Via The Brody File, a statement from a Dr. Richard Land, who is the President of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission on the Palin pregnancy matter. I understand that this particular individual’s opinion might be somewhat relevant to a few of you?
“This is the pro-life choice. The fact that people will criticize her for this shows the astounding extent to which the secular critics of the pro-life movement just don’t get it. Those who criticize the Palin family don’t understand that we don’t see babies as a punishment but as a blessing. Barack Obama said that if one of his daughters made a mistake and got pregnant out of wedlock he wouldn’t want her to be punished with a child. Pro lifers don’t see a child as punishment.”

justfortoday Monday, September 1st at 2:03PM EST (link)Just imagine if an unmarried Chelsea Clinton had gotten pregnant during Bill’s first run for the presidency. You same folks now praising Ms. Palin as being such an upstanding young woman would have been shoving each other out of the way to condemn Chelsea as a liberal wh*re, whether or not she kept the baby. Now I see that premarital sex doesn’t seem to bother the vast majority of posters here–as long as the person having it is a conservative. Once again, It’s Okay If You’re A Republican.
Nice family values, folks.
Oh, and by the way, I fully expect to be condemned as a troll. That seems to be the standard fallback position for people who can’t come up with a lucid argument against posters who happen to disagree with them. And with anyone who does choose to post a lucid argument against my point, I’d love to read it.

Cheetah772 (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 2:14PM EST (link)That I do believe every life is a precious gift from God. However, circumstances under which this precious gift of life aren’t always blessed by God. Pre-marital sex is still a serious sin in the beholding eyes of God, whatever Bristol’s plans were, they’re now all thrown out of window. In a certain way, Bristol is going to have to pay the price of deciding to go along with ‘five minutes of pleasure’ if I may say so.
Bristol isn’t running for president. Thus, she should be afforded privacy and left alone so she can raise her child peacefully. Being publicly humiliated on national news is punishment enough, let Bristol and her child be alone.
As an evaneglical Christian, I felt I had to get this off my chest.

MCM (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 2:28PM EST (link)Very much agree with what you’ve said here Cheetah. But I just wanted to note – as I’m positive you’ll agree – that Romans 3:23 is applicable here. I don’t know where Bristol’s heart is on this. But I’d hope/guess that there’s some repentance there. If so, then like every last one of us, Christ paid that debt. Thanks be to God. The question isn’t what we’ve done – we’ve all done enough to qualify as sinners. It’s where our heart is now. See generally King David. That same grace and forgiveness is open to every last person – whether Democrat or Republican, murderer or 17 year old who gave in to sexual temptation.
Of course in applauding Bristol we shouldn’t gloss over the initial sin and thus the need for repentance – but neither will I presume that she has not already done so and gotten things right with the Lord. Poor kid. I can’t imagine if every sinful thing I’d done was played out like this.

Mary_Contrary (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 2:32PM EST (link)Bristol doesn’t have to pay the price–Jesus paid it for her. A baby isn’t punishment (as some would say).
Pre-marital sex is a sin, getting drunk is a sin, and stealing is a sin. It just so happens that being pregnant and not married is a very visible sin (at least for the woman). But it’s no more of a sin than a teenager lying to his parents.
No wonder we evangelicals get looked down upon for acting so arrogant and hypocritical. It’s embarrassing.
I'll take the chance of taking you at your word, justfortoday
civil truth (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 2:32PM EST (link)You’ve posted a hypothetical (“what if Chelsea Clinton had gotten pregnant…”), assumed the “Republican” response, and then that assumed response of your own creation. This is the classic building of a strawman, which is difficult to respond to because you are trying to put words in my mouth.
Nonetheless, I will try to respond to what I think you are trying to argue and ignore your attempt to respond on my behalf:
1) Some people on the right would probably condemn Chelsea and somehow argue this as disqualifying her father, just as those on the left are condemning the Palins. But the one doesn’t justify the other; both would be wrong.
But I don’t see how logically this disqualifies the holding of “family values” themselves. We all fall short of our values (or have loved ones fall short of our values) – the test is how we respond to that falling short.
2) The issue of whether premarital sex is right or wrong has nothing to do with how you respond to a person who has gotten pregnant as a result of premarital sex.
And if you actually spent time around the evangelical community, you would see that the predominant response is compassion, not condemnation. Compassion is not hypocrisy, and an accusation of hypocrisy appears to be the subcurrent behind your post.
3) Unless you advocate attainder in reverse (punishing the parents for the sins of the children), so long as the parent have acted in accord with their beliefs (e.g. not tried to push for a secret abortion), the acts of their progeny doesn’t diminish their integrity.
Well I’ve taken you at your word; I trust you will respond in kind.

