Saving Detroit.

With a profound thank you to Iowahawk for documenting the great work the Democrats are doing to save those three million jobs.

There should be some kind of award, like maybe a Pulitzer, for this.  And I can’t believe that the NYT and WaPo have missed it.  Sheesh.

I wish the GOP would stop picking on the Union

TeddyMalone (Diary) Sunday, January 25th at 5:40PM EST (link)

I am a union member.
The GOP is creating enemies in Michigan. Remember the original “Reagan Democrats”? We are the guys who are feeling attacked. They pick on our wages but not the millionaires working on Wall Street. This approach is going to backfire in Michigan. A year ago I would have bet the Reps would be a shoe in for Gov here. With the current rhetoric, a populist Dem will win. (Though the Dems don’t seem to have anyone in the line-up. Republicans have at least 3 candidates with good records and statewide name recognition — the AG Mike Cox, SOS Terri Lynn Land, and Congresswoman Candace Miller (former SOS))
From my house in Macomb County, picking on the union is a stupid strategy.

What has the UAW done to help?

Vegas_Rick (Diary) Sunday, January 25th at 5:45PM EST (link)

Nada.

Your union put you here, not Republicans. Why don’t you lobby your union for realistic, fair wages and compensation? Why don’t you lobby your union to do whatever they can to keep this off the backs of the rest of us?

If you’re a member of the UAW, your fat cat lifestyle has put you and your employer right where you deserve. You guys in Michigan derserve your continued economic decline, until you quit electing Democrats.

R’s can’t do what the state and the unions have already done. Sorry if the idea that the workers at GM are overpaid for the work they do offends any union member, but perceptions are just that. GM, Ford and Chrysler products are vastly over-priced, part of that is due to wages paid, and benefits provided. The business model that the mediocre 3 follow is outdated, most people believe that, except the ones running the companies and union.
Didn’t Gettlefinger say the UAW wouldn’t make further concessions to help them get the bailout? He may have changed his tune somewhat, after coaching from the dems. I suspect, if he did, it’s just to quiet the critics until the automakers get the money.
And to add to what Vegas Rick said below, why doesn’t the union just butt out of elections and be neutral. I can’t believe that every member is enraptured with the idea of spending their dues to prop up dems.
And, as long as the citizens here believe the mantra that the dems will fix what they broke, we’ll continue to get dems who only want to give away what the few workers pay in taxes.
Next up from Lansing, empty the prisons, we can’t afford to lock up the bad people, and besides, they’re really non-violent.

I really don’t give a tinkers dam about the UAW, GM, Ford or Chrysler (especially GM). And I could care less about the political or economic climate in Michigan and ESPECIALLY Detroit. I’m perfectly fine if you jerks have a 50% unemployment rate and your taxes end up being the highest in the nation. I think it would be instructive if you starve to death in the dark.

You’ve sewn it bubba, enjoy the reaping. Oh, and for those of you still living in the People’s Republic of California, take notice. Although somebody might get smart and sell that damned state to Mexico. Or China.

Sell them Michigan and California, becker?

janis (Diary) Sunday, January 25th at 7:18PM EST (link)

If China or Mexico will just TAKE ALL THE RESIDENTS of both states as well, then I’m willing to just give them away. Rid of a lot of illegal immigrants, welfare recipients, union members, a buttload of Dems, all the Hollywood freaks and idiots, and Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco.

Win, win, win, win. And then we get to see how these dumba**es like living somewhere other than the US. For the ones who end up being China’s problem, please don’t give up protesting the government’s actions. Really, please.

Neil will have issues. nt

Hey, WE ARE NOT PICKING ON YOU.

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Sunday, January 25th at 6:39PM EST (link)

You’re the one picking on Rs because you listen to Dems TOO MUCH!!!

Just investigate this:

Most Michigan Unions
>>> ALF-CIO/WFP
>>>> Socialist Agenda
>>>> Third Parties of the Democratic Party

It may be possible that your union has already picked a side a long time ago. And what you are saying now is just based on the meme of your union.

Think Again. It’s not about picking on. It’s more of the principles.

