A helpful reminder: the Weathermen were out to kill people.

Oh, don't worry. We can talk about this *and* Fannie/Freddie.

We can talk about everything, in fact. We will, too.

Anyway, here’s Powerline’s well-intentioned attempt to educate the modern American “reporter” by linking to the article below. Personally, I don’t see why they bothered – the folks in that field that most need to read it are also the ones most likely to respond to Mr. Murtagh in time-honored “LALALA”/fingers in ears fashion – but it doesn’t hurt to remind the rest of us that this particular bunch of fantasy ideologists were targeting real people, not conveniently animated cardboard cutouts.

Oh, and let’s save time: by putting up that Hoover Institution link, I am in fact explicitly comparing the Weathermen to groups like al-Qaeda. Because, you know, both groups were made up of terrorists. It’s not my fault that the Chicago activist set is apparently a bit more tolerant of that particular lifestyle than you or I would be.

John M. Murtagh

[Fire in the Night](http://www.city-journal.org/2008/eon0430jm.html)

The Weathermen tried to kill my family.

30 April 2008

During the April 16 debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, moderator George Stephanopoulos brought up “a gentleman named William Ayers,” who “was part of the Weather Underground in the 1970s. They bombed the Pentagon, the Capitol, and other buildings. He’s never apologized for that.” Stephanopoulos then asked Obama to explain his relationship with Ayers. Obama’s answer: “The notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was eight years old, somehow reflects on me and my values, doesn’t make much sense, George.” Obama was indeed only eight in early 1970. I was only nine then, the year Ayers’s Weathermen tried to murder me.

At the conclusion of his 2001 Times interview, Ayers said of his upbringing and subsequent radicalization: “I was a child of privilege and I woke up to a world on fire.”

Funny thing, Bill: one night, so did I.

In February 1970, my father, a New York State Supreme Court justice, was presiding over the trial of the so-called “Panther 21,” members of the Black Panther Party indicted in a plot to bomb New York landmarks and department stores. Early on the morning of February 21, as my family slept, three gasoline-filled firebombs exploded at our home on the northern tip of Manhattan, two at the front door and the third tucked neatly under the gas tank of the family car. (Today, of course, we’d call that a car bomb.) A neighbor heard the first two blasts and, with the remains of a snowman I had built a few days earlier, managed to douse the flames beneath the car. That was an act whose courage I fully appreciated only as an adult, an act that doubtless saved multiple lives that night.

[snip]

Though no one was ever caught or tried for the attempt on my family’s life, there was never any doubt who was behind it. Only a few weeks after the attack, the New York contingent of the Weathermen blew themselves up making more bombs in a Greenwich Village townhouse. The same cell had bombed my house, writes Ron Jacobs in The Way the Wind Blew: A History of the Weather Underground. And in late November that year, a letter to the Associated Press signed by Bernardine Dohrn, Ayers’s wife, promised more bombings.

After all the POTUS needs to be able to multitask

radar9597 (Diary) Tuesday, October 7th at 6:51AM EST (link)

Mr. Macain will demonstrate his ability to multitask….I hope Barry gets pounded with Fannie/Freddi and than Ayers/Rezko tonight….and for “effect” ask Mr. Obama to provide one example of leg. legislature that he has been involved with…..You are right MOE, this should be fun tonight.

Shows How Effective Media Bias Is

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Tuesday, October 7th at 6:57AM EST (link)

Even many Republicans dont get it. People think this is just some crazy college phase.

No, these are unapologetic bona fide terrorists. Imagine if McCain has been hanging out with the Klansmen that bombed that church in Birmingham all these years. Do you think that would be irrelevant in the press.

Who are the Keating 5?

SpL Tuesday, October 7th at 7:18AM EST (link)

All,

This topic will be all over the internet today, with nothing but John McCain’s name attached to it. I queried with “who are the keating 5?” Nothing came up other than sites linking McCain with it. This has been orchestrated to look grassroots. And of course since it will be “everywhere” voters who wait to decide based on scuttlebutt will be swayed.

