THIS is what “Conservatism” looks like in real life.

First of all, just about the last thing I care about right now is 2012. At this point it matters not. We are like Ichabod Crane’s Headless Horseman except we don’t strike fear in anybody’s heart.

Over the last couple of weeks, the very Blue state of Minnesota has faced an interesting problem. They have a Republican Governor, who I don’t know a whole lot about but who was roundly derided as a “moderate” when McCain was looking for a running mate. They also have a Democrat controlled legislature that’s never met a problem they couldn’t solve with more money and a new government program.

The quick background is that the state requires a balanced budget, limits the number of days the legislature can be in session, and has a law that says if the legislature fails to pass a balanced budget the Governor will unilaterally adjust spending to balance it. The Democrats passed a budget that was way out of balance with new spending. With just a couple of days left in the session they cobbled together a big tax increase to pay for it and Governor Pawlenty vetoed it. Republicans in the legislature upheld his veto. The legislative session ended and Pawlenty refuses to call them back into session.

From Powerline,

Gov. Tim Pawlenty today announced plans to cut $300 million from aid to local governments, $236 million from health and human services programs, $100 million from higher education and to defer nearly $1.8 billion in payments to K-12 schools as he made good his promise to unilaterally slash spending to balance the state’s budget.

Pawlenty’s plans would eliminate the $2.7 billion shortfall left after the legislative session that ended last month.

And spending in Minnesota will actually decline in “real” terms, not as a reduction of the increase.

Take note Republican officials who are eying the prize in 2012. THIS is what conservatism looks like.  Pawlenty has layed down a marker.  Anybody else planning on actually refusing to increase their state tax base and reducing spending?

Don't do that.

Obama says he loses sleep over the deficit after record spending.

After record spending and now complaining about it, Obama goes to the doctor and says, “Doc, it hurts when I do that.” Doc replies, “Don’t do that.”

I hope Pawlenty taking some action can inspire others to do the same. He’s my gov and I admit I don’t know much about him, seems pretty moderate, soft spoken. Not sure how he would do handling the national media wolves.

Maybe after 4 yrs of Obama wrecking ball the theme will be “anyone but Obama.” Wishful thinking.

Yeah, that would be my concern also.

Sorry Becker, I'm going to have to disagree with you today.

The_Gadfly (Diary) Wednesday, June 17th at 12:50PM EST (link)

A careful read on that and I have to conclude it’s grandstanding. I will grant you, it looks more like conservative than McCain ever managed, but it’s still grandstanding. The biggest cut is in K-12 funding, and it isn’t cut, it is deferred. Take out that huge slice of the pie and what’s left over are the scraps the church mice eat. He’s barely cut any of the wasteful programs that are there to be cut, focusing instead on the programs taxpayers want funded; and which they therefore tend to grumble but pony up the money for when push comes to shove. It’s how Arnold is working California -hit the taxpayers where it hurts instead of the donks.

But I understand where you’re coming from. If a real Republican stands up and makes real cuts, I don’t know that all the ink in the MSM combined with all the money of George Soros could stop the return to good governance. So I’ll recommend your post anyway.

Hey Gadfly...

mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, June 17th at 11:38PM EST (link)

Sorry so long to reply.

I agree about the 1.8B in deferred spending. But heck, he did cut $600MM in real dollars and in programs that are leftist sacred cows. I’d trade the good folks of MN governors in a heartbeat. Ours (AZ) is trying to raise taxes and is balking at real cuts similar to Pawlenty’s.

You are absolutely right about there being a whole lot more to cut, but at least he cut something and that’s more than any other Governor has done.

Come Presidential Primary time, my question for the candidates would be “Which federal DEPARTMENT would you eliminate at the Cabinet level in your first year in office?”

My thing is this...and my initial reaction was overall positive...

AceInTX (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 12:26PM EST (link)

but I flinched at the cuts/deferral of K through 12 funds…

With all the waste in government to cut…for a Republican to start with education just feeds the stereo types the Dems use to describe us…

For me Pawlenty’s actions in this case are overall positive…but it is a mixed blessing IMHO

I don't disagree...but there are things to be considered

AceInTX (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 12:57PM EST (link)

there are undoubtedly other more wasteful programs that could be cut that doesn’t feed the stereotype and give the Dems Ammo.

By making the overwhelming bulk of the cuts K-12 education he hands the Dems a club.

