Hat tip to Flopping Aces first here and then here.
I’m on my way out the door so this has to be quick, please read both of FA’s blogs.
There was a vigorous debate about TBP’s response to the pirate hostage “crisis”. Some RS contributors felt he did a good job, authorizing military force and getting the “crisis” resolved in six days. My position was “hogwash” it could have been over in a couple of days or less because the restrictive RoE’s kept the SEALs from acting earlier and it was only the courage shown by the on-scene commander who ordered the SEALs to shoot when they did – a questionable order given the RoE’s – that resolved the problem.
I was right. [applause, applause]
From FA’s first cite:
Having spoken to some SEAL pals here in Virginia Beach yesterday and asking why this thing dragged out for 4 days, I got the following:
1. BHO wouldn’t authorize the DEVGRU/NSWC SEAL teams to the scene for 36 hours going against OSC (on scene commander) recommendation.
2. Once they arrived, BHO imposed restrictions on their ROE that they couldn’t do anything unless the hostage’s life was in “imminent” danger
3. The first time the hostage jumped, the SEALS had the raggies all sighted in, but could not fire due to ROE restriction
4. When the navy RIB came under fire as it approached with supplies, no fire was returned due to ROE restrictions. As the raggies were shooting at the RIB, they were exposed and the SEALS had them all dialed in.
5. BHO specifically denied two rescue plans developed by the Bainbridge CPN and SEAL teams.
6. Bainbridge CPN and SEAL team CDR finally decide they have the OpArea and OSC authority to solely determine risk to hostage. 4 hours later, 3 dead raggies
7. BHO immediately claims credit for his “daring and decisive” behaviour. As usual with him, it’s BS.
So per our last email thread, I’m downgrading Oohbaby’s performace to D-. Only reason it’s not an F is that the hostage survived.
TBP is a danger to the nation. God help us, and thank God for military commanders who are willing to put their careers on the line to do the right thing. And damn the people who are giving TBP cover.

You can’t do anything “harsh” because you can’t prove that some other method wouldn’t have worked.
So why was the “imminent” label used to allow the SEALs to waste the pirates? How do we know that some other method wouldn’t have worked? Shouldn’t he go back and charge the SEALs with murder, and also nail the chain of command (except the CinC since he’s infallible of course).

That's a racist term?
NickLevi86 (Diary) Thursday, April 30th at 11:22AM EST (link)News to me. The only reason some of these terms are thought of as racist is because people keep pointing them out as racist.
Pretty soon we won’t even be able to eat oreos(tm) anymore.
Words only mean things because people say thay do. No matter how many times you change the words people use, the people who use them remain the same. Idiot, Moron and Retarded used to be specific scientific terms, dumbed down by vulgar users. Now that people are trying to ban retarded, those who used it will find another word to convey their point and we will continue the leeching of the english vocabulary.
The same applies to racism, where “Negro” is merely the latin base for “black/dark” and “niggardly” has nothing to do with race at all(thankyou Sweden.)

Just one of those things that drives me crazy, too.
Regarding the history of “lawn jockeys”, growing up in the South I saw these little metal statues around a lot, usually with a small lantern to mark a driveway or front walkway. In the 60s and into the 70s, however, many families painted them so that the face was no longer black.

It ain’t just a regional thing, as any idiot from Michigan [of which I qualify] knows that that term is racially charged. It ain’t PC police, its just common knowledge.
I’m with Gamecock on this one.
OTOH, the substance of those links makes Mike’s argument in favor of not blaming the president for the six day delay in the rescue of the captain look like a losing proposition.
At the time, I felt, like Mike that it was counter-productive to go after the Obamessiah for the little things — the captain WAS rescued safely and there was little chance the pirates were ever going to get away — but reading that account, it appears that the president was the problem, not the solution.
The captain was rescued, I thought, so if the Obamessiah wants to take a bow for the rescue — let him.
It appears I was wrong.

So any suggestion that I am afraid of the PC police is quite mistaken.
Lawn jockey is not a close case.
Most here also know that I hate racism more than almost anything. It has greatly defined my life from when my parents integrated little league and cub scouts, my public denunciations of the N word at my church in the 70s, hiring two of the first black paralegals and insisting upon respecting blacks enough in the 21st C to treat them a equals and when they say something stupid, call them out even if the PC police will falsely allege racism.

Seriously, lawn jockeys? Seen them painted white and black and brown growing up in SC……. non starter.
olsmithie, I think your grading system is skewed.
mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, May 2nd at 10:12PM EST (link)“I” think it should be:
CinC… “F”
On Scene Commander… “A++”
SEALs… “Pass”
Now let me be clear, this is an argument about the number of angels on the head of a pin after we get past the CinC grade. I graded the SEALs as I did because IMO their job – and in general the job of all military “shooters” – is a P/F situation. And while the risk to life and limb is very real, the risk to a career is minimal. OTOH, the OSC is guy who really took the “risk” in this instance.
Let’s face it, a group of SEALs v a group of barely armed, untrained pinheads is hardly the stuff of action movies. And the situation realistically posed no tactical or strategic problem, the only real “problem” here was “political” not military and that’s why it took six plus days to sort it out. Were it simply a military situation, it would have been over about 10 minutes after they pulled the SEALs out of the water. And, frankly, if they have Marines on board, it could have been over within a couple of hours of coming on-scene. The only one in the mix who REALLY put his butt on the line was the OSC when he made the determination that the Captain’s life was “in imminent danger”. Had something gone awry – or if CinC just didn’t like him taking the initiative – his career is over. And that remains to be seen.
As far as the howling about the lawn jockeys, I think some folks are being niggardly.