Enough about Ayers today. They are blaming deregulation and McCain for the current crisis.

Here’s your chance to answer: who were the Keating 5? Why was John McCain “all but exonerated?” While you’re at it, you may want to make comments at all of those “grassroots” (ahem) blogs.

Keating 5 - as I posted

SpL Tuesday, October 7th at 7:25AM EST (link)

…on another thread. This will be all over the internet today. By the end of today, John McCain will have not only become the only member of the Keating 5, but will have sold his soul for deregulation and single-handedly caused the current financial crisis.

Perhaps the Ayers thing is damning but it’s a side topic today. Think Katrina/Bush and then get going with Keating 5 comments, etc about the other side of this story, all over the intenet. I queried “who are the keating 5″ and NOTHING came up except for McCain references.

People are angry and Dem’s are not afraid to cause a crisis and then blame Republicans for it. They are just not.

If they get away with it, then they get to have control of all those billions we just gave em to fix this crisis.

Yawn

Nobody cares about the Keating Five. Anyway, McCain was acquitted and McCain is a known quantity.

Most AMericans still don’t know who Obama is. They dont know the one who married a women who thinks America is a “mean country” that she has never been proud of, who listened and exposed his young duaghters to an Anti-American racist pastor, who has no qualms hanging out with terrorists, who is part of the corrupt Chicago Machine poltics.

Actually, I don't mind them talking about the K5.

Is figuring out WHO is causing all of this bad news, and who can they blame. Bush didn’t make Katrina happen. It was local officials who went into the hurricane totally unprepared. Then blamed Bush for it all.

If you have info on Keating 5, go post it. Most people don’t know what it is which makes the Dems want to “explain” it to them.

Imagine if Obama was married to someone who wanted their state to secede from the USA. I can’t think of anything less patriotic than that. I think this attack from McCain could really blow up on him.

Ayers was a past association that was loose as best. Clinton tried to nail him on it in the primaries and it went no where. McCain tried to get this to stick this summer and it went no where.

People want to talk about the economy. They want to hear what McCain has to offer. They are tired of the fear-mongering. Politico has a great piece on what McCain needs to do — its a handful of Republican strategists outlining how McCain can win (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14340.html). In that article, no one talks about attacks as a primary objective.

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Tuesday, October 7th at 8:17AM EST (link)

Hillary couldnt go to Ayers because she was a Saul Alinsky acolyte. In fact, she couldnt get any traction until Wright. Wright softened him up and he started to dip into the polls but by then it was too late.

Not going to work

MainelyFree Tuesday, October 7th at 8:17AM EST (link)

Keating 5 is old news and is way too complicated for it be an effective attack now. Obama is using it only as a counter so the Ayers attacks don’t dominate the news cycle.

I wouldn’t be surprised if McCain alluded to Ayers tonight without a direct mention, but I would be surprised if Obama tried to bring up the Keating 5.

…to get Mr. Murtagh to the debate tonight (with a front row seat).

I don’t care if the guy is a Republican or Democrat (supporting Obama or McCain [of course, if he is supporting Obama, he might not play along]). At some point in the debate, an opening is going to present itself to talk about Ayers, and McCain should point to Murtagh, briefly tell his story (plus, give out the link to the story), and hammer “the One” about his associations with Ayers.

“Everybody needs money! That’s why they call it money!”

Maybe then the Democrats would have a qualified candidate for whom they could vote with pride this year.

I have solid and rational reasons for voting for Obama, and I’m proud to say it.

FWIW – I don’t think I repeated any false story and I alluded to Todd Palin’s former membership to the Alaska Independence Party. There is nothing made up about that and I don’t believe it has received any media coverage.

I am sad

izoneguy (Diary) Tuesday, October 7th at 8:40AM EST (link)

that you would hand over your life, liberty and your pursuit of happiness to Obama.

Comrade Obama

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

It's received plenty of coverage.

Uma Richie (Diary) Tuesday, October 7th at 8:44AM EST (link)

And membership in the AIP does not equate with secessionist tendencies.

