NOT.
From the Boston Herald.
GOP U.S. Senate candidate Scott Brown has been all but abandoned by the same national Republican committees that pumped hundreds of thousands in campaign cash to former governors Mitt Romney and William Weld during their long-shot bids for U.S. Senate.
The snub has outraged local Republicans who say national conservatives should be jumping at the chance to nab the first open Senate seat in decades despite Brown’s tough odds in the Jan. 19 special election.
“They need to give Scott a level playing field,” said former state GOP chairman Peter Torkildsen. “It’s one of those rare opportunities that a Republican has a good shot in Massachusetts.”
OK, so the NRSC endorses Charlie Crist. And whatshername in CA. But they don’t have the time of day for Scott Brown.
Now I understand that Brown is a mega-longshot for this seat. But this is an off-cycle election. There’s nothing else on the ballot (that I know of). Turnout will be abysmal. There’s every reason to believe that leftists will stay home because they “know” Brown will get slaughtered. If the weather’s bad – a better than even guess – turnout won’t make abysmal.
Massachusetts is a micro market in terms of advertising. Buy in Boston, cover the state. This should be a no-brainer for the NRSC, but once again we are reminded that the people who run the NRSC have no brains.
David Walsh was quick to bounce in here a while back and throw up a counter to an Erick post. Now I’m not Erick (yeah, I’m thankful too), but I would like to see somebody stick a burr under Walsh’s saddle and get a statement about this one.
For a contrast check this out.
Colin Reed, spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said, “I would never say how much we’re going to spend or not spend on a candidate publicly. I wouldn’t detail our battle plans.”
Local operatives say the national GOP and the NRSC have donated voter lists, telephone systems and at least $50,000 to Brown’s effort.
But that support is barely a blip when compared to the intense GOP involvement in the unsuccessful but vigorous Romney and Weld Senate bids.
[snip]
Meanwhile, their Democratic counterparts have swung into action, appointing Sen. John F. Kerry as the chairman of a coordinating committee to funnel national donations to Coakley, the attorney general. The committee has recently attracted top fund-raiser Jon Patsavos, but a Coakley spokesman would not say how much the organizations have helped raise.
The more I see of Republican Leadership – or what passes for leadership – the more convinced I am that the jerks currently holding office in DC like being in the minority.

Will the NRSC ever wake up?
Aaron Gardner (Diary) Tuesday, December 29th at 11:29AM EST (link)Seriously, elections like this one don’t come to often. The NRSC should be trying to capitalize on the voter sentiment that is out there as well as the items you listed. This could be a huge win, if only the leadership believed in actually tying to win seats.
I think it is becoming abundantly clear that the NRSC is now in the business of pushing a certain brand of ideology rather than their actual job of winning seats for Republicans.

At the very least it drastically improves our chances.
I can’t believe the NRSC is only giving Brown $50,000. Am going to call them now.

wennejunk (Diary) Wednesday, December 30th at 7:59PM EST (link)People believe what they want to believe. What your critics do not want to believe is that those who ‘lead’ our may have objectives other than the stated party platform, winning control of Congress or actually leading.
Its like watching your favorite football team make mistakes. You have to assume they are just playing really badly and not throwing the game – or you would stop watching.
You can listen all you want to what they say, but its what they do that counts.
I’ve said it for quite a while now, the GOP leadership is neither interested in holding power nor wielding it. They showed their colors quite clearly prior to losing the majority and have now showed it again during the loss in this health care debacle.
I believe that most do not even personally support the party platform; instead voting for measures that align with it only when they have no chance of winning because it plays well at home.
Personally, they believe in Big Govt., Abortion, and so on, they just can’t say it and stay in office. They despise their constituents as much as the Dems do, but are less honest about it.

Look, Would You Rather Spend Probably Wasted Money Now, or Save It for Next Year?
IJB Tuesday, December 29th at 11:55AM EST (link)I know which side I come down on.
That said, the NRSC should have made a token donation to Brown’s campaign to show they’re not totally tone deaf (which, of course, they are).
But I personally would rather see the NRSC husband its resources for next year (where it could make a big difference between a 3-4 seat gain, and a 6-8 seat gain), rather than spending much cash now on a race that it probably a waste of said cash.
(Note: I am not excusing the NRSC’s interference in local primary races – far from it: it’s why I’d pretty much like to see the NRSC go away. But I’m really not going to hold it against them for staying out of that backwater known as the state of MA…)
Most years, maybe...
acat (Diary) Tuesday, December 29th at 2:35PM EST (link).. but not *THIS* year.
This is a year a Republican actually has a chance. It wasn’t so long ago a certain Republican was governor of Taxachussets, so it’s not a total write-off. The citizenry may support MassSocializedMedcare publically, but privately they know they’re taking it in the wallets – is why there’s so many people moving to the surrounding states, eh?
There’s a real fear of what the Dems are doing in the U.S. Senate that could motivate GOP voters, and I doubt somehow that current governor Patrick and POTUS Obama could motivate the Dem troops …
GOP chairman Steele himself said getting new england republicans elected had to be part of the overall strategery, so his absence is even more unusual.
No, this is one case – especially after the million spent for Scozafava in NY-23 – where throwing some money around would be a Good Thing.

