I have had it reported to me – at third hand, which means that you can ignore the rest of this post forthwith with no complaints from me, if you like – that Senator Barack Obama is thinking about offering the Secretary of the Treasury position in his hypothetical administration to former Harvard President Laurence Summers. He’s one of Obama’s economic advisors, which certainly puts him on the short list – so let’s talk about it a little.
Laurence Summers is, of course, an economist (he was one of Clinton’s SEcTreas, in fact, so he’s clearly familiar with the job description). He’s been long linked with being pro-globalization and free trade (this particular article may represent a clarification of those stances, but it doesn’t exactly qualify as a walk-back): his other laudable qualities also include a refreshing willingness to acknowledge the links between Israeli divestment efforts and anti-Semitism; his open support of the Harvard ROTC program; and, of course, his attempt, however clumsy and ultimately futile, to actually not have to take people like Cornell West seriously in public. Put all another way, this would actually be a good choice by Senator Obama, should he win the election: the markets really want some reassurance that he’s not going to listen to the progressives on economic policy, and Summers would be a sign that, yes, Obama takes them no more seriously than you, I, or any other sane human being. Not a perfect choice (one of my colleagues calls it ‘a least-bad choice’, in fact), but not the worst one in the world, either.

PS: Bringing up an old dispute: while personally I (as the husband of a woman with a doctorate in aerospace engineering) find Summers’ musings on “issues of intrinsic aptitude” to be at best slightly problematic, his views on this issue will of course have no effect on Obama’s decision one way or the other. Those comments of Summers were made in 2005, when Left-feminism still made some pretense to adhering to its publicly avowed goals and beliefs; but this is 2008, and things have changed. Most notably, this election cycle has destroyed the credibility of gender feminists as being anything but fully-controlled servants of the Democratic Party for once and for all. If Summers gets the nod, expect no outrage from his old foes. In fact, I expect that Barack Obama will expect them to praise him for his decision.
And they no doubt will.

CroakerNorge (Diary) Tuesday, October 14th at 2:23PM EST (link)Feminists have been bought and paid for by abortion. No other issue defines the needs of women more than that single issue. The woman vote has become a single issue voting block. You can certainly forget equal pay, especially in the Obama campaign.
Who said so? Women did. Every time they slimed Palin.

Generalities

Yea Right!

Never Give In, Never, Never, Never
Does speculating on Obama's pick mean we are ceding something?
Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Tuesday, October 14th at 4:22PM EST (link)Just asking, because after all I am just an observer here.
Certainly, my intention is not to create a foofaraw. Nonetheless, I have surmised that perhaps Karl Marx would be cloned and appointed; anything less may otherwise grab my attention.
In following, since a great deal of our brethren have embraced socialism and higher taxes vis-à-vis Obama’s economic “plan” (quotes intentional, sort of like the Five Year Plan)as their preferred role to hell, you will have to forgive me if Larry seems, well, a moderate in that school of thought.
Basic free market economic precepts have no place in this dialogue. This is about government giveaways restated as tax cuts, socialized healthcare as a new entitlement (oh, yes it is free! Right?) and class warfare based on taxing success (Marxist’s always need an enemy of state, you know).
Was that a rant? Yes, I suppose it was; don’t bother- 40 lashes and all that on me.
“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

2) If Obamamaniacs think the election is in the bag, it won’t be worth putting the bong down to actually make it to the polls.
Not particularly, Marcus_Traianus.
Moe Lane (Diary) Tuesday, October 14th at 5:32PM EST (link)It was an interesting rumor, with some very funny (to me) implications about it, so I wrote it up. That’s all.

you wrote "Summers" my mind read "Sinclair"
David Hinz (Diary) Tuesday, October 14th at 5:52PM EST (link)I thought “WOW! That is magnanimous of him!”
but, of course, I was wrong. I suppose Summers is leftist enough in his economic theories to mollify the Democrats.
