Just imagine if an unmarried Chelsea Clinton had gotten pregnant during Bill’s first run for the presidency. You same folks now praising Ms. Palin as being such an upstanding young woman would have been shoving each other out of the way to condemn Chelsea as a liberal wh*re, whether or not she kept the baby. Now I see that premarital sex doesn’t seem to bother the vast majority of posters here–as long as the person having it is a conservative. Once again, It’s Okay If You’re A Republican.

Republicans talking about family values are like Pete Rose talking about the evils of gambling. John McCain cheated on, and then divorced his first wife after she had a horrible car accident. His pick for VP has a pregnant teenage daughter. Come on guys, get it together, you can do better. At least Bush wasn’t this bad a hypocrite. If family values were actually important to the GOP, they would all be voting for Obama.

That I do believe every life is a precious gift from God. However, circumstances under which this precious gift of life aren’t always blessed by God. Pre-marital sex is still a serious sin in the beholding eyes of God, whatever Bristol’s plans were, they’re now all thrown out of window. In a certain way, Bristol is going to have to pay the price of deciding to go along with ‘five minutes of pleasure’ if I may say so.

Bristol isn’t running for president. Thus, she should be afforded privacy and left alone so she can raise her child peacefully. Being publicly humiliated on national news is punishment enough, let Bristol and her child be alone.

And just for the record, I’ve been in Sara Palin’s situation. In my case my step daughter was in love and thought it would force our hand in agreeing to a marriage. I don’t know if Bristol had similar motivations, but it would not surprise me.

You’ve posted a hypothetical (“what if Chelsea Clinton had gotten pregnant…”), assumed the “Republican” response, and then that assumed response of your own creation. This is the classic building of a strawman, which is difficult to respond to because you are trying to put words in my mouth.

Nonetheless, I will try to respond to what I think you are trying to argue and ignore your attempt to respond on my behalf:

1) Some people on the right would probably condemn Chelsea and somehow argue this as disqualifying her father, just as those on the left are condemning the Palins. But the one doesn’t justify the other; both would be wrong.

But I don’t see how logically this disqualifies the holding of “family values” themselves. We all fall short of our values (or have loved ones fall short of our values) – the test is how we respond to that falling short.

2) The issue of whether premarital sex is right or wrong has nothing to do with how you respond to a person who has gotten pregnant as a result of premarital sex.

And if you actually spent time around the evangelical community, you would see that the predominant response is compassion, not condemnation. Compassion is not hypocrisy, and an accusation of hypocrisy appears to be the subcurrent behind your post.

3) Unless you advocate attainder in reverse (punishing the parents for the sins of the children), so long as the parent have acted in accord with their beliefs (e.g. not tried to push for a secret abortion), the acts of their progeny doesn’t diminish their integrity.

This thread, and the others on Bristol Palin, should be enough proof to introduce a 24-hour waiting period on posting after one has registered. We’ve gone through this before. There’s no other way to avoid these register-post-blam sequences. If these #%@!-for-brains azzhats would have to wait a day to slime the discussion threads, they might just go away and stink up some other venue.

Thank God. The Palins and the RS are really a blessing to me. I mean, I myself have “hidden” derision of teenage pregnancy. It’s my first time to open up myself on this issue and I don’t really know what I should do if these things happen to me.

Everybody who has been a Teenager & in to there 20′s knows that Kid’s don’t listen to their Parents, Because they think they are 10 foot Tall & Bulletproof

In other words they do things Parents wished that they didn’t, Hoped that they wouldn’t & so on

What really worries me about Palin is her environmental policies (especially in regards to drilling in the ANWR). Given the state of our environment these days I think it is evermore important for us, as consumers to support ‘green businesses’ that benefit the environment. For example, http://www.simplestop.net stops your postal junk mail and benefits the environment.

My big question for conservatives is how Palin’s decision to embark on a national campaign reflects on her family values? It seems to me that Gov. Palin’s political ambitions have clouded her judgment. She has a young Down’s Symdrome child at home along with a pregnant, unwed teenage daughter. She knew of both of these challenging family matters when John McCain asked her to join the campaign. Why did she choose to accept the offer to run for Vice President?

It just seems to me that a young woman like Palin really should have passed on the McCain offer. She would have had other opportunities in the future. Sadly, her family is likely to suffer because of her political ambitions.

Why is everyone attacking this girl who isn’t even in office and nobody ever said anything about Mr. Thurmond who had a child with a 15-year-old employee. I don’t get it? He was in office and a judge and everything for a long long long time.

It is an option that the dialect debate between the pro-life and pro-abortion camps drowns out. Adoption.

There are so many families in US who are capable, financially secure, desiring with all their hearts to be parents. But, it seems adoption is rarely mentioned any more in the US. Families are forced to travel overseas and adopt from third-world countries. Sometimes it works out great. Sometimes it is a total nightmare.

If I were Bristol’s parent, I would seriously discuss adoption as an option. It can offer so much good to everyone involved. I do know that it has drawbacks: I was adopted, so I know some of the feelings that adoptees go through (I also know the love and life that my parents provided for me). I have also talked with mothers who have given up their children and it can be rough for them also.

Given Bristol’s age, adoption could help all involved. The statistics are against Bristol and her fiance to have a successful marriage now. If they were to give up the baby, they would have the chance to mature and develop an adult relationship and have a better chance for success in their marriage at later date. I know that the odds ARE great that the baby would taken into a loving home.
