OK, so it looks like John McCain has a primary opponent for his reelection bid in 2010. According to Ben Smith at Politico, a candidate will be announcing as early as tomorrow that he will run against McCain in the ’10 Republican Primary.
Yay!!! Well, maybe.
First, let me inoculate you. I absolutely, utterly detest the sight, the sound and the thought of John McCain. In any and every role but that of a retired and mute private citizen. I’ve lived in AZ since 1993 and I’ve NEVER voted for McCain in a statewide race, including voting for the really hopeless Democrat who ran against him in 2004. I get ill every time I think about his political career, and I can think of exactly no reasons to say ANYTHING nice about him.
OK, now for the Dusty Springfield reference… Yeah, lord knows I’m “wishin and hopin” he gets his clock cleaned in the primary. Please, please, please lord. I won’t ever [insert appropriate venal sin here] again. I promise. Just let McCain get pounded. Or beaten by one vote… MINE!!!
OK, enough mental masturbation.
Chris Simcox, the founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps is going to run. He has some national recognition and sort of a national base from which to raise funds. And – please follow his link – he’s not a one issue politician, he’s actually got a pretty solid conservative platform. You should also please read all of Ben’s column on Simcox, I’m not going to even borrow his thunder let alone steal it, other than this reference to Sims upcoming announcement…
“John McCain has failed miserably in his duty to secure this nation’s borders and protect the people of Arizona from the escalating violence and lawlessness,” Simcox said. “He has fought real efforts over the years at every turn, opting to hold our nation’s border security hostage to his amnesty schemes. Coupled with his votes for reckless bailout spending and big government solutions to our nation’s problems, John McCain is out of touch with everyday Arizonans. Enough is enough.”
Now then, before I haul out my bucket of cold water, let me say that Mr. Simcox will be recipient of campaign cash from the 908 household, I will put shoe leather on the ground for him and I will vote for him early and often.
Now, “Wishin & Hopin”? Yep. Simcox doesn’t have a prayer. McCain will get upwards of 60% of the vote and win in a walk.
Simcox has some national base because of his stance on the immigration issue. That will help him because he will have the ability – limited ability I would note – to raise funds outside of Arizona. He may – may – even outraise McCain in Arizona. But on a national basis, I would guess that McCain will probably raise $100 for ever $1 Simcox raises. Not to mention that there will be a parade of Washington clubbies who will both endorse him and campaign for him if necessary. And then there’s the media. You can count on outside groups coming in and running hit pieces on Simcox immigration stand and ignoring the fact that he’s far from a one issue candidate. Check his website, please.
The reality of the situation is that the Democrats don’t have a credible candidate to run against McCain in the general. They have exactly no one with any statewide name recognition – unless Janet comes back. McCain will need to spend about $1.25 on media in the general. And yes, that’s one dollar and twenty five cents. Bottom line, he can spend every nickle he can raise running against Simcox in the primary.
Oh, and did I mention that McCain has a campaign organization in Arizona? And Simcox doesn’t. Now, he can work to build one, but keep in mind that he’s never run for office and has no organization or staff that knows anything about anything but immigration.
Oh well. Hope springs eternal. If you’re looking for me next year, I’ll be the guy driving the big 7 series bronzet BMW held together with “Simcox for Senate” stickers.

I’ll be the one on the left.

And Simcox's basic position on immigration would be what?
David123 (Diary) Wednesday, April 22nd at 12:27AM EST (link)That illegal immigration is ….. ILLEGAL?! And all these people from outside Arizona are going to come in and attack Simcox for saying that illegal immigration is illegal? Seems like that’s just going to make Simcox more popular.
McCain might get in the same problem that another blogger reports Chris Dodd is having – most of his support comes from out of state.
I hope Simcox wins.

