Right now, this is a web ad:
It’s not going to stay one: it’s actually 90 seconds and has the McCain “I approved this message” added on, which means that (as Ed notes) you should expect to see it in TV ads pretty, pretty soon. Ed also notes that this is going to guarantee that we’re going to hear about it in the debate: Obama rather publicly challenged McCain to say it to his face, and I think that McCain will be rather happy to oblige him.
Moe Lane
PS: I understand that certain Obama activists have been programmed to squawk “Keating Five!” whenever the word “Ayers” comes up. Anyone who chooses to do so in this thread must include this sentence, word for word, with the link, and with no attempts to warp the meaning:
“Of course, this attack is hypocritical of both me and Senator Obama, since the Senator is happy to let fellow Keating Five member John Glenn campaign for him in Ohio.”
Thanks in advance!

Its like a horror movie, it starts out with what sounds like a childs lullaby in the backround and then the music gets really dark and so does the tone of the announcer. Powerful ad but it won’t change like-minded far left liberals’ perception of Obama. Many of the old hippies are thrilled that Barack has been influenced by The Weathermen and other socialist and Marxist mentors. The average Joe Democrat has been taught to believe everything is a right wing conspiracy.
Hopefully, the message will get through to independents and moderates. (crossing my fingers)
Bernadette Dohrn is a very dangerous woman. Michelle Malkin, back in April, quoted this website:
At a 1969 “War Council” in Flint, Michigan, Dohrn gave her most memorable and notorious speech to her followers. Holding her fingers in what became the Weatherman “fork salute,” she said of the bloody murders recently committed by the Manson Family in which the pregnant actress Sharon Tate and a Folgers Coffee heiress and several other inhabitants of a Benedict Canyon mansion were brutally stabbed to death:
“Dig it! First they killed those pigs, then they ate dinner in the same room with them. They even shoved a fork into the victim’s stomach! Wild!” The “War Council” ended with a formal declaration of war against “AmeriKKKa,” always spelled with three K’s to signify the United States’ allegedly ineradicable white racism.
More here. The AmeriKKKa part gave me pause and additional concern, wasn’t that the way Reverend Wright referred to our country?
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of “liberalism,” they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” – Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

SEATOR OBAMA SUPPORTED THIS RADICAL, HE SUPPORTED THIS ODINGA AND WE HAVE THE ACTUAL E-MAILS, WE HAVE THE PROOF THAT A SITTING SENATOR, OBAMA, FROM HIS SENATE OFFICE HAS PHONED ENCOURAGMENT AND ADVICE! We have an active Senator, from his TAXPAYER PAID OFFICE ON OUR DIME CALLING AND E-MAILING A RADICAL IN KENYA DURING THE NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARIES! This whole mosaic with Ayers and ACORN and the Panther 21 and the 60s all fits together too nicely if you ask me. I think Obama is a stealth candidate hand picked by the most radical elements in the American left to take over our government. What is shocking is how easy they are doing it and how close they are to getting away with it. By running on a “Change!” mantle, they will be getting carte blanche to implement whatever screwy ideas they have whether it be in foriegn affairs, education, or the economy. All they will have to say is, “You wanted change. Here’s some change for you.”

You can say it is an incorrect opinion, but if you do you better express WHY you think it is incorrect rather than just say “they know better than you do”.
We will find out in a month if they know better than others. I’m just getting a bit ticked off that the McCain campaign will not focus on the dangerous positions of Obama and instead focus completely on his character.

Let’s assume this sort of thing works and John McCain is elected our next President. He will have to face fairly large Democratic majorities in both Houses of Congress in 2009. What are the odds his legislative agenda goes anywhere, anywhere at all, after this strategy? I know he’s been disliked hereabouts for his willingness to work with Democrats (campaign finance, immigration, etc), but do you really think those same Senators will work with him again?
I understand you folks want to win, and I take no issue with that. I just wonder if anybody realizes that this will make getting anything done pretty freaking difficult. Yes, I am well aware of the benefits of divided government and gridlock and so forth. When things are working reasonably well it’s a bad thing to have a federal government that can’t change things too much. Given Senator McCain’s legislative agenda will have to get through a Democratic Congress that watched this campaign with rapt attention, how much can he conceivably get done? How many of the sorts of judges you guys want on the bench can he get confirmed?
Again, please respond substantively.

