Columnist Eric Zorn of the Chicago Tribune might have finally found the ultimate rebuttal for our “Barry -hearts- terrorists” line of attack:
Neither Ayers nor his wife was espousing or practicing terrorist acts in the 1990s when Obama met them. They haven’t committed or advocated violent protest since the early 1970s.
Then again, I have not heard the claim that Ayers is a practicing terrorist; rather, the assertion is that he is an “unrepentant” one.
And, Mr. Zorn, Ayers has advocated violence as recently as 2001:
“I don’t regret setting bombs,” Bill Ayers said. ”I feel we didn’t do enough.”
And:
So, would Mr. Ayers do it all again, he is asked? ”I don’t want to discount the possibility,” he said.
In a story today, the ChiTrib paints Ayers as a nice man reluctant to discuss his murderous past. Has he repented?
Ayers’ office door is decorated with pictures of Mumia Abu-Jamal, Che Guevara and Malcolm X.
A cop killer, a Marxist thug, and a violent black nationalist. From someone with Bill Ayers’s background, this is not just a “Free Mummia” t-shirt, a Che hat, an “X” necklace, or a “Sarah Palin is a [deleted]“ t-shirt. No, those are the things of thoughtless punks, and Ayers has put a lot of mental effort into his terrorism.
I mention Ayers now because John McCain has hinted that he might speak of Ayers at tonight’s debate.
McCain appeared to take the bait yesterday. “I was astonished to hear him [Obama] say that he was surprised I didn’t have the guts to do that [mention Ayers], because the fact is the question didn’t come up in that fashion,” McCain told a St. Louis radio station. “I think he’s probably ensured it will come up this time.”
Both Obama and Joe Biden basically called John McCain a cowardly wimp for not daring to mention Ayers at the last debate. (See the last link, to the Boston Globe.) That can be dangerous.
So Obama will have his canned response ready, and the media will support him by crying, “Foul!” McCain has to take this matter over the heads of the media and to the American people, those who might be concerned about a Presidential candidate allying himself with a proud domestic terrorist. Obama might have been eight-years-old when Ayers set us up the bomb, but he was in his thirties when he chose to consort with the man. One would think an aspiring politician would steer clear of such people and things. I wonder if the little red light went off in Obama’s head. (Then again, if the Rev. Wright’s rhetoric didn’t sound a few alarms for him, he’s got a gap in his cognition.)
Make no mistake, tonight will be an important one. It had also better be a big one, and for all the right reasons. The Obama-Ayers connection that important, so the narrative ought to be engaged.
Obama might have to remember one of Ayers’s own perverse maxims:
“You don’t always have to have an ultimate answer to the toughest questions.”
We’ll see if the student has learned this much of the professor.

No to socialism. I oppose the socialism of the bank buyout. There is daylight between the two of us on fiscal issues and Obama is bad on fiscal issues.”
From where I sit, McCain is a lot more likely to pick up votes by hammering Obama on the second than by hammering him on the first.
There are more votes out there to be tapped on the issue of the economy than on the issue of Ayers, abortion, and ACORN.

You seriously think talking about the economic trouble (in which ACORN has participated) is a better option for Barack, considering his long-term relationship with the group, which is now (as usual) being investigated for serious voter registration and voter fraud?
You think it would be better for Barack to try to defend his fellow democrats (Barney Frank, Chriss Dodd) for their part in creating the mess… and explaining why he thought it would be a great idea to have Frank Raines as an economic advisor to his campaign?
You think it’s better to have Obama explain why he received so much money from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae in 3 years… when it took Chris Dodd almost 2o years to earn slightly more from them?
You think it’s best to have Barack explain why it was John McCain’s phone that rang at 3 AM on the economic crisis rather than his?

