At first, I was angry that they had hacked Sarah Palin’s email account.

Just one more outrage from the Online Left. A stupid, stupid outrage.

The details are here, here, here and here: they did it yesterday, apparently. And this angered me, until one of my fellow Contributors reminded me of a little, small, surely insignificant detail that apparently everyone involved with hacking the account, publishing the hack, and favorably publicizing the hack seem to have forgotten. Sarah Palin is now under the protection of the United States Secret Service, which means that they are going to very interested in this attack.

Let me put this succinctly: everybody who had a hand in this is [expletive deleted]ed.

Have a nice day!

Moe Lane

PS: Actually, no, if the original is a fake you’re still all [expletive deleted]ed. Unless you’re as clean as the Alaska snow, that is. (Hey! It’s not! Remember, ignorance of the law is not a valid defense. Especially when it comes to the USSS.)

PPS: Before you scrub, remember the Arthur Andersen Lesson: erasing your involvement in a felony is itself a crime. I recommend that you save yourself some time better spent arranging for legal counsel and call the USSS now to turn yourself in. You can get your local number here.

PPPS: The lawyers among us are even now arguing which federal statute you’re all going to be brought up on. There’s a lot of giggling involved.

For a hack job, it was done rather poorly.

As someone on 4Chan said:

“Anonymous 09/17/08(Wed)00:48:41 No.1550558

look, there are three possibilities for what happened.

1) The guy who got in was a complete tool, got the password, took a couple useless screenshots, then posted the password so everyone tried it and the account locked, ending all hope of anon winning the election.

2) The guy was not a complete tool. He got the password, took screenshots of everything he could, and generally copied all possible information. Then, for some reason, he decides to put up the password and a couple of useless screenshots, just to taunt the tubes.

3) This is the best troll ever.”

A friend of mine who is on 4Chan IMed me this afternoon about this. And his opinion is very similar — that whoever did this was an idiot, as they only seemed to take trophies as if to say “Look what I did” instead of actually trying to find out anything interesting.

They deserve to be caught.

I am a 911 dispatcher, and police officers need to run names through the National Crime Info Computer quite often.
Once, a police officer gave me a name, and instead of running “Clinton Prince” like he asked me, I ran “Roger Clinton.”
D’oh.

Within 30 seconds, the phone rang. It was the USSS. They interrogated me as to why I had run the brother of the president.
They were not in the mood to play, and only after about 5 minutes of my explaining and apologizing did they accept my explanation.
I was terrified.

Be afraid, “anonymous.”

Brian Hale, an FBI spokesman in Washington, also confirms the FBI has been contacted about the incident. Two federal law enforcement sources say the FBI and Secret Service would have concurrent jurisdiction normally on a matter such as this, but it remains to be seen if the Secret Service will take the lead on the investigation because Palin is a protectee.

Vegas_Rick (Diary) Wednesday, September 17th at 6:27PM EST (link)

I read the AP release on the hacking. There was absolutely no condemnation of the hack job, but there was this:

The Secret Service contacted The Associated Press on Wednesday and asked for copies of the leaked e-mails, which circulated widely on the Internet. The AP did not comply.

The disclosure Wednesday raises new questions about the propriety of the Palin administration’s use of nongovernment e-mail accounts to conduct state business. The practice was revealed months ago — prior to Palin’s selection as a vice presidential candidate — after political critics obtained internal e-mails documenting the practice by some aides.

The veneer of impartiality is wearing very thin.

Abuse of Power

Davo (Diary) Wednesday, September 17th at 6:37PM EST (link)

For years the press has been playing the role of gadfly to conservatives while ignoring or even covering up the missteps of liberal administrations. Recently they have been taking a much more agressive role in manipulationing public opinion. After the attack on 9/11 their efforts have resulted in compromising national security secrets; bin Laden’s cell phone and tracking financial records are just two. And now they are actively participating in an attack on a Vice-Presidential candidate. This is a direct threat to the substance of a free press. They are moving into the realm of a fifth column during what could be considered the most dangerous threat to the existence United States since it was founded.
If McCain/Palin are elected I pray that their administration pursues these traitors more vigorously than did Bush.

The only way I’d buy this was a regular run of the mill exploit given that it’s Yahoo’s servers which I’m sure Yahoo spends a lot of time keeping up to date is if it was a lucky brute attack on the password. Which would probably indicate a weak password on Palin’s part.

I’d wager however it’s more likely this was a social engineering job. Someone working with Yahoo support to convince them to in some way give up the password or reset it.

1) The evidence will lead where it leads and it will be up to the USSS, the FBI, and any other agencies with apropriate juridiction in this matter to follow the evidence and take action as indicated by same said evidence. Don’t you think the evidence discovered by the agencies I mentioned above will speak for itself? How would the McCain Campaign benefit from impugning the Obama Campaign with this?