Simcox "official" position hasn't been put up on his website.
mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, April 22nd at 12:36AM EST (link)And would not want to guess, beyond betting that he will be well to the right of both McCain and Obama.
Outside attacks against Simcox will hurt him not help him. They will reinforce the idea to all of our damned CA transplants that he’s a right wing terrorist. And they’ll but it. Simcox may have a “national” base, but it’s single issue and he’s all but unknown here in AZ, at least for anything but his “hard line” on immigration.
And, AZ ain’t CT.
Oh, and trust me on this one, I hope Simcox wins a whole lot more than you do. Lord, prove me wrong. Please.
McCain forces in AZ aren't as strong as you might think
ColdWarrior (Diary) Wednesday, April 22nd at 2:16AM EST (link)The McCain forces tried to foist Lisa James on the Party — and failed. Randy Pullen got re-elected as AZ chairman. But barely. I’m told by people in a position to know, from multiple sources, that the McCain forces brought in out-of-state money to run someone against the former county GOP chairman in the chairman’s precinct committeeman election so he couldn’t run for reelection as the county chair, as PC status is a pre-requisite to be the county chairman. The McCain forces succeeded in that gambit, but then thier moderate candidate, Jerry Brooks, failed to win against the conservative Rob Haney. And Haney appointed the outgoing chairman as his Executive Director. The ED doesn’t have to be a PC. Sorry, McLame.
I’ve been recruiting precinct committeemen at grassroots gatherings in the Phoenix area. Guess what, I don’t meet any moderates at them. Rather, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, the energized people are “mad as hell” and identify themselves as “Reagan Republicans” or “Reagan Democrats.” If they are old enough to remember Reagan. The too young to remember Reagan tend to be people who “get” that the government gets its money from them or the children’s future earnings through deficit spending, and the current rate of spending, they’ll be paying much higher taxes, as will their children and grandchildren, and the value of their dollars will evaporate when the inflation rate rises, as it must. Primaries bring out the committed voters and, I believe, in the Republican primaries will trend very conservative in 2010.
I, too, will do whatever I can to support the strongest primary candidate challenging McCain (right now, I know of two — Jim Deakin and Chris Simcox; they both are conservative and I’ve seen Chris Simcox debate namby-pamby open border types at legislative hearings; he would destroy McCain in a debate. I will urge Simcox to to challenge McCain to townhall meeting debates like McCain challenged Teleprompter Boy).
Tonight I attended a Arizona Republican Assembly meeting in Mesa to hear former Sheriff Richard Mack, of Graham County, AZ, speak on his efforts to get law enforcement officers, and sheriffs, to read and study the Constitution. Half the people in the crowd were PCs; I pitched the other half at the conclusion of Sheriff Mack’s talk to become PCs, and everyone in this “target rich environment” seemed eager to read the short flyer I handed out explaining how they can become a PC.
As for Simcox’s campaign, I, too, will tilt at the windmills and will not be surprised if I’m wrong about the odds of beating McLame in the primary. At the right time, I will attempt to get Deakin, Simcox and whomever else might announce (J.D. Hayworth? Can we get Larry Elder to move here and run against McLame?) to sit down in a room and try to convince the faders to drop out and endorse the front runner among them.
And I, too, believe one must pick their battles. In this case, I can think of no better whipping boy than McCain to help crystalize for the voters what’s wrong with a lot of the Republican “leaders” in office now. If anything, the primary challenge might get McCain to actually realize some of us believe the Constitution still is the supreme law of the land and that we expect those to take an oath to support it to actually uphold that oath. Maybe he’ll even read it.
Added bonus: if McCain were to lose (we can dream, can’t we?), it might mean Meghan “OJG” (Our Janeane Garafalo) McCain might fade away.
In case anyone’s interested, Sheriff Mack, as he explained tonight, successfully sued the Clinton Administration over the unfunded mandates in the Brady Bill and won in the Supreme Court. Scalia wrote the 5-4 opinion, Printz/Mack v. U.S., 521 U.S. 898 (1997). The opinion is here:
http://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/95-1478.ZO.html
Sheriff Mack quoted from the conclusion of Scalia’s opinion in the intro to one of his earlier books, “From My Cold Dead Fingers: Why America Needs Guns.”
“We held in New York that Congress cannot compel the States to enact or enforce a federal regulatory program. Today we hold that Congress cannot circumvent that prohibition by conscripting the State’s officers directly. The Federal Government may neither issue directives requiring the States to address particular problems, nor command the States’ officers, or those of their political subdivisions, to administer or enforce a federal regulatory program. It matters not whether policymaking is involved, and no case by case weighing of the burdens or benefits is necessary; such commands are fundamentally incompatible with our constitutional system of dual sovereignty. Accordingly, the judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit is reversed.”