Scenario 3
mbauer (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 2:34PM EST (link)I’d like to suggest another scenario. Let’s win by reminding them that this guy is a Liberal in a better suite. Let’s spend half the debate HAMMERING him on abortion/infanticide. McCain should remind the voters that this election could very well result in overturning current abortion legislation. It also could assure that such legislation won’t be looked upon for another generation. There is no better way to create a fluctuation in the polls than this.
We have lost many to the left because they are attracted to Obama’s style, and don’t fully understand / believe all of t he different economic proposals. Remind the people that life is more important than quality of life… and there is no arguing who is on the side of life. NONE
Then, and only then, do you open up ears to segue into an eagerly accepting audience who now wants to know the other character flaws of Obama. This will ultimately damage youth turnout, help convert the Catholic vote, and rally the base.
I know this is a polarizing issue. But at this point, polarizing issues may be the only sure fire way left to open people’s eyes and bring them back home.
Associations more important...
Waderic Wednesday, October 15th at 2:41PM EST (link)I might sounds a little crazy saying it, but I think that the associations issue is more of an issue than the economy for a Presidential campaign.
The economy will be a major issue, but either of the candidates will have advisors around them that will help them out. However, the advisors that the President chooses to surround himself with is his choice and his alone. Barack has a track record of the kinds of advisors he likes to pick.
If you look at the numbers on the CBS/NYT poll that the media is referencing to say that people are sick of the attacks on BO’s character, you’ll find that they surveyed approx. 39% Dems, 32% Independents and 29% Republicans. The more this goes on, the more I think they are so scared that they are trying to influence the McCain campaign by skewing the numbers. Hopefully it won’t work.
Ayers/Acorn are loser issues
shooflyguy68 Wednesday, October 15th at 2:43PM EST (link)They are only of value as part of a larger story and not as a main line of attack. For goodness sakes, the CBS poll shows that voters think McCain is more likely to raise taxes than Obama!
The Dow is down 550 points as I type this. Most Americans don’t give a crap about Ayers or Acorn or Odinga or any of that other stuff. They’ve seen Obama on TV for 2+ years and don’t see him as a wild eyed radical. So, barring photos of Obama building a bomb with Ayers, there is not enough time to convince 50% of the electorate that Obama is a terrorist sympathizer.
McCain needs to focus on the economy. He needs to divorce himself from Bush as much as possible on spending. My preference would be for him to ditch Palin, but that’s not going to happen. The path to a McCain victory is not to make him more appealing to the true believers of the GOP. That gets you 20-25% of the vote. As much as my fellow RedStaters might hate to admit, the path to victory goes right through the mushy middle.
Agreed
Waderic Wednesday, October 15th at 2:53PM EST (link)McCain’s record on the issues of abortion, supreme court justice support and taxes is the one more in touch with what I believe most Americans want.
The most interesting debate so far has been the Saddleback Forum where other issues besides the economy, foreign affairs and healthcare were discussed. McCain won it hands-down, not just due to his direct response, but because people like where he stands on these issues!

Not a Good Day
sturner Wednesday, October 15th at 2:58PM EST (link)While I understand the desire for many here to see him attack Obama on Ayers, it’s just not a smart political move. The DOW just lost 750 points today. Is it really the narrative you want to run with when people are scared to death of their economic future?
McCain wins by showing leadership. I’m sure we all remember President Bush with the bullhorn after 9/11. While it’s not fair to compare the two instances, this is a crisis as well, albeit financially. People have lost 20-40% of their retirement savings, people are losing jobs left and right, and more will come.
John McCain can win by having that bullhorn moment. By assuring people that this will be fixed, that he will fight for it, and that he is the guy you want to go into battle with. That he has the plan, that he is the one who is going to make those crooks pay for what they’ve done to us all. When a crisis hits, we want that leader to step up and tell us he will have our back.
It’s just my humble opinion, so take it for what it’s worth. I just don’t think whining about negative ads and Obama’s past connections are working. Time to find a new narrative, and being that powerful stallworth in the face of uncertainty is what will win over the American voters. Bringing up Ayers on a night when the DOW dropped almost 800 points is just asking for backlash.

