[Another UPDATE]: Thank you for reminding me, Swamp_Yankee. YOU MAY NOW START REMINDING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ABOUT HOW THE DEMOCRATS GOT US INTO THIS MESS IN THE FIRST PLACE, SENATOR MCCAIN.
[UPDATE]: The final score was 263-171, and I have no idea who bailed. 172-63 Democrats, 91-108 Republicans. Took you people long enough.
I’ll add stuff as it appears, but it looks like it passed, and with sufficient margin to make last-minute changes unlikely.
I suggest that those of you who are planning to scream about this do so in the privacy of your own homes: because yes, this is a bailout; yes, this kind of sucks for people looking for smaller government; and yes, we should never have let things get this bad in the first place. But it’s now the post-bailout era, and that is the way that things are.
So, if it’s all the same to you, I’d like to get back to the election now.

Two straight weeks of ideological carping has put the Republican Party on the brink is wholesale insignificance. Two weeks of increasingly bad poll numbers. This debate is largely beyond the scope of the average undecided American voter. Furthermore, anything that highlights Bush, the economy and pessimism is an automatic boon for Obama and the Democrats.
We need to focus on optimism and the future. Sarah Palin has broken the news cycle; Let’s ride her breakout victory to a strong week. Just win baby. Sarah Palin is our ticket out of this horrible news cycle.

Steph C (Diary) Friday, October 3rd at 12:45PM EST (link)I said what I had to say about it. Also, although it passed by a fairly wide margin, the Republicans still made sure the Democrats own the bill. For myself, I believe that was important.
That being said, if I were the House and Senate Republicans I’d start naming names, pressuring for the names of those who benefitted most from Fannie and Freddie. I would not let this stand as the last word.
Something needed to be done considering government’s role in causing it but I would not let it rest with the passage of this bill.
Any Reps who voted for this thing can recoup their status by going after the Washington corruption that allowed it to happen.

The Treasury Secretary, the President, and the public debate generally
JSobieski (Diary) Friday, October 3rd at 2:05PM EST (link)framed the entire issue as being two options:
(1) Paulson Plan
(2) Doom
Neither Paulson nor Bush to this day have addressed why the insurance framework was not viable. There will several other packages out there, but NOT A SINGLE WORD WAS SAID ABOUT THEM BY PAULSON.
Never addressed. Just shut up, do as your are told, and be a loyal foot soldier for limited government? People like Fred Barnes calling people idiots?
I was initially sympathetic to the bailout until government officials refused to answer questions or otherwise provide feedback on alternatives.
As bad as Obama is going to be, he is not going to be able to increase government spending by $700B. There simply isn’t an ability to do so.
So yes, lets get on with the important electino so that we can elect a President who will, if he is lucky, trim $10B in earmarks in his first budget.
Absolutely critical.
Conservatism can only prevail when leaders take the time to explain it, defend it, and promote it.

JSobieski (Diary) Friday, October 3rd at 2:20PM EST (link)the most significant backward step by the country in my adult life.
A Republican President and his Treasury Secretary pushed through $700B in spending without commenting on why other less intrusive and expensive ideas were inadequate.
All I wanted was to hear the reasons.
All I wanted was have some public education.
What I got was shut up and do what you are told—don’t you like having banks.
Now, I am told that is time to focus on this all important election.
I am falling back into the mindset that this election doesn’t actually mean that much. How much more spending would Obama be able to authorize given the current deficit?
Am I suposed to get fired up about a Republican nominee who doesn’t really get capitalism, is less likely to defend capitalism by educating the public than the current President, and whose vision on economic policy focuses on eliminating about $20B in annual earmarks?
The earmark issue is now officially a drop in the bucket.
So, I am not exactly fired up. I haven’t felt this much apathy since Fred dropped out.

I'm sorry but when we voted for Bush in 2004 ...
ZootSuit (Diary) Friday, October 3rd at 3:02PM EST (link)… we voted for a socialist takeover of the government. It just might not have been as quick as if we voted for the other major alternative (Kerry) but there was nothing Bush did in his first term to assure economic conservatives that he was one of them except to cut taxes. And quite frankly, I think he really didn’t understand why he should cut taxes beyond the political benefit he thought (and did) gain from it; in much the same way that I still think he does not understand why Harriett Miers was a very poor choice for the Supreme Court.
And yes, I do say “we” because I voted for him, too. But let’s face it, Bush was never really a conservative; only “less liberal” than the alternatives. Remember, it was the Bush White House that came up with this bailout plan.