For starters, earmarks
Finrod (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 11:55AM EST (link)McCain has vowed to veto bills with earmarks while President. Since Dems are not going to have anywhere near 2/3rds of both houses of Congress, this will start a staredown contest that Congress will not win.
Not all agendas are ‘must get this passed’. Some are ‘I will stop this’, which McCain will be able to do as long as he sticks to his guns.
Let’s get down to brass tacks here. How much for the ape?
Han, two points here: If McCain wins this,
janis (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 11:57AM EST (link)there is no reason to believe that the Republicans can’t also pick up some seats in the House and maybe even the Senate. After all, given the strong headwinds from the media and the Left against McCain/Palin, for the two of them to be elected means that the electorate isn’t buying what your side is selling.
Point two: If we are in gridlock for two years until the 2010 election, then at least we won’t be seeing Obama’s plans implemented across the board. That’s a huge plus right there.
The whole idea, Hans,
Achance (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 11:59AM EST (link)is that we don’t want anything done by a Democrat controlled Congress that they can get done with a mere majority. It has to be moderated enough or important enough that the Rs will come aboard and if necessary even give a veto proof vote.
If they get Obama, all we have is the filibuster. Even, God forbid, they get 60 votes in the Senate, there will be some D senators who’ll have their career indicator lights flashing if they vote for some of the crazier things D interest groups want done.

Not really, nikolai. You see, I know two things about Walter Annenberg that your handlers forgot to spoon-feed you.
Moe Lane (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 12:01PM EST (link)One, that he was President of the Annenberg Foundation, and not involved in the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (which, by the way, shut down in 2001) past giving it big gobs of money.
Second, I know that Walter Annenberg died in 2002. His wife never had anything to do with the Challenge, either.
So, the fact that a notorious domestic terrorist like Ayers took advantage of Annenberg’s decision to give Gregorian free rein over spending doesn’t really signify, but thanks for playing.

Just off the cuff,
Uma Richie (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 12:05PM EST (link)I’d say the gridlock you mentioned could advance Sen. McCain’s goal of a spending freeze.
I’m curious as to how We the People deal with Congress in the next two years. The institution is clearly broken while the incumbency effect remains strong. The Congressional term limits proposal, which I continue to support, failed in 1995, and I believe I am still in the minority.
If we all still despise Congress and McCain/Palin aggressively push reform directly to the American people, individual Congress members may have no choice but to go along with it.
Sen. McCain does need to be aware of the Alinsky maneuver, whereby the Democrats would use his stated value of Bipartisanship against him, and to call them out on it if they try.
But the question wasn't
Reaper0Bot0 (formerly Han_Pritcher) (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 12:11PM EST (link)Why do you prefer a McCain administration. I know the answer to THAT. The question was what can McCain accomplish other than gridlock if he’s elected in this fashion.
The Senate will never confirm the judges McCain would want after this. It would have been rather difficult before, but it’s absolutely impossible now.
I can certainly understand how gridlock is better than an Obama administration from your perspective. I’m just curious to see if you folks realize that this will be a more pyrrhic victory than you might like. Senator McCain does indeed have a record of bipartisanship on several issues, but I just don’t see how that will continue after this.