Patricia_C (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 3:08PM EST (link)And, if these connections are so meaningless… why are the liberals trying so hard to silence and downplay the issue?
What I find humorous is your statement:
In case you haven’t been paying attention, McCain HAS been focusing on the economy. He has been focused on the coming of this current crisis for two years now, trying to warn the thick-headed democrats in congress (who were profiting from this) who sat back and basically said he was wrong… Nope… nothing wrong… Everything is juuuuust fine…
John McCain stood on the senate floor and warned them.
Barack said he, uhh… “wrote a letter”…
Where IS this letter?
Barack said, “call me if you need me”.
In the meantime, the Treasury Secretary called McCain… not Obama… and the democratic leaders went on television to beg John McCain to come help them because they “didn’t know what to do”.
You want to talk about “eratic”?
How about telling everyone you had a plan when you didn’t. The democrats did that, you know… They lied.
Then they tried to make it look like McCain ruined the (non- existant) plan by showing up.
How about that little pork provision the democrats tried to sneek into the bail-out package… to pump more money into ACORN… (so much for that promise for transparency and to reform that sort of thing, ey?)
I can’t wait to hear Barack explain why he claims he doesn’t NEED ACORN and that his association with ACORN is minimal… while simultaneously, he has been funneling money to them throughout his entire career… and he trained them… and provided them legal representation… and tells them that they will play a part in defining the policies that will govern our country…

izoneguy (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 3:13PM EST (link)…and a few other things.
As McCain said in the last debate….
We can do multiple things at once….
As I have been saying for 6 months….
As we get closer to the election and
if Obama is close then nervous investors
will pull out of the market.
If you look at Obamas economic plan,
not really a plan but a strategy,
his goal is to bleed the wealth out of the
U.S. to create his populice of needy
people who can only be saved by the one.
After 3 months of Obama the populice will
figure out they were shafted and the summer of 09
will be long, hot & dirty. Once people have a summer
of Obama it won’t be love they are thinking of.
And once the Northeast just absolutly explodes in rage
then we can see how Obama uses his community organizing
experience. Obama is a lame duck, already.
Dow will be about 5000 by the time Nov. 4th rolls around.
If you are retired and living off a pension tied into stocks then voting for Obama would like cutting off your oxygen supply. And did you all know that Obama wants to bring back the draft and this time your daughters get to register with the Selective Service.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
Fine, maybe the CBS poll is an outlier,
shooflyguy68 Wednesday, October 15th at 3:16PM EST (link)but 538, Pollster, and RealClearPolitics all have Obama up by 7% +. Those sites all use aggregate polling methodologies and look at the result of multiple polls to determine a trend. I think living in denial about how far McCain is and how difficult it will be for him to win only leads to making more bad decisions about what he actually needs to do if he has any hope of winning. That’s why I think Acorn/Ayers line of attacks are going to make a difference. If the race was close, that might persuade a small percentage of folks to switch their votes to McCain. With a 7 or 8 point deficit, that’s a losing strategy, in my opinion.
ooops...

JSobieski (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 3:20PM EST (link)He should be able to convince swing voters that Obama’s inclination to cut taxes is a flat out lie.
Obama has never tried . . . not even once . . . to actually cut taxes.
If McCain beats this point like drum, he can win.
My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

shooflyguy68 Wednesday, October 15th at 3:25PM EST (link)McCain needs to convince voters who are willing to switch from Obama to vote for him. Again, my point is that time spent trying to convince me or you that McCain is a better choice than Obama is time wasted.
I know that you are the official poll skeptic
shooflyguy68 Wednesday, October 15th at 3:28PM EST (link)And, if the results of the election come close to your predictions, you have a future as a pundit/poll expert. However, the polls, such as they are, show that winning will be a challenge.
Leadership.
builder20 (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 3:33PM EST (link)I think a great line for McCain tonight would be in regards to leadership. “In this time of uncertainty we need a leader in the white house, not someone with an ability to read a tele prompter well. Leadership can be gauged most accurately by the character of an individual, and that character can be clearly seen by the allies and the choices we make. Barack Obama has made various alliances throughout his career with people who believe america is evil and must be changed. That it’s good, and hardworking populace that believe in family values, working hard, and striving for the american dream have too much and should patriotically be taxed more. His choices, clearly demonstrated in his record, have been to spread the wealth around. He voted to increase taxes on people making $42,000 a year. More telling than anything was his stance on the rights of an unborn baby, Barack Obama said it was “above my pay grade” in defining when that baby receives human rights. His character is obvious based upon the alliances and choices he has made paint a clear picture of Obamas leadership abilities. And the job of President of the United States is obviously above his pay grade.”
At least thats how I would do it!
You guys on the left are transparent

I have said and will say again, that the opinion polls this year are simply wrong. They have fiddled with weighting and wording and various pieces of the demographics to create a false impression. You can either believe them or not, but as I have shown in the numbers for weeks now, believing the polls would be naïve at the very least.
But if the polls have been so biased, one may reasonably ask why that is so. I myself have commended groups like Gallup for a very professional job over many years, and even though I strongly disagree with the conclusions published by groups like CBS News, I applaud their open way of reporting at least some of the significant internal data. In fact, it is CBS News which reveals how this bias is operating, and how even well-intentioned pollsters can make major blunders in their assumptions.

