I have to remind you, and myself, that it is only the veep pick. When has any veep pick made a real difference in an election? Of course, when has any election been like this one? The Democrats have made history by nominating an African American, a half-term Senator, to head their ticket, and a blowhard plagiarist at #2; the Republicans have countered with a Navy pilot/P.O.W. and maverick at top complimented by a first-term governor from Alaska, a small government conservative who is the first woman on a major party Presidential ticket with a serious chance to win the election.
Listening to Governor Palin speak this morning, I came away with the impression that she clings to her God and to her guns, but evaporates Obama’s untrustworthy observation of bitterness. To many of us, she is one of us. She seems to be the kind of person whom Axelrod figured would be attracted to Obama with the addition of Joe “From Scranton, Darnit” Biden.
I know it is early, but I’ve observed people who said they were supporting McCain over Obama of a sudden enthusiastically supporting the Republican ticket. Is this the product of instant excitement, doomed to fade? Perhaps.
My measure — and many of you will understand this — is my wife. She is fired up. Last night, she asked me about Palin and I told her that I liked Palin, but she wouldn’t be the choice. For me, trying to read the thoughts of a Presidential campaign, it was mostly geography. Alaska? And inexperience. My wife was disappointed, but I told her that we’d never know for sure who it was until the name emerged from John McCain’s lips.
Sarah Palin can handle Joe Biden, which might actually matter given the media hype concerning McCain’s age. An interesting note is that Biden’s top debating skill is his condescension. He won’t be able to get away with that here.
Like I wrote last evening, I was prepared to accept Joe Lieberman as my party’s Vice Presidential nominee. He was a solid, workaday pick who made sense in several ways. Then I was prepared to support Pawlenty after that pick became rumored. What I saw today, however, changed the game.
Sarah Palin’s selection is a game changer.

MikeknaJ Friday, August 29th at 2:05PM EST (link)This was a brillian move by John McCain. No one else he could’ve selected would’ve created this kind of instant buzz and throw Obama’s speech off the front pages in such a startling fashion.
I love this pick. But not because of the above reasons.
I love it because Palin is a true conservative. She’s no-nonsense. She’s a reformer. She’s anti-corruption. She’s strong on the energy issue. She’s down to earth. She has a great personal story. She’s real.
Boldest move of McCain’s career. And I’m applauding him for it all the way.

Too funny!
Kepps Friday, August 29th at 2:09PM EST (link)Well once again McBush has demonstrated his lack of anything resembling good judgment by picking the lightweight former beauty queen. What is it with McBush? Why its another demonstration of his early onset Alzheimer’s! It looks like McBush is ready to replace “Miss Buffalo Chip” with the much younger “Miss Moose Chip”. Just like he dumped the first wife after she was badly injured in a car wreck. Cindyliscious better keep an eye on her. It can’t be because he seriously thinks this woman is ready to be president when his sorry old carcass has a heart attack or Stroke or another bout of cancer within a year or two. That is if the Alzheimer’s doesn’t turn him into a complete babbling idiot. He’s only partway there—- so far. Oh and her credentials? I’m sure her experience as Mayor of a town of 9,000 people will serve America well when we need to settle disputes about what states get their streets paved first! That is if she doesn’t get indicted first for the illegal firing of her brother-in-law, a state cop who is divorcing her sister! So there we go, strong on the family values too!
Game is changed
SteveLA (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 2:10PM EST (link)There would I think should be 0 questions from the social conservative wing of the party now about McCain and the support from that wing should now be pretty strong.
Governor Palin on the number one social conservative issue, abortion, answered the question with her own life story. Is there anyone more Pro-Life than a woman who choose to have a Downs syndrome child….I somehow think not.
The game is indeed changed.

As far as experience goes, I really don’t think that the Obama campaign really wants to go there. If they want experience to be the deciding factor, BHO may be similar to Palin, but not even close to McCain. Regardless, I’ll take a 1st term Governor over a 1st term Senator anyday.

I have started to see the argument that Alaska is a low populated state which would invalidate her experience. Well, yes, it is ranked at 47th (Delaware is 45th) and a much nicer place to visit. But it is a US state no less. If population or GDP was a sol qualifier for electability then Bill Clinton from Arkansas would never have bested GHW Bush. And Guliani would be the GOP nominee.
Gov Palin used great experience quote this morning “As the commander of the Alaska National Guard”!! This alone will be able to quell much of that weak experience argument.

