+5.9 in the RCP polling average, and Obama wants to bring up the Keating Five.

:pause: *Huh?*

I’m sure that there’s a great strategy here. Or tactics. Hey, if Obama doesn’t feel the need to know the difference, why should I? (Via Hot Air Headlines)

Exclusive: Obama to hit McCain on Keating Five

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Monday will launch a multimedia campaign to draw attention to the involvement of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the “Keating Five” savings-and-loan scandal of 1989-91, which blemished McCain’s public image and set him on his course as a self-styled reformer.

Retaliating for what it calls McCain’s “guilt-by-association” tactics, the Obama campaign is e-mailing millions of supporters a link to a website, KeatingEconomics.com, which will have a 13-minute documentary on the scandal beginning at noon Eastern time on Monday. The overnight e-mails urge recipients to pass the link on to friends.

Yeah. The Politico is kind of wondering about this one themselves, given the above – and the fact that they made sure to include this bit:

“The story was complicated, but the press found a tag line that simplified it. McCain and four other senators with ties to Keating were dubbed ‘the Keating Five.’ The label stuck, imputing to all the same degree of guilt even though it soon became evident that at least two, McCain and former astronaut John Glenn of Ohio, were far less culpable, if they were culpable at all.”

Now, you can have yourself a good time discussing the Keating Five case – preferably, somewhere else; nothing personal, but if we wanted to read what your candidate wanted you to parrot we’d subscribe to his mailing list – but you have to wonder why. It’s clearly in reaction to Ayers, which is… interesting, isn’t it? It’s… well, if you’re me, you can call it “petulant:” but if you’re a bit less partisan I think that “incongruous” is acceptable. This doesn’t fit the persona.

It also doesn’t really fit the Democratic narrative of the campaign, either. You don’t play with fire like this when you’re six ahead in the polls. And this is playing with fire: K5 is old, it’s been long since analyzed to a fare-thee-well, we all know the counters to it, and bringing it up encourages escalation – and we have more things to escalate with, as the entire right half of the blogosphere will point out to you at the drop of a hat. All of which makes it kind of odd that we’re hearing this now. I could see it if the race was tied.

So, did a nerve actually get hit? Not so much Ayers himself, but what the question of his involvement with Obama implies – which is that somebody is demonstrating that she’s not particularly impressed by Barack Obama? Is somebody having a fit of pique?

But that’s just layman psychology. Question withdrawn.

I have wondered for a while when this would come up. But you have to wonder, didn’t the McCain campaign wonder if it would? And if they did, why didn’t we innoculate ourselves against this? We could have used this as a talking point to point out his growth, but it’s been hushed over until now.

I fear this may get ugly…

Well, one line, in particular: near the end of her twenty-minute speech, Sarah Palin told the audience that out on the hustings one comment from supporters has dominated, in frequency, all others: tell people about the real Barack Obama. She said this quietly, without drama. But: thunder, hoots, an ovation. It was the one real firework in her stump speech; yet from the cadence of the speech one could tell that it was not intended thus.

It will hurt Obama bad.

It’s a pandora’s box.

People will see the contrast between McCain/Keating and Obama/Rezco.

McCain helped Keating even to the last end of Keating’s life when all Keating’s Big Democrats beneficiaries ostracized him. Obama dissed Rezco so badly.

McCain’s participation was at the end of S&L fiasco, trying to save his constituents from imminent collapse. That’s where McCain came from. Obama’s friends made Fannie/Freddie as milking cow.

S&L collapse made 3 Democrats guilty of the crime. Obama’s Friends and Democrats Frank and the Dodd are all off-the-hook in the Fannie/Freddie scam.

What more to say?

It will turn out bad for McCain? It will how beautiful the character of McCain is…. compared to Obama’s dark character.

Correction: 3 Dems guilty of being "unethical".

BlueLandRed (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 12:01AM EST (link)

if their new website was sitting on the shelf just waiting for McCain to make the first move, or if they threw this together over the past couple of days.

And while I think it’s mostly a counter attack to the threatened Ayers offensive that McCain is promising, I really think it’s more a reaction to the “swiftboating” of John Kerry. Obama’s team is going to try and “confuse” the media, because now the media will report both stories and there will be a natural tendency for the media and the low educated voter to see them as equivalent and that they cancel each other out.

And it might work, at least partially. If nothing else McCain will have to explain why Ayers matters but Keating doesn’t, potentially muddying up his message.

When is Obama going to release his fund raising numbers? Surely the greatest fund raiser can tap into those streams of illegal and/or non-existent donors and scrap together enough to keep up.

This is what I think the Obama campaign is trying to accomplish.

My 88-year-old father has been back and forth, back and forth on McCain. The problem is, he thinks McCain is too old, and he is not impressed with Palin’s readiness.