No One is Saying "ATTACK" Obama
Patricia_C (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 3:58PM EST (link)… well… No one except the ones who are afraid. To them, ANY mention of ANYthing that dims the radiant light of The One is an “attack”.
Connecting the dots… Obama’s past associations = his socialist agenda = Acorn = not telling us the truth = bad economic ideas…
You are aware that Barack is touting one of Hillary’s economic ideas as his own now… The 90 day moratorium on forclosures… Back when Hillary said it, Barack claimed it would be “disaterous”.
Of course, having been caught (again), Obama claims it wasn’t the moratorium he thought was a bad idea but rather the
Also during the debate, Barack said:
First, what bill was that that he introduced? Or, was he talking again about that elusive “letter” he claims to have written?
Second, you are aware that it was the democrats who created the Community Reinvestment Act, which forced banks to give loans to people who could not afford them… and you are aware that Barack SUEDCitiBank on behalf of ACORN to FORCE them to make bad loans…
Wait… are you sure you think it’s better for Barack if McCain decides to stick to “the economy”?

Obama supporters will try to break our will to campaign through election day. New Republican lurkers will find their way to this site too. If all they read is negativity, they will become discouraged.
Thanks to PaRep’s dissection of the polls, newly motivated McCain supporters still have a reason to get out their wallets and/or get out the vote.

Bill S (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 4:55PM EST (link)That’s the usefulness of the entire Ayers/Rezko/Wright/Bean situation…it gives doubt to Obama’s judgment.
I believe it is a forgone conclusion that Barry will have some sort of indignant, angry response memorized for when it comes up. I’m sure he has a one-liner that will wow the Obamedia and will be sprayed over every rag in the world…and Schieffer will spoon-feed him the opportunity to use it.

Ayers is no terrorist.
WriterGuy Wednesday, October 15th at 4:55PM EST (link)Back when Bill Ayers was supposed to be bombing buildings — by the way, he was acquitted, so he’s NOT a terrorist — he was protesting the Vietnam war.
And the idea that he’s “unrepentent”? They asked if he’d do it all again, and he said he might. That is, if we were in another war like Vietnam, would he protest? You bet he might. So would I. A lot of us who are old enough to remember Vietnam would protest just as loudly today, and some of us did when the Iraq war was conceived. Trust me, if they’d tried to draft kids to go to Iraq, some empty buildings might have been blown up, too.
By the time Obama knew Ayers, the former radical had become a well-respected professor of Education at the University of Illinois. The board that Ayers recruited Obama for was on behalf of the conservative Annenberg Foundation. By screaming “terrorist,” you devalue what Ayers was back then, and the fine and upstanding citizen he has become, by all accounts.
You know who are really unrepentent terrorists? Think G. Gordon Liddy and Oliver Stone, who today each take pride in their illegal acts. Both of which, by the way, are big McCain supporters. For whatever that’s worth.
This is
BlueLandRed (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 5:06PM EST (link)nominally a debate, so McCain doesn’t control the agenda, the moderator Bob Schieffer does. If Schieffer brings up Ayers, well fair game. But if Schieffer asks a question about the market meltdown today and McCain starts talking about Ayers, while it will play well with the base, I don’t think it will be well received by the swing voters. And sadly, those apathetic lunks are the ones that will decide who wins this election.
Blunt is fine
shooflyguy68 Wednesday, October 15th at 5:07PM EST (link)I’ll read Stolen Thunder and take it under consideration. However, if the contention with the polls is that they are more heavily weighted to the Dems, then I’m not sure that is a valid argument. Rassmussen, for example, has shown a steady trend towards people self identifying as Dem and away from Republican. However, it is possible that on a state by state level, the trend is overstated. Again, if these polls are way off, they will have to repair their reputations before the next election and PaRep can crow about his insight.
I happen to think 538 uses a pretty rigorous scientific methodology in putting together their results. However, being a newcomer to polling analysis, they don’t have much of a reputation to protect or defend.
And, for the record PaRep, I am an R, but a disaffected one. I won’t be voting for McCain even though I was one of the few on this board who supported him pre-Iowa when everyone else was on the Fred, Rudy and Mitt bandwaggon. I think his choice of Palin was ridiculous and I’ll be abstaining on the presidential level this year. I’ll be holding my nose and voting for Oberweis for Congress but that’s probably a lost cause too.

