After the first amnesty fiasco McCain said “He heard our voices” and wouldn’t make any moves on immigration reform(amnesty) until all borders were secured etc etc etc. Many of us, myself included, weren’t sure if that was believable given his hiring of Juan Hernandez but given what we were up against in the election many took him at his word. Well the borders aren’t secured, the fences basically non existent and our failed nominee for president
has agreed to work with Obama to cram through so called immigration reform.
If this is true, and I tend to believe it is, then we are in for another battle.
Our country CAN’T and shouldn’t HAVE to pay the costs this reform will heap on us. At this time in our country’s economic situation it would be nothing but a whole bunch more nails in our financial coffin. With all the work we need to do to turn this country around I can’t believe they want to add this divisive and costly issue to the list.
Also, if this is true I personally will do and encourage to do all that can be done to make sure it’s McCain’s last term in the Senate. That may not be possible but I’ll make damn sure he hears about it every chance I can. He’s just another lying kool-aid drinker from Washington who could care less about his word or about that representative portion of our democracy!
I’m sorry but this just pisses me off to no end. I see my kids and grandkids
left with nothing, with the only “Change” being the two dimes and a nickle they’ll have left when the government gets done with them. It’s “Change” alright, Change America into a third world country!

SeriousLaff (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 4:38PM EST (link)The people of Arizona must let him know that he will be challenged in a primary and he will lose if he pulls this immigrant amnesty crap. Now, if reports are correct, he and Lindsey, are going to stick it to us one last time. Campaign finance was bad enough. This will be a fatal blow to all conservatives and Republicans as well.
I am sorry to those who liked him because he was a hero 40 years ago. Now, he has no problem handing the United States of America over to Mexico. Our honorable loser has got to either become a Republican very fast or he has got to be tossed out of the Seante.

I get really, really, really sick of the knee-jerk reaction from the Tancredo crowd around here.
Let me explain to you a few facts:
You guys lost the primary to your arch enemy. You do not control a majority of the party no matter how much you want to think you do.
We are never, ever, going to deport everyone. At some point, most of the illegal immigrants are going to be allowed to stay provided they keep their noses otherwise clean.
People agree with you on border security, and they agree with you on amnesty insofar as they define them. THEY DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU ON EITHER according to how you define them.
Your “victory” over the immigration reform bill in ’07 will ultimately result in more Amnesty and less border security. And in the meantime, we’ve had less security because of it. Thanks a lot.

Grump642 (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 5:46PM EST (link)before you post.1. We do not consider McCain our arch enemy, just a RINO that we do not like very much. And according to the poll( I forget the name) they do every election( question #64) 64% of Americans consider themselves very conservative or somewhat conservative. Sounds like a majority to me.2. Close the borders and take away their ability to get jobs, they will go home on their own. No need to deport anyone. They already started going home because of the economy. 3. What makes you an expert on what people think? 4. Since our fight over the “Comprehensive Immigration Bill”, security at the border has tightened up a lot. Been there and seen it for myself. And ICE finally started conducting some real raids. A lot more needs to be done, but there is movement in the right direction. And finally, I do not know anyone who hates Mexicans. We just don’t like them breaking our laws. PERIOD!

Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

cookcountyconservative (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 7:00PM EST (link)I am sick and tired of these lifetime and career politicians.
A stint as an elected official should bring out only the creme of the crop on both sides of the aisle – people willing to give up a few years of “service” to their country and the people who elected them, with the greatest personal benefit being to possibly pad the resume.
Lifetimes spent in Washington DC only brings out the worst in people and ultimately just leads to self-dealing and corruption. I don’t think what we have now, in many cases, has any resemblance to what the founders had in mind for Congress.
Why my Congressman Dan Lipkinski, (who I actually don’t mind too much as he’s a pro-lifer and a pretty moderate democrat – he’s got a good chunk of a hispanic area too, but I’m not sure where he is at on amnesty) was actually handed down his seat from his father, another lifer in congress! Granted he has been elected and re-elected in his own right, but the fix is in in this district and this practice has become pretty standard fare in state and local government in IL. But this guy should be challenged, if only on the principle that this country is not a monarchy!
The only way I see many of our senators and congressman standing on the princples they were elected on is by afflicting them with term limits.

