In a statement obtained by RedState, Sen. John McCain today will lay plain the crisis on Wall Street – not to mention Main Street – firmly on the narrow shoulders of those who caused it in the first place: the Democratic Party in general, and Senator Barack Obama in particular. He’s going to talk about it all. Here’s a taste:
Senator Obama has accused me of opposing regulation to avert this crisis. I guess he believes if a lie is big enough and repeated often enough it will be believed. But the truth is I was the one who called at the time for tighter restrictions on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that could have helped prevent this crisis from happening in the first place.
Senator Obama was silent on the regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and his Democratic allies in Congress opposed every effort to rein them in. As recently as September of last year he said that subprime loans had been, quote, “a good idea.” Well, Senator Obama, that “good idea” has now plunged this country into the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.
To hear him talk now, you’d think he’d always opposed the dangerous practices at these institutions. But there is absolutely nothing in his record to suggest he did. He was surely familiar with the people who were creating this problem. The executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have advised him, and he has taken their money for his campaign. He has received more money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac than any other senator in history, with the exception of the chairman of the committee overseeing them. Did he ever talk to the executives at Fannie and Freddie about these reckless loans? Did he ever discuss with them the stronger oversight I proposed? If Senator Obama is such a champion of financial regulation, why didn’t he support these regulations that could have prevented this crisis in the first place? He won’t tell you, but you deserve an answer.
To our lurkers: that’s John McCain calling your guy a gutless, two-faced coward who lets others do his fighting. Which, by the way, is perfectly correct.
And there’s more.
Just a bit more, and drink like it was the refreshing rain that it is, my friends:
My opponent has invited serious questioning by announcing a few weeks ago that he would quote — “take off the gloves.” Since then, whenever I have questioned his policies or his record, he has called me a liar.
Rather than answer his critics, Senator Obama will try to distract you from noticing that he never answers the serious and legitimate questions he has been asked. But let me reply in the plainest terms I know. I don’t need lessons about telling the truth to American people. And were I ever to need any improvement in that regard, I probably wouldn’t seek advice from a Chicago politician.
My opponent’s touchiness every time he is questioned about his record should make us only more concerned. For a guy who’s already authored two memoirs, he’s not exactly an open book. It’s as if somehow the usual rules don’t apply, and where other candidates have to explain themselves and their records, Senator Obama seems to think he is above all that. Whatever the question, whatever the issue, there’s always a back story with Senator Obama. All people want to know is: What has this man ever actually accomplished in government? What does he plan for America? In short: Who is the real Barack Obama? But ask such questions and all you get in response is another barrage of angry insults.
Looks like we’re going to have one whale of a debate tomorrow, assuming of course that we can get past the junior Senator from Illinois whining for twenty minutes about how mean we’re being to him. And racist! Mustn’t forget the racism; God knows that his supporters never do. So let’s rock and roll. It’ll be a thing.

When Obama says that he wants to cut taxes for the middle class, McCain should respond that Obama has never proposed any tax cuts for the middle class while in Congress, but has voted for tax increases numerous times. We shouldn’t believe the rhetoric, but we should believe the record.
Same thing with regulation of Fannie and Freddie. Biden said in the debate that Obama warned of the looming crisis last year. Well, what did he do about it? Nothing. Obama’s rhetoric doesn’t match his record.
Obama says he works in bipartisan fashion. Well, when has he ever opposed his party on any significant issue and worked with the GOP? Not once! Obama’s rhetoric doesn’t match his record.

choosewisely08 Monday, October 6th at 1:34PM EST (link)This is a perfect strategy. McCain let radio shows like Rush, Hannity, etc keep the stories alive for these past few months. Had he done this too soon…it would have faded much like the Rev. Wright story has. Going at this now is wise. it gives it a good shelf life in the mainstream until Election day. Had McCain listened to the pundits…the Rezko, Ayers, etc links would have died on the vine before it could have impact on the Election. Also, wise move on Michigan. I doubt they have really left. But by pubicizing the “exit”, it brings awareness to the Michigan voters that they need to get out & vote McCain.

Now that that has happened, and only now that that has happened, should he take off the gloves.
Forgive me, however, but I will also repeat that my preferred tack for McCain would have been to oppose the package and push for a more free market-based solution. But again, McCain was evidently of the opinion that the bailout package was the best thing we could reasonably get for the country. Therefore, he took a bipartisan tact that helped get the bill passed: compare his actions and rhetoric with those of Nancy Pelosi. I do not fault him for that even as I disagree with him.
But now that the bailout is passed, thank goodness he realizes that it’s time to fight!

