To President Barack Obama, Majority Leader Harry Reid, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat Members of Congress:
The Constitution starts with “WE THE PEOPLE” and it’s time you start remembering that.
American families on a daily basis make hard choices in order to live within their means.
Why can’t Congress and our federal government do the same?
I urge you to work towards balancing the budget.
I urge you to cut our taxes so families can save more and to cut the wasteful spending that is mortgaging the future of generations of Americans and severely limiting their ability to prosper.
Instead of your own re-election, put families in your district and state first.
I am signing this simple: “BALANCE, CUT, SAVE” petition because I believe it is these three things that you should remember when making decisions about new spending, taxes and health care in the weeks ahead.
If you stick to these guiding lights, you can’t go wrong.
Mr. President and members of Congress, I’ve kept it simple for you:
BALANCE, CUT, SAVE.
That’s what should guide you in your decisions in the week’s ahead. My family can’t afford the decisions you are making on my behalf so I am signing this petition to remind you of what is important:
My Family, My Country And My Freedom.
Thank you and God Bless America!

"5" and "NT"
Britcom (Diary) Wednesday, August 12th at 5:49AM EST (link)My understating is that back when RedState had a ratings system, “5″ was a top rating. People carry on with that system by giving a 5 rating to a comment or a diary as way of saying that they like it. Multiple 5′s multiply their rating.
“NT” in the title of a comment means “no text in the comment body” i.e. the title is the only comment they are writing. It is a courtesy for those reading the recent comments scroll
seen over here =====================================>>
it signifies that one need not click on the comment since the title is all there is to read.

aesthete (Diary) Monday, August 10th at 7:41PM EST (link)Mr. Huckabee, I don’t know if it was your intention for this posting to give this impression, but IMO, this article is little more than shameless pandering on your part. Admittedly, I’m not exactly your biggest fan, but I do think that the Redstate community has certain expectations for its diarists and OPs to either be informative or provocative, and a plug to your site isn’t what I look for when I go to Redstate. From all appearances, you’re a fairly sharp guy (even if I disagree with many aspects of your governance in AR). Put that intelligence to use in creating an insightful, informative, or entertaining post. I assure you, the Redstate community will be much more responsive in that instance. Just my opinion; take it or leave it.

Agree with you aesthete. I would like Gov. Huckabee to come to RS and post an insightful, knowledgeable diary. Especially since he is out of politics. It is difficult to read something that seems a rehash of campaign slogans. I get that everyday in the mail or in phone calls with requests for money. We are past that and have moved on. In fact< I would like to not hear campaign slogans for a long time. I want to hear substance and discussion. No more politics as defined by politicians. But governance as defined by the people.

mbecker908 (Diary) Tuesday, August 11th at 8:44AM EST (link)stood up in front of audience and audience and tv show after tv show and lied about his record on taxes in AR. He attempted to defame the Club for Growth because they simply put up informative ads that were videos of him asking the AR Legislature for new taxes and pointing out his actual record as Governor.
I could go on but we beat this subject to death in the primaries along with, fortunately, Governor Huckabee. I’m hard pressed to understand why we are supposed to be handling this guy with anything even closely related to kid gloves, given his appalling record as Governor and his pathetic campaign based on dissembling (his support of the Fair Tax), half truths and outright lies (about his record). We can do better or we deserve the walk in the wilderness.

aesthete (Diary) Tuesday, August 11th at 12:53AM EST (link)Just an interest in seeing quality pieces from our so-called “leaders” that show that they view us as humans with functioning cerebral cortexes, rather than throwing stuff on the wall to see if it sticks (and donates!). If they can’t do that (or rather, if they can’t find competent staffer to do it), then they should go elsewhere.