2) The information contained in those emails, posted on the internet or not, is still private, priveleged information. While it is not a felony to read them, it is a felony to post them on the internet. Would you willingly abet the the hackers in the commission of their crime by helping disseminate the stolen information in a public forum?

Just curious.

No media will even cover this story sadly

As someone who has been trying to help some colleagues in Georgia protect a web site from Russian ddos attacks, I have to say, the remarks here display a remarkable lack of understanding.
Russian hackers are everywhere. We had 4000 hits per second ddos attack on the pro-Georgia web site that closed down hosting companies in Georgia, Lithuania, western Europe and eventually the US.

The Russians are all over this stuff, and way ahead of the US in the use of cyber warfare. Although many kids have declared yahoo email accounts “easy” to hack, they are, in fact, not at all easy. Yahoo, like google has teams of top notch security and info warfare people working on security issues. I have a little insight into google and yahoo’s operation because I have a PhD employee who has worked at both companies.

They know, like credit card companies know, that their trustworthiness is everything. To allow an easy hack would destroy them. Hacking them takes professionals.

Look to the Russians, who really don’t want McCain, good friend of Georgia, to be elected. The Palin yahoo email account was low hanging fruit.

Much more to come, I’n sure

What will happen now

Palin_Dealundecided_undecided Wednesday, September 17th at 9:39PM EST (link)

If you read my previous posts, you know I’m not thrilled with McCain. I would have voted for him if he had showed some concern for the well being of our country with his VP pick. But when he picked Palin, he lost me. I will not vote for anyone who is willing to put Sarah Palin in the Whitehouse.

McCain’s “strong defense” arguments all fall away when we see what he is willing to do to our country. I’m all about keeping our country strong, and Sarah Palin is the utter antithesis of this. I’m disgusted.

But what will happen next with the emails is easy to predict. Whatever is detrimental to McCain will be released – slowly so it stays in the news. And the drip-drip-drip will prove to be fatal to the McCain campaign.

Why, oh why, didn’t McCain pick Romney as VP? It was such an obvious choice to round out the ticket. McCain claiming he knows little about the economy is coming back to bight him hard.

For quite some time I’ve been a member of a volunteer organization which is decidedly liberal in its tilt, and which tolerated the 4chan at some of their events for a while. One year they managed to assault a staffer and they’ve been banned ever since. To me ‘bigotry’ at least involves some level of rationalization of hatred, 4chan doesn’t even bother with that. They are pretty much a pure hatred group seeking to shock, demean, and demoralize wherever they go.

To blame this on liberals or Obama is just silly. If anything, its a Rovian tactic to mislead the left. If not that, its Russian.

Anyhow, some of the lefty talking heads are saying that Palin uses private email accounts to conduct official business which can’t be subpoenaed. They have no proof, it is just something I heard several of them say tonight on different cable news channels. So they are trying to turn this whole thing around and make Palin look bad. I think here4money gave us an insight into what the left is trying to do. I’m starting to think that this is far more than just the anonymous idiots having fun. Maybe there is something really going on here, not just a stupid hacker prank. The talking points are already out there. Accuse Palin of wrong doing without evidence. Taking a page from the WH book, she tried to avoid the State of Alaska’s email system by maintaining a private account and communicating with her staff, Todd, and others through that account.

If anybody working for her had known their a__ from their elbow, they’d have told her in no uncertain terms that anything she put in an email on the State or any other system would wind up on the front page of the Anchorage Daily News. Who cares what she uses her Blackberry for. And who cares that she emails her friends from a private account. It appears to me her administration has a pretty good idea where their a%$ and elbow are, since they have an 80% approval rating. Even if she sent top secret polar bear intelligence thru a private account. It does’nt make this violation of law right. There are many ways to get at those emails without breaking the law. If I am wrong on Alaskan elected official email law then I am sorry, but I just dont see what the problem is.

What is the big deal? I think that in reality it would be difficult to find any elected official that doesn’t on occasion do official business on private email accounts, and also send personal emails on public (governmental) email accounts. What about using a public phone to conduct business? Other than a call record at the phone company, how can anyone say what was discussed. All I have heard is accusations, no proof. There appears to be a bunch of people out there that Palin pissed off, and now they are trying to get even. I am much more concerned about Obama’s Marxists tendencies, his record of associations with radical clerics and domestic terrorists, and sheer lack of experience. I suppose you can accuse anyone of anything, make it a big deal, and if they are on the wrong side politically, they are guilty and the media will crucify them.

you have union activists trying to get into your State email and network documents. On the rare occassions that I put something on the network, I always assumed the union had it before the intended recipient. I often created entirely fictitious document solely for the purpose of having them steal them.