But he’s not crazy about Obama. He is not enlightened as far as racial prejudice goes, and he has preferred Republicans since Reagan.

However one of his most painful memories is the period when he feared that he would lose deposits made with savings and load institutions during the “Keating Five” scandal. And of course, my father is currently watching the value of his stock market investments plummet and rise daily on Wall Street.

This is not a good time to associate McCain with those bad memories.

On the other hand, most current voters don’t have vivid memories of the savings and loan failure. They are not that old!

But on another hand, it’s a complicated thing to explain, and few voters seem to have the interest or attention span to absorb the complexities. They may be vulnerable to the sound bytes.

Another problem is that the Ayers connection has already been highlighted by the McCain campaign. It’s not going to get much attention unless there is new evidence. And ironically we have the same problem as the Democrats. Ayers was a long time ago!

I was startled a few days ago to hear that my father had no idea who Ayers was. When I explained, he didn’t care. He was all about the bottom line.

And on that 6-point lead

Wall Street will continue to sell off

unseennc Monday, October 6th at 12:45AM EST (link)

McCain must tie the dems in congress and Obama to this economic mess. Wall street will sell off from now until the election. With Obama and a liberal congress what possible motive is there for investors to invest? higher taxes? socialist government? etc.

While Ayers and Wright and Rezko are good targets, MCcain must tie Obama to the Wall Street sell off. He can do this with Schumer( indymac) and Reid (insurance giant), Frank (Fannie and Freddie) and Pelosi (save the earth, no drilling).
The economy is taost for the next year 18 months at least. It will not go away the MSM will not let it. McCain must attack Obama’s strength and make it a negative.

CK_MacLeod Monday, October 6th at 12:46AM EST (link)

…but it’s already pretty ugly. In fact, it’s oogly. And has been. For a while.

Whenever Ayers has come up, Obama has overreacted. Remember when that independent group up an Ayers ad, or tried to, and the O-Team lawyers besieged TV stations, getting the ad pulled pre-emptively, even while launching their own oddly self-destructive counter-ad?

Or remember when Ayers came up in the debate, and Obama felt compelled to lie about the relationship – just a guy in the neighborhood, a Professor of English?

Or the attempts conjured by the Obama-Wire lists to squelch Stanley Kurtz’s Chicago radio appearances?

Maybe it’s a scab over an un-healed wound, or the loose thread in a woven sweater. I don’t think you’re going to get anyone to believe, as one fellow is claiming, that Ayers is the ghost-writer of DREAMS FROM MY FATHER, but maybe there’s something there – maybe some Ayers-inspired CAC education project, the details of which middle America is just not ready to abide, maybe something worse…

Or maybe there’s something that has nothing to do with Ayers, something so obviously disqualifying he’d rather we were fighting over anything else.

Or maybe he and his people are just weirdly touchy… Or maybe they figure as long as there’s traffic both ways, the public isn’t going to sort it out, and just vote Democrat because it’s a Democrat year, as they poli sci types and historians have told us…

Numbers

Yil Monday, October 6th at 1:31AM EST (link)

Obama, throughout the entire primary, has been smart with very effective people around him. He outplayed and out maneuvered Hillary to win the primary, and he never got in financial trouble like she did. He spent the bulk of his early money on field offices and staffing and it’s paying off for him in projected turnout and new voter registration. He built up his reserves right after the primary so he could spend now. The one thing I am sure of at this point is he isn’t likely to make economic mistakes with regards to the election given his campaigns track record.

Since he’s already investing tons of money each month in salaries it’s telling that he is outspending McCain 3:1 on TV right now in states he’s competing in. I don’t think he’d be doing that if he didn’t have the money to keep that rate up for the next month or even increase it. It’s easy to raise/lower TV spending so that’s probably the key. If you were to see a shard decline in TV time and given that we aren’t seeing it he’s not.

Since tactically it makes no sense to let McCain use whatever his fundraising number is against him I expect to see him report as late as possible.

Banking

Yil Monday, October 6th at 2:24AM EST (link)

Timing. There’s no “risk” here. The McCain campaign has effectively signaled it’s Ayers time. That means two things. The first is papers are going to report what McCain is doing and depending on the article/spin it may hurt him. Since papers love to be “balanced” they need another story they can report on and Keating fits that bill nicely. I’d expect a lot of articles mentioning both so I think given McCain said what he’s doing Obama just made a smart move by choosing his campaign’s storyline instead of letting the media pick one.

The other reason is the townhall debate. Depending on the filter used for questions it isn’t unreasonable to assume an Ayers question might get tossed in. But if they do that then they’d also likely include a Keating question and in this particular case it’s harder to run from it. McCain was censured for this wasn’t he? Obviously it wasn’t a criminal conviction like some of the others involved, but it’s pretty hard to argue that it was political mudslinging when both D’s and R’s were censured back then. Say what you want about guilt by association, an actual censure vote probably trumps it.