Although those concerns are present, obviously McCain needs to do handle both messages. It should not be a choice of “going negative” or “staying positive.”
BOTH are necessary, and should be present in ads: negative at the beginning, a positive alternative at the end.
And I will repeat: Where are the ads where McCain speaks calmly and directly to the audience/camera???

Really I am just taking advantage of the this C^3 to remind everyone:
While we have to occasionally engage in or at least allow populist rhetoric in front of the masses, let us not forget, at least internally, that there is no REAL need to go on the defensive about lobbying in general. I see this theme expressed too often inside our own tent.

The McCain campaign should put together and post a video that shows the C-span clips of Greenspan’s warning, McCain on the Senate floor, and the dems opposition in the hearings – ignoring the warnings of the regulators. Add in clips of Obama saying that sub-prime mortgages were a good idea “in theory”. During the debate, McCain can say “don’t just take my word for it – check out the video”.

A Couple of Other Suggestions for McCain
Spartan4Life (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 3:06PM EST (link)Obama is “Risky”- We don’t want to compound the risks to our economy by taking a “flyer” on someone that has no real record of accomplishment, so little is known about, and has not given details of what he will do. Risk is a word people have a real emotional reaction to.
Make the Bush tax cuts permanent- McCain needs to defend his support for this(it is the right thing to do). He needs to quit letting Obama beat him around the head with Bush when Bush has been right about some things. Force Obama the Liar to explain how he is going to give a tax cut to 95% of the people when over 50% already don’t pay taxes. Are we going to just transfer wealth from one group to another? I don’t think Americans generally agree with that. McCain can say, “I want to make the tax cuts permanent because I am a tax cutter. And, guess what? I am going to cut spending, too. I am going to rein in Washington, so get ready! And no $50B global poverty funds under a McCain administration!”
Go get him, Major!

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
Does anyone think maybe....
MelZ (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 3:13PM EST (link)McCain really was trying to run a campaign based on issues/policies rather than attacking character hoping his character would be uncovered without his help? Then, he realized no matter how hard he tried he was going to have to attack character himself?
I know it probably seems a little “too little, too late” but maybe this is a really good thing. Instead of attacking character, integrity, and judgment months ago where it would have died off, he is attacking right before we all walk into the voting booths, where it is fresh in our minds?
I am proud of McCain, while I do wish he would have hit harder and sooner…the above statements have encouraged me to send in a little more money and have reminded me as to why he was the man I cast my first presidential vote for!

SeanF2000 Monday, October 6th at 3:17PM EST (link)there’s a lot of structural things out there that might mute this attack McCain is launching, the economy being the most obvious. IMHO, the Ayers and Rezko stuff, if there was some new angle, might get better play. But then again it might get drowned out by the economy.

The Democrats fought oversight of those programs.
And this whole mess began with Schumer’s letter leak about IndyMac.

McCain should step up to the plate because if Congress had listened, we would not be where we are today.
In love and war–all is fair. And this is, like it or not, a war of sorts, a war to hold onto our country.
Finally, I do not believe all these polls are accurate. Once I saw the Florida Quinnipiac breakdown Oct. 1, I realized the problem with polls (a greater than 11 pt. variance in a traditionally Republican area giving Obama a 4 pt. lead? Give me a break). And it worries me that Obama supporters are being set up by Mainstream Media to assume this will be a landslide for Obama when I do not believe it will.

redneck_hippie (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 4:13PM EST (link)“Obama is a skunk,” the timing needed to be perfect. Sarah’s poking around Obama’s eye-socket at rallies this weekend forced The One (picture cyclops) to dredge around for a comeback. That Keating is all they had is instructive.
Once I heard “Keating” I knew we had him in the rope-a-dope.
Any semi-conscious adult knows that McCain has Obama beat in integrity, trustworthiness, character, etc.
It was always absolutely necessary to tie the “no character” “no accomplishments” facts to a strong issue. There just hadn’t been one before the financial crisis. The war controversy had faded due to the success of the surge.
We on the right already know The One’s plans are worthless, and much worse, dangerous. The economically clueless wouldn’t get that no matter what the ticket did. Now that McCain/Palin are really out hammering on why The One is not to be trusted to fix the problems, people will notice that there was no there, there all along.

