Well, the “Values Voters” are at it again. My highllights…
Mike Huckabee was the clear winner of a straw poll of conservative activists Saturday on who should be the 2012 Republican presidential nominee.
Taken at the Values Voter Summit, the poll had the former Arkansas governor winning with more than 28 percent of the vote, more than 16 points higher than his nearest rival, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Activists considered nine candidates for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination in the poll.
[...]
Romney was at the top of a tight pack for the runner-up spot in the straw poll. Following him was Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, then former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and then Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.). All hovered around above or below 12 percentage points of the vote.
Obviously I’ve got a couple of comments. The first, and the only one that really matters, is “Hey you bunch of doofuses! There’s an election in 2010 that happens first!”
The people that organize the “Values Voters Summit” don’t have a clue that the “value” that counts most right now is making major inroads in both the House and the Senate. We don’t have a freaking clue what the real issues will be in 2012, how the hell does it make sense to be talking about candidates. Well, OTOH, if your issues never change I guess it makes no difference.
Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney??????? OK, you’re really fond of a couple of Socialist light losers from the last time around. Thanks for your input.
Pawlenty? Now I’ll be the first to admit – and I wrote a diary on it – that I absolutely love the way he steamrolled the Ds in MN. But what in the world makes him a standout for the VVS? I’m not sure (and I don’t know) if he’s really all that much of a SoCon.
The only thing that’s moderately interesting, and I don’t care about this either, is that SWRHO came in barely ahead of Ron Paul (last). I actually thought she’d take a chunk out of Huck. Of course he showed up and she didn’t. Which raises her up a notch in my estimation.
Finally, a word of un-asked-for advice from me to VVS organizers. Knock off the ’12 crap and go spend your time and money on something that matters like electing Toomey or Mario for starters.

I called it MM because it is. It’s a bunch of totally out of touch people who manage to put together a “convention” and get a thousand or so people to show up and some has been POTUS candidates show up to talk. If you prefer, how about “The Lost Weekend”.
Actually, according to NRO, which I read after I wrote this, the highlight was Tim Pawlenty.
mbecker- I heard today that Huckabee was the "big" winner in the straw man poll
Scope (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 7:49PM EST (link)He was also the winner of the straw man poll in Iowa, and. he won Iowa. Please my good God in heaven, don’t allow this person who believed Willie Horton was cured in prison of his horrendous crimes, rape and murder, because “he found Christanity.” For me he (Huckabee) is another “Compassionate quasi-Conservative. Please no more compassionate conservatives in the White House. From my remembering during the primaries, he also never saw a tax he didn’t like, and. he destroyed the Republican party in Arkansas for a long long time. Am I wrong, or, misguided?
Admittedely, I didn’t see the Values Voters meeting. I somehow don’t think I missed much.

All I know (or care to know) about the VVS
mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 8:08PM EST (link)was in the National Review article that I linked to in my Pawlenty comment.
With respect to Huckabee (and I have zero respect for him), he’s a clone of Huey P Long. I wore myself out on the SOB during the ’08 primaries and it looks like I may have to start working out because it looks like he’ll run again and we’ll get deluged by another round of ‘bots. Your memories of the primary are right on track.
Now then, with respect to Horton. First of all, let me note that I’ve done 20+ years of prison and jail ministry across the country from MA & NH in the east to AZ in the west. I hadn’t heard that Horton had found Christ. I also don’t know exactly what Huckabee said about it, if true. However, here’s what I will say, assuming it is true:
1. Conversion doesn’t “cure” anybody of anything. It makes us theologically right in God’s eyes.
2. If Horton did accept Christ, he is free from sin in the eyes of God.
3. Bad actions resort in consequences. Without regard to where Horton will spend eternity, his earthly crimes call for earthly punishment. I would never release someone from custody ONLY because they say they’ve had a conversion experience.
4. Huckabee has a really lousy track record on pardons in AR.
Oh and to Cap'n Tobias Knocknees myself...

Before he comes in 2nd
kowalski (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 7:47PM EST (link)Before he comes in 2nd or 1st, we have to pass through the Bermuda Triangle of 2010 and, yer’ right — watch the developments in the economy and the rest of the world from now to then.
Now I say this because Romney is an expert at taking credit for being on top of things as much or more than Joe Biden is. He’s a used-car salesman, but he sells Mercedes — not your ordinary guy. As much as I like Jindal I don’t think he’ll ever run for President: he’s running a state that’s so full of snakes and lizards that he’ll never make it to the White House without a fatal bite.
I don’t honestly know who else the Republicans have right now. Romney still has the best campaign expertise and the most money. He’ll win if he runs hard. He’s untouchable right now in terms of unspent momentum. Pawlenty might try to challenge him, but Sarah Palin in my estimation is still a wild card. Right now nobody knows where she’s going. It could be a Romney/Palin ticket.
Hard to predict these things in advance, that’s why it’s soooooo much fun to try.
Unless someone comes out of nowhere, Romney will be the nominee. At least that’s my belief right now. McCain is not going to run again. Huckabee will throw his hat in,

