Don’t abort…Just deport

In another thread, I owned up to feeling some moral qualms on my opposition to the the dream act. After reading other comments, I must thank my fellow redstaters for teaching me that the golden rule doesn’t apply to Mexican children. There is a lot wrong with the content of the dream act.  But the ferocity of the opposition and the gleeful support for deporting people who have lived their whole lives here exposes a dark side to so-called social conservatism.

When it comes to abortion, I have no doubt that the life of a preborn baby trumps the wishes of the woman carrying him or her in her womb. Even here, I do not feel any joy in the mother’s anguish. Abortion is simply immoral.

I am absolutely committed to secure borders and a strong national defense. But if we cannot prevent a 3 year old from slipping across the border, then we should think twice about deporting her 20 years later. Is the dream act flawed? You bet it is.  But I will not claim any moral high ground for sending an American in every way but birth to a strange country. I pity those who can joke about it.

I know I’m asking for a torrent of insults.

The US shouldn't be obligated

to keep them here, but I agree that it is both un-pragmatic from a utilitarian standpoint and immoral from an ethical standpoint to send de facto (if not de jure) Americans to a foreign country where they will be treated badly. (Mexico is not the place to live if you’re young, dark-skinned, and can’t speak Spanish natively.)

I won’t recommend the diary, because I think that it is counterproductive in fostering unity, but let it be known that while I sympathize with absolutist views on border issues (God knows I wouldn’t be sympathetic to libertarians if I didn’t endorse some level of absolutism) and see them as being held in good faith, I agree with you.

I believe the ferocity can be directly...

correlated to the Democrats and Republicans constantly attempting to reward ILLEGAL behavior. I have no problem with kids who came here illegally with their parents getting to be citizens I do have a problem with them then getting to keep those law breaking parents here as a reward. If a Congressman or Senator wants to do a one page bill that allows legality to the those children AFTER they have graduated college or joined the military because ILLEGALS should not be allowed to join the military and less the ability in the future to reward their parents then that bill would have majority support.

I have fought my government over AMNESTY for 4 solid years and am disgusted and angry that they keep attempting to reward those who not only crossed the border or overstayed their visas to be in this Country illegally but used false social security numbers which is a FELONY for you and me and should be for them as well.

I have a partial solution for that.

Stop all federal funding for colleges and college education, and we don’t have to worry about the status of recipients.

Colleges need to be right up there with Planned Parenthood and ACORN for priority across-the-board defunding.

I appreciate the concerns raised by Aesthete and Jaded

If I failed to be clear, I am very much in agreement with Jaded’s view on treating the adults differently from the children they bring with them. Certainly a general amnesty would be a disgrace.

I had always thought that anyone who serves honorably in the US military would be entitled to a fast path to citizenship. I have mixed feelings on the parents. Would anyone really like to deport the parents of a soldier who died valiantly for the cause of our freedom and security?

I am sensitive to the issue of unity among conservatives as raised by Aesthete. Perhaps there should be a one or two page conservative version of this act that we can all embrace.

We have a nation to save, people.