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 12:25PM EST (link)I live in a liberal hotspot, Boston. There is always this compulsion that government is there to solve everything. I dont want government to do much. Active government is not the measure. Constutional and responsible government is the measure.
Plus, we are backing McCain because unchecked one party liberal government would be disasterous. The victory would not be pyrric because it stops the liberal tide and sets conservatives up of the future.
In a two party system, there is always an ebb and flow. People get sick of whatever party is in power. McCain is not much of a conservative and liberals congress will prevent any conservtive intitiatives. T
his sets up our bench for 2010, 2012 or beyond. COnservatism will be new and fresh. Palin, Jindal and comapny can run under the precept that we have not had real conservative government in years.
That's something
Reaper0Bot0 (formerly Han_Pritcher) (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 12:26PM EST (link)That I would think regular voters on either side could agree on. Uma Richie (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 12:32PM EST (link)I wrote my State Legislator last week. He’s just like Gov. Palin — A self-made, first-termer, concerned citizen. My point was that Congress is broken, term limits failed, corrupt incumbents continue to be reelected. My feeling is that the state legislatures are our last best hope as a check on Congress through the recall system.
If we elect a President who vetoes all earmarks, we will be able to free the state legislatures, who in most states redraw the district lines, from the pork barrel influence of Congress. In that case, they may be persuaded to alter the boundaries so radically that challengers have at least some chance of winning in the xxx2 election years.
Considering that many state legislators entertain thoughts of a Congressional run, it could work.
We keep the war won, Han.
Moe Lane (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 12:34PM EST (link)I don’t trust Obama not to lose it. It's a huge difference on judges
JoeG Thursday, October 9th at 1:02PM EST (link)No, a Roberts or a Alito won’t get through the new Senate.
But McCain will try to get as conservative as possible when picking a judge that can get through the Senate.
Obama would put someone to the left of Ginsburg and Breyer to replace them (both are getting old and know it’s there chance to be replaced).
That is a difference.
There are tools, Han, that GWB wouldn't use
Achance (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 1:08PM EST (link)that in what has become an ever more hostile climate, McCain might. GWB was never willing to use either the executive branch’s power or the veto pen to bring Congress into line. GWB was never willing to threaten or actually send the FBI to peek under the skirts of particularly obnoxious interests or members of Congress. If the Public Integrity Section had spent half as much effort on ACORN as it has on some penny ante corruption here in Alaska, we wouldn’t be facing a level of voter fraud that quite literally makes a coup d’etat possible.
There are all sorts of ways to force Senators to give you a vote on nominees, GWB just wouldn’t play hardball. Maybe McCain will.

Rally In Wisconsin Today: McCain/Palin Unleashed
Strelnikov (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 1:11PM EST (link)Even Rush Limbaugh, now calling McCain Yosemite Sam, broadcast a feed from the Wisconsin rally at 2:10 P.M EST, where McCain called Barney Frank and Chris Dodd “willing co-conspirators” in causing the banking crisis.
The response came as an answer to a realtor’s question about investigating and prosecuting the people responsible: McCain said it is a “matter of record” that Obama said such sub-prime loans were just fine with him.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
Maybe, maybe not
Finrod (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 1:21PM EST (link)The Senate will never confirm the judges McCain would want after this. It would have been rather difficult before, but it’s absolutely impossible now.
I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Bush Sr. managed to win a close vote (52-48 IIRC) against a Dem Senate to get Clarence Thomas confirmed to the Supreme Court.
Let’s get down to brass tacks here. How much for the ape?
this is a mistake
zebrapants Thursday, October 9th at 1:33PM EST (link)McCain needs to come up with something new about the economic crisis. I don’t know if his recent housing proposal is it, or if its something else, but he needs to be talking more about it.
Maybe your town is different than mine, but right now word of mouth is 100% the economy. I know McCain wants change the subject, but right now that’s almost impossible.
If he focuses his campaign on ayers et al, he opens himself up to accusations of being out-of-touch on the economy. Economic issues aren’t polling well for him, but given current events, I just don’t think he can effectively change the subject.

No, McCain Apparently Does NOT Want To Change The Subject!
Strelnikov (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 1:47PM EST (link)Check out his remarks today in Wisconsin!
I will agree that besides attacking the Dems for causing this, he needs to have a positive message to counter-balance it, e.g. Steve Forbes’ idea of a simplifying tax cut to make American business competitive with many other countries, whose rates are under 20%.

Interesting Take on the Obama-Ayers connection
Lara Thursday, October 9th at 4:57PM EST (link)I obviously have no idea whether this is true, but I came across it on NoQuarter. If this is an accurate description of the relationship between Ayers and obama, we only have seen the tip of the iceberg and it makes me really nervous as t what may happen if Obama were to be elected. Here’s the post
Quote from NoQuarter:
“I fear it’s (the Ayers/Obama connection) worse than any of us realize. I have absolutely no way of substantiating any of the rumors out there, but I wonder why no one is talking from Obama’s missing years at Columbia in NY?
Some things I’ve heard:
-Obama was introduced to Ayers by his communist childhood mentor Frank in 1981. Supposedly Frank was instrumental in getting Barack to transfer from Occidental to Columbia in NY to be near Ayers. He was a lost teeanger at the time that needed guidance. His grades at Occidental were not good.
-He took 4 years to get through what should have been a 2-yr. program at Columbia to finish his undergrad degree. Where did he live in NY? Who were his friends? How did he pay for housing, etc.? These are lost years that no one can find any info. on.
-This is the really weird part. Supposedly Barack lived quite the “bi” lifestyle in NY, including a physical relationship with Bill Ayers. If so, again where are the witnesses to his time in NY?
-Bill Ayers supposedly helped Barack with money from that point on. He set him up in Chicago after graduation and the rest is history.
If an 1/8 of this is true, it scares me to death what will happen to this country if Barack is elected.”