MrSandman (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 7:16PM EST (link)I’m not sure that is true Martin.
I’m not saying he needs to play the bipartisan. I’m saying JM needs to present a plan to address the issue.
Here’s a proposed speech that was written by Barry Ritholtz as an example. I think it would be a great start.
http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2008/10/plan-b.html#comments
My fellow countrymen:
These are indeed extraordinary times. The country is in an economic crisis, housing has been in free fall, we are clearly in a recession, and now credit freeze is worsening. We are living through what future historians will call The Great Financial Crisis of 2008.
Times such as these call for extraordinary leadership. Unfortunately, such leadership has been in precious short supply in Washington D.C. Our government has been reacting to events, rather than pro-acting. Its been all crisis management — putting out fires rather than preventing them. We have been on our heels, playing defense. That is not leadership; that is not considering possible events, and planning accordingly.
It is time for this leadership vacuum to be filled.
We have made some positive steps: A $700 billion-dollar bailout plan was passed by Congress last week, and while flawed, it is a first step. It is the biggest bailout bill in America’s history. But now is not the time to sit back and wait for results. We need to consider the next steps that must take place as a follow-on to this rescue plan, as well as contingency plan in case things do not go as we hope. Pray for the best, but be prepared for the worst.
We need a “Plan B.”
I propose the following: As of this morning, I have sent invitations to our nation’s brightest financial and economic thinkers. It doesn’t matter if they are in academia, or the private sector, or in government. It matters not to me if they are a Democrat or a Republican or Independent. Your country needs you, and I hope you will answer the call.
It is time for us to get on the offense.
What is needed now is for the intellectual capital in this country to be put to good use. We have many of the world’s finest universities, we have unparalleled genius amongst our populace. Rather than merely rely on a hastily crafted on-the-fly plan, improvised in response to the eruption of crisis, its time we used our brains. We need to be both optimistic, and at the same time, we must always have a contingency plan. A great nation such as ours deserves at least that much.
What we need is our generation’s economic equivalent of the Manhattan project. That’s what helped the United States and her allies develop the A-bomb and to win WWII.
For the past 8 years, we have ignored our greatest strengths. We have disdained reason and science. We have lived in an imaginary fairytale land, where home prices never went down, where inflation and unemployment were low, and economic growth was strong.
That turned out to be a phantom dream, based upon an illusion.
We now know that much of the growth of the past few years was based on these faulty premises: That we could borrow our way to a better lifestyle, that our financial institutions could speculate their way to profits, that we could deficit spend our way to prosperity. My friends, that is not how you achieve economic greatness. We need to strengthen the economic engine of the United States in every way we can. To do that, the president of the United States needs to take counsel from the wisest men and women in the land.
I invite my opponent to participate in this, to sit side by side with me, and receive counsel from these experts together with me. Whichever one of us win this election next month, he will need to hit the ground running. This crisis is bigger than the election, it’s more important than either one of us. It’s of great significance to the country, indeed, to the world. (Far greater importance than you would have guessed from the response from the present White House).
In the absence of leadership from the White House, it is incumbent upon the two men seeking that office to show the economic leadership that has been missing.
We are challenged to rise to this occasion. When presented with great challenges, America has always responded with greatness of our own — and this is one of those times. We are being tested, and we must succeed — not with just a barely passing grade, but with flying colors and honors appropriate for a great nation.
Given the extent of the financial crisis, and the extraordinary amount of resources that we must bring to bear upon this, in order to prevent this recession from spiraling into something far, far worse, we must leave no stone unturned, no idea unexplored, no action unconsidered.
As a nation, we have weathered terrible crises before: The Depression in 1929, World War 2, Recessions and economic disruption, the attacks of 9/11. The United States has been tested, many times in her past, and has always risen to the occasion every time. The Great Financial Crisis of 2008 is merely another one of those tests that allows the country to demonstrate what its people are capable of — what we are made of — what makes us Americans.
This will not be easy. Sacrifices will have to be made. For a period of time, we must put aside our our own self-interest and work together as one nation. There is no room for partisanship. There is no time like the present to embrace our future. And there is no country like the United States of America.
God bless you, and God bless America.

I think he can handle both
nivlem (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 8:21PM EST (link)We,as the American people, are completely
capable of handling both.
This character issue is as important
as the bailout/economic issue. It is
key to the direction we go, and what we
have left.
It is frightening to think Bill Ayers,
Jeremiah Wright, the Chicago political
machine and everyone else he has
thrown under the bus will be coming to
the White House on a regular basis. These
radicals must be stopped as much as the
economy must be fixed.
McCain would not be in this position if the media would do their job. It is a
tremendous battle, but it must be won.