Nick Haynes (Diary) Monday, August 10th at 8:49PM EST (link)I am tired of our conservative “leadership” (and, in this case “conservative” “leadership”) spamming our front pages with their op-ed pieces or requests for money, emails, etc.
Do you really want my money? My signature? My time? My email?
Then LEAD.
Put your propositions out there about how you would solve the problems which face our nation today. Don’t try to get me onboard with a cute little three-word catchphrase.
Actually tell us how you would solve the budget deficit.
Actually tell us how you would cut wasteful spending.
Actually tell us how and where you would lower taxes.
A petition is all well and good, but a petition doesn’t do squat. If they aren’t going to listen to hundreds (if not thousands) of people who took the time to show up at a town hall, what in the blue hell makes you think that they’ll pay attention to names on a computer screen or sheet of paper? Further, the lack of propositions that our “leadership” is willing to put out there, in any forum, is causing me heartburn as I have to defend the abject refusal of my party leadership to present an alternative to the wasteful, corrupt ways of the Obama administration and the Pelosi speakership.
And, to the directors: Please, for the love of Pete, quit allowing these “leaders” to junk up the front page with what looks like a badly formatted email that would get caught by my spamblocker. This isn’t just about Huckabee, although he was the impetus for this screed. This is about every single “leader” of our movement that treats RedState as a way to move the minions rather than a place to engage in deliberate and intelligent debate about the direction our party and our movement should take.
And a PS: I very rarely donate out of lack of funds (for the time being), but instead put in the work on the ground. But I would easily be willing to drop $100 into the coffers of the campaign of the first “leader” who actually engages in dialogue on this site.
If you’re not networking, you’re not helping.
Did you notice no instructions to come into the Party?
ColdWarrior (Diary) Monday, August 10th at 11:57PM EST (link)The Republican Party is at half strength nationwide when it comes to “boots on the ground,” where “the rubber meets the road;” that is, in the precinct committeeman ranks.
Any thought that maybe a “leader” like Mike Huckabee might encourage RedStaters to come into the Party where they can actually vote for the Party leadership? Cast votes locally to endorse candidates in the primary elections? Help get out the vote? Help make sure, as poll watchers, that only eligible citizens who are actually registered vote in the elections?
Nah. Apparently too pedestrian. The weird thing about it is that he obviously understands this. As do all the “conservative” Republican senators, including Jim DeMint, who could have stopped a Senate floor vote injecting another $2 B into the Clunkers program — but did not. Precinct committeemen were instrumental in getting them elected.
I watch Huckabee’s program once in a while. Gosh, maybe I missed the program where he implored conservative Republicans to flock into the Republican Party to take it back. I get his e-mails, as I was foolish enough to contribute to his campaign early on. Maybe I missed that e-mail where he explained all this to his contributers. Never once have I received an e-mail Mike Huckabee asking me to become a precinct committeeman. Nah, he just wants money.
Or, like now, he wants me to sign some meaningless petition.
Which no elected official will pay any attention to.
The ONLY THING that matters is whether the outcome of the next election is impacted. The BEST way an individual conservative Republican can impact the Party is by becoming a voting member of it — that is, by getting elected as a voting member of the Party — a precinct committeeman (unless, perhaps, an individual happens to be wealthy enough to throw money at the process — but that assumes money can buy election outcomes). That way you, the individual, can have a voice in the direction of the Party — both as to its elected leadership and as to which candidate gets the endorsement of the Party in the primary elections.
I’ve read Mark Levin’s book. Jim DeMint’s. Joe Scarborough’s. Etc. In all cases, the “what to do,” “Civics 101″ sections are long on “write another blog” type recommendations and short on concretes. Nary a word about “Gee, you ought to become a voting member of the Party and throw out all the ‘leaders,’ especially in light of the fact that half the voting slots are open, and that it only takes a minimal amount of effort to become a voting member of the Party.”
Almost as if they’d rather NOT have conservatives flock into the Party in droves. Maybe because they prefer the status quo. Maybe the status quo (remember, always “follow the money”) allows them to stay in their “leadership” and “national spokesmen” highly-compensated roles and continue to market their books as part of the “conservative grievance industry.”
Like I said, I have not read the books and e-mails of every conservative Republican “leader.” If anyone has any evidence that any of them (currently in office or former elected “leaders,” such as Newt Gingrich) have implored other conservative Republicans to come into the Party as voting members of it; that is, as precinct committemean, I’d certainly appreciate knowing about it. Please let us know if you have that info.
Thank you.

aesthete (Diary) Tuesday, August 11th at 12:56AM EST (link)And Coldwarrior, I agree with you in part: some of these books are meant as more philosophical/persuasive works (Levin’s, for instance), and don’t really require a call to action. Others, however (like Glenn Beck’s), could really use a more effective call to arms, which in my perfect little world, would greatly resemble the post you put up a while back on PCs.
The act of defending any of the cardinal virtues has today all the exhilaration of a vice – G.K. Chesterton
Philosphical/persuasive works to accomplish . . . what, exactly?
ColdWarrior (Diary) Tuesday, August 11th at 1:51AM EST (link)We need to win elections.
To do that, we need a conservative message.
To get that, we need consevative Republican leadership. And conservative candidates in the general elections.
How is that achieved?
From the precinct level on up.
Guess what? If conservatives flock into the Party, and take over the fifty per cent of the available PC slots that are empty, some of leadership will be jettisoned in the next round of leadership elections. Even some of the “conservative” leadership — those who masquerade as conservatives — might be jettisoned. And, apparently, they know that.
If all empty precinct committeeman slots, overnight, were filled by conservatives, conservatives would have a solid, solid majority within the Party.
And, all that “new blood” might toss out the entire leadership.
My feeble mind tells me that’s why you don’t hear anyone in the “leadership” discuss this. Including the “conservative” leaders.
So, I must.

