My charge of uncorrelated association would not have been levelled had the ad–which I really could not watch past about 3:15–contained only the FMFM clips and the Jeffersons’ song. That would be high–or at least middle–irony, contrasting the clear positive association of urban blacks moving up the ladder under economically conservative means with the clear negative association of the misbehavior of the primarily black defenders and profiteers of FMFM under politically liberal means.
The introduction of the King clips, however, serves no germane purpose at all. This shifts the ironic ridicule of individuals to a generalization, and at that point the tone becomes poisonous.
And I hoped at the time of my original post that wise heads would agree that poison will not win us the votes we need–which I am still hopeful can be had–at this point.

To me, the problem I have is with the Jefferson’s, who could pay their mortgage compared with people who could not. However, I would say that 99% of the borrowers were like Jefferson in that they were trying, and were not duped, into trying to grasp the brass ring.
I think a lot of assumptions have to be made to make the leap of identifying trolls, and so, I don’t play that game but do understand why the owners do.
And if they hired me to hunt and vanquish trolls, I would get the best at it.
One thing I do understand is my extreme hatred for political correctness and my love for free speech, and that my opinion might be tinged by the fact that I was banned on my first day here for a satirical joke attacking PC.

Hey, when your brain is this old it may take you a while too. But I’ve lived in the Bronx long enough to know what La Carniceria is, and then it started fitting together.
As for white guilt, one of the advantages of moving from a theologically and politicaly Liberal youth to a Calvinist* maturity is the great levelling that occurs when one has good reason to believe that not only is everyone potentially wicked, but actually so as well! It makes it so much easier to deal with all sorts of people, knowing they are, outside of the grace of God, just as bad as I am.

I still don’t believe the ad was racist, but rather that it can be interpreted at racist. The problem is that when race is involved it only takes one person to equate a majority opinion. Racism is so all encompassing that anyone can claim to see it even if it isn’t really there. At that point anyone who disagrees is seen as a racist even when their intentions were pure as the driven snow.
P.S. I grew up in Phoenix, AZ, I am well aware of the carniceria…in fact I would by my meats anywhere else.

I appreciate your willingness to engage on this, Aaron, but I at least need to wrap it up. If anyone (not saying you, but others above were less kind) wants to imply that I am steeped in PC or white guilt, they are welcome to sit in on the Heidelberg Catechism class I teach to a number of men, most of whom are familiar with the interior layout of Rikers Island, and ask them what they think.
Bottom line. Of course many see racism where it ain’t. But is the last 4 weeks of an election that would be helped by not causing those who are likely to over-attribute racism to doubt that the lies they have been fed are just that, really the best time to send a powerful and ambiguous signal which would cause more doubt? Ergo the inappropriate flag.