Obama's Real Face
angels16 Monday, October 6th at 9:03PM EST (link)We here, who have been keeping up the past two years with Obama, know his true face. Unfortunately, the normal person does not know this information, which is vital to get out. We really won’t see Obama’s true evil self unless he is elected. If the McCain campaign does it’s job, then they will carry the white house. Obama’s true self needs to be seen by the American people, so they can see who they are really supporting. Most people do not know Obama’s sorted past. It’s time to let the real face of Obama be seen by those supporting him.
It is also very prudent to bring up the many donations that have been made from foreign Donors to the Obama campaign. It is no secret that the extremist muslims want their brother Obama to head the last superpower and to make sure money for the terrorists start pouring in from the United States. Obama will fund our own demise, or attempt to undermine the foundations that the United STates was built. He will do that by recognizing Gay Marriage, and by legitimizing and completely legalizing Abortion, which is against the bible. Everything that Obama is doing is against the bible. He is the devil in sheeps clothing. He preaches peace, but has hate and division at his core. Just look at the church he attended for 20 years. His preacher hated the United STates, Damned the United States, spoke against her leaders, and blamed the white people for all of it. He praised people like Malcom X, Louis Farakkahn, and praises the Black Panthers. Do we really want this guy for a President? He pals around with William Ayers, the founder of the Weather Underground, a radical group that was responsible for extensive bombings during the Vietnam era, and today he is allowed to practice politics…only in a truely free country can this happen. Let Obama get into office, and all that will disappear. The liberal radio stations and TV stations will disappear, and free speech itself will be threatened.
Obama’s bad decisions and lie’s have caught up with him, and now it’s time to face the music. His real estate dealing with Tony Rezko is well known, and could a deal like that ever be made for a normal person like you or me? Of course not, it’s illegal. Obama thinks he is above the law, and can get away with anything. His Association with Khalid Abdullah Tariq al-Mansour is now known, but many don’t know that he is the primary secretary to Prince Alwaleed of Saudia Arabia, where the 19 9/11 hijackers were from. Prince Alwaleed has given money to Khalid to give to Obama, and that is a direct connection. Now Obama owes money to Prince Alwaleed of Saudia Arabia, and what a great time now for the Prince of Saudia Arabia to ask for a return on his investment. Obama is obligated to repay this man, in any way he can. He will compromise this country to pay back the prince, and that we cannot allow. Why put Obama in such a high place that could ultimately bring us down, or allow the terrorists to survive. If Obama gets into office, I predict that at the end of 4 years, not only will Al queida be thriving, but Osama bin Laden will be friends with Barack Heussein Obama, not openly of course. Of course they won’t be friends openly, but Obama will still be out there, surviving and thriving, and encouraging others to destroy America. At least McCain will defeat the terrorists, or bring them to their knees.
Obama is a closed book to the people of the United States, and he must be exposed, so people can see him as we do. If they knew of him the way we do, no one would vote for him. He is as radical as his pastor Jerimiah Wright, and as militaristic as the black panthers and Louis Farrakahn. We cannot afford to let this happen, because America is already weak from this financial crisis that was perpetrated by the Democrats…
Oh yes, this Financial meltdown was perpetrated by the democrats, because they wanted the economy to be front and center, where they think their candidate can win, because of the lies that spew forth from his mouth. The devil has given him the gift of speech like king Midas, and everything he says, people fall over themselves to hear him, and they believe what he says. The democrats orchestrated this financial meltdown, because McCain was winning, and the only way they could win was to make something catastrophic happen. This financial meltdown was long in the making, and could have been avoided, but key congressional leaders of the democratic party made it know that the market was weak, and if they demanded their money, they would not be able to get their money out, and that is exactly what happened. If key members had not said a thing, then there would be no panic, no fear in the market. The market is always volitile, always a risk. If some insider lets out this kind of information, then the market will collapse…everyone who is anyone knows this, and those people should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, but they will get lost in the financial chaos of this meltdown. They will not be held accountable, just like all the other inquiries the government makes in situations like these. It is a farce, a travesty, a miscarriage of justice. These democrats will not be held accountable, and we, the taxpayers, will foot the bill while the rich grow richer. Is that the message that we want to send. Obama is very rich, and getting richer. McCain came from a military family, and had to work hard for his money. His wife is the real bread winner, and owns most of the houses that they have. It is not McCains fault that he married well, but Obama is all about greed, the lust for power, and he will do anything to acheive that goal. Obama is dangerous, has exercised bad judgement about everything, including the use of drugs in his late teenage to early adult years. Most of us face that decision, and we choose not to use drugs, but he had not the power to say no, and that same weakness exists in him today. The lure of easy money is too great for him to pass up, as it was from Prince Alwaleed, whom he now owes money. We as Americans should demand to see Obama’s donor’s, and where the bulk of his oversea’s donations have come from. McCain has listed all of his on his web site, but Obama refuses to let the American Public see where the donations from Oversea’s are coming from. Why? What is he afraid of? I will tell you. He is afraid that when the donations are looked at, they will be from Palestinians, Pakistani’s, and Syrians. Those who want the republicans out of power, those are where they are from, and the campaign’s are not allowed to accept donations from people who are not American Citizens. We have shown that Obama is a Liar, a cheat, uses bad judgement, and makes bad choices. Do you want that for our President.
McCain has value, he is a hero, he has earned the right to run for president, Obama has not. McCain has a lifetime of experience to apply to the Presidency, Obama does not. Do you want an unproven politician, who makes bad judgement and choices, to lead us into foreign policy at a time that is the most explosive in history? NO! We need a man who knows war, to avoid it, and how to avoid it. He will pull us out of Iraq, out of Afghanistan, and he will help us put Russia back in their place. The Russians lost the cold war, and now they want a second chance at glory. They must not be allowed to win. In a time when Oil and gas is the most expensive, you would think the United States would invest heavily in drilling along the coast, as well as in Alaska. We need to cash in on these prices, as people are understanding that we has seen the peak of oil production. Now that China has started using so much oil, the supply is now greater than the demand, so the price continues to go up. McCain will show us the way through to more drilling and to invest heavily in alternative fuels and technology’s. The sun puts out so much energy, we need to harnes that energy, as well as wind energy. We also need to take advantage of the tides, which can also turn turbines for power. Hydrogen power is the future…but we all know that eventually, all power will run out, even Nuclear power. Nuclear power is also the way forward, and will boost our electrical grid immensely, improving it. We also need to guard the nuclear silo’s from attack, which they have done a good job so far, but we still need to increase that guard presence.
We can see our way forward here in this election cycle, and it is with McCain, not Obama. Obama will lead to our downfall, McCain to our return to normality and status. Obama will rape our economy more that the democrats have already…this is worse than watergate, and the American public will never know the difference. It will be lost in the furvor of the financial collapse. It will not be known unless the republicans come back to power and expose it and hold those accountable. The American public demands it.
Excuse me, allright
Matthew Morris (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 9:07PM EST (link)What exactly are you referring to, here?
Saying we need to “regulate” Fannie and Freddie is another way of saying we need to reign in the GSEs that are Fannie and Freddie. They should be better than “regulated.” They should be disbanded.