Be a Candidate [I guess he had to say this, but it's all blather -- no specifics]
Here’s Levin’s hard-hitting, specific advice (BTW, at least DeMint included the Constitution at the end of the book — Levin didn’t think it was necessary or helpful, apparently) in his Epilogue, “A Conservative Manifesto”:
He asks, rhetoricially, “So, what can be done?”
Hang onto your seats: “The Conservative must become more engaged in public matters.” Boy, that’s helpful.
“More conservatives than before will need to seek elective and appointed office, fill the ranks of the administrative state, hold teaching positions in public schools and universities, and find positions in Hollywood and the media where they can make a difference infinite ways.”
“Parents and grandparents must take it upon themselves to teach their children and grandchildren to believe in and appreciate the principles of the American civil society and stress the import of preserving and improving the society.”
All well and good — but will any of this impact the 2010 elections? Is any of it a step-by-step cookbook for filling up the empty fifty per cent of the Republican Party precinct committeeman slots with conservatives and CHANGE the Party back to a more conservative Party?
Nah.
Here’s a few ideas:
1. Read and study the Declaration.
2. Read and study the Constitution.
3. Search in Redstate’s search pane on the two words precinct and committeeman and read what you find.
Repeat 1. and 2. every month.
4. Join the Party as a PC and work your tail off in it to recruit more conservatives to do the same. Determine who the conservatives are and then make sure they run for and get elected to the leadership posts at your precinct, district and county levels.
Thank you.

Don't have a problem with his AK policies, but...
Rob_McEwen Tuesday, August 11th at 12:48AM EST (link)Huckabee never had a fiscal conservative vision until recently. Anyone who wants to be taken seriously as a fiscal conservative and calls the “Club for Growth” the “Club for Greed” is an absolute Joke. And I won’t be satisfied until Huckabee comes up with a good explanation for that statement.
The reason the Democrats keep winning is because the Republican Party has abandoned the Reagan formula of (a) limited gov’t.. including lower taxes and less spending–remember, it was the Dems who forced higher spending during the 80s (b) solid and unapologetic social conservative agenda–pro life, vouchers, and *small* gov’t programs which empower people rather than enslave them etc. (c) Strong Defense.
And we’ve been “burned” too many times on pretenders who promise all three during the campaign, but then go the opposite direction on at least one of these. The common thread amongst those who have burned us is the lack of a solid track record on these issues. We trusted what they said, in spite of their record (or lack thereof)
The next election is so important, we can’t afford to get burned again.
Unfortunately, Huckabee has ZERO credentials on the fiscal conservative portion of this 3-legged stool. And I don’t even mind his record in AK. It is not totally inconsistent to need to tax and spend more in a some states which have lower taxes and lower spending and are behind the times. But the problem here is that Huckabee is a “Johnny come lately” with his strong fiscal rhetoric.
Beyond the CfG statement, when Obama spent like a drunken sailor back in Feb, Huckabee came out strong against the bill due to its anti-social-conservative provisions. But could Huckabee bring himself to see that the spending itself was immoral? Would he have supported it if the money was spent Huckabee’s way?
What irks me about Huckabee is that I myself am a strong social conservative as well… literal bible believing… creationist… the whole 9 yards.. and yet, I see Huckabee as a “pretender” in many ways. He’d do well to sit down and watch the entire Focus on the Family “Truth Project” series so that he get reprogrammed into how to be a well-thought-out and informed social conservative. I’d especially like Huckabee to watch the part where Del Tackett (in so many words) basically comes out and calls big gov’t theft and immoral.. using the scriptures as the basis for this.
And I’m with Ann Coulter when she calls Huckabee out on his weird creationist views–where he tries to have it both ways. Funny that Coulter is to the right of Huckabee on creationism–as would be the whole Answers in Genesis crowd. I don’t think Huckabee even knows what the leading Creationists believe, he is so incoherent on the matter–saying what he thinks will please all sides. I’m disappointed that my fellow solical conservatives could be so gullible–must be the same ones who got all excited about Harriet Meyers–that is my only explanation–but a shame there are so many dumb social conservatives out there!
Basically, Huckabee got McCain-of-the-90s kid glove treatment from the press because they want to boost him up as “spoiler”. And he seems to have let it all go to his head. He’ll like act all “hurt puppy” when they turn on him, should he ever get the Republican nomination. But, as before, if/when that happens, droves of Conservatives will stay home as they realize more and more that Huckabee is no more than Bush-on-steroids. Just another big gov’t conservative.
The sad part about Huckabee is that when I talk to my fellow social Conservatives who support him here in the deep South where I live, they don’t really support him for *who* he is… but instead for their ideal of what they want him to be.
Huckabee’s best chance is that the oppposition is so weak. Palen is so much “damaged goods” (even though she still has my vote). Unfortunately, too many Republican primary voters won’t ever vote for a morman (Romney). So the field seems cleared for Huckabee.
But I’m not so sure that the social conservatives will turn such a deaf ear to fiscal issues this time.
I don’t fear Obama. He is digging his own grave. But it will be really sad when Huckabee splits the solical conservative vote in ’12 and allows an all around moderate like McCain to get the nomination–or get the nomination himself.
At that point, we can kiss much of the libertarian and other fiscal conservative votes and support goodbye as we lose again with a fractured 2-legged stool. And Obama goes on to a 2nd term.
I do have a problem with his governance