Lara Thursday, October 9th at 5:19PM EST (link)The bisexual thing is the least of my concerns. I would assume if it were true more people would have come forward, and I don’t really care.
I just don’t understand the total lack of people from his past coming forward in general from his time in NY…no friends to even talk about how great he was then or what he was doing all that time. He should have graduated in 1983 from Columbia, but showed up in Chicago for his first job in 1985 (stayed until 1988). What was he doing in NY all that time? Who hired him in his first job as a community organizer in Chicago? Who was he actually working for as a community organizer? Why Chicago? Is it just a coincidence that Ayers was at Columbia at the same time?

BlueLandRed (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 5:25PM EST (link)but the Obama campaign simply hasn’t made signs a top priority. I live in California east of Oakland… very blue country and getting bluer… and this place should be filled with Obama signs. Driving around yesterday I saw two.

BlueLandRed (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 5:30PM EST (link)don’t look good for either the House or the Senate. Sure, there is time to turn things around and polls are just that, polls.
Still, the polls are showing an approximate 5 seat loss in the Senate and maybe a 10 to 15 seat loss in the House.
So while I think it unlikely that President McCain can drive his agenda much better than Bush has done in the past two years, the results will certain be better than if Barry gets elected.

Han, the Democrats have had the majority for 2 years.
Mord (Diary) Thursday, October 9th at 5:42PM EST (link)George (the worst president in history democrats say) Bush has recieved every single thing he has asked for since 2006.
-continued funding for the Iraq war after Democrats vowed to stop it in order to win the majority? yup.
-passing FISA after Democrats vowed to stop it? yup. Obama himself vowed to filibuster that one but we all know how well he stands by his word.
-The Surge.
-offshore drilling ban has expired thanks to Republican efforts, Democratic inaction, and GWB leading the way….gas prices have dropped steadily since the day that our President lifted the executive ban on offshore drilling and challenged congress to do the same.
I don’t think Democrats have the spine to tangle with President McCain, nevermind Saracuda. Do you think McCain would hesitate to use the bully pulpit and call out names after he wins an election polluted with so much obvious media bias, in an era that should histoically favor Democrats? What would he have to lose? It’s not like the media or democrats in general could hate him even more than they alredy will. If McCain wins, blue dog Democrats will know that they will be re-elected based on their voting record after November 4th and will vote accordingly if they value their jobs over party agenda.
In my opinion, this is why Old Media has lost all pretense of objectivity this year. Obama’s loss could deal a deathblow to liberalisim. I mean, seriously….the entire mainstream media allowed themselves to get scooped on the biggest political story of the election by a supermarket tabloid that makes money taking pictures of celebrities without makeup. That alone is a testament to how much they believe is at stake.

Elizabeth Hasselhof suggestion
mamomformccain Thursday, October 9th at 5:43PM EST (link)Hi, I’m a busy mom of teens trying to start a new business to help the local economy (great timing, heh?) so pardon me if I am repeating something that was said already…
Today, home resting after a medical procedure, I dared to put on the VIEW (as if I didn’t feel crappy enough already). I won’t waste time talking about how brainwashed those women are. How Elizabeth Hasselhof can’t stand it I don’t know. Anyway, cut to the chase, when Elizabeth mentioned Obama’s shady past contacts, the comment was made that no one is perfect, McCain included, referencing the Keating 5 I’m sure. Anyway, Elizabeth said to list the contacts and questionable issues (my wording) for the two men side by side and I thought, literally, that ought to be done. Any idea where to best suggest that?
Also, again, pardon my limited political knowledge, but wasn’t the swift boat thing that “sunk” John Kerry spearheaded by a group besides Bush’ election committee? Meaning, couldn’t the needed pushing for answers on Obama’s character and integrity be spearheaded by a group besides the Elect McCain committee so that they can focus on the issues of the economy and the rest of MCain’s platform for his candidacy… Also, such an effort could even point out how people who have nothing to hide should provide answers to the questions directed to them. Lastly, character, integrity, trust and honesty, these are traits I continually read are vital to a successful entrepreneur and leader… Vital to our president as well…This too should be stressed. Indeed, no one is perfect, but honesty and transparency and even regret for past mistakes should all be expected.
Any suggestions for websites to post these suggestions on would be appreciated. It’s the least I can do.
Thanks.
p.s. I’ve heard that Obama wrote a recommendation for Ayer’s book in 1999 or 2000 (i.e. when he was older than 8)… I clipping of that recommendation along with Ayer’s quotes from 2001 that he wished he had done more to harm the US would be quite effective, in my opinion.