You know me…I’m the last one to give a crap what the left and MSM think and if the K-12 were the only area to cut I’d say right on…but that’s not the case…My cynicism and susspicion concerning McCain’s favorite governor is playing an effect here too…as someone pointed out up thread…this is a deferral and not an actual cut…and fits well with the Dem strategy for increasing taxes eventually by cutting popular programs that effect every day citizens first as a form of punishment and building support for raising taxes in order to support the programs which were cut.

I agree with you both (Ace/GC)…. The cuts are a good thing …but… Ace’s point is valid about the “Perception over Reality” hammer that Democrats will use in Election Campaign Ads… That, however, is NO REASON to avoid making the cuts.

We do have to balance…. The one hand is “Times are so hard (at least perceived to be) that NOW could be the time to cut, cut, cut, and then cut some more” …. HOWEVER …. If we eliminate so much so fast that we flood the unemployment lines and rates with so many Government workers (yes, I can hardly believe I’m saying this also) that it bites us for being “heartless.”

Frankly, I’d still vote for closer to the former than the later!!!!!

Grandstanding ehh?

mbauer (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 12:01PM EST (link)

Pawlenty, Jindal, Sandford, Palin, Perry, Barbour- all seem to now have this label attached to them.

What current prominent governors, besides our RINOs Crist and Governator, doesn’t the media label as grandstanders? (heh, to think these 2 get away without that title is laughable- by far the most deserving)

And I’d bet, of the 16 R governors I haven’t mentioned, with less national name recognition, the majority of their actions too are just grandstanding, right?

Can we get over this leftist talking point that whenever a Republican governor tries to control spending it is automatically grandstanding? The term is only in the news because of leftwing talking heads. Without them you wouldn’t have used that term just now.

/end rant

I call them like I see them.

The_Gadfly (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 1:49PM EST (link)

When the deferred amount exceeds the real cuts by a factor of 3.5 and you play it up as a significant cut, its grandstanding. And unlike the MSM I’ll call anybody on it. Or, to borrow a phrase from a well known liberal who was once hailed for applying common sense, playing this up as a significant achievement is dumbing conservatism down. Yes, I get that Becker and a lot of other people are ectstatic that someone cut the budget as opposed to merely diminishing the rate of increase. But I still expect better more from real Republicans.

And yes, I’d support any of the folks you listed above. That doesn’t mean I won’t criticize them.

Fair enough

mbauer (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 5:03PM EST (link)

But my honest question is- who is really doing more? Has any governor made any significant reductions in the size of his or her state’s government?

Still, I think he’s solid. As a Blue stater, I’m more sympathetic to those trying to make a good fight in a Blue state, even if the ultimate results are not optimal.

I see good things in Pawlenty and Ryan of WI. I think they have their pulse on the upper midwest. Their thougtfulness and temperment suits that area well.

While others in the field were certainly more “personally” socially conservative than Rudy, my opinion is that he would have governed as or more socially conservative than any of the primary field, Huckabee included. That’s based on the commitments he made to keep all current administrative restrictions on abortion in place, to support DOMA and the group of legal experts he had advising him on judicial appointments.

I like to think that

mbauer (Diary) Friday, June 19th at 12:15PM EST (link)

For Rudy to have gotten me excited he would have had to commit to 2 things (he may have and I missed them)

Jurisprudence in judges, and federalism on all social issues that can be handled by the states. NY gun control laws scare me, but then again, in a blue city in a blue state I can give him the benefit of the doubt.

Rudy actually did finally satisfy me on those issues - more later if desired - nt

He chose a group of very conservative judicial advisors from whom he said he would rely for nominations. They were the gold standard of conservative judges.

As far as social issues, he committed to hold the line on all then current administrative/legal points. There isn’t much more a R can do, given the current environment in DC. And that would be ANY R.

I’d go Rudy over Mitt but would “accept” Mike … but I gotta say, since his Fox program I think he’s lost alot of any potential electability. Dull, dull, dull, dull!!!

I’d went over all that during the Primaries but so many of my fellow Conservatives/Republicans seemed equally hung up on PERSONALITIES and “their first choice or no choice” (we still see some of that now and we are 4 years out of the next Election, people are still STUCK on their one and only Candidate) as Democrats seemed to be. Democrats always overcome any concern they have, they shall always pull that JackAss lever despite their complaints.