Enjoy your stay. I expect it will be brief. And no, blowing up even empty buildings is unacceptable. I would have been right there with you protesting the Vietnam War, but there’s a limit, and violence is well past mine (or any sane person’s).

Ayers set bombs to blow up and kill innocent people ...
Martin Knight (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 5:12PM EST (link)… where you come from that may be all well and dandy (i.e. “protesting“), but where I come from, that’s terrorism.

Ayers is not a terrorist like OJ is not a murderer.
Steve Maley (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 5:18PM EST (link)And Ayers is married to Bernadine Dohrn, who IIRC is a convicted terrorist.
Liddy and North may have broken the law, but theirs were crimes that were not designed to strike terror in the hearts of the populace, which is the defining characteristic of terrorism.

septembergurl (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 5:21PM EST (link)pretty bad, but I’m not sure I’d call it a crime….the one about JFK was a crime, though.
By the way, Ayers was not acquitted. The indictment was dropped on a technicality. “guilty as hell, free as a bird” is the way Ayers himself put it.
He was not a war protester, as you say, but a domestic terrorist. He boasts about the bombs he set. The fact that he has been “rehabilitated” as Obama says in chicago says a lot about Chicago, none of it good.

Politics
sturner Wednesday, October 15th at 6:17PM EST (link)You don’t have to convince me. I’m strictly talking strategy and what the best approach should be.
I think it would be great to attack him on the economy. To bring up bad policies he was behind that helped cause this mess. To take him to task for his ideas that would be bad for the economy.
But I think bringing up Ayers after the DOW dropped over 700 points is insane. He’ll get torn apart in the media and it could be the final nail in his coffin. Sometimes you have to bite your tongue and play politics in elections. The goal is to win in the end. Tonight is not the night to attack him on Ayers, it’s the night to attack him on the economy and let the public know that he is the guy they want to go into battle with while we get out of these tough economic times.
I have to agree with what his brother has been saying. Time for John McCain to drop the canned responses and talking points. Time for him to do what he does best. Look in the camera and give some straight talk to the public. To give them the reassurances that he is the man that is best for the job.

MrSandman, I can't help but wonder
Matthew Morris (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 6:50PM EST (link)about your motives.
Addressing problematic policies and legislation like CRA requires powerful political will and capital. Sometimes it takes a major bubble burst to give you that. If you want to make the point that the American people are too stupid to understand that liberal economic policies and market rigging are bad for everyone sans liberal politicians and activists- well fine- make that point.
But don’t try to make the argument that they don’t care.

Like watching reruns
marfan Wednesday, October 15th at 7:00PM EST (link)This Ayers issue has become a movie that’s be rerun for the 100th time. It’s not a front burner issue any more. In fact it’s not even on the stove and it will not help McCain one bit. The issues McCain needs to hammer away on are foreign policy and the economy, although by now the time left leaves those items a day late and a dollar short.
My motive is to win.
MrSandman (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 7:50PM EST (link)What is yours?
We are on the eve of the largest market drop since 911.
It’s the last debate before the election.
The nation is teetering on the brink of a financial calamity as big as anything since TGD.
Folks have watched their house values go flat…or in some cases…go in the tank.
Now they are watching their 401Ks and IRAs and tuition plans and savings melting before their very eyes…..Days after the DC and WS boys got together and worked out all the details on fixing the problem.
And you want McCain to stand in front of the American people tonight and talk about the CRA.
You don’t work for the NRCC by any chance do you?