A Great Surprise Choice!
ConservativeYouth Friday, August 29th at 2:45PM EST (link)When I first heard that Sarah Palin is John McCain’s running mate, I was surprised because I had never heard of her. I was expecting Mitt Romney or someone else well known, but then as I got to learn more about her I knew that John McCain has made a great choice and I am so excited! If only I was old enough to vote!
Yes, it is
johnCV (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 2:46PM EST (link)My wife also is excited about this selection. She’s very non-political and it really caught her imagination.
I have not been a Mccain supporter, and have been vacilating between voting for him or Barr based on my disappointment with Mccain’s policies. The fear of a BHO presidency was at the root of my selection.
The choice of Palin completely changes this election for me. The #2 spot is the launching spot for the next election. Had Mccain chosen Lieberman for example, where would that leave the R’s in 2012/16? No heir apparent, and in disarray.
The choice of Palin – a real conservative – gives us hope for future elections where there really was none. Not only that, but it gives a very capable conservative a platform to keep conservative viewpoits front and center in the political discussion. That would not have been possible with some squishy R. She is a rally point for conservatives.
I have also been pleasantly surprised that Mccain has really been taking it to BHO in the ads – he’s using a pretty sharp stick to poke the One.
I’m at that point where I will now get off the fence and actually commit to say “I’m voting for Mccain” and will send a donation.
Perhaps there are others out there with the same feelings. It’s good to vote for something!
Things are looking up.
A couple of ways
Rusty_S (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 2:48PM EST (link)Granted, the media will ignore that Palin is more experienced than Obama, and try to attack her on that. That’s all they’ve got.
But, I’d say there are still a couple of ways McCain can attack Obama on experience.
Number one, “I’m not the one that had to have a VP with experience.”
Number two, “You want to talk about experience, Senator Obama? Let’s talk about experience.”
Sharper minds may come up with more.
Just AWESOME!

spainishirish (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 2:55PM EST (link)This points out how unqualified both Obama and Biden are, and the latter stands heads and shoulders above the former (which didn’t take much). Neither Obama nor Biden have ever run anything more than their mouths, they have zero executive experience, and both are hopelessly empty suits. They have never reformed anything. Heck, Obama even helped advance corruption while in Chicago as he prostituted himself to terrorists and mobsters.
The Dems hoped Palin would have a deer-in-the-headlights moment like Quayle at the announcement. As it is, she was much more articulate, attractive, and persuasive than Biden, and as everyone else on this planet, more authentic than Obama.
Good job, Team McCain.
Well
njson Friday, August 29th at 2:55PM EST (link)Obama’s in Clinton’s pocket more than ever now. She is the only person who can stop her supporters from going for Palin.
Talk about a shrewd pick from that perspective. Clinton wants to run in 2012, and now all she has to do is shut up and not step in the way of a viable female VP pick to give her the chance to do just that.
Barry is right...
Soothsayer Friday, August 29th at 2:55PM EST (link)Gov. Palin doesn’t have experience. She doesn’t have experience attending a church for 20 years where she listened to anti-American, racist harangues. She doesn’t have experience working with ex-domestic terrorists like Bill Ayres. She doesn’t have experience working with convicted felons like Rezko.
That’s the kind of experience Obama has.
Definitely a game changer
olderthangandalf Friday, August 29th at 2:56PM EST (link)There’s no doubt that this pick changes the game.
It takes some issues off the table. It moves other issues to the forefront.
We won’t be talking as much about experience. On the flip side, if you want someone who makes real change happen, the Republican ticket looks a lot stronger now. It’s hard to explain why, but a ticket with Sarah Palin on it doesn’t look so much like the continuation of the Bush years.
It all depends on how she holds up to the pressure and the examination. She has many learning curves to move up (being in a national campaign, dealing with the national media, learning all those branches of the federal government that don’t dominate Alaska, learning foreign policy) and she’s got to move up all of them, right now.
If she does, and if she looks ready for prime time by the VP debates, her experience quits being such an issue.
Never forget – Americans love obscurity to power stories just as much as we love rags to riches stories. If she pulls it off, it’s a huge feel good.