Likewise email; you never put anything about personnel or policy in an email that you don’t want to read on the front page of the paper that hates you most.

If there’s money or power in the offing, people program their scanners to catch your portable phone calls. Back when cell phones first came out, it was pretty easy to use a good scanner to catch cell calls. Been out of the business a while now, but I suspect you can still get a scanner that will catch cell calls even if you don’t work for the NSA.

My point is that at a certain level of government, you simply have to put that stuff down because there really isn’t enough security. You have meetings with trusted associates and everyone’s pen stays in their pocket. You fire people who write you that “my understanding of our meeting was” memo.

I know I’m paranoid, I just often wonder if I’m paranoid enough.

Public Email Accounts Secure? Hardly

onlongpond Thursday, September 18th at 7:23AM EST (link)

Anyone who uses public email systems. assuming that they are safe and secure, deserve the grief they get when their email is exposed.

We use the analogy of email on the Internet to sending a post card through the postal system – if you don’t want it read, don’t send it.

My company goes to extraordinary means to secure our Internet email communications. We have software that scans every outbound email for any indication that it includes private information. If such an email is detected, it is automatically routed via a secure email system. We also block internal access to webmail accounts so employees cannot use them from the office. Bottom line is if our email is hacked…we get sued.

People who are more concerned about avoiding scrutiny rather then securing their on-line communications should consider that.

Of course, there was no mention that the hackers broke any laws.

I pray that Gov. Palin’s speechwriters come up with a good soundbyte that encapsulates how the hackers found nothing juicy and how her family continues to be attacked.

Achance (Diary) Thursday, September 18th at 8:23AM EST (link)

she and Todd do discuss some official business on her private account. It is very clear that staff members using both State and private accounts have cc’d Todd Palin. Since Todd is not a State officer, arguably cc’ing him pierces any privilege the government might have, though the government continues to assert privilege.

The State has a formal written policy that all Executive Branch employees must acknowledge by signing which allows de minimis personal use of State electronic resources. In other words, you can get the grocery list or arrange lunch with you spouse or SO and the like, but the price is that if there is a Public Records Act request for your email, the requestor gets your grocery list and knows who you have lunch with.

I never used State email for anything involving policy or personnel and we told other State officers not to. We did have a “rough patch” early in the Administration that started Ms. Palin’s rapid political rise. Most took a lesson from Randy Ruedrich’s travails.

I directed my staff that contract proposals and grievance analyses always be done on the local drive only.

Either nobody told the incoming Administration about the need for this kind of security or the Administration chose not to take the threat seriously.

I think it is disgusting

Many people get emails everyday on their checking account balances and for someone to hack their accounts its very disgusting

Don't be surprised....

madtrapper (Diary) Thursday, September 18th at 8:40AM EST (link)

….if this hacking is linked to the left.

The only crime in this whole thing, according to the socialists, is whether or not Sarah used her private email for Gov’t business? Where the hell do these people come from!!!!

You may not remember this but in 2006 when Lt. gov. Michael Steele, R-MD, ran for the U.S. Senate, he suffered identity theft at the hands of the left.

The investigation was traced back to two Chuck Schumer aids and I believe one of them was prosecuted for it.

Sounds like fun, Han.

An outrage, yes, but this wasn't the Online Left

Tenniru (Diary) Thursday, September 18th at 12:43PM EST (link)

The fact that the Wikileaks source called themselves “Anonymous” and the presence of a /b/ tab on one of the screenshots tells me one thing: this was 4chan trolling. 4chan isn’t exactly to the left or the right, and they’re certainly far removed from what we know as the online left. 4chan, or at least most of /b/, is mostly an organization of professional trolls. They’ve hacked junk at random (for lulz), started basically every internet meme in the past ten years, and recently have been in an intense fight with the Church of Scientology.
Also, they’re generally a smart bunch when it comes to hacking. Not to mention quite decentralized. As their own motto says: “WE ARE ANONYMOUS. WE ARE LEIGON.”

Frankly, I doubt they were trying to advance anyone’s political agenda. This was classic trolling, barging in, proving that they could hack the Yahoo account of a vice presidential candidate, and then giving back the password without doing any actual harm.

I was wondering for a long time how Anonymous will wind up on someone’s radar. I hope the USSS pursues this with all available resources, at least to see exactly how prepared they are to deal with online criminals. And so see Uncle Sam get his lulz.

Good, then sites like FireDogLake and people like Andrew Sullivan will cooperate fully...

Flagstaff (Diary) Thursday, September 18th at 11:13PM EST (link)

she and Todd do discuss some official business on her private account.

Where is the proof of this?

Is there a difference between discussing official business with your spouse and conducting official business? Seems to me there is a big difference. Unless she says something like, “I hereby grant you the authority to shoot a moose,” they really can’t be conducting official business. Don’t know about it legally, though. Are they required to carry tape recorders around to record any discussions of official business that might be verbal?