Remember this: If you lose your job in the end (because your industry is on the brink), don’t blame Rs/Cs. Blame the wrong policies of your elected leaders in Michigan… mostly Democrats. Once and for all, WE WILL NEVER ALLOW PEOPLE to use the Republican Party and our principles as an excuse to the problems that you have created to yourselves (by choosing socialist fairness over competitiveness.)

If you are in the automaking industry, please consider tthis: Only the supply side of the industry are to be (being) bailed out by the Government. The question remains whether there are enough buyers of your produce. You might as well as ask the Government to also give the consumers enough money to buy your cars and other automobiles you are manufacturing. One quick look: INFLATION resulting to devaluation of dollar.

Finally, the Republican Party has already paid the price of sticking to its principles since Michigan voters chose Democrats in several elections during the last 4 years. There’s little or nothing more to lose on our part. Many of the conservatives hate “pampering”, the main strategy of Obama in the last election.

What remains to be answered is this: Whether Michigan shall be benefit or lose in the next 2 to 4 years by electing mostly Democrats.

In short, enjoy your Michigan Democrat leaders.

You are a union member?

You forgot to ask the union leadership what to say… how to say it… and when to say it…

In other words… you forgot to say… “May I?”

Aw shucks… now you have to go back to the beginning.

I don’t see how you even know how to breath free air….

You guys are blamingme for what the union does

TeddyMalone (Diary) Sunday, January 25th at 8:20PM EST (link)

The union is in bed with the Dems. But there are a lot of union members — particularly those in the suburbs north of Detroit– who don’t agree with that. We don’t have a say. If you want the job you have to be a union member. They may give money to the Dems, but they can’t make me or my friends vote Dem.

Blaming me for the union is like blaming Bush for Katrina. Neither make any sense.

And I signed up a long time ago, and have been a loyal reader, but I never had the courage to write. Now I see why. I write one comment and you guys all go ballistic on me.

With respect to your comment Teddy,

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, January 25th at 8:34PM EST (link)

if you are conservative union member, you’ve got a real problem. Nobody is blaming “you” for the positions your union has taken and I fully understand that you are generally helpless when it comes to stopping/changing what they do.

I will freely blame the UAW and the devils bargain they’ve made with the Little Three. Your union is part and parcel of the problem that has made the MI economy toxic.

Welcome to Redstate. I hope you post again. Really I do. I even promise to maybe take it easy on you. And as far as your membership is concerned, I always look up people I haven’t seen before, it’s a trollish thing and sometimes I even have to go wake up the Bunny.

Off topic kind of, but it’s my diary so what the heck. Have you ever asked your union to break out their actual bargaining cost v. political action cost and told them you’d only pay the actual cost of bargaining as it relates to your dues? That would be a “Beck” question.

There are always arguments about using dues for political reasons

TeddyMalone (Diary) Sunday, January 25th at 8:55PM EST (link)

But those of us who want the union to stop supporting Dems are in the minority. But there are a lot of us.

I can’t think of the word — patronage maybe. Those who “support” the union bosses will get the favors. They get the cushy high paying jobs. So the union keeps people quiet by buying them off.

Right now, since we are all worried about losing our jobs in March, everyone is pretty pro union — we have it better than the white collor guys — when we get laid off, we collect unemployment plus sub pay which is almost our full pay. White collor guys just get screwed. They have to live on $362/week.

I don’t like the direction the country is heading. I don’t believe in socialist/communist stuff. I’m worried it will be like the 30′s around here. That is going to be scary.

But you shouldn't blame us

itrytobenice (Diary) Monday, January 26th at 5:25PM EST (link)

for our bad attitude toward the unions and their cohorts.

You, yourself, acknowledge that you just shut up and take it because of the cushy jobs and that they have it set up so you won’t suffer if you get laid off. Until the companies you work for go bankrupt that is.

Some of us would call that dancing with the devil, but don’t hold our contempt for the devil against us. We aren’t invested in, protected by, or receiving patronage from them, so you have to understand we are willing to tell them to they suck. If you get caught in the blow by, just step back a little farther and acknowledge that we are right. They suck.