Sheriff Mack is trying to get a copy of his latest book, “The County Sheriff: America’s Last Hope,” into the hands of every one of the 3,000 county sheriffs and his book is endorsed on the back cover by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Thank you.

aesthete (Diary) Wednesday, April 22nd at 2:32AM EST (link)I’m going to see if I can volunteer time to help him in his Senate campaign, both financially and through support, but I still think that McCain is going to win.
I’m guessing you live in Phoenix, ’cause down in Tucson, Simcox doesn’t have a prayer. We’ve got the pleasant combination of U of A college students lacking of a proper sense of hygiene and common sense, East Coast + Cali boomers who’ve decided to retire here, and Cali transplants. Oh, yeah, and we have lots of Mexicans enticed by the bag of goodies that the Dems promise them. The only moderately conservative group that we have down here comes from the Raytheon facilities, where a plurality of the engineers vote Republican, some vote Libertarian, and a few vote Democratic. Honestly, AZ’s only hope is Phoenix, and if it weren’t for you guys, we would be drowning in a sea of blue right now. McCain just barely passes muster in Phoenix, but in Tucson, he and Janet are untouchable. If Somcox wins, it’ll be because Phoenix and the rural areas push McCain out, or because of general anti-incumbent sentiment.

Tucson is the "problem" for any conservative who
mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, April 22nd at 9:08AM EST (link)runs against McCain, and ESPECIALLY Simcox. For all the reasons you cite. And unfortunately for us, we don’t have the really pissed off base of folks who will crawl in mass through broken glass to vote for anybody but McCain, like the folks in PA v. Specter. And in PA, Toomey is a tried and tested candidate with great statewide name recognition.
Tucson is the reason why Simcox name recognition in AZ is not really much of a plus.
Excellent points ColdWarrior...
mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, April 22nd at 9:04AM EST (link)And a couple of more points. First, I was happy Simcox decided to run. He’s got some name recognition across the state and that will help him greatly with conservatives, who, BTW, will stay home in droves if McCain is the nominee. With respect to Deakin, who the hell is he? I know, but I also know that you, me and his immediate family are the only people who know him. My dead white cat could give Deakin a real run for his money. Hayworth couldn’t get elected plumbing inspector. In the world people I’m really tired of and really don’t ever want to hear from again, JD’s way up there.
Second, I sure wish Mack was sheriff of Maricopa County. Arpaio sucks. Unless you’re a plaintiff’s lawyer.
Third, maybe we’ll meet sometime at a Simcox rally.
Just to provide equal opportunity,

If Simcox will pledge term limits, he could win.
thegoodfight Wednesday, April 22nd at 8:18AM EST (link)I don’t live in Arizona, but I bet a pledge of self disciplining term limits would resonate with voters. Someone fresh needs to lead the charge to clean up Washington and maybe Simcox is just the person. Have him air out all skeletons in his closet, no matter how seemingly innocuous, because the opposition is going to come after him with both guns blazing. Darn, I wish I lived in Arizona!!!! I’ll do all I can from long distance! Fight the good fight!!!
Term limits? That won't get him three extra votes.
mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, April 22nd at 11:54PM EST (link)Nobody would believe him. We had a bunch of GOP House members who got elected in ’94 who pledged three terms and out. And, as I remember, all reneged. JD Hayworth was the most vocal about term limits and the first to abandon the pledge.
Not all of them reneged..becker...
Aaron Gardner (Diary) Thursday, April 23rd at 12:04AM EST (link)Fred didn’t even serve two full terms….although maybe it was the company he had to keep rather than the pledge that made him go…none the less…he is one.