Umm, ok
Erick Brockway (Diary) Tuesday, August 11th at 1:45AM EST (link)I see the site Huck is spamming actually has what’s posted above word for word.
I promised myself I wouldn’t go there, but I did it anyway.
So I was wrong. Huck didn’t spam us with something from another site.
He spammed us with something from his own site.
I stand corrected.

Gov. Huckabee, please answer these questions
Britcom (Diary) Tuesday, August 11th at 1:36AM EST (link)I think you should take the opportunity to address some the concerns people have about your record as governor of Arkansas and set the record straight about what you did and didn’t do as governor and why. The media, and your former political opponents, have painted a certain picture of you. This would be an excellent forum to address those things and give us all a clearer understanding about what kind of conservative have been are and what your track record is on various conservative issues for the different camps in the party who support those issues. Once that is out of the way, then you will have the attention of the readers here.
Here is a list of issues that you might like to address briefly about your record in Arkansas:
What did you do in Arkansas to:
1. reform health care?
2. promote gun rights?
3. reduce the tax burden?
4. cut government spending?
5. cut government waste?
6. address illegal immigration?
7. address abortion?
8. protect property rights?
9. support the troops?
10. support religious freedom?
11. support freedom of speech?
12. support freedom of the press?
13. address end of life and euthanasia issues?
14. support traditional marriage?
15. promote small business growth?
16. promote energy independence?
17. protect student led prayer in public school?
18. reduce crime?
19. reduce the size of government?
20. reduce the cost of doing business?

Since Governor Huckabee won't be coming by I'll help out.
mbecker908 (Diary) Tuesday, August 11th at 8:57AM EST (link)1. Nothing.
2. I don’t know.
3. Nothing, he raised the state tax burden.
4. Nothing, spending went up faster than cost-of-living + population change.
5. See 4.
6. He worked with the Mexican Government to issue Consular Cards.
7. Rudy had a better record in New York City (Rudy actually has a better record of reducing abortion than any candidate we’ve ever had, including Bush).
8. I don’t know, but since Kelo happened after he left office I don’t think there’s much he could have done.
9. I don’t know.
10, 11 & 12. None of these are essentially “state” issues, but I don’t think he’s got a “bad” track record here.
13. See above, plus it wasn’t really an issue outside of some “right to die” ballot initiatives in places like OR.
14. Never came up in AR at the state level. I’m sure his “state” position would have been fine. Not so much sure about his “federal” position vis-a-vis a constitutional amendment.
15. I don’t know, but I’m guessing not much.
16. See 15.
17. I don’t know.
18. I don’t know.
19. He increased the size and scope of government.
20. I don’t know, but I’m guessing nothing.
Let me try

Hey Mike if your such a cool limited government guy how come you supported a national smoking ban. Also if you believe in the constitution so much why would you have voiced support for a national abortion ban? While I consider myself pro-life, the correct posistion for a true constitutionalist would be to return the issue to the states
You like all other politicians republican and democrat alike are statists.

A constitutionalist...
Britcom (Diary) Tuesday, August 11th at 4:33PM EST (link)Supports the Constitution regardless of what it says. That includes any new amendments that may show up, including any regarding abortion. Since the courts and the congress will not protect life, it may fall to the people to do it through the amendment process. Two kinds of amendments are possible, one that limits the jurisdiction to the State legislatures, and one that declares abortion to be murder, since murder is already a capital crime in all fifty states, the latter would effectively be a national “ban”.