My (combined) wish list.
Obama repeatedly contradicts what he said a few months ago, and you think the Democrats will "own" the bailout?
JSobieski (Diary) Friday, October 3rd at 3:23PM EST (link)No offense, but you are living in fantasy land.
The dems merely added their agenda items to the core Bush proposal.
The second most conservative President since Watergate owns the bailout, and so do we.
My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.
STOP THE MADNESS!
A reduction in the rate of spending increases is NOT a cut!
In-state tuition for illegals is NOT amnesty!
Requiring someone to pay their medical bills is NOT an individual mandate!
Reducing tax rates is NOT a tax increase!

Nick Haynes (Diary) Friday, October 3rd at 3:30PM EST (link)We’re saying to put it on hold for 32 or 33 more days. Come November 5th, rant and rave all you want-as a matter of fact, I’ll be joining you, win or lose.
But we have an election to win. Do you think the Dems would be nearly bailing on Obama if there was a vote on military items and he voted specifically for waterboarding? No. They would hate and despise it, but they would suck it up for 5 more weeks, and then begin to tear into him.
It’s not about putting principle aside. Ask yourself, which is better: Obama or McCain? Then ask yourself, does it really help my preferred candidate if I’m griping about him and his actions, or the actions of my party? With 10 months out, it’s helpful. At 5 months out, it’s tolerable. At 1 month out, it’s hurtful.
That’s all I’m sayin.

Seth Friday, October 3rd at 3:38PM EST (link)For those stuck on this issue, go dig up the Michael Medved broadcast from yesterday (oct 2). He made a really good point about how long it took (scores of years) for capitalistic free market ideas to bounce back after everyone lost confidence in the free market that ran the country into the great depression. Bailing it out before it got that bad, probably saves the free market system we enjoy today, not to mention many, many civil liberties in the long run. Even if it wasn’t the best deal it could have been, we likely dodged another New Deal which would have been far worse bullet for all of us.

Alberta (Diary) Friday, October 3rd at 4:12PM EST (link)I mean, if you check the credit swaps you will see that there was no change.
But you knew that.
Anyways, if that wasnt enough, there is already chatter on the Street that they want another x sum of hundreds of billions because 700 wasnt enough. You guys got had, period.
The markets have now been given about 1 trillion dollars in the last year (including todays con) and it has done nothing to soothe the fears of investors. This is the reality. May I suggest, in my humble way, that responsible, smart people run good companies, and good companies dont make stupid moves. So why would a good company invest money, expand, ect. when you just made 700 billion available to the people who cannot make good market moves. The bailout was a lifeline to mismanaged companies. You have kept poison in the system.
Now why would I invest in a market when I know there is poison in it? Because you have now given 700 billion to the big banks to hoard to protect their themselves? Or worse, to lend to the bad business who were so screwed they would need a government money handout to survive? That doesnt help my fear at all. In fact, all that does is discourage investment. This bailout is ill thought out at best. Plus we added what, 100 billion in pork on top? Absurd.
The choice was between responsibilty and dreams. This bailout represents dreams. Antibailouters wanted the poison out of the system as quickly as possible. The dreamers who are pro bailout seem to think you can crash a car, total it, but if we put a paintjob on it itll be fine.

Nick Haynes (Diary) Friday, October 3rd at 6:30PM EST (link)Trust me-I did everything I could. And when I say did everything I could, I’m talking about being a student and full-time worker while volunteering and organizing veterans (I am one myself), students, and faith communities to volunteer and vote for Romney. I tried.
Originally, I said to hades with McCain. Then I realized that Obama as president wasn’t something I could live with, so I supported McCain tepidly. His pick of Palin energized me, though.
Many of us you see here who are telling people to haul in the complaints for the next 5 weeks are not McCain people. A lot of us put more than words up for another candidate. But that’s the past-we have an election in 5 weeks, and we have someone we can tolerate versus someone we cannot. Let’s count the ways:
-We have a guy who is pretty good on spending versus someone who wants to grow the budget by the trillions.
-We have a guy who wants to leave Iraq in victory versus someone who wants to pull out, no matter the repercussions.
-We have a guy who will always work to protect life versus someone who, even by the most liberal definitions of mother’s body, has voted in favor of allowing abortions that happen once the child is no longer within the mother’s body.
There’s more I could expand on, but even with those three, the choice is clear, and we should do everything we can to stress that going into election day.
On November 5th, we vent. Until then, it’s time to throw all in and do what we can to get “Not Obama” elected president.

