Well gosh. The current scion of the Kennedy clan – as the Boston Glob [sic] noted – “a son of one of the nation’s most prominent Catholic families” – may just have his [fill in appropriate anatomical reference] in a vise with his Bishop.
For you really ignorant non-Catholics (or really ignorant Catholics like the Kennedys) the Bishop is the guy who carries out policy for the Catholic Church. His opinion counts. If you are a lay-person, even if you are a Catholic lay-person (take note Nancy), your opinion doesn’t count. At all.
OK, so this is what Kennedy said.
“I can’t understand for the life of me how the Catholic Church could be against the biggest social justice issue of our time, where the very dignity of the human person is being respected by the fact that we’re caring and giving health care to the human person – that right now we have 50 million people who are uninsured,” Kennedy said.
He added: “You mean to tell me the Catholic Church is going to be denying those people life-saving health care? I thought they were prolife? If the church is prolife, then they ought to be for health care reform, because it’s going to provide health care that are going to keep people alive.”
So Paddy boy you’ve got an opinion AND a big mouth. And just about as well endowed in the “brains” department as your alcoholic, adulterer, killer, traitor (see letter to the Russians), father. You should give Chris Dodd a call. He probably hasn’t had a decent waitress sandwich for months. I’m sure you could fill in for your dad.
Anyway, apparently the Bishop in RI reads the papers. And, unlike Paddy boy, he understands the concept of a top-down hierarchy like the Catholic Church. And he apparently takes his job seriously. Courtesy of Jill Stanek, this is what Most Rev. Thomas Tobin, Bishop of the Diocese of Providence, RI had to say…
Congressman Patrick Kennedy’s statement about the Catholic Church’s position on health care reform is irresponsible and ignorant of the facts. But the Congressman is correct in stating that “he can’t understand.” He got that part right.
As I wrote to Congressman Kennedy and other members of the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation recently, the Bishops of the United States are indeed in favor of comprehensive health care reform and have been for many years. But we are adamantly opposed to health care legislation that threatens the life of unborn children, requires taxpayers to pay for abortion, rations health care, or compromises the conscience of individuals.
Congressman Kennedy continues to be a disappointment to the Catholic Church and to the citizens of the State of Rhode Island. I believe the Congressman owes us an apology for his irresponsible comments. It is my fervent hope and prayer that he will find a way to provide more effective and morally responsible leadership for our state.
Now let me be clear, I’m not a Catholic and never have been. In various places and in various roles I’ve worked with lots of Catholics and even got to know a couple of Bishops. Bishops are pretty “political” fellas. The “office politics” in any church – Catholic or Protestant – would drive a guy like Donald Trump crazy. Let’s just say that you don’t get to be the pastor of a large Protestant church or a Bishop by shooting your mouth off. I don’t recall EVER seeing a “man of the cloth” make a statement like this. ESPECIALLY one that starts like this one.
Oh, and Bishop, one small point. You’ll never, ever get morally responsible actions from a Kennedy. But I understand you job forces to have hope.
WOW.
I find it really interesting that the Bishops seem to be finding some folk with fairly large amounts of testosterone lately who are willing to take on people like politicians who are trying to pass for Catholic. Because that’s all Paddy boy is trying to do, without regard to the opinion of the Boston Glob.[sic] (And yes, I think the people who run the Glob are “sick” too.)
WOW. Life just maybe could be getting interesting.
And just so I’m really clear about my “feelings”,

Good Guy. Bishop. Guy with his head screwed on right.

Kennedy's "Argument" Is Typically Phony
Ausonius (Diary) Sunday, October 25th at 9:14PM EST (link)since nobody in America is really being denied health care.
And unfortunately the Catholic bishops as a group think that nationalized universal health care is just fine..except when it pays for abortion and slouches toward euthanasia.

I don't think the Bishop went far enough.
Uma Richie (Diary) Monday, October 26th at 7:54AM EST (link)The Church has been tolerating pro-abortion politicians for decades because they are in agreement on spending tax dollars on social programs, with a fraction of the money eventually trickling down to the poor.
Now the pro-abortion politicians’ refusal to exclude taxpayer funded abortions from the socialized medicine bill is defeating one of the Church’s social justice goals. What’s the point of keeping these “Catholics” “in the fold” if when push comes to shove they prioritize abortion over healthcare?
I don't either Uma. But then again, I also disagree
mbecker908 (Diary) Monday, October 26th at 8:57AM EST (link)with their fundamental point on “health care reform”.
The bottom line is that the Catholic Church moves VERY slowly. The idea that some Bishops are starting to stand up and publicly criticize politicians, and in some cases deny them communion, I find encouraging. It will be very interesting to see if there is any follow on with this. Somehow, I can’t see Kennedy letting this just go away.
the funny thing is
mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, October 26th at 9:12AM EST (link)there are excellent private social assistance programs that come from Catholic organizations. The crisis pregnancy centers, St. Vincent De Paul societies and Catholic Charities, scholarships to Catholic schools, although not what we think of with social assistance Catholic sisters started many many of these large hospitals and healthcare systems that we have today and many were started before the days of medicare reimbursement. Those are just some I know of so I’m sure there are more. Being a voice for the poor is our duty but I was suprised to know traditionally they are for more gov entitlements.
Mom2, they've probably had to move toward more aid...
penguin2 (Diary) Monday, October 26th at 9:58AM EST (link)from the government after the 60′s. The impact of Vatican ll changed so much of the Catholic Church in this country. Religious and Priests left their Orders in droves, and the vast overall changes in American society decimated the numbers that went into religious life or took Holy Orders. While the church was dependent on their own labor pool to serve the hospitals and schools, the loss of that made them dependent on the secular world.
A big part of that secular world is the government. The “Great Society” and the government welfare programs destroy self reliance and natural bonds. Replacing the connection and bonding of families, communities, churches, and synagogues with the State.
The Catholic Church, while always concerned with Social Justice issues, is a victim of the vicious cycle of government intervention and growing dependency on the state vs themselves.

bk (Diary) Monday, October 26th at 12:00PM EST (link)For decades it seems the “social justice” side of the Church has put abortion as a background issue. This has definitely been changing the past few years, and groups like the Knights of Columbus have been much more open about being pro-life. And bishops have been much more outspoken.
But of course the church is a political animal in many ways. There were a bunch of bishops and a cardinal at Kennedy’s funeral, right? It would be hard to imagine someone less deserving of a Catholic funeral, just like with his burial at Arlington.
Cafeteria Catholic
pirate55 (Diary) Monday, October 26th at 9:56AM EST (link)There is a term for Representative Kennedy and others of his ilk. It is Cafeteria Catholic or those who “pick and choose” what they will deposit their religious faith in. I believe Mr. Kennedy and many of his clan have chosen politics. To claim the Church ignores health care reform is about as accurate as saying Kennedy cares what is done with the peoples’ money. Does anyone want to speculate where our health care system might be without religious support? As for cafeteria Catholics, you made your choice and it is time for you to leave and quit trying to fool us and yourselves. My congratulations to the Bishop. It really is about time.

BlackConservative (Diary) Monday, October 26th at 1:57PM EST (link)The Kennedy’s are scum, from drug addled JFK to Drunk Uncle Teddy to useless drunk schmuck Paddy. Of course I have another opinion about them that is not allowed to be expressed on this website, but more importantly is the fact the Holy Mother Church is finally standing up to the liberals who want to criticize it and do not understand what they are talking about. The Church ought to stand up for all principles, unlike politicians who only do whats convenient.