Re: ACORN
d55may Monday, October 6th at 9:49PM EST (link)What Senator McCain also needs to do is connect more dots. Obama trained a group of radical activists called ACORN.
They would imtimate Bankers outside the buildings to force the banks to lower their mortgage standards. These loans (sub-prime)were then picked up by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, bundled into securities and sold to the market (Wall St).
These loans have spread thru out the world. The point is that Obama started the activists pushing for lower rates, later when he was in the congress he blocked the votes necessary to regulate Fannie And Freddie.
McCain has to speak louder and tell the people that it was NOT Bushes policies that caused the Wall St problem , but groups like ACORN and the Democratic Representives pushing the American Dream to people who could not afford it, defrauding poor minorities.

Crap like this
rramir16 Monday, October 6th at 9:53PM EST (link)Every time I try to find a right-wing blog to try to broaden my reading, i run into crap like this.
“To our lurkers: that’s John McCain calling your guy a gutless, two-faced coward who lets others do his fighting. Which, by the way, is perfectly correct.”
The thing I noticed wasnt your perspective on Obama, which is the kind of alternative view that I am looking for when I read talk from the other side, the key thing was your criticizing anyone who would think otherwise as a “lurker”.
This is part of the race-baiting, us-vs-them crap that always turns me away. As if anyone who disagrees with you is illicitly browsing the site.
Why shouldn’t an Obama supporter be reading this site? If thats what you want, go ahead and delete my account. Because clearly this, as with basically all the other “conservative” blogs I’ve read, are more interested in dogmatism than discussion.
So now referring to Dems at RS as "lurkers" is "race-baiting"?

As you mentioned, corruption would take a slap to the face,
Government influence in our life is greatly reduced,
Redistribution of wealth takes a slap to the face,
Supply side economic principles will be able to triumph.
I don’t know what the conservative argument against it is. I am somewhat surprised that the fair tax isn’t a GOP platform.