One more thing about that risk… Censured for a BANKING scandal about de-regulation? It’s not a risk, it’s a gift to Obama! It’s really hard for McCain to argue that he wants to regulate the banking industry to prevent another meltdown like we were having when he was so obviously against it before. It doesn’t really matter if you think re-regulation was a cause or not, McCain has said as much in the first debate, most people think it, and the media says it’s the cause or at least a big part. Given that environment this is just plain terrible ground to have to defend.

I think Obama surrogates threatening to bring up Keating if McCain brought up Ayers in the past has kept the lid on both stories. With McCain going ahead, Obama retaliated as promised. Given the economic crisis that has unfolded since the lid was put on, it has only become FAR more politically dangerous for McCain to have invited retaliation. If anyone is taking a risk here, it’s McCain. Unless of course you think Obama was going to do this anyway in which case the arguments I just used can be flipped the other way.

If this is the game than McCain has better odds than if the media is spending hours blaming him and other Republicans for the financial crisis.

I would, if I were McCain, also make an issue of the democrats actions with Freddie and Fannie (this would include Obama). Even Bill Clinton will back him up on those ties

Many of the Obamatons are very young- younger than the scandal. That, combined with the lefty need to make everything equal, means they are hoping their base will simply conclude that their guy made a mistake, but so did McCain when he was younger.
The other is that the media is now a well trained lap dog. They are simply repeating Obama talking points without fact check. They are hoping to put McCain on the defense by his vicious attack on a school reformer, and force him to re-defend his Keating 5 experience, even though he was exonerated.
McCain needs to take the battle back to Obama completely- brush it off by pointing out the fact he was cleared by the special prosecutor and immediately turn it back on Obama for his career achievement of participating in the destruction of our mortgage system to his personal benefit, and his hiring of the ring leaders from FNMA and FMAC to his campaign.
And then toss in a question about just why he has refused to open up his campaign finance system even though he promised to run a clean campaign.

Obama Sued Citibank Under CRA to Force it to Make Bad Loans

Buycks-Roberson v. Citibank Fed. Sav. Bank

Plaintiffs filed their class action lawsuit on July 6, 1994, alleging that Citibank had engaged in redlining practices in the Chicago metropolitan area in violation of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), 15 U.S.C. 1691; the Fair Housing Act, 42 U.S.C. 3601-3619; the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution; and 42 U.S.C. 1981, 1982. Plaintiffs alleged that the Defendant-bank rejected loan applications of minority applicants while approving loan applications filed by white applicants with similar financial characteristics and credit histories. Plaintiffs sought injunctive relief, actual damages, and punitive damages.

U.S. District Court Judge Ruben Castillo certified the Plaintiffs’ suit as a class action on June 30, 1995. Buycks-Roberson v. Citibank Fed. Sav. Bank, 162 F.R.D. 322 (N.D. Ill. 1995). Also on June 30, Judge Castillo granted Plaintiffs’ motion to compel discovery of a sample of Defendant-bank’s loan application files. Buycks-Roberson v. Citibank Fed. Sav. Bank, 162 F.R.D. 338 (N.D. Ill. 1995).

The parties voluntarily dismissed the case on May 12, 1998, pursuant to a settlement agreement.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Polls

dmort Monday, October 6th at 8:53AM EST (link)

I think these MSM polls are heavily weighted in favor of Obama, just as they were for Kerry in 04.If Obama is up by 10 more the weekend before the election then it will be time to worry.

Layman's psychology

deltar (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 9:18AM EST (link)

The inability of Redstate conservatives to correctly analyze the immediate political situation continues. And using layman’s psychology here continues the inaccurate analysis.

If you are winning with a month to go in the race you cannot afford to let the opponent use attacks to peel off any voters. So you immediately counter. Certainly Obama had this Keating 5 stuff ready for months, but was holding it for the right moment.

And your layman analysis says that the Akers connection for Obama is more damning than McCain’s old Keating 5 news. Sure this is the case for the committed folks on the Right, but that’s not who the campaigns are after. If you really think about it — the public is thinking about the economy NOW, so McCain’s connections to Keating are much more important to the deciding voters than Obama’s connections to Akers.