itrytobenice (Diary) Wednesday, December 30th at 2:50PM EST (link)If they would make an effort to support conservative candidates in races like this, where a positive outcome would be phenomenal, they might be able to convince some of us that they’re on our side and we might open up our wallets to them again.
Instead, they pour money into races like Dede Scozzy and prove to us that they are infested with swamp fever and we all have to sort through the races on our own and make individual contributions to individual candidates.
I don’t want to say that they should function as cheerleaders, but encouraging the troops matters. And these guys act a lot more like Ds than Rs when it comes to that. All we hear is how we have to minimize our losses, how the public doesn’t support us, and how we are just going to have to withdraw when the fight is tough because the war is lost. Gah.

To be serious though; this is a regrettable display of short-term thinking and a lack of imagination. Helping Scott Brown may not eventually net us a seat now, but it is not beyond the realm of possibility that it could raise his profile and give them that added boost for a campaign (i.e. House, Governor) later.
How come it has never occurred to anyone in DC that one campaign can lay the foundation for another? That it may take more than one cycle to win a seat?
You're only 100% right Martin.

Winning isn't everything
maddog (Diary) Thursday, December 31st at 7:56AM EST (link)Winning anywhere should be the highest priority, but here are other reasons we need to contest this race. Even f it we don’t end up victorious, we need to show up because there are other benefits.
Message. Candidates aside, this is a chance to spread our message of freedom, lower taxes, less government. For far too long, we leave the left unchallenged in getting out their message. Let’s contest that. We may change a few minds along the way or sway some swing voters even if our candidate doesn’t win this time.
State parties. I can’t count how many time over the course of this year, the special elections, and redstaters comments on how their state parties are basket cases. We need to build our ground game and state parties. They cannot do that if they stay on the side lines. Building up our organization for this race may pay dividends for future races. We cannot let our organizational apparatus stagnate.
Springboards. Sometimes nobody candidates fare better than expected, lose, but end up using that progress to win some other time. Christine Todd Whitman was a nobody against Sen. Bill Bradley (D-NJ)in 1990. Mark Warner was not well known in 1996 when challenging Sen. John Warner (R-VA).Mitt Romney, while a litter better known, but was still dwarfed in name ID to Sen. Ted Kenney (D-MA) in 1994, All came close, lost, but was able to parlay that to future victories. We need to build farm teams. Look at NY. Some poster recently commented that since Giuliani and Pataki are not challenging Gilliland, we may miss an opportunity to pick this seat up because we do not have anybody with a name. How do we get known names? By getting people out there and make a case for him or her. Pataki, by the way, was yet another example of an lesser known, outsider having success in a blue state.
We have to at least try. What’s the point of campaign committee if they do not engage in a campaign?

John Cornyn and the NRSC’s choices have been abysmal as far as direction, communication and planning. I mean their actions are sure putting out a confusing message to the public. Some of their choices, as far as candidates to support, do not reflect well on what they claim to believe in, or the party platform. It also reflects a rather shocking disconnect between Republican Senatorial Leadership and their constituents desires. I am also beginning to believe that that disconnect is not unintentional because they show keen awareness of what the base wants during election cycles and with a microphone jammed in their faces.but their actions speak to a different intent once they achieve election or re-election and hit that D.C. area code.

Darin_H (Diary) Thursday, December 31st at 10:20AM EST (link)While Cornyn’s time at NRSC has been awful, there might be something else here. vamoose Saturday, January 2nd at 9:30PM EST (link)would indeed be a good thing. If Brown can get elected without the NRSC’s help McConnell and Cornyn can’t call in any favors from Brown. While being “independent” could enhance Brown’s ability to get elected, he would also be in a better position once he got to the senate.
It’s time to set up shadow committees to bypass the RNC, NRSC, and NRCC. RedState and other blogs that provide links to contribute to conservatives in important races is a good start.

That’s right. They want to. It’s easier being in the minority. First, you don’t have to lead and second, the likes of Cornyn, McConnell, Boehner and Sessions can keep their precious leadership positions. Some real conservatives would kick that bunch of losers out on their backsides.