MCM (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 2:44PM EST (link)Given the reaction of the left to this story and their apparent belief about how Christians would respond, apparently a little bit of elucidation on Christian thought is helpful here. I’m always surprised how little non-Christians seem to understand about Christianity.
Part of that is their own fault. But undoubtedly a big part of it is our own. Forget politics for a moment. The media is asking Christians about sexual sin and looking for how Christians react to this. In my fantasy world where I believe the MSM is actually interested in the answer and will portray it fairly, I hope that we Christians represent our namesake well here.
I disagree partially...
Cheetah772 (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 2:44PM EST (link)Bristol still must pay the consequences of engaging in premarital sex. All sin is forgiven if one confesses his sins to God (1 John 1:9-10). Forgiveness doesn’t sweep away the consequences. For instance, if a drunk gets in a fight and loses one of his eyes, but repents of his sin aftewards, he still has only one good eye.
I cannot condone what Bristol did (premarital sex), so the circumstances under which got her pregnant isn’t most definitely blessed or even approved by God. Neither did it mean the baby should be promptly aborted, thank God for that! Bristol did the right thing by refusing to punish her child by ending the baby’s life prematurely. Adding another sin upon sin isn’t the smartest thing to do in the world.

Another Degree of Separation
DBHouston (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 3:12PM EST (link)between sex and consequence. When I was young I bought Hugh Heffner’s sexual revolution BS because the pill separated sex from pregnancy. But the moralists intervened and stigmatized proscribing the pill in exchange for “abstinence,” and now that protection is lost.
Now we have the full consequence of pregnancy out of wedlock: Education and careers on hold, difficulties in attracting a new mate, a continuing need to work for two. There are practical reasons to tell your hormones to wait.
Let’s be honest. The 75% illegitimacy rate KEEPS the black community in poverty and effectively bars them from the middle class. (The middle class are defined by those who forgo near term pleasures for greater rewards in the future.) White girls have abortions.
Popular culture values consumption and popularity, which is validated by owning things and attracting others. Couple this with raging hormones and you ask a lot of a young couple.
It’s time to tell young girls the truth, prescribe them the pill and get them the HPV vaccine. Tell them also that if they make the pro-life choice and choose to raise the child, they make their lives, their parent’s lives and the communities life harder. If the answer is still yes, I wish them all the best.

MrFix3 Monday, September 1st at 4:17PM EST (link)My big question for conservatives is how Palin’s decision to embark on a national campaign reflects on her family values? It seems to me that Gov. Palin’s political ambitions have clouded her judgment. She has a young Down’s Symdrome child at home along with a pregnant, unwed teenage daughter. She knew of both of these challenging family matters when John McCain asked her to join the campaign. Why did she choose to accept the offer to run for Vice President?
It just seems to me that a young woman like Palin really should have passed on the McCain offer. She would have had other opportunities in the future. Sadly, her family is likely to suffer because of her political ambitions.
Can't take a hint, huh?

Bingo
Just_Me Monday, September 1st at 4:25PM EST (link)The problem here is that the left has long painted the social conservative/religious voter/pro life voter with a brush that defines them as judgemental and lacking in compassion.
The reality is that Christians get human frailty, we get that people fail, and we get that nobody is perfect.
In this situation we all see what is definitely a stress on a family, but the deed is done, forgiveness and repentance are the name of the game, and at this point you rework goals and plans and do what you can to support the person in the right decision.
Sarah Palin’s daughter has a tough row to hoe, but her parents are there for her, they love her and are supporting her decision. It won’t be easy, but this also isn’t the end of the world.
I think one difference we see here is a young man who is also ready to take on the responsibility of his family and the life he created.
That is somewhat troubling but if
dbecraft Monday, September 1st at 4:26PM EST (link)you look at it not in personal ambitions but her desire to do what she can to help the country get back on the right track. We certainly need that kind of honesty and integrity that she brings to this ticket.
I’d say she has managed both family and career very well to this point and see no need for her to stop at Alaska. We need her more than she needs us.

mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 4:29PM EST (link)You are right, and when I read Mrs. Palins statement I thought what a fortunate young lady her daughter is to have a loving family to support her.
I wish more people would donate to crisis pregnancy centers because they really do help moms and babies. When you go to Wal-Mart of the grocery store pick up some diapers. Have a “baby shower” at your church for the pregnancy center. LOL Women love buying and wrapping baby gifts and it would be a reason for them to get togheter and socialize. When you are at the drug store or McDonalds pick up a gift card and mail it to them.
I think the answer to the single mom issue is marriage. I wish Christians would encourage marriage more for single mothers instead of single mom sunday school clasees. Feminism is just totally a part of everyone’s thinking though.
Single moms need to be introduced to stable strong single men to provide and protect them as their husband. Then they can have more Christian children and raise them up to be good citizens. If the majority of single moms married the ones who could not marry could be easily supported by other people.
The LDS church is the only one I know that really encourages marriage of single moms as the answer. I’m not LDS it’s just what I’ve noticed.

Isnt your worry that once that happens the environmentalists will lose tremendous credibility? Isnt your real worry that the common-sense GOP energy policy will keep driving down energy prices and will put the halt to Al Gore’s fantasies?

I'm getting tired of this garbage.
Elizabeth (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 6:26PM EST (link)As someone qualified to speak on this particular issue, let me put this garbage to rest once and for all. My husband and I have three young daughters, one of whom has Down Syndrome. We care very much about raising our children ourselves, and have made significant sacrifices so that we won’t have to place our children in daycare. We are homeschooling our eldest, and intend to do the same with the others when they’re old enough. While both my husband and I would prefer that I be able to stay home with the kids, circumstances have made that impossible at the moment, so I’m going to work full time while my husband will be a stay-at-home dad. Because I was careful enough to marry someone who shares my values, I have no concern whatsoever about my husband’s ability to raise our daughters as I would. From all appearances, Sarah Palin has likewise chosen a husband that shares her values and is patently capable enough to raise their children.
As to the Down Syndrome issue: assuming Trig has no significant health issues in addition to the Down Syndrome diagnosis, there is absolutely nothing more complicated in caring for a Down Syndrome baby than there is in caring for any other baby. They drink, sleep, poop, and that’s about it. He’s probably at about the age when he’ll start receiving some infant stimulation therapy, which for most people is administered by a worker who comes to the home to work with the child. Mom, Dad, or any sibling can do basic exercises with him that are no more complex than most people do when playing with a baby.
For crying out loud, folks, raising a child with Down Syndrome doesn’t mean a life sentence of confinement to one’s home. If you want some perspective on what it’s like to raise one of these kids, why don’t you go and read some of the congratulations notices on Trig’s web site.

Feminists for Life Illustrates the Problem we Face
DBHouston (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 8:24PM EST (link)The FFL is a poster child for the two edged sword of mitigating consequences of poor judgement and bad decisions. FFL has a fundamental thesis that the consequence of single parenting should not be allowed to motivate abortion. Unfortunately, if we remove the consequence, it will not be there to deter unmarried sex.
I am advocating that we not sugar coat the life a single mother often leads after the baby is born: Tell teen girls the truth and get her on the pill. The abstinence moral Disney story people hope will work is no match for the Hollywood anything goes agenda pushed by today’s popular culture. Don’t tell teens they will be sinners but DO tell them they will suffer.
If private organizations want to step in and mitigate consequence, it will be a good thing. Getting pregnant should not be a ticket to government largess. If you want more of something, reward it.
Let’s not leave out adoption.
This is not an easy thing to sort out but it is not good for America to have more and more single parents. I am not a mean person but let’s not pretend that single parents will have as easy a life as coupled parents.
There is another option for Bristol
UseYourBrain Monday, September 1st at 8:28PM EST (link)It is an option that the dialect debate between the pro-life and pro-abortion camps drowns out. Adoption.
There are so many families in US who are capable, financially secure, desiring with all their hearts to be parents. But, it seems adoption is rarely mentioned any more in the US. Families are forced to travel overseas and adopt from third-world countries. Sometimes it works out great. Sometimes it is a total nightmare.
If I were Bristol’s parent, I would seriously discuss adoption as an option. It can offer so much good to everyone involved. I do know that it has drawbacks: I was adopted, so I know some of the feelings that adoptees go through (I also know the love and life that my parents provided for me). I have also talked with mothers who have given up their children and it can be rough for them also.
Given Bristol’s age, adoption could help all involved. The statistics are against Bristol and her fiance to have a successful marriage now. If they were to give up the baby, they would have the chance to mature and develop an adult relationship and have a better chance for success in their marriage at later date. I know that the odds ARE great that the baby would taken into a loving home.
DBHouston, there is a problem
Rod_Patrick (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 8:35PM EST (link)with your logic.
Are we so sure that the pregnancy is unwanted? That is presumptuous given that we do not fully know the facts of the case.
People and families think differently even among democrats and among conservatives. WE should not assume too much.
Sounds like the baby is already assured of a loving home
Jack_Savage (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 8:36PM EST (link)Although I have always sais that strengthening the adoption choice should also be a top priority for us pro-lifers.
I am pro-life too.
mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 9:17PM EST (link)I really disagree with pushing adoption first. Every effort should first be put in keeping mom and baby together. If that is not possible a relative should be chosen. If there is no relative then outside the family as a last resort. The problem with single moms isn’t the mothering it’s that they do not have a husband to provide and protect them. A unwed women’s father could provide that role. The government often provides that role with projects, afdc, food stamps, and medicaid.
It’s a very traumatic thing for both mother and baby to be apart. I’m not against adoption but I think we should do all we can do keep mom and baby together. Instead of adopting why not encourage couples to allow a unwed mother to live with them for a year. Or churches could sponser a mother by paying her rent so she could stay at home with her infant/toddler.
“Families are forced to travel overseas and adopt from third-world countries.”
I don’t like babies being adopted out of their country either. I know it’s always looked at as a humanitarian thing but there are so many risks to the children. With the amount of money that couples spend to adopt children in third world countries that same amount of money could probably support several biological moms and babies for their entire life.
What do you mean by forced?
What does financially secure have to do with it?
Why should adoption be a priority to pro-lifers?
HUGE difference.

