Much has been made about John McCain telling Katie Couric that the Surge “began the Anbar awakening.”
Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening.
McCain answered this by explaining that the Surge was more than just the addition of more troops. This would mean that the surge would have its effects long before it was fully implemented, when all the troops were in place and doing their thing.
How would Barry explain own his mistaken timeline?
Last January, in an ABC News debate in New Hamphire [transcript], Obama uttered the following to Charlie Gibson. He is answering Gibson’s question regarding the reduced violence in Iraq vs. his opposition to the surge:
I would point out that much of that violence has been reduced because there was an agreement with tribes in Anbar province — Sunni tribes — who started to see, after the Democrats were elected in 2006, you know what, the Americans may be leaving soon, and we are going to be left very vulnerable to the Shi’as.
He is asserting that it was the 2006 elections which sparked the [Spring '06] Anbar Awakening. There is a big problem with this claim, besides its prima facie absurdity. RedState.com’s Streiff caught Obama’s gaffe:
Whoa. Whoa. Whoa.
Conveniently for us, inconveniently for Obama, we’ve looked at this timeline before for a different reason.
As early as March 2006, the inestimable Bill Roggio was reporting on the Anbar Awakening from open sources. Probably the earliest mentions of this was blogged by Bill Roggio in June 2005. Success in Anbar Province was evident and substantial before the 2006 elections were even held.
We can discuss John McCain’s timeline, but Obama’s is just plain, inexplicably wrong. The assertion that elements of the surge helped with the Anbar Awakening is one thing, to claim that the elevation of Nancy Pelosi to the Speakership frightened Iraqis into taking on al Qaeda is another.
Am I missing his speech?

"Pulling a McCain"
Jeff Emanuel (Diary) Thursday, July 24th at 12:47PM EST (link)Obama-ites(?) love to point at McCain and accuse him of being too old or too ignorant to tell the difference between Sunni and Shi’a, between Afghanistan and Iraq, etc.
Barack Obama, though, is too ignorant (or too careless, or too convinced of your ignorance) to know (a) the Anbar Awakening started long before the 2006 elections, and — a point not mentioned yet here — (b) the Anbar Awakening was an initiative by Sunni tribes to kill or drive out from their land also Sunni al Qaeda.
In other words, every single thing Barack Obama said in the above statement was wrong.
Every one.
But who needs facts when you have a deep voice and read the TelePrompTer relatively well, right?

I'm so confused
mikeyc Thursday, July 24th at 2:13PM EST (link)I continue to scratch my head when I read this quote.
“I did not anticipate, and I think that this is a fair characterization, the convergence of not only the surge but the Sunni awakening in which a whole host of Sunni tribal leaders decided that they had had enough with Al Qaeda, in the Shii’a community the militias standing down to some degrees. So what you had is a combination of political factors inside of Iraq that then came right at the same time as terrific work by our troops. Had those political factors not occurred, I think that my assessment would have been correct.”
How could he not anticipate the Sunni awakening if it had already begun when he opposed the surge? He basically said if the awakening had not occurred, he would have been correct in his opposition. But he said in the debate that the awakening had already occurred before he even opposed the surge. I’m so confused.
We need Joe Klein to tell us...

tempest Thursday, July 24th at 4:21PM EST (link)and their accomplishments regarding the success of the Surge. Accordingly, I am sure military absentee ballots will go for McCain 3:1 over Obama.
How do we make sure all millitary votes are processed and counted? We need one of our fine Conservative groups to send people over to each of our military bases overseas to process absentee ballots. If possible, the ballots should hand delivered to make sure they are properly processed and counted.
These people risk their lives every day…the least we can do is make sure their votes are counted!
Was it the 2006 elections or Ethnic Cleansing?
thegentlecricket Thursday, July 24th at 6:12PM EST (link)Well, a few nights ago he told Terry Moran of ABC news that ethnic cleansing had something to do with it:
“That is a hard thing to speculate,” Obama said, “The Sunnis might have made the same decisions at that time. The Shii’as might have made some similar decisions based on political calculation. There was ethnic cleansing in Baghdad that actually took the violence level down. And so, as I said before. Nobody has a crystal ball. If we did you just hire the guy with the crystal ball.”(see it at Jake Tapper)
maybe
Pentagon16 (Diary) Thursday, July 24th at 6:23PM EST (link)he should actually ask someone at the Pentagon what happened. There WERE two Marine Battalions which were added to Anbar.
And the “Surge” was more than just sending in troops to sit on a FOB. It was a CHANGE IN STRATEGY where we moved into Joint Security Stations. There were Anbaris who had stepped up against AQI before the surge, and oh yeah- they had their heads chopped off and their cars blown up.
Obama conveniently ignores the fact that the Surge worked in BAGHDAD which is the most populous province and the city has 7 million people- the Anbar Awakening had nothing to do with that. The situation in Basra, Maysan, Baqubah, Mosul and Mahmudiyah had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SAHWA OR THE AWAKENING as there were no Sunni Anbar tribes involved in those areas.
But why let facts stand in the way of taking credit away from our brave and heroic military?!!

The Obamasiah is the master of time and space
Next93 (Diary) Thursday, July 24th at 8:00PM EST (link)You people just don’t get it. Time and space have no meaning to he who is the true Obamasia. Just as economics, energy technology, or military startegy have no meaning to the bretheren (and sisteren)of the Hopey Change.
By the way, I’m predicting that he will pick Brittany Spears as his running mate. She has almost as much government experience as he does, and her rock star status will only enhance his own. And if there’s anyone who has experience managing a crazy she-dog, it’s him.
Oh, and there’s absolutely NO TRUTH to the rumor that “Obama” is Swahili for “Empty Suit”.
Really.
Obama was The One in 2008.
He’ll be a BIGGER one in 2012.
