The students of Aledo High School in Texas give us a moment of grace.

And a reminder.

Not going to lecture anybody on this one: you either get it, or you don’t. If you don’t, then I regret whatever it was that cut that bit out of you, and I sincerely hope that you get better some day.

Aledo High seniors pick classmate with Down syndrome as homecoming queen

Never has the selection of a homecoming queen sent so many tears falling so freely.

Kristin Pass, an 18-year-old senior with Down syndrome, became Aledo High School’s homecoming queen Friday to a joyous standing ovation and the flutter of a thousand tissues on a remarkable night for an amazing young woman.

Her grandfather, Dr. David Campbell of Corsicana, escorted her onto the field and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek as Kristin joined eight other young women in the Homecoming Court to await the results of the vote, cast by the 360-plus members of Aledo High’s senior class.

Very Nice

It just doesn’t get any better than that. Good for those students at that school.

I never thought the day would come when I would agree wholeheartedly with a post of yours.

I was wrong.

Classy post.

Beautiful...

Knowing that mothers are encouraged to terminate downs syndrome pregnancies in today’s society makes this story an amazing testimony to what is still good in our society. I am of the firm belief that God does not make mistakes when granting life and to think that there is something inherently wrong with having an extra chromosome such as this beautiful young lady in Texas is nothing more than pure evil.

God Bless Texas… (Was hard to say coming from a Kansan.)

That was a great article and post. It is things like this that give me hope for our future.

Aledo is about 40 miles from me, and out of my normal circulation, therefore I don’t know all that much about the town.

This is what Texas is like....

izoneguy (Diary) Monday, October 13th at 11:25AM EST (link)

….all of the time. My kids play with downs syndrome children on their sports teams, in their scouting activities and in school.
The kids here do not consider special needs kids any different than any other kids. Texas is full of wonderful people and I would not consider living anywhere else.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Thanks, Moe.

truly a moment of grace in an increasingly disgraceful world.

I read recently that in the UK fully half of all abortions where Downs is given as the reason the post-mortem shows the baby to have been perfectly normal.

Affirmative Action

Typical liberal touchy-feely affirmative action BS.

This girl never would’ve won a Homecoming Queen contest if it weren’t for her disability.

What ever happened to a meritocracy?

This is nothing new

Homecoming queen and king titles are bestowed on students with DS more than you can imagine.

http://www.google.com/search?q=down+syndrome+homecoming+queen+king&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=utf8&oe=utf8

People with DS have such a unique wisdom to offer society, and more and more student bodies are becoming aware of this fact.

Maybe my son will be recognized as such one day :)

Thank you for posting this, I never get tired of reading stories like this.

Interesting

I have observed something of a trend towards students with disabilities winning homecomming titles over the last few years.

Did you actually read the linked article?

Elizabeth (Diary) Monday, October 13th at 12:59PM EST (link)

Please note that she didn’t win the top academic student award. Homecoming queen is not a meritocratic award; usually it’s a popularity contest. Most of the students who were quoted in the article voted for her because she was such a nice person who loved everyone she came in contact with. This is not an uncommon description of people with Down Syndrome.

“‘You come of the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve,’ said Aslan. ‘And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth. Be content.’” — C.S. Lewis’ “Prince Caspian”

You do know how these things work right?

NickLevi86 (Diary) Monday, October 13th at 1:10PM EST (link)

Homecoming is a popularity deal. Would you rather have a socialite flake?

At my college, homecoming king was just about guaranteed to the Student President each year. The one exception? A chap with physical/mental disability, but who had a prodigious memory. He knew everyone on campus on a first name basis and everything they ever told him about themselves. He still is a local fixture.

He would have won without the disability, but then he may have been elected Student President at that point too.

My daughter graduated last year from a small Louisiana High School. At the Senior Prom when they announced the Prom King, the winner said he would like to pass his scepter and crown over to someone else – he called up a learning disabled senior and crowned him. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