UseYourBrain Monday, September 1st at 11:23PM EST (link)Since we are talking about a high-level politician with the possibility of a good income, nanny services can be employed. But in a normal situation nanny services would not be an option.
People are forced to adopt overseas because there are literally no children in the US available to adopt since Roe V Wade.
Financial security is one of the deciding criteria in allowing adoptions to go forward. I guess I would expect people who are pro-life to have an understanding that living involves more than just respiration, hydration, and food ingestion. And two out of three of these activities involves money.
I never said adoption should be a priority for pro-lifers. I said that since your side and the pro-choice (pro-abortion) side have started fighting, adoption as an answer to unwanted pregnancies has died out.

I’m not gonna enter the abortion debate with any of you though, because it’s not a black and white issue, but that’s how you all see it (like EVERY other issue in the world).
I read some of these comments and the blog accusing The Obama Campaign of orchestrating the BS on Daily Kos, without ANY proof, but demanding proof of the hypocrisy of conservatives. There’s your example rigth there. The thing that turns me off from conservatives is the lack of compassion for your fellow Americans, regardless of their political leanings. Liberals are not America haters. I LOVE this country. I hate fascism bigotry and misogyny. I hate rich people who think they’re better than the little people. Those are the true elitists.
You can call me all the names you want, it’ll just serve to prove my point.

Isn't that what love is, doing those mudane responsibilities?
mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 11:32PM EST (link)That is how babies and children feel love, when they are cared for.
So you'll allow a police officer who tasers an unarmed *11 year old* to keep his badge?
Martin Knight (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 11:44PM EST (link)Is this another form of abortion I haven’t heard about?
You keep looking at from the baby's point of view
UseYourBrain Monday, September 1st at 11:51PM EST (link)I am looking at it from the parents-to-be point of view and the work they have cut out for them.
Most American 17-year olds do not have the experience or capabilities to raise a family on their own.
It seems she abused her powers
shooflyguy68 Monday, September 1st at 11:57PM EST (link)She should not have involved herself in the case or pressured the troopers bosses. There are laws in place to punish criminals and if this trooper was guilty of a crime, he should have been punished in a court of law. I don’t blame Gov Palin for her personal feelings on the matter (I would have felt the same way), only on her choice to apparently abuse her station by working outside the law. That’s poor judgement on her part.
Now, another troll discussing the Monegan issue by corrupt democrats and cloned republicans in Alaska.
Rod_Patrick (Diary) Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:01AM EST (link)Go away.
Btw, have you consulted your friends from dKOs? You run counter to their agenda that PALIN DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO USE HER POWERS.
We're intelligent adults, here
civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:03AM EST (link)We know about money and cost of living – and we know that parenting is about a lot more than money, about at lot of things that don’t have a price. There’s sacrifice and self-denial, for starters.
Your comments about adoption trends and facile correlations with the abortion debate are simply ill-informed.