There was, and still remains, NO REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, that I wouldn’t have taken in a milli-second over ANY of the Democrat Candidates…. McCain, was LAST in my list though (even below Ron Paul – who has his “good points” but… well…. you know).

Cutting 1.9 billion in education spending sounds pretty awesome!!!

ronnyraygun Thursday, June 18th at 2:01AM EST (link)

Yep ... That's $1.9 billion less available to the Teachers' Unions to kick back into Democratic campaign coffers.

Martin Knight (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 5:42AM EST (link)

I agree; absolutely awesome!

Not cut, deferred

The_Gadfly (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 3:17PM EST (link)

and that’s my biggest problem with getting excited about it. The money is still owed to the schools because it was only deferred. It just won’t be paid out of this budget. Next year they could get twice as much or more to offset not getting it this year.

My secondary problem is that while Becker and I might agree about that part of the budget being worthy of being cut, most of the electorate disagrees with us. Therefore they are more willing to tolerate tax increases to make up the “budget shortfall” than they would be for other wasteful parts of the budget.

One deferral at a time...

jcincy Friday, June 19th at 1:33PM EST (link)

If they live without the money for one year… then it makes easier to say, you didn’t last year, you don’t need it now.

Especially since…

Government funded organizations live on the budgeting principle that I must spend it all or I will face budget cuts next budget cycle. There is NO incentive in the government sector to make voluntary cuts. That’s why Fedzilla is so hard to tame.

Ummm...first things first

civil truth (Diary) Thursday, June 18th at 3:23PM EST (link)

First, you have to have a free election and a legitimate opposition party in 2012 before you can worry about who to choose for the opposition ticket.

Which means you’d better do something in 2010 to slow the Democratic surge before they reach the magic 2/3rds majorities in Congress.

First we'll need to avoid having a Supreme Leader in 2012

GregInFla (Diary) Saturday, June 20th at 12:26AM EST (link)

(like Iran) in USA who can decide who wins without any opposition. Where there is a Supreme Leader, why would anyone expect a democratic election could take place?

Amen civil!!

mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, June 20th at 10:50AM EST (link)

The congressional elections in 2010 and the state houses are one hell of a lot more important than quibbling about ’12 presidential tickets.

Not only do we need to beef up Rs in congress (hopefully with some who have a dose of testosterone), but we need to grab some state houses to deal with the coming reapportionments resulting from the ACORN census.

We need an RNC on a war footing for '10

Achance (Diary) Saturday, June 20th at 12:42PM EST (link)

and they can’t seem to tear themselves away from their golf game or whatever collegial thing they’re doing. Those states with Republican governments and even those with at least one body of their legislature under Republican control have to go to war, of the more or less non-violent sort, with the US over the census and re-apportionment. Comrade Obama is going to have the USDOJ in his pocker and will use ACORN fraud and the Voting Rights Act to reduce Red State representation and to create safe Democrat seats. We have to oppose that by all means possible.

That's one-half of the Democratic strategy to achieve a permanent majority

civil truth (Diary) Saturday, June 20th at 12:57PM EST (link)

The other half, of course, is padding voter registration rolls and stuffing ballot boxes, in the modern incarnation thereof in this electronic age – assuming that they don’t feel emboldened enought to utilize the Iranian model for counting ballots (perhaps a bit less conspicuously, though – or perhaps not).

The pushback to which, as you’ve noted, will be need to be centered on a Republican counterattack at the state level in 2010 – not only legislative and governors for reapportionment, but also electing “well-endowed” attorney generals and secretary of states who are willing to “spend” their “endowments” to protect the election process.

Not sure what we can do about the federal ACORN-mediated hijacking of the census – especially if via new court appointees, the courts abandon past precedent and allow sampling “adjustments” to the census, given a complicit media.

Marshall Law

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Saturday, June 20th at 1:19AM EST (link)

glad I’m not the only one remembers and reminds of it… Too bad the lefty loon bloggers weren’t right in that Bush would find a reason/excuse to declare Marshall Law before the 2006 Election, then CANCEL the Elections, to enshrine permanent Republican Rule (or, for at least as long as they would be able to get away with it)… That was there Pre-Conspiracy Theory anyway….

Despite Right-leaning Bruce Willis’ finding things he liked about the film and deciding to be involved, the film “The Siege” (c) 1998 was a lefty-loon “warning rant” of the “concerns” if Republicans were to have total control of the country. It was a good movie that I do recommend viewing for many aspects that can/do have a positive context.