Palin for VP
James_from_Virginia Friday, August 29th at 3:04PM EST (link)I’m pretty sure that Palin is not running for the office of President. When she does run, she will have 8 solid years of VP experience, which by far outweighs 2 short years of Senatorial experience on which BO now is running. Dems keep arguing oranges when we’re talking apples – she’s not running for POTUS so just get over it. I’d also suggest that if Biden isn’t a little bit worried about how he’s going to look when he’s debating her, his naivete will be his doom.
I liked the fact that she started at the podium with obvious nervousness, then became at ease and commanded that hall. I give that far higher marks than BO’s canned speech last night. That circus last night was nothing short of a celebrity pop concert, with ridiculous music and a lot of snakeoil sales talk but lack of substance overall. Watching the constituents in the crowd was like watching a video recap of the Summer of Love, all of them grooving and swaying with the music, inhaling and saying Right On, Let’s Ride the Love Train to the White House. It also was eerily reminscent of Jim Jones and David Koresh – Please, folks, have a cup of Kool Aid on your way out, if you’re feeling tired just lay down – (cue Pink Floyd in background, There is no pain, you are receding, A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon – Do not fear; I’ll bring you Home.
Contrast that with the much more refined music and dignity with which today’s gathering in Ohio was conducted (I’ll grant you the cheerleaders throwing out tshirts at the opening was way out of line). No cumbaya, no HOPE for unspecified CHANGE. Just the facts and issues. Clear, forthright, convincing.
Also, BO, please note that team members kiss each other on the cheek, NOT on the lips. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bdl-wXB9do
I do not believe that the relative lack of experience of a VP candidate detracts from the otherwise extensive experience of the candidate who actually is running for the office of POTUS. Do not overlook the fact, too, that Palin’s the only one of the entire lot with Executive Power experience. Granted, it’s not POTUS power, but it’s still an experience of being fully accountable for an administration and decisions made, so I’d think that’s a pretty sobering maturation process. I’ll also take the combined military experience of the POTUS candidate plus the two active soldier sons of putting issues of defense and the military into perspective for the Commander in Chief and his Veep.
On the flipside, I don’t believe a totally inexperienced Presidential candidate can bootstrap the extensive Washington experience of his Veep into his own. I applaud BO on the fact that he’s changed several of his positions on the economy and energy to positions I support, rather than remaining wedded to really bad positions. My concern, though, is that the number of positions on which he has changed positions highlights the fact that it is his inexperience that contributes to the initial bad position.
So, I say to BO, spend a few more terms in office, get a feel for how things work, then come back and talk to us in 16 years when Palin is wrapping up her second term.
Another common fallacy in the liberal arsenal is that the Dems seem to think that they’re running this election against Bush. Helloo? This is McCain – the Republican Senator LEAST like Bush. If you think you can identify one who is further from Bush’s policies and programs, I’d be happy to hear that name. And don’t give me the voting record – that’s just an ignorant disregard for the Senatorial voting process. So, thanks to the Dems, McCain too can campaign on the same platform – we don’t want more of the same.
Bringing a young, intelligent, fiscally conservative female candidate to the ticket is an excellent choice.

I’m struck about the seeming affirmative action quality of it where someone is picked for physical characteristics or historical grievances over qualifications for the job.

It seems to be suicide to drop our best weapon. McCain is unilaterally disarming from the experience debate. The Commander-In-Chief threshold was his thin red line.
She doesn’t even help in a particular state of interest.
I can’t for the life of me figure it out. Mitt Romney could’ve held his own with Biden while providing executive experience and economic know-how while McCain pounded Obama on his lack of experience.

————————————————————-
I am a Positivist Pastafarian for the alliteration alone.
There are other reasons
olderthangandalf Friday, August 29th at 3:19PM EST (link)There are a lot of reasons to pick her.
She helps solidify the conservative base. She may help inspire the right to life activists enough so that they do get out the vote stuff on election day. She appeals to some – not all, but some – of the women who supported Hillary. She helps posture the Republican ticket as a reform, change ticket. She is supposed to be a very effective campaigner.
People were all for a Bobby Jindal pick. Well, she’s a lot like picking Bobby Jindal. She’s relatively young and new to the big leagues, but what she offers in terms of character and substance is exactly what McCain needed.
Also remember: there was no really safe pick. Romney had issues (too many houses, exporting jobs, personal dislike between him and McCain, the unknown factor of how his religion would play in a general election), Pawlenty had issues (also inexperienced, not so charismatic), and so on. So long as the pick is bound to be risky, why not take on a risk that promises a big potential upside?

The excitement wont fade so long as Palin keeps her strong conservative views and articulates the right themes.