Given the corruption in Alaskan politics, do you blame someone without his wife’s will to fight, for joining a popular third party, whose platform says nothing about secession?

1). A direct quote from Todd Palin where he advocates the secession of Alaska from the United States;

2). A justification that convinces me that membership in the AIP and the Weathermen are morally equivalent (hint: the latter tried to kill people. And if your answer demonstrates that you don’t know the significance of the phrase “Fort Dix” it’s an instant fail).

or

3). An apology for comparing the husband of the current GOP Vice Presidential candidate with a notorious domestic terrorist and Obama associate.

1) comments section anywhere that is discussing it. Online magazines, blogs, newspapers, etc

2) anyone who has a blog that people frequent

3) email links to friends

4) however the videos explaining the subprime connection with “affordable housing” laws went viral

Those videos were brief and effective and LOTS of people shared them. This is the democratic response and many “informed” democrat voters will think they are well-versed in something their Republican friends don’t know about.

There is the chance democrats will have $700 billion new tax dollars ALL to themselves, if they own congress & the white house, to do with as they wish, along with lots of good property deals.

I’d rather have the Republicans right in there with them, holding them accountable. Refuting the story of the day will not hurt the cause. So all of you who have a good handle on the Keating 5, share your story. I tried to query for info and all I got were links to get more information on the K5-McCain connection.

No Apologies Here

MainelyFree Tuesday, October 7th at 9:21AM EST (link)

I won’t apologize because I do believe its a valid comparison. I do not believe Todd Palin is (or was) a secessionist, but its not a stretch to believe he has associated, at some level, with the founder of the AIP. Much in the same way that I don’t believe Obama is a terrorist, even though he has had a past association with one.

I would never condone what the Weathermen did and it was absolutely far worse than the AIP’s mission of trying to bring a secession vote in Alaska, but if you’re going to draw a judgement on character based on loose associations I think what I said is fair game.

Personally, I could care less about the Palin’s personal life or family history. It doesn’t drive my vote in the least.

You can delete this post, ban my account, whatever. I will continue to read the posts here, but I will refrain for posting in the future.

Achance (Diary) Tuesday, October 7th at 10:24AM EST (link)

and all that. First, any discussion with you about why most Alaskans have serious issues with our colonial masters who refused to turn over the lands to which we were entitled under the Statehood Act and who have decimated our economy in the name of environmentalism would be pearls before swine, so enough of that.

The AIP is a longtime fringe political party here and Vogler was a repeated candidate for office here. Both the Libertarians and the AIP have had a fairly strong following among non-Natives who live in The Bush and among oil-field workers, the latter largely because so many are tax protesters of some stripe. He fell mostly in the colorful character category but did rise to some prominence in the ’70s and early ’80s as Alaska battled with the US over land selection, Native Claims, and environmental restrictions on development. I’m reasonably confident that a poll of Alaskans in the late ’70s or early ’80s would have found a majority believing that Alaska would have been better off outside the federal Union, a view I don’t share but fully understand the issues that cause many to this day to feel that way. I suspect if you found anyone who used to be a logger or a miner here and who lost everything because of San Francisco eco-nazis, they would fill your ear.

Alaska’s election laws require that a party receive 3% of the votes in a general election to automatically appear on the primary and general election ballots, so fringe parties such as AIP and the Greens struggle mightily to get enough votes to stay on the ballot. Consequently, both are often the repository of protest votes from the right and left respectively.

In 1990, many Republicans bolted the Party’s nominee, registered AIP as a flag of convenience, and supported former Governor and US Secretary of the Interior Walter Hickel who ran for governor against a liberal Republican and an even more liberal Democrat. So, Hickel won under the AIP banner, so I guess a majority of Alaskans were “secessionists” from 90 to 94. The Palins have long been associated with Governor Hickel and he was one of her major backers in her run for Governor. After Governor Hickel chose not to seek re-election in ’94, the AIP returned to its fringe party status and since Vogler’s death, I’m not sure it is even on the ballot anymore.