It is a lose-lose issue for the GOP and I doubt the Dems really even want to pass it. They will probably just not pass it and demagogue us with Hispanic voters again next time.
Reagan, Bush & McCain all understood the following:
Whites are dwindling due to low birth rates. This is a fact, not an opinion.
Blacks will not support the GOP unless we become even more liberal than the Dems on economic issues.
Latinos are the only other large source of votes.
Given these facts, any Republican who cares about the sanctity of life and marriage or the integrity of our courts has to face some political realities here.
Call it pandering or whatever, but I liked the results of the 2004 election much better than 2008.

My in-laws family come from the State of Jalisco and the others family dates from this country from before the Conquistadors arrived on these shores. Most had to go through the process for citizenship legally and DO NOT support tossing citizenship to illegals willy nilly. When you give someone who has broken the law what they want for free there is no respect or pride for that gift. It’s just another branch of the welfare state. That’s not to say they don’t have compassion for those families who have been here for a long time illegally. With this type of immigrant there is no assimilation but instead a socio-economic wall is built between them and becoming American citizens.
Secondly we are never going to make aany progress fixing our party if we can’t or don’t hold our politicians to their word.

johninca Saturday, November 29th at 8:27PM EST (link)Once upon a time, we had a Republican president who signed an amnesty bill. His name? Ronald Reagan.
You don’t have to agree with everything Reagan ever did, but I truly doubt that even he, were he alive today, could escape the fate of being called a RINO, if not secretly a PINKO.
Meanwhile, I see erstwhile pro-choice wonder and nonentity Mitt Romney (what was the immigration status of his landscapers, again?) being pushed as a man who could have saved the Republican ticket. Ridiculous.
Anyway, if the diarist would like to know what form of government we have, he might want to go ahead and read James Madison’s Federalist no. 10. Doing nothing was worse
SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 8:38PM EST (link)Mike
Doing nothing, which is what Republicans who had the Senate, House and Whitehouse at the time managed to do is going to prove to be far worse. With a Donk majority in the House, a close to majority in the Senate and a President who is beholding to a lot of interest groups, what sort of “deal” we are going to get now will be terrible. My crystal ball says legislation will pass and be signed into law that is going to make the Tandcredo Wing of the party’s head spin and green pea soup appear. At this point, I could care less, I just want to see something, anything done about illegal immigration, even if it’s bad law, we on the border states are drowning. We on the border can’t keep waiting.
The President’s bill might have had problems, but for what we are about to receive, I blame Tom Tancredo and his fans for doing nothing other than saying NO.

That amnesty was a huge mistake.
Diogenes314 (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 9:05PM EST (link)Actually illegal immigration was down sharply after ’86 through the Bush I administration. The reason being that the bill in question provided for enforcement efforts against those who employ said individuals. It was after Clinton took over and rewrote the rules to penalize employers who ‘profiled’ their employees as far as citizen/residency status and stopped investigating employers that illegal immigration skyrocketed. Add to that the easy availability of false documents, and you have our situation now.
If you want to build a new Berlin wall on our southern border, that’s cool by me. Irrelevant and meaningless, but if it makes you feel better, go for it. Of course if you’re actually interested in controlling illegal immigration, the focus should be on neutralizing the magnet that draws them here, namely the employers. That and getting medival on those who provide false documentation.