I don't care if the VP is a tranny. Have qualifications.
Staunch_Libertarian (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 3:25PM EST (link)There is no reason for Obama to be the nominee of a major party. He has no experience. That view has consequences though. It means we have to also apply that to potential Republican candidates.
Mitt Romney ran his own business and was a successful governor with a history of rescuing businesses and an Olympics. He is very much more qualified than Gov.Palin and that has nothing to do with her being a woman.
This is absurd. These are Democratic arguments. We reward work and merit in the Republican Party. Where is her merit? When did she earn it?

Vegas_Rick (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 3:25PM EST (link)Do you know about her accomplishments in local and state government? Staunch_Libertarian (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 3:29PM EST (link)Not just on experience…what about affirmative action? We are the party that says quotas are wrong and that picking someone for their gender or race for historical slights is reverse discrimination today.
Now…Gov.Palin may be a fine leader and woman, but that isn’t the qualification for being president. Barack Obama might be a nice guy, but I don’t think he should be president.
I’ve always opposed affirmative action and job/academic selections based on anything other than merit and I see this as a choice that skews towards that.

Similar but still better and with time to learn the job
Raven (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 3:30PM EST (link)The choice of VP is actually less about qualifications and more about appropriateness.
Romney is qualified, but inappropriate. Pawlenty I feel was a better choice than Palin (as with Cantor), but apparently, Palin seemed more appropriate than either to the McCain campaign. And since it’s McCain and not Raven running for President right now, it’s his choice.
President is about qualified. Vice President is about appropriate.

Staunch_Libertarian (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 3:33PM EST (link)But Mitt Romney certainly wouldn’t have been stuttering and stammering against the blowhard Biden.
Besides, Romney has much more experience and fills the economic credentials that McCain lacks. It was a great way to secure the west and Michigan as well.
Palin will capture no states we won’t already carry and deflates the best argument against Obama which is his lack of experience in government.
Now we have to unilaterally disarm that argument and thus McCain’s one overwhelming advantage (experience) is destroyed by himself.

And if you think commercial fishing is an easy thing to succeed in in Alaska you should really give it a try. Lots of money there. If you’re successful.

Game Changer? Oh yes...
Jack (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 3:45PM EST (link)My daughter was always asking me for years where were the conservative women who could be role models for her and her friends.
I grew very tired pointing out Margaret Thatcher.
Today she sent in a check to John McCain’s campaign. It is the first financial donation she has ever made to a political campaign.
Is Sarah Palin a game changer? You had better believe it.

I would wait to see how McCain works that angle
Raven (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 3:48PM EST (link)Before saying that the argument no longer works.
Hell, I’d think about my own reaction to Obama’s attempts to work that angle. Let’s see…
The first thing I heard from Obama’s campaign about Palin:
“Do we really want a 72 yr old backstopped by a 44 year old with so little experience?”
My immediate reaction was:
“Do we really want a 47 year old with absolutely no experience backstopped by a 68 year old who Also has absolutely no experience?”
“If you do not have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.”

Me, too
KeyWestConservative (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 3:55PM EST (link)I think she didn’t know until yesterday or perhaps the day before. Her speech today was fabulous and straight from the heart. McCain’s advice to her was ‘keep it simple.’ And she did. And we loved it. She’s a natural.
You keep saying this
Raven (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 3:57PM EST (link)But It seems apparent that you’re unhappy with the fact that she’s a woman.
There’s nothing wrong with her qualifications. She is plenty qualified for VP. VP, remember.
She also happens to be appropriate. More appropriate than Pawlenty and Cantor? Maybe. McCain seems to think so. And it’s His opinion that matters.

