A hat tip to Mark Krikorian at NRO.
We’ve had some discussion about the willingness of elected Republicans to crumple like a cheap, empty suit at the first sign of a fight with Democrats. A major segment of the elected class of our Party stands for reelection and absolutely nothing else. From the front page today, Charlie Crist is a member of that clan.
Well, surprise surprise. We’ve got some US Senators who belong to the clan as well.
And they’re not wasting any time working to establish their bonafides. From today’s Washington Post, highlights are mine…
The upcoming meeting between President-elect Barack Obama and his onetime rival Sen. John McCain was set in motion during a phone call over the weekend between Obama and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), McCain’s closest friend. In an interview Friday, Graham said that Obama requested the meeting during a 20-minute phone call that the South Carolina senator described as a “pleasant” discussion about how they could work together effectively.
“We just talked about the desire to find something meaningful to work on,” Graham said. “He was very nice to me, said that he considered me a serious, reform-minded senator that he could do business with.”
Lindsey Graham, serious, reform-minded senator. That Obama can do business with. Yep. But that’s not all folks.
PLEASE PAUSE HERE FOR ALCOHOL BREAK…
He [Graham] said the energy package drafted by a bipartisan group of 10 senators, including himself, could easily serve as a model for cooperation with the Obama administration — and something that McCain could help lead on.
Graham said that McCain and Obama are philosophically alike on budget reform, Social Security changes, earmark reform and immigration.
“If the administration wants to move forward with immigration again, I stand ready to do that,” Graham said.
Aides to Obama said the meeting with McCain is likely to be a broad discussion about those issues where the two men agree.
I’m really looking forward to the next six months. It probably won’t take that long to identify the Members of Permanent Government v. Republicans, but I am sure that the distinction will be drawn quickly and obviously.
So, back to the volcano. Hey Lindsey! Hey John! Hey Charlie! We’ve got a new residence for you..

mbauer (Diary) Sunday, November 16th at 5:57PM EST (link)We must be the nicest party in the world. I can’t put my frustration into words. I’ll be taking that suggested alcohol break now. Be back in 2 years.
Welcome to the fast lane to one-party government
civil truth (Diary) Sunday, November 16th at 6:27PM EST (link)Translation of Graham:
We’ll cut deals that will betray our voters when we want favorable press and quietly get rolled over when we can’t make a deal.
So why should anybody bother to vote for such a Republican, since they’re not going to stand up for conservative principles.
If you’re going to get screwed either way, might as pick a Democrat to do the screwing because that way you’ll get paid more in return – the Democrat will be able to get more pork thrown your way.

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

The 2009 Republican Senate will come with a dotted line, marked with the words "FOLD HERE".
Steve Maley (Diary) Sunday, November 16th at 7:22PM EST (link)I can’t get myself worked into a lather whether it’s 57-43 or whatever.
There are a half-dozen who will break their necks to be the first one to “reach across the aisle”.
I’ll predict right now that we will not see a single unbroken filibuster.

I'd be surprised if we even attempt one.

We might filibuster Union Card Check

The Obama Bread Lines
I'm sure Obama intends to reform Social Security.
spainishirish (Diary) Sunday, November 16th at 11:19PM EST (link)Yes, that is why he needs McCain and Graham.
I’m certain Obama intends to take the bad money out of politics. That is why he needs McCain and Graham.
I’m certain Obama wants to attach as many Republican faces as possible to the next amnesty push. That is the real reason he needs McCain and Graham, and they are too witless to understand it. Yet they will act as the dutiful Judas Goats, turn off millions of American voters, and stand by idly as the Democrats fork over money and implement new social programs to ensure newly minted citizens can be counted on to remain left-wing.
I read somewhere else that the great tragedy about this election was that both McCain and Obama couldn’t loose. How about the fact both got nominated in the first place?
It took McCain just a matter of hours to decide to carry Obama’s water. He sat on his hands for weeks as the dirtbags he hired to run his so-called campaign trashed Sarah Palin. Consider that contrast, and it is easy to agree on one point: there is no need to take McCain serious on any level about any subject ever again. There is something deeply wrong with this man, and the love he feels for those who abuse him and the abuse he heaps on those who helped him would require a shrink rather than a political analyst to disentangle. I don’t know which I pity the most, our Republic or our Republican Party, and frankly don’t know if either can be salvaged at this juncture.
Oh, and recommended for the masochism value.

Collaborators with the far left
joe24pack (Diary) Sunday, November 16th at 11:37PM EST (link)should neither be forgotten nor forgiven. Given that the Obama’s party controls both the Presidency and the Congress, it does not need Republican cooperation to do anything. Republicans should hold him and his administration to his unrealistic campaign promises and politically persecute him with his own words and his actions while relentlessly pointing out what the Republican alternative policy would have been. We should be playing the part of the loyal, but effectively powerless opposition to the hilt. Oh yeah, that would require a unified vision based on principles, party discipline, cohesion amongs the members and clear, reasoned, and decisive leadership. If the Republican party already had this, we wouldn’t be planning on how to be the loyal opposition, we would be governing with a clear mandate and enough of the power in government to see our vision through. Yeah I forgot, we’re talking about today’s Republican party.
