very different place.

I'm NOT Joe

Jeff Weimer (Diary) Saturday, October 18th at 5:10PM EST (link)

But I want to be.

I’m in that 40% who don’t pay income tax and get extra money from the Feds every year. It’s wrong and I want it to stop. There should be NO refundables in the tax code. I don’t want Obama to share the wealth with me. I want him to leave me alone.

I found this, it’s a do-it-yourself bumper sticker.. I’m not recommending it or anything, it’s just the first one that popped up on Google. At least we now know there is something out there.

Maybe Office Depot would have something.

Joe still opposes Obama’s tax policies

During his telephone interview with ABC News, the Ohio plumber argued that the government should not tax some Americans at a higher percentage than others and argued that this principle should extend not only to taxpayers at his income-level but also to the world’s richest man.

“I don’t like it,” said Wurzelbacher. “You know, me or — you know, Bill Gates, I don’t care who you are. If you worked for it, if it was your idea, and you implemented it, it’s not right for someone to decide you made too much.”

The thing you libs don't understand about your candidates and taxes is that they ALWAYS LIE about not raising them.

Tim_Schieferecke (Diary) Saturday, October 18th at 7:06PM EST (link)

When Clinton was running for Prez, he said he would not raise taxes. Remember his “it’s about the economy stupid” quote that defeated GHWB? What did he do before his 5th cigar in the White House? Why, he RAISED EVERYONES’ TAXES IN THE BIGGEST TAX HIKE UP TO THAT POINT. Obama can say whatever he wants to say about taxes. We don’t believe him because he is a proven bold faced liar. If elected, Obama will be exponentially worse than Clinton on the sociopath scale because he can always race bait when he’s backed into a corner. Nope that boat don’t float. He may get elected, but don’t insult us with his agitprop about holding down taxes.

So if you can't win an argument on its merits...

txaggies911 Saturday, October 18th at 7:29PM EST (link)

you just change it? We start out talking about the impact of the two plans on Joe the Plumber. You ultimately seem to come to the rational conclusion that Obama’s plan is actually the one better for most all the Joes of the world, including this one. So you just fall back on, “Well, he’s not gonna really do that.”

It’s a fine argument, sure, but with no real evidence to support it other than the fact that one other guy who was a Democrat did so. I could just as easily point to GHWB raising taxes as proof that McCain won’t lower taxes. Equally legitimate argument now that I think of it.

But the point originally was a comparison of the two proposals as they relate to Joe the Plumber and the millions like him…and on those terms, they come out better under the Obama tax plan. Just facts.

Fair share definition

GregInFla (Diary) Saturday, October 18th at 7:31PM EST (link)

We can start defining “fair share”:
If you == former CEO of FNMA, share is 100% of retirement package, plus backtaxes of 80% on all current possessions

With Socialism, there are no taxes

GregInFla (Diary) Saturday, October 18th at 7:32PM EST (link)

You just a get check from the government to cover your needs. Of course, you get no paycheck. It all gets taxes at 100%.

Excellent tax proposals

GregInFla (Diary) Saturday, October 18th at 8:03PM EST (link)

I had never thought about it that way (the min wage theory). By the way, Obama voted AGAINST the increase in the federal minimum wage in 2007. I am not sure why that is not brought up more often. (To explain, the Dem leaders added it to an Iraq funding bill. GOP voted for it, Hillary and Obambam voted against it. )

I am starting to think that ObamabinBiden plan is to tax everything over 500K at 100%. They did the math, and are sure it will fund all his socialist dreams.

One problem: they do not take into account people’s responses to tax policies. It would turn out that no one would make over $500K if they got to keep none of it. How unpatriotic! In response, they will likely just tax at 100% the first $500K people make, and blame the rich.

Just Keep Repeating, "Spread the Wealth Around"

Spartan4Life (Diary) Sunday, October 19th at 7:31AM EST (link)

It kind of gives you a gut reaction, doesn’t it? Most Americans know it is their wealth that usually gets spread around to someone else.

Obama blew it by letting his inner Socialist out. Now his supporters are scrambling around saying this thing is over. Let’s just see if freedom loving Americans feel the same way.

Agree, Vic

vernonia Sunday, October 19th at 10:02AM EST (link)

Whether someone is earning $50K or $500K, if they’ve earned it honestly by providing goods or services people actually want, they shouldn’t be compelled to “share” it.

The redistributionists believe wealth is “distributed”, or handed out, not earned. Some believe that those who have more money can “afford it” or that the wealthy derive more benefit from having a stable society and a functioning government, so they should pay more. This is the “you’ve-got-more-to-lose” school of progressive taxation: Pay more to maintain the existing social order that you’re thriving in.
