The President had an opportunity tonight to challenge the creativity and ingenuity and compassion of the American people in a way that has seldom been done in the last several years. Unfortunately and inexplicably President Obama chose instead to make a political speech.
He would have been wise to call us to action, to ask for volunteers, to ask for help and ideas – Americans would have gladly answered. Instead, President Obama spent a third of his speech explaining how he had been on top of the situation from day one – sorry, but the people of the Gulf who are living through this nightmare aren’t buying that one.
Then he spent another third of his speech talking about the need to pass another budget crushing piece of legislation that the American people don’t want – Cap and Trade. Instead of saying let’s work together and figure out how to first stop the leak and then figure out how to ensure this never happens again – the President pushed a radical agenda which consisted of stopping the use of petroleum, the primary source of America’s energy. Can you say, “new taxes and increased costs that no American can afford?”
In that speech, it was as though the President chose to ignore the clean up efforts of the natural disaster and focus on the clean up efforts of his Administration’s PR disaster. At a time when the county is crying for leadership, the President should have remembered the real victims here – the people of the Gulf Coast who lost their coastline, who lost their livelihood and who lost their lives.

Mike Huckabee runs closer to Obama than any other Republican in the field, taking 44 percent of the vote to the president’s 46 percent. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney trails by a slightly wider margin, taking 42 percent to Obama’s 45 percent.
Huckabee and Romney are at this point the strongest challengers to Obama, according to the national survey of 650 adults.”
Redstate is a reflection of America, where conservatives come together to debate and promote the cause. The poll shows that among Republicans, Huckabee is in the lead to be our standard bearer in the next presidential election. While it is too early to debate who is better on our issues for 2012, it is not too early to defend Huckabee as deserving of our respect. Furthermore, not only does he have great credibility here at redstate, there is no other person who is polling better than him against Obama right now. NOBODY. The conservatives support him because he is in line with our issues without any flip-flopping. That gives him a lot more credibility than some others as I could mention (but won’t because the calendar still says 2010 and we have an important midterm to focus on right now).

Jaded: I don't care.
houstoneagle (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 8:03PM EST (link)I don’t care about who America is or isn’t voting for. I was defending Huckabee’s right not to be called a jackass and to point out the credibility and respect he has among his fellow conservatives on this site with the exception of a very few machine-gun multi-commenters,
It’s not enough to engage in the issues. People gotta crap all over the guy personally just because he made a good post (?). I guess that’s a good sign for Huckabee that the very vocal minority on this site is so panic-stricken at the fact he is consistently polling at or near the top of every Republican preference poll these days, and since they have no ammunition on the issues, they just blast away personally out of desperation.
I’m not promoting Huckabee as a candidate. It’s not even 2011 yet let alone 2012.
I’d be a lot less optimistic for Huckabee down the line if the comments gravitated away from the personal attacks and more toward substantive arguments.
I will vote for Obama in 2012 if Romney is the Republican nominee, but you don’t see me bad-mouthing him personally like the anti-Hucks.

Not sure what you've been reading, Houston.
acat (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 11:06PM EST (link)What I’ve said has been issues-driven.
Huckabee is a populist. That’s not personal, that’s issues-based. He governed with a big-nanny-government mindset, which is precisely why he is not what we need.
He’s not fiscally conservative. Issues-based. See above. He cannot win over the tea party anti-tax movement, and in this environment that’s quite dangerous for a candidate.
He’s not here to have a conversation, he’s fishing for money for his PAC with these drive-by postings. Issues of how he campaigns, which is a good clue about what’s important to the man.
In almost a year, Huckabee (or, more likely, an intern inside his campaign) has posted many of these opinion pieces, but neither the governor nor the intern has responded to any question in reply to his posts, or to any other article here on Red State.
That’s both rude, as most drive-by-postings are, but more importantly, it’s short-sighted. Huckabee has obviously got one or two detractors on Red State; time would be better spent engaging and trying to win over or at least blunt the dislike.
By the way, is your anti-Romney bias religious in nature?

