Or something like that.
You got a $700B bail out through the Congress for the financial folks. So far, what we’ve gotten for our money is a 180 degree turn on what will be done with the cash. And howls from just about everybody who has anything to do with the program that there is no oversight and generally nobody running the program has a clue what’s going on.
So, let’s toss $15B or $20B to the single worst run industry in the United States. The automakers. Make that US based automakers because the furriners who run auto assembly plants in places other than Michigan don’t seem to be having the same problems.
And while we’re at it, let’s not do anything to upset the UAW and force a permanent modification of their agreement with Detroit. Like stopping the “hey, you’re not working but we’ll pay you forever anyway” clause. Or their benefit costs. Or their retiree benefit costs. Or their hourly wage.
Oh, and we won’t put any reins on your exempt hiring and employment practices either. You kinda keep doing what y’all have been doing and will just give you money so you can keep it up.
Mr. President, as in George W. Bush, so far you’ve given us a visionary foreign policy designed to protect American national security and you’ve freed about 50MM people from tyranny in the process. I supported the Bush Doctrine when you first talked about it. Unfortunately, since those heady days you’ve seen fit to not defend any of your actions from the Democrats who have lied and twisted everything you’ve done. Heck, at times you even agreed with them.
Then there’s the NCLB, CFR, MedD, etc. stuff.
And the $700B thingy.
And now this.
Thank God for men like Richard Shelby and Jon Kyl. Hopefully they’ll cob together 39 more Senators who have principles (and yes, I mean it exactly that way) and filibuster this piece of crap you seem to be set on holding hands with the Democrats over. I hope this legislation meets the same noisy but correct fate as the Comprehensive <S>Amnesty</S> Immigration bill that you and John McCain tried to sell last year.
I can’t tell you how much I hope you enjoy your retirement sir. Or how glad I am that you’re retiring.
To those principled Republicans in the House and Senate: oppose this bail out. In any form. If the Dems want it so bad let them pass it next year without a single Republican vote, but now, while you have the opportunity, kill the damn thing.

I still wish him well in life, but he has done much more damage to our party than did his father. In the recent elections, no Republican wanted him around, there is a reason for this. But in the end, no matter how much support and goodwill we showed, he is showing us now he is a socialist, he is a lame duck and is screwing his own party a la Colin Powell. We can’t even blame the Democrats for the leftward surge of America, Bush has givent them the blueprint, he has given them cover to go much further. Could he not have pretended to be a real conservative for another month, so we would at least be able to blame the Dems? If he is trying to build a legacy, he should forget Crawford and move into the Watergate.
I am done with “compassionate conservatism”, as far as I am concerned, that warped ideology can go to hell. We need to bring back Goldwater/Reagan conservatism right now, and if that means making changes in leadership at all levels, then that is what is called for.

I’m afraid next time we’ll get into Palin’s great personality and vote to stick it to the media and not really look at policies and core beliefs and accomplishments. mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, December 20th at 9:21PM EST (link)First of all, I supported, with a clothespin firmly planted on my nose, John McCain. I will not be happy at all when Obama starts naming not just SCOTUS justices, but appellate and lower court judges and they blow through the Senate like grease through a goose.
I’m not one bit happy about our current state of affairs. But I’m also clearheaded enough to understand that if it weren’t for GWB acting like a liberal Democrat when he drafted domestic legislation and refused to veto anything but stem cell research funding, if weren’t for GWB developing and pursuing the correct foreign policies but then refusing to defend them from lies and worse, and if it weren’t for GWB basically mailing in his last four years we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in.
Has President Bush done some good stuff? You bet. His willingness to go to war in both Afghanistan and especially Iraq has kept aQ etal busy for the last five or so years and we’ve not experienced another attack on our soil. He’s given us – reluctantly in one case – two potentially excellent SCOTUS justices.
And then there’s the rest of the story. Which I’ve been through more times than I can count and I’m not getting into specifics with this post. Bottom line, when all is said and done it would appear that his negatives outweigh his positives by a huge amount as he leaves office. I wish him well in his retirement, but the mess he’s left us with from the economy, to opening the door for the federal government to bail out any entity that has mismanaged it’s affairs (state and local governments are next), to the virtual destruction (thankfully not the complete destruction) of the conservative movement in the US, is all on his plate.
George W. Bush has been a pathetic and terrible President, arguably the worst of my lifetime (since Truman). And the parallels with Truman’s place in history I think will not be borne out, rather he will be wrestling with Jimmy Carter for last place.