Diogenes314 (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 9:45PM EST (link)They can go home after they finger whoever supplied the false documents. Who should get about a year in prison for each set, consecutively of course. If the illegal doesn’t talk, he does the year then goes home. This isn’t primaily a jobs issue, it’s a national security one. I really don’t care that much about 100 third worlders working for minimum wage, it’s the 2 or 3 wahabbis sneaking in with them I’m concerned about.
Thanks for engaging the issue...
johninca Saturday, November 29th at 9:54PM EST (link)…but let’s talk about realism here. After all, conservatives are supposed to be the cold, hard realists while liberals are naive dreamers– right?
The reality is that this battle is lost. The votes for amnesty are there. Once these immigrants are declared legal, do you want them voting Democrat or Republican?
I’m not even talking about the merits of this issue. I’m suggesting that a losing battle against amnesty helps solidify the recipients of amnesty as Democrats.
Diogenes314 (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 10:19PM EST (link)…and by ‘liberals’ you mean leftists, then yes. But a battle being over doesn’t mean the war is lost. This is an issue that if handled badly could lead to electoral backlash, but if handled properly could be a wedge issue against the Party of Pelosi in 2010.
I am not talking about doing nothing!
Michael Dugas (Diary) Sunday, November 30th at 12:05AM EST (link)What respect is given a parent who tells a child over and over again “NO!” but never follows up with any discipline? How many resolutions did the UN give to Saddam over and over again but never carried through with the penalties? Look how that ended up. There has to be a functioning system in place with a path to entry into this country and citizenship AND there has to be teeth to the penalties for those you don’t follow the law and follow the established path. If not, those who violate our sovereignty will just laugh and make use of the revolving doors that are our borders! And this is much more than an immigration issue, it’s an economic issue and a cultural issue and, maybe even more importantly, a national security issue. And maybe the next people who will be laughing at our laws and our border security will be those who bring a Mumbai home to us.
Our country finds itself in a deep economic problem that has brought financial hardships to millions of American citizens. How is it fair that after our government takes our tax dollars to bail out every Tom, Dick and Harry that we find ourselves having to support millions of illegal immigrants
who have had to work under the table, or with stolen SSS#’s etc. Most not making enough to find themselves in an income bracket where they actually pay taxes
but ending up eligible for various government subsidies like food stamps etc. Even when our country wasn’t in the economic straights that it finds itself in now it was an almost insurmountable drain on a lot of hospitals, schools, prisons and every other form of infrastructure that some amount of our tax dollars finds its way to.
We HAVE to secure our borders, we HAVE to establish a functioning system to determine who is here and who stays and who goes, we HAVE to establish or enforce
laws nationwide that punishes hiring illegals.
This has to be done along with stabilizing our economy and establishing energy independence or we will end up crumbling from within. Drowning with burdens we cannot afford, dangers we cannot defend from and an end we brought on ourselves.
All of these problems took years in the making and will be VERY hard to fix. It will call for decisions and burdens that I am not sure today’s society is willing to endure.
I know a lot of this sounds cold and heartless. We are a country that prides itself on jumping to the aid of others in need, even those who hate us. But who will be there to lend that help
if we allow ourselves to be driven into abject poverty? Or give our sovereignty
over to organizations like the UN? Or, through carelessness, we end up fighting those who hate us on our own soil.
It’s late and I’m rambling, let’s just remember that tens upon tens of thousands
of our citizens have, throughout our country’s history, given their lives so we can have our freedoms, our culture and our homes. Let’s not risk losing those gifts, whose costs can never be tallied in dollars and cents, through laziness and carelessness

They send as much as they can back home, and when they have enough, they go back home and live off what they made here. These are the real problem. mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, November 30th at 4:13PM EST (link)I don’t like the ruling, but I agree with it.
That said, there are administrative ways to make elected service, and staff work, less attractive for long periods. I written about this before, but just like term limits, the elected chattering class won’t let those happen either.
My personal preference is limiting the number of days Congress can be in session unless called into emergency session by the President to consider only legislation on a very narrow and specific issue, like national security. Limit the jerks to 200 days every 2 years and bar Members and their staff from meeting on legislative issues when Congress isn’t in session. It would reduce the damage they could do. And it won’t happen either.
Get real. You've got your head where there's no air.
mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, November 30th at 4:35PM EST (link)First of all, the 47% of the folks who voted for BO in AZ don’t get to vote in the Republican Primary.
Second, there isn’t a Republican in the state who has either the name recognition, the financial wherewithal, the organization or the desire to oppose McCain in a primary.
For example, probably the only guy with a half decent shot would be John Shadegg and I’m guessing he just wants to get the hell out of Washington and enjoy the benefits of actually living in AZ. He’s got reasonable name recognition, though nothing like McCain, but he tried to leave the House last cycle and got talked into running again.
Like it or not – and I don’t, I’ve never voted for McCain at the State level and he was my #4 for POTUS ahead of only Huckabee – McCain is a fixture in AZ politics and he will be a US Senator from AZ as long as he wants to be.