Romney could do a lot of interesting things depending on how the economy goes in the next few years.
Social Conservatives will probably be disappointed by whoever is the eventual nominee.
By 2011, this country is going to be very receptive to the message of someone with strong business sense who can help right the wrongs of the Obama administration. Of course there are also a million other things that could intervene between now and then, so it’s really almost screwball to try to handicap it.
But let’s say the world doesn’t end and the economy just keeps dragging along. Romney is in the catbird seat at that point. He *will* be able to make a better argument.
Of course, Mike Bloomberg might try also. Bloomberg has not completely abandoned his Presidential ambitions, trust me.

mbecker...if Pence or Palin has won the straw poll...
Mr_Ed (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 8:17PM EST (link)…would you have written this diary? Or is it only because Huck’s win afforded you another opportunity to bash him?
Of course this poll is meaningless, except it should help Huckabee (and Pence??) in fundraising. In Huck’s case, it might help him raise some more funds for his PAC, too, which will help some GOP candidates across the country.
My understanding is that VVS has been conducting the presidential straw poll for a number of years. Some years it has more significance than others. Huck’s a natural for this group, just as Romney would naturally win any Club for Growth presidential poll.
My take: let the Values Voters do their thing. I’m sure the entire straw poll took no more than a few minutes within a much larger conference that also dealt with the more immediate issues (such as 2010) facing conservatives.
Take a deep breath and go walk Franz.

I really don’t consider straw polls to be indicative of anything but too much left over straw at any time. This one is just way ahead of itself.
The only thing that is pretty obvious is that, once again, the VVs are clueless about what we’re going to have to do to win.
And then there is Hillary.
kowalski (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 8:18PM EST (link)A relatively significant portion of Hillary Clinton’s highly compartmentalized mind right now is already crunching the numbers about whether or not she should stab her President in the back by running against him in 2012.
I expect a decision from that area of her Very Grey Matter and Limbic System sometime in mid-late 2010.
There is a very very strong potential right now that Hillary will pull a Ted Kennedy vs. Carter on Obama.

The Clintons are not feeling the love from the Obama administration. Obama appointed a large number of ambassadors/lessors to watch over the Sec. of State’s movements. She right now is a nobody, with a heck of alot of people with as much authority as she has. While she is an Alinskite, she sees Obama as ruining the plan, as, he is going too too far, too too fast. She sees the polls, she sees the flaws in the plan, and, she believes only she can get it done better. Unfortunarely now, there are still alot of B.Clinton supporters. She can be a force with the D’s if she runs against Obama. She will run on being Progressive-Lite. The idiots will believe her, and, if the Conservatives don;t wise up, she can overtake him in the Presidency.
How will Hillary "punch out" ?
acat (Diary) Saturday, September 19th at 10:06PM EST (link)Can Hillary mount a primary challenge to Obama – by positioning herself to his right but to the left of Palin, Romney, etc. etc. while still Secretary of State?
My guess is, Hillary will “punch out” (eject! eject!) from her SecState-with-training-wheels post at some point soon – she needs enough time to both establish herself in another post, ideally with executive power (governor of NY?) long enough before the 2012 election starts (i.e. in 2011…) to get some traction.
It could be very interesting globally to have a serving SecState and POTUS going head-to-head in the presidential primary…. does she stick around and force Obama to fire her?
In any case, more popcorn, please!

Clinton will then say she now has "foreign affairs" experience
Scope (Diary) Sunday, September 20th at 9:24AM EST (link)Remember her little story about landing somewhere while being fired upon, which turned out to be a lie? I believe she was trying to qualify her foreign policy creds at that time, which everyone questioned. Now, she has proven that she has no foreign policy creds or experience. It’s funny that Obama gave her the position of Sec. of State, she can now say she has that experience. Obama forgot the rule that you don’t hire what could be your replacement. She won’t make it in her current position for 4 years, as there seems to be too much tension between her and the Illustrious Leader. She will resign for some stupid reason, and then she will run against him on an “I told you so” platform. Remember the PUMAS? They switched their support to Palin after the Clinton defeat. No doubt they will switch back and support her again. The shrill, crying, screaming beeitch will go for it again. They have alot of Chinese money to make it possible. In the meantime Chelsea will run for something, and they will buy her a win. The Clintons will never go away. I heard Chelsea is getting married this fall, and, she will be going for a bunch of little Saul’s.