There is no legitimate reason to criticize her for using a personal account to discuss Alaska business with her hubby. If you do so, you are essentially saying she can only talk to him about it or write him using the US mail. And it wouldn’t be appropriate to use the official system for it, either. There is a long tradition of ignoring any communication between husband and wife in government about government. To gripe about that is petty.

For a different reason, Rush mentioned today that the President never uses email for that very reason. It’s always a good rule of thumb to never put anything on the web, including email, that you don’t want to see everywhere it shouldn’t be.

I’m afraid this subject is too complex to settle here, especially since I don’t know all the facts you seem to have. As I said, how do you know anything that was said in her private account?

Her and her staff’s use of email has garnered her three Ethics Act complaints here in Alaska. Complaints that she WILL lose.

How do you know, and are they significant or just petty political sniping?

If I recall correctly, one of the keys to Willie Brown’s ability to skate past any corruption probes is that nothing incriminating was ever committed to writing – paper or electronic.

Sarah has certainly made some significant misstepts regarding attention to detail and adherence to strict security protocols.

Question: from your insider’s perch on Alaska politics, is Sarah capable of learning from her mistakes and going forward, treating security as a (politically) life-and-death matter?

If not, she’s not going to survive the national stage for long, I fear, not with the huge numbers of people, many of them highly tech-savvy, that arrayed against her who in their unbridled hatred are determined to find something, anything they can exploit.

Watching the various denizens of left and the media, it’s like watching a school of sharks fighting with a flock of vultures, with Sarah the intended morsel. Or the way 1st century Rome (especially Nero) treated Christians.

With regards to your use of local drives – did you erase them afterwards? And how do you prevent “stray hard copies” from ending up in the wrong hands? Especially if, as is evident with Sarah Palin, you can’t put it past your opponent to contract out burglary.

I actually blame myself a bit about this because I was a total a..hole about things like this. After I retired, some took it that happy days were here again. I don’t think she got much if any direction about this sort of stuff, so she just did her own thing unaware of the risks.

As to the local drives. The only issue was that you didn’t want anything out at the time it was in play. The risk of somebody coming in and copying a drive was miniscule. All I wanted was to have the unions and the press not have it before we made it public. The local drives were good for giving that time. They weren’t secure in the league she’s playing these days. If nothing else there’d be a new custodian with good computer skills and working for the DNC cleaning the office tonight. I never had to worry about that.

I meant, under what authority have you read some of her emails?

Beyond that, I wasn’t connecting when you said “privilege.” Were you referring to a claim of privilege being made to keep Alaska administration folks from testifying to the Alaska investigating committee? If so, that is news to me. I thought the Alaska AG just said they wouldn’t be responding to the subpoenas.

For a Democrat-led investigation to try this heavy-handed play against a Governor with such a high approval rating seems foolish. She’s probably going to resign in a few months anyway, and this will give her Republican successor a convenient straw man to pull out when needed. And if she doesn’t resign (because McCain loses) none of this sounds like impeachment material, so they’re cutting their own throat.

OTOH, the VP doesn’t do much anyway, so why couldn’t she just serve out her term as Gov while also serving as VP?

I had an experience the other day that I’d never before had in public life: a reporter picked up the tab!

I did this stuff for twenty years. Never made the paper unless I wanted to, never lacked for plausible deniability, never got a governor I worked for in trouble – even a governor I didn’t like. It’s just tradecraft.

What totally pi__es me off about this whole thing is that it NEVER should have happened! She really didn’t do anything wrong and a bunch of bumbling idiots have turned it into a national scandal.

I didn’t want to work for her – or anybody else. Didn’t do anything beyond tell her first COS, a friend of mine, that if they needed something, I’d be willing. I’d really rather just be an old retired guy, but I can’t believe that people, some of whom I trained and promoted, whose job it was to first do what the Gov wanted and second make sure the Gov didn’t get in trouble let something like this happen.

So her staff let her down and she bungled the follow up. So what? People can understand that. I think she should just lay it all out, take a temporary hit, and move on. She isn’t perfect, and she’ll have better staff at the next level.

I don’t know… maybe that response has downsides, too.

Since the McCain people have come here and essentially taken over, it has become the full-tilt DC stonewall and is starting to get some harsh blowback and not just from the ADN and the crazies that comment there.

I don’t disagree with resisting the subpoena; I’d do it on prerogative and separation of powers grounds. Remember when we were talking about her daughter’s pregnancy? It looked like that would be in the headlines for weeks. It’s an afterthought now.

She should throw all of her garbage out on the lawn, let the press eat up until they get sick, and move on. The press will over-reach — they always do. And then she can play up the “they are piling on” narrative.