I’m not much of a fan either; I was a Fred! guy. But protocol is always to call any (ex)public official by the title associated with the highest office held — so Governor it is. Second, nobody went running to W to ask about the oil spill (even though he’s an oil guy of sorts) — and if they did, he’d be a “no comment”. That’s because public officials with CLASS don’t interject themselves into issues of public controversy whose responsibility lies with the person *currently* holding their old office.
E.g. Bush 41 never criticized — and hardly ever commented on anything at all — while Clinton was president. Clinton, well, he did violate that somewhat, but truly not as much as he could have done. And W’s been virtually mum on The Unicorn King. Carter, well, Carter’s just an [donkey].
And…Huck probably shouldn’t step over Mike Beebe.

Cheney was a VP. VPs are the attack dogs of their campaigns and administrations; hence Cheney attacks Teh Won, and Gore attacked W. (Quayle…well, he was just Quayle. But Mondale attacked Reagan…)
And accusing me of casting W as blameless is fightin’ words. You would be hard pressed to find any conservative more…”displeased”…with 43 than I. Even so, I can’t help but respect the dignity with which he, and Reagan before him, treated the office when he held it, and after he left it. Especially in contrast to the character or ability — or lack thereof — of those who came before and after.
And yes — ex-Presidents “used to” help in times of crisis — because the current President asked. The Xes — the good ones, anyway — don’t interject themselves, they are asked. Usually those sorts of things involve a big Rose Garden PR stunt, with the current and Xes all lined up for the camera, and speeches…I musta been out clearing tarballs from the beach when that happened.
But again, we’re talking about an ex-governor here, not an ex-president. So…do you really think Beebe should have invited Huck to some press conference to help him express condolences? Or that Huck should stomp all over the news coverage by interfering in the Beebe Administration’s handling of the affair?
I guarantee you would be the first on the barricades to criticize him as an interfering busybody with no business intruding on the grief of the affected families if he did. I can hear it already: “He’s obviously just trying to get more camera time to help chase the nomination…”

cwilson (Diary) Friday, June 18th at 2:31PM EST (link)My best friend and I, so that we would STAY friends, agreed to stop talking politics for six months in 2008 — because he was a Huck guy, and I was…less than complimentary of his preferences. (He was similarly underwhelmed by my guy, Fred!) And I’m</b< in love with Huck?
No, I just try to be intellectually honest, even about people I don’t particularly agree with or like. You, on the other hand, seem just a bit irrational when it comes to Governor Huckabee.
But thanks for the laugh.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom — go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Thanks for not posting
aesthete (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 3:48PM EST (link)to the front page. I doubt that you will comment on our posts, but I do appreciate at least that level of respect for RS’s readership. That said, I don’t think it’s so much “leadership” that’s needed so much as management. I don’t look for the President to “lead” us in anything but war, and we elected him to be a steward of the country’s highest executive office, not to “lead” us. If I need a President to tell me to donate my time or money for me to do it, I’m a pretty sorry human being! Perhaps it’s a semantic qualm, but there it is.

Sorry, Huckie - no sale.

Otherwise, this is just another press release, and if I wanted to read those, I’d use Google News as their interface is better for that kind of thing.

SteveLA (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 8:03PM EST (link)I don’t know but every time I hear about Governor Huckabee or watch him make comments and think ahead to the 2012 election and prospect of him running again, well this comes to mind.
(It’s a historical reference by the way)

houstoneagle (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 8:11PM EST (link)Get used to it, Steve–Huckabee is here to stay, he will be running, and he is going to beat the pants off Romney. Might as well resign yourself to it. He’ll at least be Palin’s veep.

I'm sure of that too
SteveLA (Diary) Wednesday, June 16th at 8:17PM EST (link)Hucka Hucka will attract the social conservative vote, that much I agree with and unfortunately he will once again play the spoiler.
As we saw with the Kerfuffle recently over recent comments about “Truces” and such, there is are a whole bunch of folks like I assume you who don’t want to make the nomination about beating Obama on competency and a real record of running a government. Hucka Hucka will pander to those folks and you “Big Time” and have a pretty big following.

Beating Romney?---who cares, neither will be the nominee
JSobieski (Diary) Thursday, June 17th at 12:24AM EST (link)and Palin would not pick him to be her Veep.
At this time in the last presidential election cycle, nobody thought Clinton would lose to a guy named Barak Obama. Look for a similar winner this time—only out of right field rather than left
So go ahead, and keep talking about how your guy will beat Romney. I suspect he will, but it won’t matter.
My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.