If you hit people with the right stuff at the right time the impact is much bigger. The Akers stuff is great red meat for the folks at Palin’s rallies, but middle-of-the-road voters just won’t much care right now. On the other hand, the Keating 5 attacks are aimed at the undecided voter, and what is that voter thinking of right now? Fiscal irresponsibility. In that way the timing for the Keating 5 attack is perfect.

moprwalt (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 7:01PM EST (link)

just listed on the internet news was a bit about former obama friend and nieghbor and fundraiser tony rezco.federal prosecuters have asked for a delay in sentencing to give them more sentencing posture. this is usually done when the individual charged is talking. rezco is the former fundraiser for Sen Barrack Obama and a former gov of Illinois. What is he talking about i wonder. to be a fly on wall must be great! and all the Obama campaign is talking about is the Keating five?is this the big story?maybe the news media thats not in the tank for obama have found something.walt

the Obama shadow is casting past Nov

moprwalt (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 8:00PM EST (link)

The trail of corruption in obamas past is building day by day, but with the press in the tank it may not matter if it doesn’t get air time. but it may spell trouble for an Obama administration in the end. once elected he will have a small grace period and then all the pidgeons come home to roost. when the public get a taste of obamanomics and his healthcare plan is exposed for the fairytale it is adding a possible major recession a President Mccain will look very good. but it will be to late and we will look like a third world govt when all his appointees are in the open. maybe a foriegn affairs post for william ayers and a presidential pardon for tony rezco so he dosen’t talk.then you can always give his old buds at fannie mae or freddie mack the secretary of treasury job. Rev wright will handle all his christian affairs at home, and louis farekan will be his mideast Islamic envoy. and then all his pals at ACORN get appointed to the comission of oversight of presidential elections because after all they know a fraud when they see one. last but not least secretary of defense will go to Sen Barney Frank if he could’nt see the fannie mae and freedie mac scandal being chairman of oversight for the two Govt agencies from within he’d be perfect at not seeing any threat from outside the US.Don’t laugh it is very plausable considering he picked say it ain’t so Joe Biden for V/P or could you say minnie me.Walt

This is why Biden is VP pick

izoneguy (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 8:09PM EST (link)

WASHINGTON, February 13, 2008 — Accuracy in Media editor Cliff Kincaid disclosed today that a hugely expensive bill called the “Global Poverty Act,” sponsored by Democratic Senator Barack Obama, was quickly passed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday and could result in the imposition of a global tax on the United States. Kincaid said that the major media’s cover-up of the bill, which makes levels of U.S. foreign aid spending subservient to the dictates of the United Nations, demonstrates the media’s desire to see Senator Obama elected to the presidency.

In a column posted on the AIM web site, Kincaid noted that Senator Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was trying to rush Obama’s “Global Poverty Act” (S. 2433) through his committee without hearings. The legislation would commit the U.S. to spending 0.7 percent of gross national product on foreign aid, which amounts to a phenomenal 13-year total of $845 billion over and above what the U.S. already spends. It was scheduled for a Thursday vote but was moved up a day, to Wednesday, and rushed through by voice vote. Kincaid learned, however, that conservative Senators have now put a “hold” on the legislation, in order to prevent it from being rushed to the floor for a full Senate vote.

The House version (H.R. 1302) was suddenly brought up on the House floor last September 25 and was passed by voice vote. House Republicans were caught off-guard, unaware that the pro-U.N. measure committed the U.S. to spending hundreds of billions of dollars. Kincaid’s column notes that the official in charge of making nations comply with the U.N. Millennium Goals, which are prominently highlighted in the Obama bill, says a global tax will be necessary to force American taxpayers to provide the money.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

old news on obamas chronies

moprwalt (Diary) Tuesday, October 7th at 12:30AM EST (link)

if this is just old news, can you ponder to ask yourself was it covered objectively by the mainstream media. NBC,MSNBC,CNN, ABC, have been very weak when it came to investigative reporting concerning OBAMA period. he is thier candidate and they have already inaugerated him with his own specially designed presidential shield. the thing about old news thats great ,it suddenly becomes relivant when someone gives it validity. Tony Resko is talking to the feds and if you think OBAMAS name is not coming up very often, resko was OBAMAS fundraiser/campaignmanager in his two senate races, you are in denial. they’re connecting the dots and even though the Obama campaign returned the money from reszko to chairity he did accept it in the first place. next he worked as a lawyer for the get out to vote group acorn which is surrounded by voter fraud alegations and convictions, he sued Citibank to get them to issue more subprime loans. money was almost added into the finacial rescue package to go to ACORN,but was shot down. all these issues including FANNIE MAE, FANNIE MAC and former CEO”s Recieving massive severence packages tied to OBAMAS campaign need answers considering if it were anyone else they would already be holding hearings on his involvement. look beyond politics and take the state of the nation do we need a major scandal to go along with a major recession which by the way is now global. calling barney frank where are you? resign do youself a favor and the nation.Walt

18 billion is a lot in Iraq, too.

blooch Sunday, October 12th at 12:42AM EST (link)

Barack says 18 billion in earmarks is chump change, but he says we desperately need that 75 billion the Iraqi government has squirreled away. Surplus will not be tolerated anywhere, especially in Iraq. The O already has that pittance earmarked for Chicagoland.