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Friday, October 10th at 7:29AM EST (link)Obama again made a “flat out lie” when he said that Ayers have already repented from his old ways. It seems that Ayers’ business of terrorism, socialism and communism is growing and spreading in Latin America.
IBD Editorial has provided additional information on the same. Here’s the article: Ayers Has Not Left Radicalism Behind
Below is the interesting portion of that article that shows:
1. Ayer’s is not a repentant domestic terrorist.
I remember a recent video of Ayers and Dorn’s interview when Ayers and Dorn missed those years of bombing while a leader of Weatherman.
2. Obama, by working for Annenberg Challenge and Woods Funds are NOT JUST ASSOCIATED BUT A SUPPORTER AND PROTEGE OF AYERS.
*3. Ayers’ efforts education have been influential in spreading communism and socialism in Latin America. *
4. Ayers’ Stepson has Close Venezuelan Ties too. Sweet!
Bill Ayers is therefore a much bigger and more relevant socio-political issue to Obama as compared to Obama’s tie with Rev. Wright.
Be Smart, Do Your Own Research
ssammyg Friday, October 10th at 8:05AM EST (link)Not being an American and being someone with nothing to gain or lose from the US Presidential elections, I think I have a very impartial view to share with you all.
I’ll be the first to admit that Obama’s past associations are a bit disturbing. But nothing to drive people crazy about. He’s always been on the periphery of all those associations with ACORN, Ayers, Wright etc. If Republicans think it’s fair game to attack his judgement and character, is it fair game to attack McCain/Palin in the same way? I ask because we all know that all Politicians have skeletons in their closets, don’t they.
McCain started out on the high road, saying he wasn’t going to get into scathing attacks. You can tell that he’s uncomfortable doing the things he’s been doing lately. If you openly say you’re not going to focus your campaign on character issues but rather on the economy, is it fair to criticize your character/judgement when you turn around and pursue the same tactics you condemned the day before?
As far as the attacks go, well, let’s just say we should not be surprised if the Democrats start bringing up more character/judgement issues with regards to McCain/Palin. Are we going to see more Keating ads or are we going to see any ads shedding the light on Palin’s association with the Alaskan Independence Party to which her husband used to be a member? If that’s brought up, that could really hurt McCain because if judgement/character is the issue, then he’s shown really bad judgement by picking a running mate who supports a party that advocates secession of their state from the United States.
I’ve really been disappointed with the questions being asked of Obama lately by the GOP. Disappointed because it seems desperate and quite rightfully so because the polls don’t favor McCain/Palin right now. But, senator McCain has every right to ask these questions. Americans should be concerned about a presidential candidate who has a long list of questionable associates.
As a very impartial observer of the current state of world affairs, I just don’t think scathing attacks are the way to go. But if this is what both parties choose to do at this point, all voters should try not to be lazy and do the hard work it takes to educate themselves by doing their own research. THat way, they’ll be better prepared to make a decision they can live with come Nov 4th.
Excellent advice, ssammyg. You first.
Moe Lane (Diary) Friday, October 10th at 8:14AM EST (link)750 words on the Keating Five – emphasis on Senators McCain and Glenn, with an examination of why Obama would complain about the former while using the latter for campaigning – and 500 on the AIP, with an examination of Alaskan politics of the late 90s (not to mention the actual membership of the relevant individuals). Actually, make that 1,000: the other 500 will be on the difference between the AIP and the Weathermen (hint: include the phrase “tried to blow up servicemen at a dance.”
Write it up, send it in, and we’ll think about turning your account back on.