One exception
Lammo (Diary) Tuesday, August 11th at 5:52PM EST (link)In law enforcement circles, a “constitutionalist” refuses to accept the authority of anything but the Constitution which would not be a problem except for the fact that they have a rather warped view of it. This frequenty manifests itself in refusal to obtain a driving license claiming the state has no authority to require one*. They are frequently disruptive of court proceedings and generally a pain in the backside to deal with. The last one I encountered tried to convince me that an 1800s treaty between France and Spain prevents the State of Washington from requiring him to have a driving license.
* I don’t want to start a debate about driving licenses and I will agree that there are many legislative acts that are unconstitutional. My point is that words matter and may not mean the same thing to different groups of people.
Don’t be so open minded that your brains fall out. (John Corapi, The Black Sheep Dog)
Those people you speak of...
Britcom (Diary) Tuesday, August 11th at 7:36PM EST (link)often don’t understand the pretzel that is common, statute, and equity law. This leads to confusion, which I would say is intentional on the part of the lawmakers who are trained in the law. They enslave men by implied consent, entrapment and vagaries of the law.
Driving licenses are not a good example to use with regard to a constitutional amendment about abortion because they are not about law, they are about property rights.
The objectors are right thought. The state has no authority to compel a person to obtain it’s drivers license. But the state can require one in order to drive one of it’s “motor vehicles”. If one does not plan on driving a “motor vehicle” then one is free not to have such a license.
Virtually all automobiles fall under the definition of “motor vehicle” because the state leans on car dealers to send the title (the MSO) to the state instead of giving it to the purchaser, then the state holds the title, not the “owner”. As we know a “Certificate of Title” is not “Title”, proof of ownership (the MSO) is Title. This means the state may make any rule it wishes to make about who may drive IT’S automobile (which it subsequently defines as a “motor vehicle”.
If the state does NOT hold legal or equitable interest in the automobile (property) being used by a person who happens to not have a drivers license, the person should only need to have proof of ownership of the automobile to show any state authority that it lacks jurisdiction over the automobile, and that should be the end of it.
But the state thinks it’s authority is limitless, where it is not. The state can’t pass any law it can think of, it must remain within the bounds of constitution and the US constitution. Public ignorance and apathy allow the state to enforce its will under color of law, but a few people refuse to submit without contest. I would call them fearless heroes doing a service for the public good in attempting to expose what amounts to a long standing state sponsored shakedown racket, I don’t consider that contest disruptive and it’s just too bad if it is an inconvenience for well paid attorneys.
The courts exist to protect the rights of the people, not to protect the power of the state to perpetuate a tyranny over them.

Wasn't really looking for a treatise
Lammo (Diary) Wednesday, August 12th at 12:44AM EST (link)and didn’t read much upthread to know there was anything about abortion here. Briefly, the driving license in my state is required to operate a motor vehicle on the public highways. I can drive all the motor vehicles I want all over my 14 acres without a driving license (and without a registration and license plates for that matter). The only reason for my post was that the word “constitutionalist” struck me as it has a particular meaning in my world and it is not a positive one in the sense I believe you were using the term. OK, so that wasn’t real brief – - what can I say? I’m a lawyer – - sue me!
Don’t be so open minded that your brains fall out. (John Corapi, The Black Sheep Dog)
And what of non-'motor vehicles'
Britcom (Diary) Wednesday, August 12th at 5:01AM EST (link)You said; “the driving license in my state is required to operate a motor vehicle on the public highways.”
But, have you ever thought about automobiles that are NOT “motor vehicles”? These would be automobiles that were purchased directly with cash and the owner obtained the MSO (Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin) as proof of purchase and the state holds no title and therefore has no interest in the ownership of the automobile. Would you say that the owner may not travel the public roads and highways by the use of his automobile which is his property alone? If you say no, then by what authority does the state restrict such a man’s travel upon the publicly owned roadways. Licensure logically requires that the activity be prohibited by law first. When would traveling upon the public roadways have become unlawful for members of the public? And, why would anyone want to seek a license from the state to do something they already have a natural right to do?
Now here is the twist… We all know about the Separation of Church and State, and the First Amendment guaranteeing the freedom of religion and the doctrine that the power to tax is the power to destroy. So with that in mind, what if that owner were a Church? What authority in the United States or a State can compel an unincorporated Church to register with the state and pay a state tax upon it’s property or limit the use of it’s property (the automobile), in this example lets say it’s a church owned van used to pick up parishioners for church?
Have you ever thought on this subject?