I was actually thinking “wow, I might not mind one of these two guys winning after all!”
Since then, my pleasure at her has cooled somewhat… but I do think that she’s the closest thing to a real person among those four candidates.
To answer your real question, nah. I’m not happy, per se. But neither am I made unhappy by her. I’m still going to vote Boston Tea Party but, if McCain wins, I won’t feel like, say, the House just passed a $700,000,000,000 bailout package, if you know what I mean.

Look on the bright side
Whitfox (Diary) Friday, October 3rd at 8:18PM EST (link)By lobbying for and accepting this bailout, Wall Street admitted it needs serious reform. It can’t claim the virtues of laissez-faire without becoming more of a laughing stock than it already is. We’ll have the chance to make some long overdue corrections to the New Deal.
House Democrats overwhelmingly voted for the bailout. House Republicans as a whole still voted against. It’s not as good as defeating the bill, but Republicans still look like the safer party to live with. Having fiscal cons take the more populist position didn’t hurt our image either.
Lack of a bailout isn’t going to stimulate a major panic a month before the election. That was a real risk, and if Republicans had shut down the bailout beforehand, Democrats would have overwhelmingly won. Not fair, but a fact of life. Count this potential bullet dodged.
As for the welfare of the country, God is well able to take care of his own. We’ve done what we can on this matter; time to leave it to him.

conservativecash (Diary) Friday, October 3rd at 8:55PM EST (link)“I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”-Reagan. Here’s the truth which I’m sure most of you already know. The democrats engaged in social engineering and wanted low-income minorities to be able to purchase housing. Their scheme worked as long as Greenspan kept rates low, and once they crept up ARMs reset and those marginal homeowners were unable to pay their mortgage payments and the rest in history.
Here is how to fix the problem: Remove the Fair Accounting Standards and allow banks and others who hold these assets to price them on their balance sheets according to their intrinsic value. Second, allow private equity to buy troubled banks without being labeled as a bank. Ironically, those private equity shops who are less regulated than the traditional and Ibanks have been able to generate robust profits as they are able to creatively generated profits.
Third, for the general economy, supply-side economics could lead the charge. Cut the corporate tax to competitive levels and make the Bush tax-cuts permanent. These incentives will help the economy regain its footing over the long-haul.

We all know that reasonable people cannot disagree about whether it was a good use of soldiers/treasury money to invade Iraq. Most of the UN thought that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction (indeed, maybe they were moved over the border to Syria! We’ll never know!) and that Saddam was, at the very least, an awful dictator without whom the world would be a better place. Anyone who thinks that we shouldn’t have invaded Iraq is either cheating with the use of 100% hindsight or an Ideologue.
However, when it comes to whether the Federal Government ought to purchase shares of Pets.Com that were purchased at more than $10/share, reasonable people can disagree about whether the people who made such a questionable investment should really pay the full price of their indiscretion and whether the Federal Government shouldn’t buy up the $11 shares of pets.com… lest the stock market fold in response. Some people think yes, some people think no.
Reasonable people can disagree whether the Federal Government should have gotten involved.

This law, esp since it is watered down, will be seen as inconsequential, very soon.
And ‘ski, I have written FOUR MAJOR COMPLICATED ECON COLUMN SON THIS OVER THE PAST 13 DAYS AFTER READING EVERY VERSION OF EVERY BILL AND EVERY WORD WRITTEN BY OTHER ECONOMISTS.
I AM A PHI BETA KAPPA SUMMA CUM LAUDE ECON MAJOR.

Brother, there is a tide in the affairs of men (see Billy of the Globe theatre), and the deep acts of men the past 5 years allowed and encouraged by dem fannie policies can not be cured by any law on paper.