I am beyond psyched right now. Mind Status: Blown.
jarrod21 Friday, August 29th at 4:19PM EST (link)I supported McCain in 2000, and even voted for him in the primary over my own governor here in Texas, even though it was pretty much done by that point. Even though I was a Fredhead this time around, McCain was my 2nd choice. (although I voted and caucused for Hillary…shhh) Today I remembered exactly why I was a supporter of the man 8 years ago.
I had to hop in the car right as the shindig was starting, but I was listening to the McCain’s introduction and Palin’s speech and I couldn’t fight down the huge smile.
In what I’ve known about Palin over the past few months, with her record on fighting corruption and controlling spending I’ve figured she was awesome, but was it too soon for her? Is Alaska too far away from the rest of the country? Of course, our naif of a VP candidate has still accomplished far more than their guy at the top of the ticket and Alaska, despite their tiny population, is one of the most important states in the entire union.
I saw that the democrats and their allies were attacking her over her experience. I mean, really? Is that the route they want to go on this one?
Honestly, I would have preferred Lieberman over Pawlenty just because he struck me as Mr. Generic Republican guy who did absolutely nothing for me. In my head I wanted the Grumpy Old Men ticket with Fred but it just wouldn’t be the right time for it and I hope that Thompson has a place in the McCain administration, as I hope for the same with Romney and Guiliani (and Lieberman).
I had no clue that this was going to happen. Palin and Jindal are two of the rising stars in the Republican party. I would have loved for either of them to be on the ticket, but I just knew that they weren’t going to be picked. I’m glad I was wrong.
This is the kind of excitement...
Mark Kilmer (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 4:50PM EST (link)I’m sure McCain knew he’d get with this pick. If this sort of thing is enough to bring a long time lurker such as yourself to post for the first time, there is excitement afoot.
I hope we hear more from you as the campaign progresses.
Wrong.

I think her degree is in journalism and
Achance (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 5:28PM EST (link)she worked as a broadcaster in ANC some years ago.
She’s comfortable in front of a camera or a mike, sometimes too much so, and can get a little chatty and colloquial. It goes over OK here with everyone but the Lefty snobs, yes, we have them too, but she does and says things sometimes that are absolutely GUARANTEED to make NY, DC, and LA “sophistocates” just cringe.
She came accross as a little thin on specific knowledge in the gubernatorial debates here, but the RNC and McCain Campaign will have much better briefing books, scripts, and coaches than anything you could get here without spending megabucks and putting up with bringing Beltway Bandits here.

Instead of neutralizing the 'experience' issue
Jeff Weimer (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 6:05PM EST (link)She highlights it. The ‘inexperience’ is on the VP rather than on the Presidential nominee. It’s not a negative for McCain, it keeps an issue alive the Democrats would rather disappear. BTW, she’s the ONLY governor who has to deal regularly with TWO foreign countries. She managed to push forward a natural gas pipeline that has to go through Canada, so don’t tell me she can’t make a deal. the other country (Russia) wants to

Don't worry about Mitt
paint_it_red (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 8:08PM EST (link)His stock has gone up within the party by the way he has handled himself this primary season. He’ll be around for awhile, I’m sure.
And, I’m sure he will be a key player in some fashion for McCain, (or perhaps a future chair of the RNC??) Picking a great American like Palin is no disrespect to Romney.

Palin should help downticket too
paint_it_red (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 8:11PM EST (link)Palin’s selection is a game changer in this race for the oval office, and will help downticket too.
Look for our base to be energized now, some of those who left the party to return, new GOP voters registering, and a permanent positive change in the level of support for the GOP brand. Embattled Congressional Republicans should be thanking their lucky stars for Palin.

conservative feminist perspective
VA_mom (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 9:06PM EST (link)As a mother of two with one on the way and as a woman who has worked while my husband stayed home with the kids, I am absolutely disgusted by the liberal feminists of today. Once again they prove that they DO NOT represent women, nor do they represent feminist ideals. All day long I have been reading comments like “it is poor judgement to drag a child with Downs’ Syndrome around the country to campaign,” “who is going to look after all those kiddies in the middle of the night when a national disaster hits,” and “don’t forget to put your shoes on when you go vote.” Then there are the sexist comments about the fact that she dares to be a powerful woman who is also attractive. Well guess what, it is the Palin family’s decision how to raise their children, and I am sure the children’s FATHER is more than up to the job of taking care of the kids while his wife works. No one questions whether or not Obama is fit to be president even though he has two very young children!!! Why shouldn’t a woman be capable of doing great things for the country even though she has children?
I think Palin is a brilliant choice for McCain and the world will learn that we “hockey moms” didn’t give up our brains when we had kids. I am 100% in McCain’s camp now, and I feel certain that other conservative women will be excited about politics in a way we never have been because his VP selection is one of us. While many of Hilary’s supporters will not be swayed, conservative feminists may well become a force to be reckoned with as more and more insults are sent our way.

“What is she has PMS and starts world war 3??”
“How could she abandon her children just to get some affirmative action position like VP??”
This isn’t the 1950′s people. I am sure that McCain just clinched every single female military vote. Those women know what it takes to “abandon” their kids in pursuit of a cause that is more important than themselves.