I was on the Reco-Group of many of the items in the Reco-list… I withdrew recos of many of them, cuz the list was broken for so long and even now it seems stuck… I withdrew cuz I too feel it’s time for some others to filter up (if some pull some reco’s off others might finally filter up)… but hey, that’s just me… not saying anything about the worthiness of the reads, just that they’ve definitely already had the days in the sun!
We don’t want to resemble the Daily-Kooks in anyway… we now return to the regularly scheduled program…
PS: I WILL NOT GIVE THE 3RD BUSH A CHANCE TO DO THIS AGAIN! SHAME WE HAVE TO KEEP VOTING FOR REPUBLICANS JUST BECAUSE THEY WILL BE LESS OBJECTIONABLE THAN DEMOCRATS!

Maybe in 30 or 40 years somebody might be able to crab together a different perspective, but certainly for the next decade or two GWB will be remembered as the guy who tanked the economy, killed what was left of the concept of “free markets”, kept the UAW alive and refused to defend his policies against scurrilous attacks and lies from Democrats and the Media. He is the guy who gave us Barrack Obama.
You are way in the minority in terms of your kool aid inspired attacks in defense of the indefensible.

not for the first time -- and certainly not the last -- you are wrong
David Hinz (Diary) Sunday, December 21st at 12:03PM EST (link)Must be pure coincidence that Toyota just posted its first yearly loss in its history — and decided to postpone building a hybrid auto plant in Mississippi.
ITS THE ECONOMY STUPID! was a slogan in 1992. Its applicable today. Government CAUSED the crisis — which is CREDIT not production.
Americans still want to buy cars — yes even those overpriced Detroit models — but cannot get credit to do so. Hence the loans to free up credit to the auto companies [wasn't the $700 billion supposed to do that?]
I lay it all out here, Why I Support The Automobile Company Bridge Loan — “Will Work For Food”
And by the way, he is still the President of the United States — and whether you agree with him or not “Mr President go spit up a rope” is disgraceful on the front page of RedState.

Dave, thanks for these stats and I think I heard
Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Sunday, December 21st at 12:43PM EST (link)that last year Ford and Toyota both sold 9 million+ cars but that Ford suffered a big loss but Toyota suffered a big gain
but clearly, the credit crunch is what immediately prevented the Big Three from continuing to succeed in the restructuring. They are making better cars and they have made labor concessions.
Its the legacy costs.

Gamecock that's simply hogwash.
mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, December 21st at 1:04PM EST (link)First of all your contention – other places – that the $17B or so that GWB tossed to the UAW is peanuts is total crap. It’s not a puny number and it gets them to a point where they won’t have to deal with anybody who will demand either concessions or a prepackaged Ch11. They just got him to move the goal posts at the exact time when the Republicans in Congress finally found enough spine to stand up and act like conservatives.
I have no real problem with giving GM the cash to be liquid. I have a real problem in giving it to them and getting absolutely nothing in return at a time when we could have made major headway.
As far as you having your little feelings hurt because of the titles of a couple of my diaries (and Martin’s) tough. You’ve managed to morph yourself into a guy who can’t see the face of reality when it comes to damage GWB has done to the country, to the economy and to the Republican Party. Your only song these days is “He’s kept us safe…” and realistically while it’s true we haven’t been attacked since 911 he’s potentially done so much damage to the national security apparatus by refusing to defend his (correct) policies and by not going after people like Tamm that it’s just a matter of time. His record on judicial appoints, other than SCOTUS – and he was forced into one of those – is spotty at best and the rest of his domestic record just sucks.
George W. Bush is probably better than either Gore or Kerry would have been but he’s been one of the least effective Presidents in modern times, unless you consider a 25% increase in the federal budget a good thing.
Get over it.
Thanks for the update Dave.
mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, December 21st at 1:16PM EST (link)Those are new numbers. And, while Toyota posted a loss, they aren’t standing in line with their grubby little hands outstretched.
And sorry you don’t like the title. Tough.
With respect to the issues, like we could have gotten effectively a prepackaged BK with blackletter concessions from the UAW for a whole lot less money (GM really only needed about $3B, Chrysler’s owners have more cash than they know what to do with and Ford doesn’t need anything now) and all GWB’s done is move the goal post into the next administration where we’ll get absolutely nothing.
If you and gc don’t like me taking GWB to task over this – yet another example of his total lack of leadership – take it up with all of the Republican Congressional leadership.
I'm in your corner, mbecker
GregInFla (Diary) Sunday, December 21st at 10:18PM EST (link)for what it’s worth, if we are all yes-men here, then the site will be seen as nothing but a tool of the White House (for another month). The gall of the Dems to say how American carmakers have to make cars that people will buy. GM and Toyota both sold the same number of cars last year, and GM lost a ton while Toyota had a profit. They are making cars people will buy. Now if folks cannot afford to buy the cars, then either the price (and costs) have to come down, or the company needs to restructure to match its marketplace. The bridge loan does neither of these things.
Companies have to get rid of the pension-mentality. Pensions are like the Social Security Ponzi scheme: they postpone costs onto later customers/taxpayers, making assumptions about future investment returns. Go to 401K’s with matching funds. My employer matches the first 6% of my contributions dollar for dollar. These type of agreements attribute the current labor costs to current operations, a truly fair way to run a business.