Because if she does,
Rod_Patrick (Diary) Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:05AM EST (link)She would use some of her Alaskan Guards to guard her daughter like a prisoner.
Your argument is foolish. Are sent by the Anti-Palin ADN?
Mercy, why don't you guys get together and
dbecraft Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:13AM EST (link)spread the money around.
These are stupid arguments in the long run. Americans have to get by on their own at some point. I don’t care how government becomes socialist or otherwise, people will eventually have to make it on their own.
Now just how does any of your stupid arguments make any sense with this obvious statement.
There is no way that government can take money from the wealthy and re-distribute it to the poor to make everything alright. So just what do you do after the effort? I know, tax them more… geez. Think that they might leave the country?
(Look at California’s problem)..

I've been here 2 years and you've been
shooflyguy68 Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:14AM EST (link)here 2 months and you’re calling me a troll and telling me to go away? LOL. There’s nothing wrong with pointing out that the governor is under investigation and there appears to be some credible evidence against her. We’ll find out soon enough if it’s a big deal or not.
That’s the problem with choosing a VP before getting to know her or having her vetted. This was and is a horrible pick for McCain and I’m afraid this pick will cost him the election.
baby's point of view
mom2oneson (Diary) Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:18AM EST (link)You are right about that, the baby’s point of view.
I disagree about the 17-year-olds not being able to parent. Honestly who is ready to nurse a baby ever two hours for two months without a break? 17 or 45 it’s something you just do and learn you can’t be experienced for that if it’s your first time caring for an infant.
The main issue I see is with housing, securing an apartment without someone over the age of 21 to co-sign the lease. A roomate situation would always be an option if there wasn’t a co-signer.
Sorry shoofly ... I don't see this as any different from the so-called "US Attorneys' Scandal" ...
Martin Knight (Diary) Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:19AM EST (link)It’s simply a case of reporters screaming “Scandal! Controversy!”, running around and waving their arms in feigned panic.
Under these new “rules“, any form of altercation with a subordinate means the subordinate has life-time job security.
Monegan apparently was not producing results on more than just Hank Wooten keeping his gun, badge and taser and Palin was well within her rights to remove him from his position and offer him his former job.
It’s not a surprise that Monegan won’t like that and make a big stink.

shooflyguy68 Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:24AM EST (link)Fortunately, I read that we’ll have resolution before the election. If it’s nothing, it will be a nice talking point for her – she did what she had to do to get that trooper off the force.
But then again..some things become clearer after a few

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:27AM EST (link)I searched and you’re really belong to the mainstays.
But, you know, the timing of your comments is so bad. There are 6 trolls and mobies around, RS is slow, many of us (or maybe it’s just me) couldn’t even notice the names.
It’s so hard to differentiate the trolls from thelegitimate comments of the opposers.
Being 2 years here at RS, I hope you understand that.
What does this comment have to do with mine
civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:27AM EST (link)How did my comment get shoehorned into an assertion that I was against individual responsibility and in favor of socialist forced redistribution of wealth. Or did you get mixed up on whom you were replying to?

financial security
mom2oneson (Diary) Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:33AM EST (link)They aren’t being forced to adopt. They want to adopt. Again I think a couple who is looking at adoption should first do everything possible to keep the child with the mother or a relative.
The whole financial security seems like you think infants of the very low income or low income would be better being raised by people who are financially secure.
Hydration and food do cost but they are inexpensive here in the US. We are used to eating processed food and meats but grains and beans are still very inexpensive. Babies can get all of their nutrition from nursing too.
The USDA and state gives out food stamps too for anyone who is very low income.

Adoption *should* be a priority for pro-lifers, as much as Crisis Pregnancy Centers.
Martin Knight (Diary) Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:35AM EST (link)Not withstanding the fact that every attempt should be made to keep mother and child together.
In this case, there’s no doubt that mother and child would be cared for, so why separate them?
the pro-choice side usually acts like a full term pregnancy is a trauma.
mom2oneson (Diary) Tuesday, September 2nd at 12:39AM EST (link)I think that is one reason why both sides haven’t “met” on the adoption issue.

financial security
UseYourBrain Tuesday, September 2nd at 6:49AM EST (link)Is merely one of the criteria used by adoption agencies to determine if you are suitable candidates to adopt a child. That’s all I was saying.
People attempting to adopt children do it because they want children and their own families. Of course they do not want to take a child away from a mother who truly wants to keep her baby. They are looking for unwanted children where the birthparent(s) have let the baby go.
Abortion has pretty much removed the pool of children in the US that fall into that category.