Well Gamecock....
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 8:29PM EST (link)I have to say I am not ashamed President Bush has destroyed my faith with his bailouts and the fearmongering that he engaged in and yet two weeks passed and all of his chicken little the sky is falling never came to frutition and now his guy is not evening telling conservatives in Congress who asked where and how this money is being spent are telling us the American people to basically go screw ourselves.
WE know that we conservatives hold our politicians to a higher standard than the Democrats and he has let us down domestically time and again…..I know you know the whole list of unconservative bills and attempted bills that he has tried to throw down our throats. Could the title have been more nicer sure but the sentiment is the diary is sound. It is the lay down and shut up and accept whatever Republicans throw at us that has enraged us so!
I applaud his keeping us safe and would never demean his love of country but he is definitely the anti-Reagan and he learned nothing from watching the Reagan Presidency…..he is a compassionate conservative which is a liberal with social programs who happened to be a great Commander in Chief but a liberal none the less when it came to domestic policiy. I am sorry if you are offended but I am not sorry that he is being called out!

Actually, it reminds me of something else
GregInFla (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 9:32PM EST (link)I see the sentiments of the title as what the Bush Administration told We The People this past weekend. We were told that our elected representatives, Congress, are all wrong, and the power has been taken from We The People.
It was the same thing with the CHIPS expansion, SHAMnesty, and the original $700Billion.

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 8:42PM EST (link)that it worked! But you do remember my seven (count them seven! in my archive) columns during the financial crisis that analyzed the whole matter in detail and in which I came out leaning against. I would put up my educated and informed analysis up against all that is below the juvenile title of this blog any day.
But the fact is that we will never know what would have happened had not that $700B bill or something similar passed at the time when bank to bank loans were frozen. I would say that there are some indications it “worked” to some extent, given the recent loan re-fi boom.
In any event, a real crisis was dealt with and this blog’s attempt to refute it is weaker than whatever hurl was spit up by the author whether it was up or down a rope.

I think GC that history will be kind to the President...
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Monday, December 22nd at 9:29PM EST (link)I loved him and fought for him for 7 years because really his spending his first 6 months at the TX WH kind of made him seem uninterested however since that time and really up until his second win he was hardcore on the Democrats but the moment he won that second election he decided the New Tone was the order of the day and in so opened himself to every hateful and disgusting thing that could be said about any human being and he DIDN”T FIGHT……after 3 years of fighting for him I was exhausted and sad at the tack he took and even I who argued with mbecker prior to this final year had more than enough.
I look at him and I see a man I don’t know and I man I looked at with adoration and respect and in a scant 2 years he has finally used up his last little devotion I had for him. It saddens me that I feel this way really it does I wished he had governed as a Conservative and I wished he had fought for his good name BUT he did not!

We have a President Elect that has ABSOLUTELY ZERO experience in ANYTHING. He has the worst of assiociations and he has the word MARXISM all around him and you people have the absolute nerve to disparage Our President George Bush. ARE YOU PEOPLE INSANE???
I’m sure you all think that this ecomomic crisis is Bush’s fault too. Should our economy have skyrocketed after 9/11?? Should we have left Hussein in power??? Should we have let every terrorist run amuck and simply HOPE that nothing bad happened to America in the past 7 years? Let’s see, who here would have prefered to see what would have happened if the Bush administration had NOT made a move back in September to stimulate the economy? What do you think would have happened globally if the United States had NOT taken any measures??
I can NOT be a part of a group of people who I always thought had the RESPECT of both President George Bush and Dick Cheney. Anyone who has the audacity to cast stones like this must think that in their fantastic minds that they knew all the answers much better and maybe you should have been the President for the past 8 years. I am positive that you would have done a much better job.
If President Bush could run for again for a third term, I would be in line right now waiting to cast my ballot for him. And if you don’t agree with me, then you could go “spit up a rope”!!!!
